Boys and Girls summer league basketball

Wednesday was the final day for both the boys and girls JV squads for the summer league in Mt. Vernon.

The boys JV squad faced off against Burlington and Stanwood HS at Mt. Vernon HS. I only watched part of the first game, but one thing that stuck out with me was a lack of depth on the bench. There were a LOT of players missing that I would have expected to see there. Coach Ronning and the players that were there did their best, but a lack of experience showed on the court and our guys gave away a 7 point lead at half and wound up losing to the B-E team. I don't have a result of the second game.

Photos are posted at http://www.shutterfly.com/pro/OakHarborSports/highschool/BBBJVSummerleague

The Girls JV gold also played two games at Mt. Vernon, the first also against Burlington and the second against Lakewood. Again, I only watched half of the first game, and I see these girls improving with each game. Although they lost, they are getting shots off and their defense is still solid. Again, the more time they spend on the court the better they'll get. Team camp should add a lot of confidence to team, which will be the Freshman team next school year.

JV Gold photos are here: http://www.shutterfly.com/pro/OakHarborSports/highschool/GBBJVgold625

Finally, the JV Purple, which for the most part is made up of next year's JV squad, and a few floaters. Both games were at Sedro-Woolley HS, and both were against La Conner teams (white and blue). The LaConner blue looked like a varsity squad from what I saw.

I didn't see the first game as I was in Mt. Vernon, but the 'Cats won that one, and after an hour break played the second game. It was close for the first half and most of the second, but Tiffany Earnhart went down with a twisted ankle (nothing serious, but it kept her out of the rest of the game), and her physical play was missed. LaConner took advantage of it and wound up pulling ahead in the end.

There was some great plays on the court, including a textbook-perfect block by Ariel Brothers and a long-bomb 3-pointer late in the game by Sheena Corey.

BBB summer camp - day 3

First off, again thanks to the Paul twins for their support of the youth summer camp. Having had a daughter that has been to many of these camp, having high school players there to help out and give some personal attention means a lot. It also tends to get those youth to want to attend high school games as they want to see their 'heroes' in action!

I was there for the 2nd hour of the final day of camp taking some photos. Instead of ball handling drills, these photos are mostly of shooting and passing drills.

Enjoy

Even more girls basketball - summer league

The varsity white team finished out their summer league schedule with a pair of games at Sedro-Woolley HS Monday evening.

The first game was against Lakewood, a AA school from the Arlington/Marsyville area, and they didn't have a chance against our girls. The girls ran out to an early lead, and kept a 2-1 margin for most of the game, ending with a final of 57-24. Denmon scored 20 to lead the Wildcats, with Kathryn Fisken hitting 4 free throws to end with 11 and Nicki Mowbray dropping 5 field goals for 10 points. Others getting through the rim were Cheyenne Tubo 2, Clarissa Abadesco 4, Mariah Ferguson 6, and Becca Moeai 4.

The second game, which started 5 minutes after the first game ended was against league opponent Stanwood. For most of the game the score was very close, with neither team more than 2-3 points in front of the other.

Until late in the game.

With only about 3 or 4 minutes left, Stanwood went on a tear, opening up a 10-point lead. The Wildcat women were able to whittle it down to just 3 points, but couldn't get the last shot off in time and lost 43-40. Individual scoring was as follows: Denmon 15, Cori Henricksen 7, Tubo 6, Mowbray and Moeai 4 each, Ferguson and Abadesco 2 each.

Next up are the final summer league games for JV purple and gold on Wednesday. Following that is the week-long team camp at Eastern Oregon University for all players.

Boys varsity basketball camp in Oregon

This past weekend the varsity squad spent a long weekend at the University of Portland for team camp. In addition to individual skills, the team also played 5 games together as a team, going 4-1 for the weekend. Attending camp were incoming seniors Josh Fikse, Brooks Waller, Phil Nadeau and Jimmy Edens, sophomores Jay Stout, Aaron Boesch, Denzel Massey and the twins, Trace and Connor Paul. Freshman Mike Washington Jr. also attended.

During camp, Edens emerged as a team leader, and has his work cut out for him. The team is made up of some good players, but with little varsity experience which was displayed as some very spotty and streaky play at times.

