Girls Wrestling 2014-02-08 - Sub-Regional at Mt. Vernon HS

Friday and Saturday the Oak Harbor girls wrestling team was in Mt. Vernon for their sub-regional tournament and came away with several historical firsts for Oak Harbor HS.

First, as a team, the girls won the first-ever girls wrestling trophy for OHHS, coming in 2nd place.

Lakewood and OH were close towards the end of the tournament, but Diesha O'Brien and Tricia Desquitado at 112 lbs each scored wins over Lakewood opponents to secure 2nd place team trophy.

Individually, Amber Cramsey-Behnke was sub-regional champion in her weight class winning the championship by pinfall.

Caitlynn Woodworth went to the championship match but fell in the final by pinfall.

Tricia Desquitado finished in 3rd and O'Brien 4th, with O'Brien defaulting by injury to Desquitado.

Also 3rd in her bracket was freshman Meredith Bain who won her 3rd place match by injury default.

Finally Isabel Garcia finished 5th and although not guaranteed a place in the regional tournament, will travel with the team as an alternate.

Youth Basketball 2014-02-08

All seven Oak Harbor teams were in action this past Saturday, with both of the 8th grade AA teams, Oak Harbor Black and Oak Harbor Purple in action at Mt. Vernon HS.

The Black team played a doubleheader, with the first against 4-0 Tri-City from Canada, where they fell 42-28.  In the 2nd game, which it was a bit of a rollercoaster, the Black 'Cats beat Arlington 48-37 after leading 30-15 at halftime.

Over in the other gym, the Purple 'Cats were up against Blaine.  After a slow start, Oak Harbor caught up to tie the game 14-14 at halftime.  Then, with just over a minute left, led 27-26.  That lead forced Blaine to foul the Oak Harbor players to stop the clock.  Unfortunately, the Wildcats could not make good on the free throws, then when Blaine came down the court to make their own shots, fouled the shooter.  In the end it was Blaine 29, Oak Harbor Purple 27.

Wrestling 2014-02-08 - WESCO 3A North tournament at Pilchuck

Friday and Saturday, the Wildcat boys wrestling team was at Marysville-Pilchuck HS for the WESCO 3A North tournament.  In addition to competition against the other 4 WESCO North schools - Stanwood, Everett, Getchell and Pilchuck, Ferndale, the only 3A school in the NW Conference was added to the mix.

In the end, Ferndale was crowned team champion with 369.5 points.  Everett was 2nd with 282 and Oak Harbor 3rd with 258.

Four Wildcats were crowned champions in their weight class - Christian Bertram at 113 lbs, Jeremy Vester at 132, brother Jahleel at 138 and Mark Johnston at 152 lbs.

Finishing 2nd in the event were Ray Quinday (220 lbs) and Jackson Constant (285 lbs)

Senior Jacob Dugin was 3rd at 195 lbs.

All of the above wrestlers are qualified for next weekend's regional tournament at Nathan Hale HS in Seattle.  The top 3 from the WESCO tournament face the top 5 from the Metro League tournament.

Going to the regional tournament are seniors Kekai Tarrant (160 lbs) and Kenny King (220 lbs) along with junior Tyler Adamson.  These three finished 4th in the tournament.

Finishing in 5th place was sophomore Garrett Stahl

Freshmen brothers William and Lucas Nickelson both finished in 6th place, as did junior Mike Laningham.

GBB 2014-02-06 vs Getchell - Senior night

And so it ends.  In front of an appreciative crowd, five Oak Harbor seniors played their last game in a Wildcat uniform.

All too to the court to start the final game of the season against visiting Marysville Getchell.  The first quarter of the varsity game ended with the Wildcats trailing by just 2 points, 10-8, and with 3:38 left in the 2nd the game was tied at 15 after freshman Julie Jansen sank the -and one- after a foul.

Then, three quick 3-bombs by Getchell made it 24-15, and Getchell never looked back, leading 33-20 at the half and 55-40 at the final horn.  Senior Natalie Fiallos scored 5 points - a nice three-pointer from the baseline and a pair of free throws.  Senior Liz Lym scored 4, two of them coming on a buzzer-beater to end the half.  Senior Joanna Leete finished the game with 4 points.  Other scoring was by Jansen (5), Bryn Langrock (7), Jinai Guzman (8), AnnaBelle Whitefoot (2) and Hayley Lundstrom (3).

In the freshman game, a 1-point 2nd quarter gave Getchell a 28-14 halftime lead.  However, an even worse offensive output by the visitors in the 2nd half allowed the Wildcats to come back and win 39-34.  Lydia Peplinski led the scoring with 14 points and Jaden Jesus added 13 more.  Kayle Roy finished with 5, Morgan Kenaly and Kyanna Prosch with 3 each and Aelizah Espirtu 1.

