BBB 2015-12-21 vs Mariner

Clinging to a 55-52 lead over visiting Mariner Monday, the Oak Harbor High School boys' basketball squad was 1:42 away from its first win of the season.

Then things fell apart in a way rarely witnessed.

Unable to get a single shot off the rest of the way, crippled by turnovers and an inability to stop the Marauders on the offensive boards, the 'Cats slumped to an eventual 61-55 loss.

The defeat left Oak Harbor sitting at 0-7 heading into the Bulldog Holiday Classic in Mount Vernon next week.

Up until the end, the Wildcats had stretches of inspired ball against Mariner, taking an early advantage at 6-2, then storming back in the second half to reclaim the lead.

Down 24-14 at the half, Oak Harbor threw down 23 points in a torrid third-quarter run.

The two teams swapped the lead several times in the fourth, before Mariner free throws (the Marauders hit 10 of 12 in the final quarter) and Oak Harbor's inability to shoot at the end doomed the 'Cats.

Dyllan Harris paced Oak Harbor with a team-high 19, dropping in 16 of those in the second-half rally.

Adam Nelson added eight, Savion Passmore and Josh Cote each went for seven, while Preston Rankin (4), Sean Erskine (4), Diangelo McKinney (3), Ozell Jackson (2) and Taeson Hardin (1) rounded out the 'Cat scorers.

JV goes wire-to-wire:

Slow and steady wins the game.

Oak Harbor's second-string squad never had any huge runs, but they didn't need them, steadily adding to its lead in every quarter.

A 15-12 lead after one became a five-point margin by the half, six after three and ten by the end, as the Wildcats bounced Mariner 64-54.

Gabe Salinger captured the spotlight with a game-high 20, while Joseph Arinaza and TJ Passmore each chipped in with 10 of their own.

Marcus Carr (9), Gavin Allen (4), Justin Ellison (4), Haven Brown (4) and Jordan Bell (3) also penciled their names into the score-book.

C-Team grabs blowout win:

Dorian Hardin tossed in 17, including three treys, and the young 'Cats romped to a 56-42 win.

Oak Harbor put the game away early, ripping off a 16-7 run in the first before stretching the halftime margin to a solid 14-point spread.

Terell Crumpton dropped nine to back Hardin, while Kevin Schuldt (8), Andrew Balloy (8), Kanoa King (6), Trevor Mondor (3), Austin Boesch (3) and Evan Nadeau (2) also scored.

MS Volleyball 2015-12-10 OHMS vs NWMS

by David Svien

The battle for town supremacy was a one-sided affair.

Oak Harbor's two middle schools clashed last week for volleyball bragging rights, and Oak Harbor Middle School made a huge statement, sweeping both varsity matches against arch-rival North Whidbey Middle School.

OHMS snagged a 25-15, 25-15, 25-18 win in 8th grade play and a 25-13, 25-18, 25-9 victory at the 7th grade level.

Vanessa Thayer, Audrey Moyes, Emily Lamb, Gredina DeGuzman and Lorelyn DeGuzman all collected kills for the 7th grade Wildcats, while Anabel Thayer and Catherine Sublet both skied for a block.

OHMS 7th grade coach Ranee Bristow singled out several of her other plays for praise, as well.

She noted Annie Salinger ("for many aces with her jump floater serve"), Jordyn Burks ("exceptional leadership and communication") and Samantha Palanca ("outstanding passing.")

Photos from both JV and Varsity 8th grade matches are posted HERE

by David Svien

All or nothing.

The wins brought Oak Harbor's season record to 4-2.

Seven Wildcats swept both of their matches, including freshman Michael Fisken, who earned his first two varsity wins via forfeits.

BBB 2015-12-112 vs Anacortes

Dyllan Harris won the duel. Anacortes won the battle.

Despite getting a game-high 29 from their superstar Saturday, the Oak Harbor High School boys' basketball squad fell 72-56 to visiting Anacortes.

The non-conference loss dropped the Wildcats to 0-5.

Harris was on fire, tossing in 12 in the first half, then upping things with a 10-point third quarter and a seven-point fourth.

But, he had very little help, as no other 'Cat topped eight points, while Anacortes had four guys score 13 or more, topped by Trystan Lowry's 23.

The Seahawks blew the game open fairly early, running out to a 26-13 lead after the first eight minutes of play.

From there they stretched it out to a 20-point margin at the half, then coasted home after the break.

Diangelo McKinney tossed in eight for the Wildcats, while Bryce Diras (6), Sean Erskine (4), Ozell Jackson (3), Savion Passmore (2), Adam Nelson (2) and Preston Rankin (2) rounded out Oak Harbor's scorers.

JV toppled:

Take away one quarter and Oak Harbor hung with Anacortes all the way in this one.

Unfortunately, a 21-12 deficit in the third did the Wildcats in as they fell 55-43.

Haven Brown paced the 'Cats with nine points, while Weston Whitefoot and Jordan Bell banged away for eight apiece.