Coach Washington was impressed by the play of Jay Stout, Denzel Massey and Mike Washington Jr. in the guard postion while Josh Fikse and Aaron Boesch continue to improve at the post position.

The JV team will play a final summer league game at Mt. Vernon HS on Wednesday, then the team will be at a tournament in Gig Harbor on July 6th, followed by another team camp at St. Martin's University from July 11-13. The final contest for the summer will be July 19th with a tournament at the Evergreen State College in Olympia.

Sorry, no photos from camp.

Boys basketball youth camp at OHHS

I went up to the high school today for the first day of a 3-day youth summer basketball camp run by Coach Washington. Assisting him was Freshman coach Justin Ronning and two players, Trace and Connor Paul.

The camp started with the Paul twins leading the group of 12 or so 4th-6th graders on a short run around the gym for a couple of laps, then Coach Ronning put the group through a number of ball handling drills, including dribbling while sitting down, dribbling with only the fingertips, and some between-the-legs drills.

The camp continues from noon-2pm on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Some photos have been posted at http://www.shutterfly.com/pro/OakHarborSports/YouthSports

GBB Mt. Vernon tournament 6-21 & 22

There was a lot of basketball played this weekend at various Mt. Vernon sites. JV Gold and Purple, along with varsity, played in a large tournament. Varsity and JV Purple both came away with 3rd place finishes.

First, the JV Gold -

I have to be frank here - the JV Gold is made up of all incoming freshmen while most other teams in the JV division had incoming sophomores and juniors. I don't think Coach Showalter was looking for a lot of wins, but wanted to see improvement as the tournament progressed. He did. The first game, against Ferndale had a final of 33-9 for Ferndale. They also lost to teams from Lake Stevens and Archbishop Murphy on Saturday. They had one game early on Sunday at Skagit Valley college which I don't have a result for, and a final 5th game, for 7th place, in the MV field house. This game was against an experienced and fast Mt. Baker HS team. Our girls didn't do well on offense, but listening in on Coach Showalter's postgame talk with the players, he was very pleased with their defensive performance. As he said "the points will come". With more experience playing at the high school level in the remaining summer league games and during camp next week, these girls should perform well come winter.

JV Purple

Lost their first game by just a single point to Ferndale. I don't know if we missed a last second shot or Ferndale made one. If someone will let me know, I'll post how it ended.

The next game was against Burlington-Edison Gold, and this was also a close game, but this time our girls prevailed, coming away with a 35-31 win.

The 3rd game on Saturday was all Oak Harbor. Our obviously superior team pounded the Arlington JV 44-19.

Sunday there was just one game, against a team called the "Sparks", sponsored by some jewelry company. This was just one of those game that doesn't go your way. Your carefully planned shots bounce in and out of the hoop while the opponents wild shot always seem to go in. It was just one of those days. As a result of the loss, the JV Purple came away from the tournament tied for 3rd with Lake Stevens. There was no final playoff for 3rd in the JV brackets.

Varsity

The first game, a seeding game, was against Lynden. Oak Harbor scored 54 points, but Lynden scored 61. Lead scorer was Jessica Denmon with 28, then Cheyenne Tubo with 10, 4 of which were free throws. Lynden did a good job keeping Jen Jansen away from the hoop, allowing her only a single free throw for scoring. Other players that got on the scoreboard were Nicki Mowbray 6, Kathryn Fisken 2 (both free throws), Becca Moeai 4, Clarissa Abadesco 1, and Cory Henricksen 2.

Next up was Arlington. 3 Oak Harbor players scored in double digits on the way to a 53-29 win. Denmon was again lead scorer with 21. Nicki Mowbray came alive in this game to score 15, and Jansen was a force in the paint with 11. Others scoring were Tubo 2, Fisken 2, and Abadesco 2.

Game three on Saturday was a closely fought battle against Archbishop Murphy. Although the 'Cats won 51-47, it was close, and it was a good thing Denmon was dialed in, as she scored over half the team points by herself with 28. The only other scoring of note was Clarissa Abadesco with 10 and Becca Moeai with 7. Tubo, Jansen and Mariah Ferguson scored 2 each.