The JV squad also got a win, but they also had to work to get it.  After a 4-4 tie in the 1st quarter, the Wildcats outscored their opponent in the 2nd to lead 18-13 at the half.  In the 3rd, Oak Harbor could not get a single shot to fall into the basket, and at the end of the 3rd, the team were tied again, this time at 18.  A strong defensive effort in the 4th held Getchell to just 6 points and the JV squad won their game 30-26.

BBB 2014 02-01 and 04 vs Ferndale and Pilchuck

Saturday was not a good day for the Wildcats to play basketball.  Making up a snowed-out game against Ferndale, OH teams went 0-3 for the evening.

In the dome, Josh Cote put up 25 points, but the Freshman team fell 46-55.  Also scoring for OH were Lollar 6, Nelson 5, Mitchell 4, and Loera, Lage, and Baker 2 each.

Sean Erskine led the JV team with 14 points in their 45-62 loss.  Getting points along with Sean were JJ Johnson 9, Savion Passmore and Jake Sturdevant 8, and Preston Rankin, Paul Quinday and Alex Waner 2 each.

The varsity game was a shootout.  After a sluggish start, the Wildcat varsity squad revved up and scored a season-high 74 points, but allowed 81.  Dyllan Harris led the squad with 24 points and Drew Washington was right behind with 21.  Elijah Smith and Gabe Groenig each contributed 10 points, Zach Gibbs 7 and Shane Huttula 2.

On Monday the boys were back on the court, this time against Marysville Pilchuck.  In the dome, the freshmen team lit up the scoreboard. All but one player scored, 5 were in double figures and the team ended the game with 74 to MP's 53.  Cote again led with 21.  JJ Mitchell had 12, Nelson 11, Zylstra and Lollar 10 each, Ellison 3, Lage, McKenna and Loera 2 each and Bailey 1.

The JV game was a nail-biter, with the JV squad falling by just 3 points, 56-53.  McKinney scored a team-high 14 points, Waner 9, Erskine and Rankin 8 each, Passmore 7, Sturdevant 4 and Bellamy 4.

It was another high-scoring affair for the varsity nightcap, which was an episode of the Drew Washington show.  Drew made a statement in his final home game as a Wildcat, scoring all 8 of the team's 1st-quarter points and finishing with 44 total.  The effort wasn't enough and again the Wildcats fell short, losing 67-75.  In addition to Washington's 44 points, Dyllan Harris scored 15, Zach Gibbs 4, Elijah Smith 3 and Gabe Groenig 1.

Youth basketball 2014-02-01

Nearing the halfway point in the winter SWISH league in Skagit County, most of the Oak Harbor teams (there are a lot this year) are doing well.

There are a total of 7 teams, two in the 4/5th grade division, one each 6th and 7th grade, and three 8th grade teams.

The 4/5th grade Gold team is 4-0 on the season, winning 34-19 last Saturday and the Purple team is 3-1, winning both ends of a doubleheader, 25-14 and 19-17 last Saturday.

The 6th grade team is 2-2, and won a very close game Saturday against Mobile Merchandisers from the Mt. Vernon area.  Oak Harbor led 14-10 at halftime and the game went down to the wire before the 'Cats pulled off the 22-20 victory.

The 7th grade team is struggling, falling on Saturday 35-16 and is now 0-3 on the season.

The 8th grade Gold team is 2-2, splitting a back-to-back doubleheader on Saturday.  In the first game, Oak Harbor dominated the Skagit Valley Sonics 41-27 and in the 2nd game led Marysville 27-17 at the half, but the long morning took it's toll in the second half and the Gold Cats fell 34-47.

Also at 2-2 the 8th grade Black team also split a doubleheader, losing the first game 27-37 and winning the second game 42-34.

Last but not least, the 8th grade Purple team fell 54-40 to drop their record to 1-2.

Next weekend, Feb 8th, the photographer will be at Mt. Vernon HS, taking photos of both the Purple and Black 8th grade teams in their games that start at 5:50pm.

GBB 2014-01-31 Shorecrest

Friday night it was just JV and Varsity as Oak Harbor took on the Shorecrest Scots.

The JV game was a study in contrasts.  Oak Harbor jumped to a 7-0 first quarter lead and held a 13-6 advantage going into the half.  The two teams played even in the 3rd quarter, ending with OH leading 23-16.

