FB 2014-10-17 varsity at Stanwood

Destiny.

After rolling hapless Stanwood 56-13 Friday, Oct. 17, the Oak Harbor High School football squad is headed towards the showdown game everyone expected from the first play of the season.

The Wildcats (5-1 overall, 4-0 in the 3A Wesco North) will host Marysville-Pilchuck (6-1, 4-0) Oct. 24, as the two teams will face off for the division title for the third consecutive season.

Now the only trick is to change its fate, as Oak Harbor has lost those last two meetings.

The 'Cats took care of business along the way, refusing to look past Stanwood and instead opting to merely bury them.

Quickly and efficiently.

After forcing a punt on the opening possession, holding Stanwood to five yards on three plays, Oak Harbor drove 57 yards for a touchdown in just three short, brutal plays.

Princeton Lollar grabbed the final 39 yards himself, bolting to the end zone for the first of many Wildcat scores on the evening.

Then, for one brief, fleeting moment the hosts seemed to think they had a shot to upend their powerful Whidbey rivals.

After setting the 'Cat defense on its heels with a long pass, Stanwood used a 21-yard run to potentially even things up.

The moment was gone in a flash, however, as the extra point was short, leaving Oak Harbor clinging to a 7-6 lead.

Bolstered, perhaps, by the whim of fate, the Wildcats rolled off seven consecutive first-half touchdowns to thoroughly destroy the will of the Spartans.

The rout as so bad, it was 42-6 before the FIRST QUARTER ended.

Stanwood wouldn't see the end zone again until the first play of the fourth quarter, when they punched the ball in from three yards out against an Oak Harbor defense that was playing its JV team at that point.

The Wildcats, who had a lot more chances to celebrate touchdowns than Stanwood, spread out the scoring load.

Lollar added a 30-yard scoring strike from Clay Doughty for his second TD, while Dejon Devroe matched Lollar with two scores. He hauled in a 35-yard pass from Doughty for one and ran 42 yards for the other.

Dyllan Harris (69-yard kickoff return), Zach Jones (29-yard run), Chris Humphries (23-yard fumble return) and Quinn Karney (1-yard run) also scored for Oak Harbor.

FB 2014-10-13 JV vs Getchell

Monday night's JV game with Getchell didn't beat the rain, but the Wildcats beat the Chargers 26-12.

Oak Harbor got the ball first, and after a 49-yard run by Brycin McIntyre down to the 16, Ryan Valencia punched in from a yard out to make it 6-0 not quite 4 minutes into the game.

Getchell's first drive was stopped by a McIntyre interception, but on the first play, Getchell picked it back.  The Chargers wound up punting.

The Wildcat's second drive was flag-filled, with an apparent 64-yard TD run by Ty Baker called back.  One flag helped the 'Cats.  On a 4-5 near midfield, QB Taylor Kolste worked his count, causing Getchell to jump and prolong the OH drive.  Tyler Snavely made the Chargers pay, running 45 yards down to the 8 yard line where, after switching ends at the quarter break, Nick Rude went in from 1 yard out.  Kolste ran in a 2-point conversion to make it 14-0 just 5 seconds into the 2nd quarter.

After trading possessions, the Wildcats had the ball with under a minute to go.  Rude broke loose for a 41-yard scamper down to the 9 yard line, then Valencia scored from 4 yards out with 17 seconds left to increase the Wildcat lead to 20-0.

Getchell punted their first possession of the 2nd half, but got the ball right back as the 2nd handoff on a reverse play was dropped at the 19 and returned by Getchell to the 3.  Getchell had to run 4 plays (including two flags), but scored from a yard out with 7:00 to go in the 3rd.  OH still led 20-6.

MG scored once more with 11:10 to go in the 4th on a 2-yard run.

Oak Harbor's final score came on a 25-yard run up the middle by Dallas Brodt to make it 26-12.

The Chargers had a chance to score late, with a 1-10 on the OH 24.  The first play was a pass caught OOB, the second pass was batted away at the 3 by Snavely, and Tyler Dodd sacked the QB on 3rd down.  On 4th down, Getchell completed a nice screen pass over the middle, but Joseph Field was able to trip up the runner well short of the 1st down marker to make the final score 26-12.

The JV team is home again next week, taking on the Stanwood Spartans, who are currently tied for 2nd place in the Wesco 3A North with 2-1 league records.

Boys Tennis 2014-10-13

If you ever had the desire to see what tennis played outdoors in 50mph wind gusts was like, you should have been at Oak Harbor High School Monday afternoon as the varsity Wildcat netters held their final home match of the season, facing off against Pilchuck.

The match started early due to the impending threat of rain, but while cloudy and windy, the rain held off long enough to get a complete match.

And what a match it was!  Oak Harbor swept the visiting Tommies 7-0, and coupled with an Arlington loss put OH in sole possession of 3rd place with one match to go.

Jackson Wezeman at 1st singles barely broke a sweat, swatting his opponent 6-1, 6-1.  Carter Saar went 3 sets at 2nd doubles, but win 6-7(3), 6-2, 6-1.  Tom Dale won his first set 6-1, allowed his opponent to take a 3-0 lead in the 2nd, but closed out the match with a 6-0 run.  Ray Paraiso won at 4th singles 6-1, 6-0.

The doubles matches were just as lopsided.  The closest was at 1st double, with Kyle Martin and Jared Alano-Gray winning 6-3, 7-5.  Alexander Smith and Jared Hunt at 2nd won 6-2, 6-0 and Matthew Hallahan and Calib Byers at 3rd won 6-2, 6-3.

