Baseball 4-29 vs Arlington

After being down 4-0 halfway through the game, the varsity baseball team dug in to win on a 1-out walk-off sacrifice fly by sophomore Jay Stout that drove Nate Young in to score the team's 5th run of the game.

A photo of the winning slide into home plate and 34 others are posted HERE.

Softball girls win!!!

No stats are available yet, but Oak Harbor defeated Monroe 7-5 at Monroe Wednesday afternoon. It's the Wildcat's first league win and 4th win overall for the season.

Softball 4-28 at Snohomish

The JV softball girls played a tight game at Snohomish, but in the end could not pull it off, losing 6-5

The varsity team knocked out 3 hits but couldn't get anyone across home plate and fell 4-0.

The girls travel to Monroe on Wednesday, and play Lake Stevens at home on Friday.

Boys Soccer 4-28 vs Cascade

Jack O'Neil had several saves during the first half, including a couple of spectacular diving saves as the varsity team ended the 1st half in a 0-0 tie, but two quick goals by Cascade midway through the second half was more than the Wildcats could overcome, falling 2-0.

The JV team played hard, but was overpowered by the Bruins in the end.

Boys Basketball to add shot clock

The WIAA Representative Assembly voted 42-11 last week to pass Amendment 11A and 11B, adding a 35 second shot clock to high school boys basketball in Washington State.

The new 35 second clock matches what is used at the Collegiate level.

In addition, the WIAA also passed a football "mercy rule", in that when one team is ahead by 45 points, the game will go to a running clock format.

The exact text of all the proposed amendments can be found HERE.

Tennis 04-24 vs Stanwood

In yet another close match, the OH varsity tennis team fell by a 4-3 score to the Stanwood Spartans. Jen Jansen won her first set 6-1, then stumbled and lost 1-6, but recovered to win the 3rd 6-3. Cady O'Dell also went 3 sets, winning 3-6, 7-5, 6-3. Erin Neilon was the other singles winner, defeating her opponent 7-5, 6-3. Molly Deleon played hard tennis, but lost two close sets, 6-3 and 7-5.

None of the doubles teams were able to come away with a win, and Stanwood won both the extra matches that were played.

JV results are not available.

Baseball 04-24 vs Cascade

Both the baseball and softball teams both played against aggressive Cascade squads Friday, and both the varsity and JV teams were beaten by the Bruins.

Ryan Byrne hit a double to start the 4th inning, but that was the only hit the Wildcats could muster that afternoon.

Photos from the JV team are posted HERE.

Softball 04-24 vs Cascade

The JV softball team started off with a big bang Friday night against the Cascade Bruins. The Wildcat girls batted around in the 1st inning, building an 8-0 early lead thanks in part to some very aggressive and smart base running. In back-to-back plays, a Wildcat runner on first was able to steal 2nd and then make it all the way home on Cascade throwing errors.

In the first two innings, pitcher Emily Hunt faced 8 batters and struck out 5 of them. The JV team only allowed Cascade to score 1 run and won via the 10-run rule.

Things didn't go as well for the varsity girls. The team allowed 2 runs in the 1st inning, but thing weren't looking too bad until Cascade exploded for 5 runs in the 2nd. OH pitchers Ratliff and Osborn combined for 5 K's, but the Cascade pitcher struck down 10 Wildcat batters.

Kaylee Meders played another good game, going 1-3 at the plate with a stolen base, and she scored the only run for OH with the RBI going to Nikki Mowbray.

Photos of both JV and varsity are posted HERE.

OHHS names new girls soccer coach

From the Everett Herald:

"Jeff Laiblin has been hired to coach the Oak Harbor girls soccer team, according to an e-mail statement from Oak Harbor athletic director Nicki Luper.

Laiblin has 11 years of high school head coaching experience and “a great deal of enthusiasm to work with the players at Oak Harbor High School,” Luper said.

Laiblin takes over a team that this past fall won one game, lost 13 and tied two. The Wildcats finished at the bottom of the nine-team Western Conference North Division."

Coach Laiblin is a teacher at North Whidbey Middle School.