There were two games on Sunday, the first against Ferndale with the winner moving on to the championship game. From the opening tip, Ferndale had complete control of the game. Again, this was one of those games where nothing you do seems to work and anything the other team does works perfectly. Ferndale kept Denmon scoreless, and nobody else stepped up to fill the void. No Wildcat players were in double digits - the high scorer being Cheyenne Tubo with 6. Others on the board were Mowbary 5, Jansen 2, Fisken 4, Moeai 2, Abadesco 4.

Finally, for third place in the tournment and a neat trophy, the OH Wildcats beat Burlington-Edison. The 'Cats jumped out to an early lead with their patented "Spread 2" opening play. Jansen tips the ball right down to Mowbray who passes sideways to Denmon for an easy layup. This was a play that work at least four times during the regular season and worked again Sunday. The Wildcat had a lead built as high as 9-10 at times, but let the Tigers back in late in the game. The game went all the way to the wire. OH scored with 10 seconds left to take a 58-57 lead. As B-E inbounded the ball, they called a timeout with only 7 seconds left. The were able to get the ball in and down court, but although the last shot went in the basket, the refs ruled that the shot was after the horn, so OH came away with the 58-57 win.

The varsity team finishes up the summer league tonight, Monday, with two games at Sedro-Woolley HS.

Volleyball tournament at Coupeville 21 Jun

The varsity and JV volleyball teams (known in this tournament at OH1 and OH2) traveled all the way to Coupeville for a 1-day round-robin tournament against teams from Coupeville, South Whidbey and Sultan. OH and Coupeville both had 2 teams, while S. Whidbey and Sultan had only their varsity squads.

The first match was OH1 vs Coupeville 1, and this one was all OH from the opening serve. Our girls were in a groove and with some great setting by Melany Cone, cruised to a 25-4, 25-9 win.

Next up was OH2 against Sultan. This match was close, and the girls showed a lot of grit by staying with Sultan, but they wound up falling 22-25 adn 21-25. In either the first or second game (I don't recall which), Sydney Carlson almost single-handedly caught up with 5 aces in a row (it seemed like). I wasn't taking detailed notes as I was also taking photos.

The third and fourth games were played at the same time. OH1 was in one gym against Sultan while OH2 was in another vs South Whidbey. OH1 again put on a clinic on how to play volleyball winning the first game 25-5. Sultan regrouped and mounted a challenge in the 2nd game, scoring 17 against the Wildcats, but it wasn't enough, as our girls got to 25 first.

On the OH2 side, during the first game they were coached by Coupeville's Rick Swankie, former OH JV coach, as Coach Molitor was with OH1. The girls game out flat and just couldn't seem to put anything remotely resembling a rally in the first game, falling 4-25. They showed a lot more hustle in the 2nd, and again Carlson was great from the service line, but finished on the short end of a 25-17 score.

At noon OH1 played South Whidbey, which game our girls their biggest challenge of the day, and actually took a game from us. SW came out to play in the first game, holding on to win 25-20. OH1 came back in the second behind some great hits by Jessica Muzzall and Marisa Sutherland to win 25-17. Game 3 was exciting, with one long rally that was finally ended by an absolutely textbook solo block by Kim Mowbray. The 'Cats won that one 15-8 to win the match 2-1.

OH2 was in action next against Coupeville 2, and they picked up their first match win of the day, in 3 game, 25-20, 19-24 adn 15-8. OH2 was clearly the superior team and should have won in just two games, but two things were working against them in this match: serving and serve returns. I don't thing a and server got more than a single serve per service rotation, which Coupeville often had multiple aces from many of their serves. They were able to correct this and take game 3, but it was pretty close.

In the next round, both teams again were in action. OH1 vs Coupeville 2 and OH2 vs Coupeville 1. The OH1 game wasn't even a contest, and the girls played without a coach. Even without playing their best (no hard hits - concentrate on placing the ball in a specific spot on the floor) they still won the first game 25-5. All 5 Coupeville points came from service errors on our part. Coupeville loosened up a bit in the 2nd and played some decent volleyball, scoring 14 points to the Wildcats' 25.

In the other gym, OH2 just couldn't get things going, losing both to Coupeville 17-25 and 13-25.

The final match of the day was OH1 vs OH2. Coach Molitor had thought about mixing up the teams a bit to even them out, or having OH1 ease up a bit, but in the end told each team to play their best. In the end, OH1 won both games by identical scores - 25-14.

