Middle School Wrestling - @ Burlington and @ Mt. Baker

The Wildcat United wrestling team got in a lot of wrestling this week with two double dual meets, one against LaVenture and Burlington at Lucille Umbarger Elementary School in Burlington, and the second against Mt. Baker and Cascade at Mt. Baker Middle School in Mt. Vernon.

Although Wildcat United as a team lost by a single point in the dual vs LaVenture on March 8th, several wrestlers earned big wins. Vester, Altman, Johnston and Gerber all won by pin, Charlesworth won by tech. fall, Billups won by major decision and Rios by decision.

On Friday the team traveled to Mt. Baker Middle School in Mt. Vernon to face the host team and Cascade Middle School from Sedro-Woolley.

Against Mt. Baker, the meet went quickly with only 12 total matches wrestled and all by 2 ending with a pin. Wildcat United winners were Esquela (pin), Quinday (pin at the buzzer), Cetin (pin), Vester (tech fall), Charlesworth (pin) and Cosper (pin).

It was a different story against Cascade. The Sedro team was strong and wrestled extremely well, allowing on 3 Wildcat United wins in 15 matches. Johnston won a close 7-4 decision and Parmenter and Sapanza both pinned their opponents.

Middle School Girls Basketball 2011-03-09 NWMS vs LaVenture

North Whidbey Middle School ended the 2010-2011 girls basketball season on a mixed note Wednesday afternoon at NWMS against LaVenture MS

In the 7th grade game, the Cougars found themselves down 6-2 at the end of the 1st period, but came back to take an 11-8 lead at halftime. They held the lead into the 4th period when LaVenture took a 19-18 lead with 3:03 left in the game. Then, with less than a minute to go, Morgan Kenaley got a steal and drove down the court to score and give the lead back to NW, 20-19. Ten seconds later, Rosie Mooki added some free throws then sealed with win with the last of her 16 points as North Whidbey held on to win 25-19. In addition to Mooki's 16 points, Hannah Knoll scored 4, Mariel Empinado and Kenaley 2 each, Reiley Auger and Kiesha Watts 1 each.

While the 8th grade defense played well, holding LaVenture to 33 points, the offensive woes continued as the team scored only a single field goal in the game, a 3rd quarter bucket by Sydney Erickson.

OHMS finishes their season with a trip to Cascade MS, then the 7th and 8th grades from both schools will combine to form the Wildcat United track team in April.

Whidbey Island Bicycle Club 2011-03-05 - Mussels in the Kettles

The Whidbey Island Bicycle Club sponsored their inaugural event this past Saturday in conjunction with the Penn Cove MusselFest.

The non competitive Mountain Bike and Poker Run featured 3 levels of difficulty going along several trails in the Kettles area.

Middle School Girls Basketball 2011-03-02 OHMS vs LaVenture

In their second meeting this year, the LaVenture teams showed they learned from that first game and but that to use.

At the end of the 1st quarter of the 7th grade game, the Oak Harbor girls,who won big in the first meeting, found themselves down 10-9, with all the points scored by Jinai Ekberg. In the 2nd the defense woke up and the offense got on track and the Panthers won the 2nd period 25-2 to lead 34-12 at halftime and never looked back. In the end it was Oak Harbor 7th grade girls 46, LaVenture 23. Ekberg finished with 19 points to lead the team. Suzanne Kaltenbach scored 8, Krimson Rector and Janae Payne 6 each, Taylor Heidt 4 and Deja Bunch 3.

The 8th grade game was similar, with the Panthers down by 1 point at the first buzzer, 8-7. The Panther turned it around, but it was still a close 22-18 Panther lead at halftime. Things really got going on defense in the 3rd period as the girls held LaVenture to just 2 points, which put the game out of reach. The final was OHMS 8th grade 53, LaVenture 32. Nalani Gabbert scored 12 for the Panthers and 8 other girls got on the board as the scoring was spread around. Brook Peplinski finished with 9, Faith Callies 8, Sierra Southwick 6, Hayley Lundstrom 5, Rebecca Pabona and Michelle Braegger 4, McKinley Kellogg 3 and Lauryn Plush 2.

Middle School Wrestling 2011-02-28 @ Anacortes

After having their first meet (and only home meet) canceled due to snow, the Wildcat United wrestling team took to the mat for the first time Monday at Anacortes Middle School.

Anacortes didn't have a JV team, so all the JV matches were WU wrestlers going against each other.

Catanzaio beat Bennett 12-5, Curtin pinned Lamar in 1:03, Zuniga pinned Felipe in 2:11, Ewing needed all but 5 seconds of his match before pinning Bryant. Papuga beat Cetin 15-10 and Quinday defeated Graves 7-4, only after Graves nearly pinned Quinday.

The varsity matches went back and forth with both schools winning and losing in streaks.

Winners for Wildcat United were Raimondi (pin 2:13), Constant (pin 1:11), Altman (pin 0:58), Vester (8-3), Bertram (pin 3:58), and Gerber (pin 2:46). Eccleston and Cosper both won by forfeit.

However, the wins weren't enough as Anacortes squeaked out a 50-39 win.

Next for the wrestlers is a trip to Burlington on March 8th and Mt. Baker on March 11th.

Youth Rec Basketball 2011-02-26

This week there are photos of the games at Oak Harbor Middle School - the 1st and 2nd grade games and the girls 3rd and 4th grade games.

The Rec Basketball league ends next Saturday with a tournament at both middle schools.

A big thanks go out to Bryan Schulle for organizing and running the league this year. Without his efforts and the efforts of the volunteer coaches and referees, there would be no league.