In addition to Reedy and Ford, Matt Fikse shot an 83, Brandon Kenworthy an 85 and Logan White a 98.

Tennis 4-22 vs Arlington

The girls tennis team played almost two full matches Tuesday, having to make up a rained out match from March, then the regularly scheduled match against Arlington.

In the makeup match, the Oak Harbor girls won 3 of 4 singles matches, but lost all 3 doubles matches to go down to the Eagles 4-3. Jen Jansen won 6-0, 6-1, Laurin Rico 6-3, -1 and Erin Neilon 6-1, 6-0.

In the regular match, there were the same results with different players. Jansen won again, but the score was a much closer 7-5, 6-2. Erin Neilon went 3 sets before winning 6-2, 4-6, 6-1, and Cady O'Dell in the #4 spot won 6-4, 6-1.

The #3 doubles team of Abi Cone and Katie Wiggins went 3 sets, winning the 2nd 6-4, and in extra matches, Janelle Green won 8-6 and the team of Bernadette Rietz and Beverly Gianino won 8-6 as well.

Things didn't go well for the JV girls in Arlington. Out of a total of 13 matches, the Wildcats were able to pick up only one win, that by Michelle Maxwell in a 6-0, 6-3 straight-set victory.

The doubles team of Molly Van Dam and Joyce Abides have greatly improved lately, and have been moved into the #3 double spot.

No photos. Sorry.

Baseball 4-22 vs Cascade

The varsity baseball team got thumped on Wednesday by Cascade, who belted out 18 runs against the Wildcats' 7. No other stats were reported, nor was the JV score.

Girls Golf 4-21 @ WGCC

The varsity girls golf team faced off against Stanwood and Arlington on a beautiful Tuesday afternoon and cleaned up! Junior Melany Cone was the medalist with a Stableford scoring point total of 29, followed closely by Simone Hamilton with 28. Ashley Johnson scored 23 points, then we get to the top Arlington player with 19 and the top Stanwood player with 17.

Kara Stratton was next with 15 then Mara Cortez with 12.

86 photos are posted HERE.

Baseball 4-21 vs Monroe

The varsity team traveled to Monroe, and even with a home run by Sam Wolfe, the 'Cats could not get enough runs on the board and fell to the Bearcats 5-3.

The JV team was at the OHHS field and was tied 1-1 at one point, but Monroe went on a tear and scored 5 runs in a single inning.

The final score wasn't available, but some photos from the game are posted HERE.

Boys Soccer 4-21 vs Everett

The varsity soccer squad lost a close 4-3 contest to Everett on Tuesday, when Everett kicked a goal with less than 5 minutes remaining to take the lead.

Justin Van Pelt, Kevin Flavin and Michael Shevchuk each scored a goal for the Wildcats in the loss.

JV results are not available.

Girls Tennis 4-20 vs Lake Stevens

In Monday's varsity tennis match at home against Lake Stevens, the Wildcats could only pull out two victories, both in singles. #2 Erin Neilon won in 3 sets, 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 and #4 Cady O'Dell won 6-2, 6-2. A non-counting OH win was in an extra doubles match, won 6-3, 6-4 by the team of Jordan Faralan and Jessica James.

Down at Lake Stevens, the JV girls were playing what was probably their best match of the season. Although Lake Stevens won 4-3, it wasn't decided until the final point of Michelle Maxwell's #3 match. It was an exceptionally long match, being the last to finish of the day. Michelle won the first set 7-6 after 3 tiebreakers, then lost 5-7 in the 2nd. In the final match, after a lot of back-and-forth scoring, Lake Stevens put the match away with a 10-7 3rd set win.

Coach Brown also noted the hard-fought win by Jenninfer Bowers and Cassie Gianino at the #1 doubles spot. They lost their first 6-7 in 6 tiebreakers, then won the 2nd set 6-3 and the tiebreak set 10-8. Molly Van Dam and Joyce Abides had an impressive 8-6 win in an extra doubles match.

Other winners that day were Russian exchange student Kate Kapitanova (7-6, 7-5), Audrey Andoy (6-2, 6-1), Kim Kerly and Ashley Leslie (8-6), and Mckenzie McCormack and Jordan Trask (8-1).