It was long day of volleyball, and Coach Molitor got to see a lot of the players, both JV and varsity.

Photos have been posted to 2 separate albums, one for each team. While I'm pretty sure I got all the right people with the right teams, there may be one or two that are not in the right place, especially if they switched teams during the day, or if I took a photo of them with player from the other team. One set of photos from the OH2 team is not labeled with the player's name, as I don't know her last name. If someone can help me out, I can label the photos correctly.

Finally, if I got any of the scores wrong, let me know so I can correct it.

Girls Summer League from June 18th

Both varsity teams were in action on Wednesday, June 18th. I don't have any results from Monday as nobody sent an email with any information.

The first game of the night was the Varsity Purple against Meridian HS, and it was not pretty. Meridian jumped to a 21-9 first half lead, then cruised on to beat our girls.

The second game was the Varsity White against the Burlington-Edison Rejects. This is a self-formed team from BEHS, and includes former North Whidbey MS and OH Cat player Lauren Watts. This game was all OH from the start and the girls smoked their way to a 45-15 win, and it wasn't really that close. Jennifer Jansen made her first appearance at a summer league game (she also does volleyball), and along with Nicki Mowbray scored 8 points. Jessica Denmon led all scoring with 11. Others getting on the board were Cheyenne Tubo 2, Mariah Ferguson 4, Kathryn Fisken 5, and Clarissa Abadesco 6.

Varsity purple was up again, against the same BE Reject team, but this game was much closer. It was close throughout, and the Rejects even had a lead late in the game, but the Wildcats held them off and finished on top.

At the same time, the Varsity White was playing against Meridian HS in the MV field house, and that score was even more lopsided than the BE score, with a final of 66-18. The halftime score was 41-9! I missed a few individual scores, but this is what I came up with: Denmon 24, Jansen 2, Mowbray 8, Tubo 7, Fisken 7, Ferguson 6, Abadesco 8 and Hendricksen 2.

Next up for Varsity white and both JV Purple and Gold is a tournament in Mt. Vernon this weekend.

GBB Wenatchee Tournament

What a weekend!

The girls varsity team traveled to Wenatchee for a 2-day, 5-game tournament hosted by Wenatchee High School the weekend of June 14-15.

The first game was noon Saturday against 3A Eastmont, which is just across the river from Wenatchee. This game was a blowout from the opening minute. At halftime the Wildcat women ran the score to 31-9, with a final score of 58-24. Jessica Denmon lead the scoring with 19, while Nicki Mowbray was also in double digits with 13. Becca Moeai was a force in the rebounding column, and scored 6 of her 8 in the 2nd half. Everyone else got on the board as well: Cheyenne Tubo 7, Cori Hendricksen 7, Kathryn Fisken 5, and Tiffany Earnhart 1.

Game 2 on Saturday was at Wenatchee Valley College against the select team "Way to Win". This game saw the Cats on the short end of a rough, physical 60-29 score, but our girls never gave up, and closed some of the gap in the 2nd half. Denmon again was high scorer with 14, with 12 coming in the 2nd half. Coach McLeod said he was pleased with the way the girls played against that team.

Game 3 on Saturday was back at the high school against host Wenatchee. Jessica Denmon scored 20 of the team's 39 points to win the game. It was fairly close throughout, but 2nd half scoring won it for the girls.

After the games, most of the team retired to Casa Mowbray (aka Travelodge) for a little pool action. After most of an hour and a half playing and splashing around, they called it a night.

Sunday morning saw two more games. The first was against new WESCO South team Glacier Peak of Snohomish, and this was a very low-scoring game which Oak Harbor won 25-20. Denmon scored 9, Earnhart 4, and Clarissa Abadesco, who only played on Sunday, scored 3.

The second (and last) game was after only a 10-minute break, and was against Central Valley HS. This game was really close, but in the end our 37 points wasn't quite enough. 15 came from Denmon, while Abadesco added 9.

Although the girls didn't win as many games as they wanted, everyone got a lot of playing time, and gained a lot of experience playing against quality opponents.

I took a lot of photos, including some from the pool, and have them posted at http://www.shutterfly.com/pro/OakHarborSports/highschool

Enjoy!