Marcus Carr (6), Joseph Arinaza (4), T.J. Passmore (4) and Gabe Salinger (4) also penciled their names in the score book.

Freshmen on fire:

All 14 players got in the game for at least 2 quarters, and 10 of the players scored points as the Freshman team whipped the visitors 72-55.  Individual player scores are not available.

GBB 2015-12-07 vs Squalicum

by David Svien

Bryn Langrock couldn't miss.

The Oak Harbor High School gunner went wild in the third quarter Monday, Dec. 7., hitting three-point bombs at the start, middle and tail end of the eight-minute span, lifting her hoops squad to a 48-40 win over visiting Squalicum.

Langrock finished with a team-high 12 as the Wildcat girls improved to 2-1 on the young season.

Oak Harbor put the game away with a 21-point explosion in the third, but actually kick-started things with a solid second quarter. In the middle two periods, the 'Cats went on a 36-18 run.

Going into the fourth, the Wildcats had their biggest lead of the night at 42-23, before letting the Storm back in the game a bit.

Squalicum used a 12-1 surge to get the lead down to seven, but then went cold and failed to score another point in the final minute-and-a-half of the game.

The Wildcats beat the Storm on the boards (36-28) and held their foes to just 22 percent (14-63) shooting from the floor.

Rashanna Graham tossed in nine points in support of Langrock, while Julie Jansen (7), Deja Bunch (6), Janae Payne (6), Matti Miesle (4) and AnnaBelle Whitefoot (4) rounded out the scoring stats.

JV:Take away the first quarter and the Wildcats put up a fight.

The final three quarters were a 30-28 battle in favor of Squalicum, but a 15-0 first quarter doomed Oak Harbor in what became a 45-28 loss.

Samantha Hines led the 'Cats with eight points, while Jaden Jesus tossed in seven and Alisha Wilson banked home six. Hannah Taylor (4), Jordan Wood-Pina (2) and Kayla Roy (1) rounded out the scorers.

C-Team:

Up and down all night.

Strong first and third quarters were blunted by scoreless runs in the second and fourth as the Wildcat freshmen fell 25-13.

Miranda Wilson knocked down seven to pace Oak Harbor, while Rosa Simplicicino dropped in four and Piper Fisher hit a bucket.

BBB 2015-12-04 vs Shorecrest

by David Svien

Dyllan Harris went off, but it wasn't enough.

The Oak Harbor High School senior poured in a game-high 30 Friday, Dec. 4, but the Wildcat boy's basketball squad still got stomped by visiting Shorecrest.

The 92-67 loss dropped the Wildcats to 0-2 on the young season.

Things started off nicely, with Harris dropping 10 in the opening quarter, as Oak Harbor staked itself to an 18-10 lead.

Even after taking a 25-15 hit in the second, the Wildcats were within a bucket at the break, but the visitors continued to pour it on in the second half, dropping 24 in the third, then punctuating things with a 33-point fourth quarter.

Josh Cote banged home 14 and Adam Nelson dropped in 10 in support of Harris.

JV loses:

TJ Hollins-Passmore went for a team-high 15 and Marcus Carr chipped in with 12, but the Wildcats couldn't hang with the Scots, who ran away for a 63-44 win.

C Team falls:

E'Lijah Rabideau put on a show, torching the nets for 26, as the Shorecrest freshman captured a 66-35 victory.

Oak Harbor was led by Dorian Hardin and Terrell Crumpton, who scored nine apiece. Ben Knoll added six, hitting on a pair of three-point bombs.

Wrestling 2015-12-03 vs Lynnwood and Shorewood at Shorewood HS

by David Svien

Undefeated and it wasn't even close.

Kicking off a new season with a bang Thursday, Dec. 3, the Oak Harbor High School wrestling squad creamed both teams it faced in a road match.

By the time the Wildcats were done, they had dismantled host Shorewood 48-30 and upended Lynnwood 51-27.

The matches were more lopsided than the score might indicate, as most of Shorewood's points, for example, came only because Oak Harbor couldn't fill four weights and had to forfeit those bouts.

Three 'Cats -- Garrett Stahl (120 pounds), Blake McBride (126) and Nick Dugan (170) -- collected earned wins in both of their matches, while four teammates won a match and picked up a win by forfeit.

Wrestling 2015-12-01 - Purple vs Gold

The OHHS Wrestling team kicked off the season with a fundraising Purple vs Gold match Tuesday at OHHS.

One purpose was to raise funds for the team (over $1,000 was raised), to give the athletes some live wrestling in front of a crowd, and to set the varsity/JV squads.

There were a number of good matches, with several freshmen making runs for varsity slots.

Photos from the evening's action are posted HERE.

The wrestlers are at Shorewood on Thursday, at Edmonds for a tournament on Saturday, then host the first of two home events on December 8th, a double dual vs Glacier Peak and Edmonds-Woodway.