We were at the JV track meet at Lake Stevens HS, so were able to get a few photos of the JV tennis girls in action. Those photos are posted HERE.

Track 04-20 All-comers at Lake Stevens

Monday's JV/All-Comer's track meet at Lake Stevens HS saw a number of Wildcats perform at a high level.

While not all results are posted, particularly the distance races, those that are can be found, as usual, at athletic.net.

Dejon Pruitt was in 3 events, was the top Wildcat in all 3, and set new PR's in all 3. He ran the 200 in 25.24, the 400 in 59.34 and leaped 17-5 in the Long Jump.

In the distance races, freshman Emily Bain swept the 800 and 1600. She won both races convincingly, holding a 20-30 yard lead over 2nd place Ariel McCarter in the 800, setting new PRs in both races.

A total of 69 images from the day's activities can be found HERE.

Youth Soccer 4-18 @ Ft. Nugent Park

It was another fun-filled morning at Ft. Nugent Park as literally hundreds of children filled the soccer fields from 9am until well after noon.

The Oak Harbor Sports report was able to get photos of 7 different games, mostly U-6 teams.

First up was the U-8/9 Academy team “Spirit” vs the U8 Red Tigers. Spirit was by far the better team, but the Tigers never gave up, and scored several goals of their own. 61 images from this game are posted HERE.

Next was the GU-6 Purple Porcupines vs the Orange Cupcakes. There was a lot of action and a lot of scoring in this game, and it was a pleasure to watch the girls really go after the ball. 76 photos are posted HERE.

Another pair of GU-6 teams, the Red Ladybugs, sponsored by the Doodlebug Academy on NE Harvest St in Oak Harbor faced off against the Light Blue Bluebirds, sponsored by the Posh Salon on Pioneer Way. Again, it’s nice to see kids outside on a nice Saturday morning and not sitting in front of a TV all day! 35 photos from this game are HERE.

The first boys game we took photos of was the BU-6 Purple Raptors and the Red Volcanoes. The boys game is more aggressive than the girls, but there was still a lot of running back and forth chasing after the ball. 50 photos are HERE.

Another boys game was the BU-6 Maroon Sharks vs the Green Leprechauns. Their photos (64 of them) are posted HERE.

Still with the boys, the next games were the BU-12 rec teams Inferno (in red) and Dynamo (in light blue). Inferno is sponsored by the Oak Harbor Elks Club and Dynamo is sponsored by the North Whidbey Soccer Academy. The game was close, but in the end, Dynamo came out on top 5-3. 37 photos are posted HERE.

In the final game covered before the memory card was filled up, the GU-6 Pink Panthers, sponsored by Kathi Phillips of Re/Max Real Estate, and the Yellow Tigers. This was another fun game to watch, and their 76 photos are posted HERE.

Next week we'll work on getting some U-8 and U-10 teams.

Baseball 4-17 Varsity vs Monroe

The varsity baseball team looked out of it late in the game Friday night. The Wildcats were down 4-1 in the 3rd inning but went on a 2-out rally to close the gap to 4-3, but Monroe scored 3 to lead 7-3 starting the bottom of the 7th. Oak Harbor scored one to make it 7-4, then with two outs, OH was able to load the bases, but couldn’t drive in any more runs.

Over 50 images from the game are posted HERE.

Track 4-16 @ Everett Stadium

It was another successful day for both the boys and girls OHHS track teams last Thursday at Everett Stadium against Everett and Cascade.

Female athletes performed admirably, with 19 individuals setting all-time personal bests in 23 different events. Hope Thompson set new records in the 100m dash and triple jump, Katelyn Schneider had new best times in the 200 and 400, and Adrianna Royal in the 800 and 1600. Claire Trepanier set a new PR in the 1600 and a season best in the 800 at 2:34.94, just 2 seconds off her all-time best. Allison Duvenez, in her first race after an early-season injury clocked 11:56.28 in the 2-mile run, chopping over 40 seconds off her best from 2008. Ariel McCarter, Taylor Von Grey and Heather Dale all cut 40 seconds or more off their previous 3200 meter times.