Girls Summer basketball

The girls were at a big tournament in Vancouver, at Prairie HS this past weekend. I wasn't there as our family was participating in the Relay for Life in Oak Harbor. I don't have many details, but Coach McLeod shared on highlight - and that was a 6-overtime win against Greater St. Helens League powerhouse Prairie, then again winning against Oregon City, a high-quality Oregon girls basketball program.

Monday saw all the girls in action, with both varsity teams and the JV Gold & Black playing two games each. I don't have any results or details from Varsity Purple, JV Gold or JV Black, so if someone would shoot me an email, I'll get something posted.

Varsity white played two games in the MVHS field house against Anacortes. The most remarkable highlight in this game was a rain delay.

Yep, you read that right - a rain delay. It started raining hard outside, and a gutter or something must have been blocked, as there was a lot of water running down the inside wall and onto the court. It took almost 10 minutes before it finally stopped. OH won the first game 51-35 after building to a 20-10 halftime lead. The high scorer was Jessica Denmon with 13 - 8 in the first and 5 in the second. Kathryn Fisken, off the bench, was 2nd with 10. Other scorers were Ro Smith 7, Nicki Mowbray 7, Cori Hendricksen 2, Mariah Ferguson 8, and Becca Moeai with 4. Although Clarissa Abadesco didn't score in the first game, she had an awful lot of assists.

The second game, against Shoreline Christian, was closely fought all the way. Shorline came out with a full-court press, and it took us a while to adjust and get the ball downcourt. After starting down 7-0, our girls came back to hold a 1-point 26-25 halftime lead. It was back and forth again in the second. Kathryn Fisken had a nice steal of a pass and took it to the hoop on the other end to tie the game at 33 with just over 7 minutes left, and Clarissa Abadesco hit her only bucket of the night to give the 'Cats a 1 point lead, 42-41 with 1:40 remaining. Unfortunately, that was our only scoring, and Shoreline was able to get 5 more for a 46-42 win. Denmon again led OH scoring with 16, and Fisken again 2nd with 5. Mowbray and Hendricksen both got 4 and Abadesco 2.

Shoreline had an athletic, well-coached team, including one girl that seemed to be everywhere on the court - steals, assists, 3-pointers - you name it, she was there. I spoke with #2 after the game and asked her if she was an incoming Senior, and she said she was only a Freshman!

Right after the OH-Shoreline game, Shoreline played against the Burlington-Edison Rejects - a team from B-E High School with former Oak Harbor resident Lauren Watts on the team, so some of the girls stayed to watch their former teammate play for a while.

Wednesday the JV purple plays two games at LaVenture Middle School, at 7:05 and 8:05, and the boys JV is in action in the Mt. Vernon HS field house also at 7:05 and 8:05.

More summer league basketball

I spent most of the evening in Mt. Vernon Wednesday, taking some photos of both the boys and girls summer league games.

In the field house at Mt. Vernon high school, an exceptionally dark and poorly lit gym, both the girls varsity white and purple played two games.

Varsity white played both games against Burlington-Edison teams - their Blue and Gold teams. The first was against the Blue, and it was a close game throughout - neither team building more than a 2-3 point lead. However, in the end, the 'Cats were able to pull it out and win. Freshman Mariah Ferguson got the start in that game, and another freshman, Abby Leete, saw considerable playing time.

The second game, against B-E blue, was Oak Harbor all the way. I can't recall the exact final score, but OH won by double digits, and was close to doubling up on BE.

The varsity purple's first game was against Lakewood, and although our girls played tough, they just couldn't get in a groove. The second game was against the Mt. Vernon team, and I don't have a final score on that one.

Turning to the boys, OH has one team entered in a JV league, and they played two games at Skagit Valley College. The first was against TCBA Elite, an AAU travel squad that looked to me like it was mostly incoming seniors. I didn't was their game against us, but did watch another game TCBA was in, and they looked fairly good. Our JV team, which is mostly this year's freshman team, played right with then and only lost by two.

The second game was against Sedro Woolley, a much better match. The Sedro team was small but very quick, while we had the height. In this game, the height won out and the team won by a 20-16 score.

JV girls basketball

I went to Skagit Valley College Monday evening to watch all three of our girls JV teams in action. The JV Black, which is made up of incoming 8th grade players was smoking a team from, I belive, Mount Vernon Christian. When I left shortly before halftime, I think that MVC had only scored once - the score was 14-2 or something similar. The Black played a second game, but I don't know the score.

