MS VB 2012-11-15

The middle schools kicked off their home 2012 season with a match at OHMS Thursday afternoon vs Mt. Baker.  NWMS was scheduled to be at home last Wednesday, but had to change it to an away game due to a School Levy rally in the gym.

For being the first match of the season for the Panthers, the 7th grade varsity girls played quite well.  They won their first game 25-20, stumbled a bit in the second, falling 23-25, then came back to dominate the final game 25-18 for the 2-1 victory.

The 8th grade varsity games were much closer, with two of the 3 games going to extra points.  The games were all characterized by the same pattern - OHMS would get a big lead, Mt. Baker would catch up, then the Panthers would dig in their heels to win the game.  The score for the first two games was 26-24, giving the Panthers the win,  In the 3rd game it looked over early, as OHMS was up 23-7, but the Grizzles served 10 straight times for points, but again the Panthers held on to win the game 25-18 for the three-game sweep.

Next week on Tuesday, OHMS travels across town to NWMS for an exhibition match.  Admission is free, and if you go, expect a very loud gym, as the girls get very excited and cheer loudly for their team!

Girls swim - State meet 2012

The OHHS girls swim team swam to a respectable 12th place as a team in the state meet this year and featured a 2nd place individual finish.

In the 200 meter medley relay, the OH team, consisting of Therese Desquitado, Akasha Trisler, Emily Huffer and Marissa Morris finished in 8th place, and the 200m free relay team, featuring the same girls, finished 7th.

Emily Huffer placed 6th in the 100m butterfly and was 2nd place in the 100m backstroke.

With a team laden with underclassmen, look for good things out of the team next year!

Youth Wrestling 2011-11-10 at Mt. Vernon

Youth wrestling kicked off the 2012-2013 season with a pair of tournaments at Mt. Vernon HS this past weekend.

Saturday was an open tournament, and out of 27 teams that scored points in the event, the Whidbey Wildcat Wrestling club finished tied for 5th place with 11 points.

Ten wrestlers made the early morning trip, and half of them were champions in their age and weight brackets.  An additional two wrestlers finished in 3rd and one more in 4th.

Sunday was a novice only league tournament.  Only wrestlers in their first or second year of wrestling were allowed to compete, and no team scored were compiled.

In Sunday's event, Oak Harbor entered 9 wrestlers, and all of them finished in the top four.  There was a single weight bracket champion, five 2nd-place finishers, one in 3rd place and two in 4th place.

Youth Football 2012-11-10 Cougars vs Sedro, NCYFL championship game

Saturday morning at 10:30am, the Oak Harbor midget Cougars took the field for the championship game of the 2012 season.  The Cougars finished in 4th place with a 4-3 record, but won their way through the bracket to arrive at the final game vs Sedro Woolley White.  Sedro went 6-1 in the regular season and was seeded in 3rd place.

The Cougars were looking to avenge an earlier 20-0 loss to Sedro, and things looked good early.  Sedro ran a total of 4 plays in their first two series.  They fumbled on 3 of them, and OH recovered two.  OH used one of the fumble recoveries to get on the board first after a 23-yard TD run.  The kick failed, but OH led 6-0.

Sedro tied the score early in the 2nd period with a 65-yard run, but the Cougars came right back to take a 14-6 lead on a 5-yard plunge.

A long kickoff return by Sedro set up an 8-yard pass TD, knotting the score at 14 with 4:49 left in the half, and that score would stand until the horn.

In the second half, Sedro scored about halfway through the quarter to take a 20-14 lead, then scored again late in the quarter to boost their score to 26-14.

The Cougars found some life late in the game and were driving towards a score, but a pass thrown by Oak Harbor was intercepted by Sedro Woolley with just over 3 minutes left in the game, sealing the SW win.

Although there were some tears, the boys left the field with their heads high, and through a tunnel of cheering parents who chanted "We are proud of you" over and over.

The Cougars should be proud - the only OHYFL team to reach the championship game this year!

AAU GBB 2012-11-10 SWISH league vs Stanwood White

The Catz, Oak Harbor's girls AAU basketball team is again entered in the SWISH league in Mt. Vernon.  This past Saturday, the 3rd week of games, the second of league play, the Catz took on Stanwood White in a game at LaVenture Middle School.

While the team is entered in the 8th grade division, some of the girls on the team are actually in 8th grade.  Since there is only one Oak Harbor team, coach Gary Brundidge takes any girl from grade 5 to 8.

Missing three key players, the girls played tough early against Stanwood's full-court press, even taking a lead early, but the experience and size of the Stanwood team took over and the Catz were down 19-10 at halftime.  By the end of the 3rd period, the Catz were behind by 12 points and just couldn't find a way to get past the press and cut into the Stanwood lead.

In the end it was 33-20 for Stanwood and the Catz are now 1-3 overall for the season.

Youth Football 2012-11-03

And then there was one.

Three Oak Harbor teams participated in North Cascades Youth Football semi-final playoff games last Saturday, but only one emerged victorious.

In the Senior division, the Wildcats lost a close game to Ferndale, 17-8.  Ferndale plays Burlington on 11/10 at Mt. Vernon for the championship.

The Junior division Pumas fell 16-6 to Lakewood, who will play Sedro Blue for the title, also at MVHS.

Finally the Midget division Cougars beat Lakewood 36-30, avenging an earlier 38-12 loss.  The Cougars play at 10:30am on 11/10 at Mt. Vernon HS against Sedro White.  Sedro won the first meeting 20-0.