Becky Freeman threw the discus for a season best 79-7, almost 2 feet further than last week’s throw, and she’s been adding distance every week. Jesy Groebli tossed the shot put 22-7, over a foot further than last week’s effort, and KeriAnne Wright threw the discus 52 feet, adding 9 feet to her all-time best throw.

The OH girls won a total of 7 events. Shantae Young won the 100, long jump and triple jump, Abby Leete won the 3200, Allison Duvenez the 300m hurdles, and OH teams won the 4x100 and 4x400 relays. In addition, Maura McKole (400m), Adrianna Royal (800), Janelle Yoshimoto (javelin, long jump), and Hope Thompson (triple jump) all finished in 2nd.

25 boys set new PRs in 27 events. Derrick Clarit and Michael Mack set new season PRs in both the long jump and triple jump, with Mack adding over two feet last week’s triple jump effort.

Senior Cody Church threw the javelin just over 92 feet, adding 11 feet to his previous PR, while Austin Church and Nathen Steele both added over 4 feet to their discus throws.

Josh Duhrkopf ran the 1600 in 4:44.75, cutting 5 seconds off last week’s time, and his is now just .2 seconds from setting a new PR. Cody Klauer cut 6 seconds off his mile time, and all 4 OH runners in the 3200 - Matt Reith, Brandon Vagt, Anthony Yockey and Mitchell Jackson all set new PRs, with Vagt cutting over 30 seconds off last week’s time.

The sprinters also cut time, but in not so dramatic a fashion. Jason Curles cut nearly a half-second off his 200 time, Brooks Waller cut almost 2 ½ seconds off his 300 hurdle time, and four 400m runners – Greg Goebel, Chris Opdyke, Josh Sayre, and Dillon Peterson set new personal best times.

Stephen Lewis finished first in both the 100 and 200, with Donavan Hunt close on his heels in 2nd place in both races. Josh Duhrkopf won the 800, Hunt won the long jump, and the OH team won the 4x400 relay.

There were 8 second place finishes. Hunt in the 100 and 200, Goebel in the 400, Matt Bolte in the 800, Duhrkopf in the 1600, Rashaad Smith in the high jump, Clarit in the long jump and Mack in the triple jump. OH boys finished 1-2 in the 100, 200 and 800, and finished 2-3 in the 400, 1600, high jump and long jump.

140 images, mostly of throwers, are now posted HERE.

Girls Tennis 4-15 vs Snohomish

Oak Harbor JV girls tennis played at home against Snohomish on Wednesday afternoon.
It was a taxing day for the OH team. A powerful Panther team paid a visit and gave OH a lesson in tennis. The overall match score was Snohomish 15, Oak Harbor 0.

This was the final match in the first half of the OH tennis season. The only good thing about the day was the weather – a cool but sunny day.

At one point Snohomish had not lost a single game. It was not clear if they had given up more than a half dozen points. Coach Brown remarked that "their players were very gracious in victory."

Undefeated Snohomish also dominated in the varsity matches, winning regulation 5-2 and overall 7-2 #1 and #2 singles Jen Jansen and Erin Neilon were the only winners.

Photos from the JV matches are posted HERE.

Softball 4-15 at Lake Stevens

At Lake Stevens yesterday, the varsity softball team continued to struggle, getting shut out by the Vikings. OH didn't help their cause by committing 5 errors during the game.

JV results are not available.

Girls Golf 4-14 @ Snohomish

The Varsity girls golf team was in Snohomish on April 14th for a match against the Panthers and Everett Seagulls.

Melany Cone was the top Wildcat with 40 points and tied for 3rd overall. Simone Hamilton was close behind with 35. Ashley Johnson scored 29, Kara Stratton 26 and Mara Cortez 23.

Softball 4-14 vs Everett

The OHHS softball team faced off against Everett, currently ranked 8th in state in 3A softball, and the Seagulls wasted no time jumping to a 6-0 lead early. Oak Harbor continues to struggle with errors, but Coach Weikle said it was nice getting some good hits, somewhat meeting their hitting goal. She was disappointed that when the team got a player on base, a mental error would result in an out, or the runner was left stranded at the end of the inning.