The same happened to the JV Gold team, which is mostly incoming freshmen. Their first game didn't go so well, but the second game, against Sedro-Woolley was a blowout. The final there was either 18-2 or 20-2 (I didn't write it down).

The JV Purple went up against Coupeville, and it was a close game all the way to the end. Coming into the final stretch, OH was leading 20-16, but Coupeville went on a tear and wound up winning by 5. Watching the game, it seemed like we just forgot how to play for a bit, with players stepping on sidelines, passing directly to the opposing team, and just fumbling the ball away. I'm sure that will be corrected before the next games on Monday, June 9th. All the OH teams except JV Black will be in action - two varsity and two JV. Schedules can be found online at http://www.skagitcounty.net/Common/asp/default.asp?d=ParksAndRecreation&c=General&p=youthbasketball/main.htm

Boys basketball tournament

In addition to the girls tournament, the boys were also in action this weekend. I was at the girls tournament and was not at the boys games, but Coach Washington sent me the following about the weekend's varsity games in Mt. Vernon:

We went 1 and 3 this weekend. In the first game we lost to WESCO South Jackson HS. The Jackson was led by Brett Kingma, and our defense held him to about 10 points. Jackson is a district playoff team but we started out strong and had them 12 to 0 to start off with. Our youth showed in the second as we committed several turnovers that Jackson capitalized on. Mike Washington Jr. and Jay Stout led the scoring, while Josh Fikse, Rashaad Smith and Aaron Boesh led the defensive end with rebounding and solid defensive play. Next we played Union, a strong team from Vancouver, Washington. Again we started out strong and held a 6 point advantage late in the first half and trailed by 6 with 6 minutes left but again we revealed our our youth late in the game with more costly turnovers. Again, Washington, and Stout led the scoring with Boesch and Fiske showing strong defensive skills.

Sunday matched us up with South Whidbey and Everett but without Rashaad Smith. The first game, against OH teacher Scott Collins' South Whidbey team, went back and forth throughout. With 2 seconds left, South Whidbey hit a 3 point basket to win it. Washington and Stout again led Wildcat scorers, while Denzel Massey did a nice job running the point. Fikse and Boesh did another good job on the defensive end with rebounds.

Our last game of the day saw us being matched up with WESCO member Everett. The game was played up and down but the Wildcats ended up victorious. This game saw Washington, Stout and Massey leading the way in scoring, with Stout scoring 12 of his points on four 3 point baskets. Fikse again was the Wildcat power on the defensive end with some great rebounding.

The Varsity wildcats will not play again until they travel to the University of Portland the weekend of June 20th-23rd. However, the JV wildcats will play Wednesday June 4th at 6:30 at Skagit Valley College in Mount Vernon. They will also play in a JV Tourney June 7th and 8th at Whatcom Community College in Bellingham. Many of the previously mentioned Wildcats will also participate in the JV league. Said Coach Washington: "I feel the younger players need to play as much as they can, no matter if it is at the Varsity or JV Level".

Sorry, no photos to share from this tournament.

Girls summer league basketball

The Oak Harbor girls basketball team went to their first weekend tournament of the summer - at Snohomish High School. There were many great teams there, including defending 4A state champ Lewis & Clark.

OH took three teams to this tournament - JV Gold, made up of incoming freshmen coached by Todd Showalter, JV Purple coached by Bob Stremel, and the Varsity coached by Brett McLeod.

JV Gold improved over the two day tournament, and several girls showed a lot of grit and determination - they were showing that they wanted to be a part of Wildcat basketball.

JV Purple won their first game on Sunday, and were playing a very aggressive Jackson team in their second game of the day.

Varsity had a big loss in the first game. Not on the scoreboard, but on the floor, only about 5 minutes into the game Jasmine Chong went down with a knee injury and was out for the rest of the weekend. We'll have to see what her doctor says about when she can return. Since Ro Smith couldn't make the tournament, Ariel Brothers was brought up from JV and saw significant playing time at post on the varsity team.

Summer league play in Mt. Vernon starts with JV action this Monday, and the next tournament is at Prairie HS just outside Vancouver, WA