FB 2012-11-02 playoff at Peninsula

Friday night the Wildcats made the long drive down to Gig Harbor to take on the Peninsula Seahawks in Gig Harbor.  The Seahawks finished the season with a 5-0 record in the SPSL 3A and 6-2 overall.  Oak Harbor was 3-1 in league and 6-3 overall.

Peninsula got the ball first and drive 56 yards in 7 plays to score first with 8:44 left in the first.  The Wildcats ran 10 plays on their first possession, but were able to move only 11 yards total and were forced to punt.

Peninsula's next drive was stopped by a Jojo Webster interception of a long pass, but again the Wildcats were forced to punt.  Peninsula's 3rd possession ended with a punt after CJ Shavers almost got a sack and forced a fumble that was recovered by the Seahawks.

Starting at their own 21, the Wildcats marched the length of the field in 13 plays, scoring on a 12-yard run by Isaiah Trower around the right side.  The PAT kick failed, leaving Peninsula on top 7-6 with just 2:39 left until half.

The Seahawks broke out their trick plays with time winding down in the half, and ran the hook-and-ladder play to perfection.  The play went 42 yards to put Peninsula up 14-6 at halftime.

OH got the ball to start the 2nd half and drove down to the Seahawk 32, where a fumble was recovered by Peninsula.  A short time later, the Seahawks were facing a 4th-and-25 at the OH 45 and lined up to punt, but ran their second trick play of the game - the fake punt.  The punter carried the ball near the first down marker, got a favorable spot, and were awarded a first down after measurement.  Peninsula then went on to score on a 15-yard run play to increase their lead to 21-6.

Peninsula then scored again on the second play of the 4th quarter, a 5-yard run to boost the score to 29-6.

After another Wildcat punt, Peninsula make it 36-6 on a 33-yard run with 8:43 left in the game.

Oak Harbor got their second score of the game with 2:44 left in the game, a 2-yard run by Jon Lanningham.  The 2-point conversion failed, leaving the score 36-12.

OH forced a Seahawk punt and ran 3 plays before time expired on a 36-12 final score.

Peninsula moves on to play Nathan Hale next week, the Wildcats' season is over.

VB 2012-10-30 and 11-01 - playoffs

On Tuesday and Thursday last week the OHHS volleyball team played in the double-elimination district tournament at Pilchuck and Glacier Peak HS.

The first match Tuesday was at MPHS against WESCO South 2nd place Meadowdale, who came into the tournament with a 6-2 record, losing only to 1st-place Shorewood.  The Wildcats entered with a 3rd place finish in the North and a 5-3 league record.  In game one, the Wildcats played very sluggishly, letting Meadowdale win easily, 25-14.  Oak Harbor woke up for the 2nd game, taking it 25-20, then dropped game 3, 18-25.  In game 4, the Wildcats got it all together, whipping the Mavs 25-17, then went on to win the deciding game 5, 15-12 on a nice block by Kelsey Rankin.

Twenty minutes later, the 'Cats went up against 7-1 Stanwood in the semifinal, with the winner guaranteed a trip to the state tournament.  The whole match was a nailbiter, with Stanwood taking game one, 25-23, then OH winning game two by the same score.  Stanwood won the third game 25-21, then also won game four by an identical score.

The loss dropped Oak Harbor into the consolation bracket, needing two wins on Thursday to make it to state.

Thursday's game were at Glacier Peak, with OH starting off at 5pm against 2nd place Everett.  Oak Harbor won the first meeting, home, 3-2, then lost 3-1 at Everett.

In the first game, the Wildcats came out flat, losing 16-25, but in game two played some of their best volleyball of the year, smacking the Seagulls 25-11.  But, Everett came to win, and won both game 3 and 4 by identical 25-22 scores, eliminating the Wildcats and ending the season.

Everett went on to lose to Glacier Peak for the final state spot.  Shorewood beat Stanwood 3-0 for the District 1 crown.

Cross Country 2012-11-03 - State Championships

Saturday, both the boys and girls Oak Harbor cross country teams participated in the state meet at Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco, WA.

As expected, Glacier Peak on the girls event with 66 points.  Kamiakin was second with 141.  Oak Harbor finished in 11th place with 242 points.  The girls individual winner was Amy-Eloise Neal from Glacier peak, who finished in a time of 17:03.  Tops for the Wildcats was Christina Wicker in 10th place, then it was Alex Laiblin in 19th place and a time of 19:27.  Also in the top 50 was Jonalynn Horn in 39th.  Carlie Kenny and Ashley Everett both finished the 5,000 meter race in under 22 minutes.  No other girls results are posted at the athletics.net website.

On the boys side, North Central was first with 38 points, Kamiakin second with 75 and Oak Harbor 10th with 284 points.  Individually, the 3A winner was Joe Hardy from Seattle Prep, finishing in 15:18.  For the Wildcats it was Clayton Richardson in 48th overall in a time of 16:41.  John Rodeheffer was 61st in 16:48.  Then, all finishing between 17:02 and 17:41 it was Jason Salas, Gavin Stewart, Alex Krantz, Nathan Wagner and Patrick Mayer.

Here's the results from the Middle School Cross Country meet last week. The event concludes the middle school XC season.  Next up for the middle schools is girls volleyball, with OHMS playing their first home game on November 15th vs Mt. Baker and NWMS playing at home on the 14th vs LaVenture.