The JV game started out similarly, but a nice rally in the 2nd inning drove several runs across the plate. Everett recovered and was able to win the game.

Both JV and Varsity photos are posted HERE.

Boys Golf 4-15 @ Snohomish

Earlier this week the boys varsity golf team was in Snohomish, playing against the Panthers and Cascade Bruins.

Phil Reedy again was the top OH golfer, carding a 3-over-par 75, tying for 4th place overall. Snohomish dominated, with all 5 scoring golfers shooting 79 or less.

Judd Ford shot a decent 77, Brandon Kenworthy and Matt Fikse 85, and Logan White 95.

Soccer 4-14 vs Monroe

The JV soccer team is still trying to find a rhythm, falling 3-0 to Monroe. The defense is getting better each match, but the boys want to find a way to get the ball into their opponent’s net on a regular basis.

The OH varsity got on the board first on a Keven Flavin goal, but Monroe tied the game just before halftime. In the 2nd half, the teams traded goals making the score 2-2, but with less than 5 minutes left in the game, the Wildcats were called for a penalty inside the goal box. Goalkeeper Jack O’Neil went 1-on-1 against the Monroe player and dove to his left to deflect the initial kick, but he wasn’t able to gather the ball in before another Monroe player kicked it into the net. The team played well and should not hang their heads over the loss.

Photos from both JV and varsity games are posted HERE.

Girls Tennis 4-14 vs Cascade

Coach Brown had the following to say about the JV tennis match last Tuesday.
"This was a good match between two closely matched teams. Cascade ended up taking the victory, but there were some good results from the Oak Harbor players. Of particular note were Alexa Holmly at 3rd singles, and Cassie Gianino and Jennifer Bowers at 1st Doubles.
Alexa had a very good match. She was playing well and setting up well. She won the first set 6-2, and seemed thoroughly in control. She was leading 5-2 in the second when her opponent got it together and came back to win the set 7-5. Alexa toughened up and won in a tie break 12-10.
First doubles was a great mental match. Cascade won the first set 6-4, but Cassie and Jennifer had already come up with some plans to upset that team. They put them into action, and won the second set 6-2.
The tiebreak was tense, but the Wildcats won 11-9. Great Stuff!!
Audrey Andoy also won a long match at #4 singles. We were not able to get a win at either 2nd or 3rd doubles, so the official match was lost 3-4. Kim Kerley / Ashley Leslie, Asia Pruyne / Jacque Villanueva, and Mckenzie McCormack / Ashley Haynes all came away with victories in their matches."

While the JV girls were playing hard against Cascade in Everett, the varsity girls were not doing as well. Jen Jansen beat her opponent 6-1, 6-2, but that was the only OH domination. Erin Neilon lost in 3 sets, 1-6, 6-3, 4-6 as did Molly Deleon 7-6(2), 2-6, 0-6. Sophomore Cady O’Dell won at #4 singles, but took 3 sets to do it, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4. Cascade won all 3 doubles matches, but the #1 team of Lauren Rico and Valerie Loders took them to 3 sets. In extra matches, Jessica James and Jordan Faralan won 10-8 and Beverly Gianino won 8-4.

Photos from the varsity match are posted HERE.

JV Girls Golf on 4-13 and 4-15 @ WGCC

On April 13th, the JV golf team had their first match at the Whidbey Golf & Country Club against Snohomish and Everett. Girls golf uses a point system rather than stroke count, so the higher the score the better.

The top Wildcat golfer on Monday was Sasha Olson who garnered 30 points – enough for a 1st place finish. Mara Cortez scored 23 to earn 3rd place. Jamie Rancourt had 20, Millie Goebel 17 and Shari Paiz 13. As a team, the girls earned 103 points to win the match, 9 points ahead of 2nd place Snohomish.

The girls played again on Wednesday, but results aren't available.

Photos from the matches are posted HERE.