That's when it got bad.  Oak Harbor's shooting went cold, scoring only 2 points in the quarter while Shorecrest scored 11.  What's really irksome is an error by the officials.  Shorecrest scored with 15.2 seconds left on the clock to take the lead 26-25.  Coach Collins attempted to call a time out, but not one of the three officials was looking at the benches for possible time out requests.  As a result, the ball was put into play and got all the way to half court.  By this time coach Collins was out on the court trying to get the attention of an official to get a time out.  Since he was out on the court during play, he was hit with a Technical Foul.  Now the clock was down to 10.3 seconds and Shorecrest was going to get two free throws and the ball back.  The Scots sank only one free throw, to make it 27-25.

Oak Harbor was able to deflect the inbounds pass off a Shorecrest player, and now OH would get the ball, but now with only 9.9 seconds left.  A 3-point attempt and the try to put it back up from under the next were unsuccessful and the Wildcats fell 27-25 in a game that will leave a bad taste in everyone.

Rosie Mooki led the team with 10 points, JP finished with 5, Brook Peplinski scored 4, along with RG, and Lexi Jones scored 2.

In Varsity action, the Wildcat were outmatched by the 14-4 Scots and fell 65-36.

Jinai Guzman scored 10 for the Wildcats, while Jamie Estrella and Joanna Leete each scored 6.  Julie Jansen finished with 5, Hayley Lundstrom and Bryn Langrock 3 each, Courtney Triplett 2 and Liz Lym 1.

The girls play Tuesday night at Pilchuck before winding up the season at home for Senior Night against Marysville Getchell on Thursday the 6th.  Playing their last game as a Wildcat will be Courtney Triplett, Jamie Estrella, Natalie Fiallos, Liz Lym and Joanna Leete.  Come to the game and give these girls the sendoff they deserve.

Wrestling 2014-01-30 vs Getchell

With a big 66-15 victory over visiting Marysville-Getchell, the Wildcat wrestling team won the league championship with an undefeated 4-0 league record.

Not all JV matches were recorded, as time was an issue and the final matches were moved into the mat room for the Senior Night introductions.

Of the 12 matches wrestled in the main gym, Oak Harbor won 7, with all the OH wins coming by pinfall.  Some notable matches were at 106 with Thomas pinning Lockwood in just 20 seconds, and Schule escaping from an early takedown and recording a first round pin.

In the varsity event, Oak Harbor got off to a good start with a pin by Garrett Stahl in 45 seconds at 106 pounds.  In fact, every match but one wrestled that night was ended by pinfall. 

Other Wildcat first-round pins were recorded by Johnston and Quinday.  2nd round winners were  Bertram and both Vesters.  Dugin waited until the 3rd round to get his pin. 

Winning by forfeit were Tarrant, Zafra, Laningham and Constant.

Next up for the Wildcats is a trip to Marysville next weekend for the sub-regional/district meet at Pilchuck, then the following weekend to Nathan Hale HS in Seattle for the region 1 meet.

GBB 2014-01-29 vs Everett

It was a rough night for the freshmen and varsity squads against Everett, as both were held scoreless for an entire quarter during their games.

The Freshman final was OH 23, Everett 46, with Kyanna Prosch scoring 7 and Katelyn Jandreau dropping a pair of threes for her 6 points. Morgan Kenaly scored 4, Kayla Roy 3, Maria Bernal-Chantaca 2 and Jaden Jesus 1.

In the varsity game, Joanna Leete led the team with 16 points, 10 in the second quarter.  Julie Jansen and Bryn Langrock scored 3 each and Jinai Guzman and Brook Peplinski 2 each in the 26-70 loss.

The bright spot in the night was the JV team.  Behind 13 points by Rahsanna Graham, the JV girls won 34-17.  In addition to RG, Rosie Mooki scored 7, Janae Payne 4, Sierra Southwick and Lexi Jones 3 each, and Michaela Dasch and Brook Peplinski 2 each.

Wrestling 2014-01-28 vs Everett

If you weren't in the OHHS gym Tuesday night, you missed one of the most exciting wrestling meets ever held!

Trailing most of the match, the Wildcats were down 35-19 with just 3 matches to go.  Needing at least two pins to get the win, the Wildcats went to work.

At 195 lbs it was Dugin vs Hawkins.  Hawkins got an early takedown, but Dugin escaped, but was taken down again.  Now down 4-1, Dugin got a quick reversal, then put Hawkins on his back and got the pin.  The score was now Everett 35, OH 25.

Next up was Ray Quinday vs Monar.  Ray has struggled at times this year, but last night, when the team needed him the most, he stepped up, got in a nice throw, and pinned Monar in 1:14.  Team scores are now Everett 35, OH 31.