JV/All-comers track 4-13 @ Snohomish

This week’s track all-comer’s meet was held at Snohomish HS, and OHHS was well represented with a mix of runners and throwers. Complete results aren’t available, so only performance marks are listed, not placings. Results for all OH athletes can be found at http://www.athletic.net/TrackAndField/TeamResults.aspx?Cal=149963

Freshman Josiah Miller was the top OH sprinter, setting a new PR in both the 100 and 200 meter dash. He also attempted the high jump for the first time this year, clearing 5-4. Josiah was followed by Jason Curles, just .1 second behind. For the girls, Katelyn Schneider was tops for OH in the 100 and 200 as well, followed closely in the 100 by Jesy Groebli and in the 200 by Bri Peterson. In the 400m dash, Chris Opdyke, Jason Curles and Josh Sayre all finished in under 1 minute for the boys, and Christina Alexander and Carolyn Vasquez ran for the girls.

Ariel McCarter, Taylor VonGrey and Heather Dale all ran in both the 800 and 1600, with Ariel first in the 800 and Heather in the 1600. Lucas Salmons and Adam Goforth were 1-2 in both the 800 and 1600, with Lucas first in the 800 and Adam first in the 1600.

In field events, Robert Beadles and James Lisenby were in the shot put, and Robert set a new PR with his first throw over 30’. James Middleton threw the javelin 87’ – adding 20 feet to his previous best. Tobi Wilhelm was just 3 feet behind, but threw 30 feet further than his previous throw! Jason Curles and Nathan Schultz set new PRs in the long jump as did Michael Mack and Dustyn Bull in the triple jump.

Jesy Groebli was the lone OH shot putter, and she tossed her shot 21-3, a new PR. Jessica Foster, in her first meet, threw the javelin 43-6 after running both the 100 and 200 meter dash. Christina Alexander set PRs in both the long and triple jump.

Freshman baseball 4-13 vs Bellingham

Received the following about Monday's game from Coach Day.

"The Wildcat C-team lost a close one against Bellingham Monday night. After spotting Bellingham an 8-2 lead, the Wildcats put up 5 runs in the bottom of the 6th with all nine batters coming to the plate. However, they left two runners in scoring position in the 6th and one more in the 7th and fell to the Red Raiders 8-7. Peter Franssen was 1 for 3 scoring twice and stealing 3 bases. A defensive highlight came when Mitch Mertins, Josh Ekberg, and Zach Zimmer turned the first, traditional 6-4-3 double play of the season. Behind the plate, Ben Miller threw out two runners when they tried to steal 3rd base."

Youth Soccer 4-11 at Ft. Nugent Park

The spring youth soccer season is underway, with over a dozen games played at Ft. Nugent Park Saturday morning. As usual, especially with the younger players, the #1 rule of the day was to have fun, and it was readily apparent that all the players were enjoying themselves.

The Oak Harbor Sports Report went to 3 games to take photos, and they are posted below:

BU-6 Knights vs Gators

BU-6 Raptors vs an unidentified green team

GU-9 Spirit vs Kreig Construction

JV Baseball 4-10 Stanwood

Things were looking a bit bleak for the JV baseball team last Friday as they found themselves down 4-1 in the 4th, and down 5-3 in the 7th with 2 outs.

However, a couple of key hits drove in two runs to send the game into extra innings. The JV defense shut out Stanwood in the top of the 8th, then Josh Evans was able to sneak home during a throw to 1st base, sliding in under the throw to the catcher to give OH the win 6-5.

78 images from the game are posted HERE.

Track 4-11 at Monroe

Girls Tennis 4-9 vs Everett

There were a couple of shifts in the lineup in Thursday’s varsity tennis match vs Everett. #2 singles Laurin Rico moved to #1 doubles with Erin Neilon taking her place.

The Wildcats swept the singles matches, with Jennifer Jansen winning 6-3, 6-3, Neilon winning 4-6, 6-3, (10-4), Molly Deleon 6-2, 6-0 and Cady O’Dell 6-2, 6-0.

The #1 doubles team of Rico and Valerie Loders won 6-1, 6-4, but the #2 team lost in 3 sets and #3 team in straight sets.

In extra matches, Jordan Faralan and Jessica James won 8-3 over their Seagull opponents.

The win improves OH to 3-2 on the season.

In JV action, only the #1 doubles team of Alexa Holmly and Cassie Gianino could get a win, and that went to tiebreaker in the 1st set. The final score in that match was 7-6(4), 6-4.

In extra matches, the teams of Joyce Abines/Molly Van Dam, Kim Kerly/Ashley Leslie, and Juliane Meenan/Jordan Trask all won convincingly.

Coach Brown had this to say about the JV matches: “While the final score was decisive, the match was actually very close and tightly contested. This could easily have been a 5-2 win for the team. It was a good match, and test for the girls after the lay-off from the spring break. Although Oak Harbor eventually lost all four singles, three of them were winning their first sets up until the last moments of the set. Shannon Neilon at #2, and Michelle Maxwell, at #4 both took their matches down to the final tiebreaker, and even those were very close. Audrey Andoy had two very close sets.”

“First doubles, Cassie and Alexa, had never played together before; they had not even played doubles before, and manged to win a tough match. Joyce and Molly, Kim and Ashley, and Juliane and Jordan at 5th, 6th, and 7th doubles each all played great matches to wins.”

Boys Golf 4-9 @ WGCC

The Varsity Boys Golf Team hosted Everett, Arlington and Jackson at the Whidbey Golf & Country Club on Thursday. While Jackson ran away with the match, 27 strokes ahead of the 2nd place Seagulls. OH finished 3rd, and the 3 teams were clustered closely, with only 23 strokes separating them.

Phil Reedy, shooting a 3-over-par 75 on the dry but windy course was the medalist. Judd Ford tallied an 83, Brandon Kenworthy 82, Matt Fikse 100 and Logan White 92.

We were there to shoot some photos during warmups and at the first tee, but had to leave after that.

Boys Soccer 4-8 vs Stanwood

The varsity Soccer team hosted Stanwood for their 2nd meeting of the year last Wednesday at Wildcat Memorial Stadium with the same results – a Wildcat win.

Three different OH players got in on the scoring – Greg Wolfe, Michael Shevchuk and Kevin Flavin, while Jack O’Neil had several saves and recorded a shutout. The win takes the Wildcats above .500 with a 4-3 overall record.

The JV team was down most of the game and a late goal closed the Spartan lead to 2-1. However, Stanwood tightened their defense and prevented a second Oak Harbor score to secure their win.

Pics from both JV and varsity games, along with a few ‘faces in the crowd’ photos are posted HERE.

Varsity softball - 4/7 and 4/8 vs Stanwood and Arlington

After breezing through preseason games, the Wildcats are now finding it hard to put runs on the board and keep opponents from doing the same.

Hosting Stanwood last Tuesday, the ‘Cats had only a single hit, by Lauren Miller, and gave up 8 runs. Coach Weikle says that only 2 Spartan runs were earned, the rest scored due to fielding errors, and that “as a team, we killed our pitcher and catcher again”. She wants the girls to “get angry and pumped up during the games” and “back each other up”.

On the plus side, shortstop Kaylee Meders had a great game with no errors, 8 putouts, and assisted on preventing a stolen base.

Wednesday’s game against Arlington was similar, with OH allowing 11 Arlington runs while scoring only 1 of their own.

Softball 3-30 vs Monroe - updated with JV results

The varsity softball team again hard a hard time getting runs on the board in the game against Monroe on March 30th. Kayla Ratliff and Kaylee Meders each had a hit, but Monoe batters knocked off 4 home runs on their way to a 17-0 win.

On the bright side, starting pitcher Ratliff recorded 4 strikeouts and only 5 earned runs while walking only 2 Monroe batters.

The JV played hard, but struggled with pitching, allowing 10 walks and two batters hit by pitches. Monroe took advantage of the Wildcat struggles, winning 13-3. On offense, Reily Sanderfur and Shelby Kirk hit well, and the team gets a day off before resuming practice.

The softball team will be at home Tuesday, April 7th vs Stanwood.