Ending the night with the heavyweights, Jackson Constant needed a major decision to tie the meet, and a technical fall or pin for OH to win.

Thirty-two seconds later, Oak Harbor was the meet winner by a final score of Oak Harbor 37, Everett 35.

The win gives OH the league championship.

JV action was not so even, with Garcia, Dixon and Burdick the only OH winners in 11 matches.

Thursday Getchell comes to town for senior night.

Wrestling 2014-01-25 - Lynden Tournament

Last Saturday, the Wildcat wrestling team traveled north to the Lynden Annual Invitational tournament and in the 17-team tournament left with a 2nd place team standing and 3 individual champions.

106 - Garrett Stahl tied for 5th
113 - Christian Bertram won with wins of 12-6, Fall and 9-6
132 - Jeremy Vester won with wins of 14-2, 11-1, Fall and 9-1
138 - Jahleel Vester finished 2nd, winning by fall, 7-1 and Fall before losing the final 5-2.
152 - Mark Johnston won with wins of 16-2, Fall, Fall and Fall.
160 - Kekai Tarrant tied for 3rd
182 - Mike Laningham tied for 5th
220 - Kenny King tied for 5th
285 - Jackson Constant finished 2nd, winning 11-7, Fall and 13-7 before being pinned in the final.
185 - Tyler Adamson tied for 5th

The overall team winner was Glacier Peak with 162 points.  Oak Harbor was 2nd wiht 145 and Mt. Baker HS 3rd with 124.

The wrestlers finally get to show off at home this week, with their first home meet tonight at OHHS vs Everett, with the conference championship on the line.

Two days later the team ends the dual season with Senior Night on Thursday against Marysville Getchell.

BBB for the week ending 2014-01-23, vs Glacier Peak and Stanwood

Last week was not a good one for Oak Harbor boys basketball.

Tuesday evening the guys took on the Glacier Peak Grizzlies and fell in all 3 games.

The freshman team sputtered on offense, scoring in double digits only in the 3rd quarter in their 56-25 loss.  Individually, Joshua Cote scored 8, Princeton Lollar 5, Kurtis Zylstra 4, Ty Baker 3,  Cody McKenna and Eli Loera 2 each and James Lage 1.

At the same time, the JV squad was in the main gym, and after leading 16-12 at the end of the first quarter, scored only 2 points in the 2nd quarter and trailed at halftime 24-18.  While the 3rd and 4th quarter were better, the Grizzlies prevailed 53-36. DiAngelo McKinney scored 10 for the JV 'Cats, Alex Waner and Savion Passmore scored 5 each, Sean Erskine 4, JJ Johnson and Paul Quinday 3 each, and Ben Fikse and Tanner Walker finished with 2 each.

In the varsity game, like the JV game, the first quarter was close, with the 'Cats trailing 14-12, and at halftime 30-23.  The 3rd quarter was the team's downfall, as GP went on a 14-5 run to take a commanding lead at the end of the 3rd.  Although OH outscored Glacier Peak 22-19 in the final quarter, the Wildcats fell 63-50.  Drew Washington scored 16 to pace the team, with Dyllan Harris also in double-digits with 10.  Zach Gibbs finished with 7 points, Zach Jones and Elijah Smith 6 each, Gabe Groening 3 and Shane Huttula 2.

Two days later it was league-leading and undefeated Stanwood in the OHHS gym.

The freshman team struggled early, but a brilliant 2nd quarter, led by 10 points from Joshua Cote made it a 5-point game at the half, with the Wildcats trailing 31-26.  While the OH defense held Stanwood to just 9 points in the 3rd quarter, the offense produced only 6 points, and Stanwood prevailed with a 50-37 win.  Cote again led the team, adding another 9 to his 10-point 2nd period outburst to finish with 19.  Lollar scored 5 and  Zylstra 3, with Adam Nelson, JJ Mitchell, Ellison and Loera ending with 2 points each.

Just as they did two days prior, the JV squad had an outstanding 1st quarter, scoring 17 points and trailing by only 5 at the first buzzer, but never got back on track and scored just 15 points for the remainder of the game, losing 78-32.  Scoring in this game was spread fairly evenly, with Preston Rankin leading the team in this game with 7 points.  Johnson scored 6, Fikse 5, McKinney 4, Passmore and Erskine 3, D'Andre Bellamy 2, and Quinday and Waner with 1 point each.

The varsity game was also close in the first quarter, with stellar Wildcat defense holding the visitors to just 10 points, but Stanwood adjusted well to the Wildcats and won 70-38.  Washington again was the scoring leader with 15.  Harris scored 9, Groening, Gibbs and Jones 4 each and freshman Jordan Davenport scoring 2 points.