Nathan Magdalera and Max Van Dam played an exhibition doubles match and won 8-0, 8-3 while Jhon Dimaculangan and Joseph Cortes won 8-6.

Pilchuck does not field a JV team.

The final regular season match of the year will be away at 2nd place Everett while the JV plays at home on Wednesday.  The current forecast calls for rain all day, so check before you go to the match.

Youth Soccer 2014-10-11

The old saying in Western Washington is "if you don't like the weather, just wait a few minutes".

Never was that more true than this past Saturday at Ft. Nugent Park.

The 9am games were played under grey skies with a sprinkle or two.  In the 10am games, the first half was played under a pouring rain, but the second half under bright sun.

To top it all off, there were some flashes of lightning visible, so all remaining games were canceled for the day.

As a result, our photographer was able to shoot only two U-10 games instead of the expected 4 games.

Middle School Cross Country 2014-10-08 at City Beach

The first of two home meets for the OHMS/NWMS Wildcat United (WU) combined Cross Country team was last Wednesday at City Beach Park over a 1.5 mile course.  Other team competing were Conway, Mt. Vernon and Cascade.

We apologize in advance for any spelling mistakes in the names.  They are all handwritten results.

The only Wildcat United race winner that day was Jenny Danielson, who won the 7th grade girls race in 9:21.  Conway picked up the 2nd place spot at 9:33, then it was a stream of Wildcats in 3rd through 7th place - Cat Wicker, Addy Day, Gracie Upchurch, Chanette Sheld and Leielle Salinger.

Rounding out the top 10 for WU were Patti Meissner and Haley Riffel.

Other 7th grade finishers were Frances Empinado, Kyra Pitts, Natalie Plush, Schelby Heston, Abigail Payne, Malena Hannaham, Marissa Barber, Sarah Mensah, Natalie Halverson and Ashley Berry.

For the 7th grade boys, L. Impassett was the first WU runner, finishing in 4th overall with a time of 9:30.  Right behind him were Shamus Warden and Payton Horn in 5th and 6th.

Rounding out the 7th grade boys were John Shelor, Trenton Fisher, Hayden Musle, Mason Fields, Jonathan Rochey, Ridgely Briddell, Luke Turner, David Harrington, Zach Bertram and Andrew Lof.

The top WU 8th grade girl was Natalie Hahn, overall in 4th place in a time of 11:18.  Also in the top 10 were Maggie Jappert, Hally Parker, and Bri Gagum.

Other 8th grade girls were Asiah Erickson, Emily Petty, Amy Diamond, Stephany Flores and Lexi Peters.

Finally, the 8th grade boys.  Dylan Rydell was 2nd overall in 8:55.  Blake Servatius was 5th and Ben Knoll 6th to round out the top 10.

Other 8th grade boys in the field of 42 were Dawson Seabolt, Destin Mansikka, Ethan Lang, Logan Ince, Caleb Hunter, Jared Johnston, Pablo Closson, Carl Davis, Derek Gilbert, Liam Gore and Ansel Schwarz.

FB 2014-10-10 Varsity at Getchell

Dejon Devroe can not be stopped by mortal man.

The Oak Harbor High School football sensation proved that again Friday, Oct. 10, busting out a four-touchdown performance -- in which every scoring run was 47 yards or longer -- to lead the Wildcats to a 47-25 shredding of host Marysville-Getchell.

The victory lifted the 'Cats to 4-1 overall, 3-0 in 3A Wesco play.

It also keeps them on a collision course with fellow undefeated heavyweight Marysville-Pilchuck. The two squads clash Oct. 24 and it's
shaping up to be a battle for a league title for a third straight season.

Facing the less-fearsome Marysville squad, Oak Harbor let the Chargers hang around for a bit.

Getchell actually got on the board first, booting a 30-yard field goal after they recovered the ball when Oak Harbor fumbled a punt return.

Marysville would hold the lead one more time (at 9-6 with five and a half minutes left in the first) and stayed close for much of the first half, trailing just 26-18 with under a minute in the first half.

Enter reality.

Using just 22 seconds, Oak Harbor strolled to a game-breaking touchdown, with Princeton Lollar crashing in from 18 yards out.

That capped a remarkable two-minute stretch in which the two teams combined for 24 points.

Marysville scored on a one-yard run (the kick failed) and a 38-yard field goal, while Oak Harbor countered with an 81-yard sprint to the promised land by Zach Jones (kick failed) and Lollar's TD.

Stunned by Oak Harbor's quick strike at the end of the half, Marysville wasn't the same team in the second half, and the Wildcats tacked on a pair of touchdowns to pad the lead to 47-18.

Getchell finally stopped the bleeding with a 60-yard scoring pass-and-catch in the final three minutes, but any hopes of a comeback were long dead by that time.

Lollar scored twice on short runs (two and one-yard dashes) and Jones hit on his huge run, but most of the night it was the Devroe Show.

The 5-foot-10, 150-pound whirlwind of a senior bolted for scoring runs of 51, 47, 67 and 47, racking up 212 yards alone on just those four carries.

He has broken 119 yards or more in all five of Oak Harbor's games this season.

Boys Tennis update 2014-10-12

With only two matches left in the season, the Wildcats are positioned well, currently tied for 3rd in the Wesco 3A North with Arlington.  Both teams are 4-4 in league play and split their regular season matches.

Oak Harbor has matches remaining, Monday at home against Pilchuck and Wednesday at Everett.  Pilchuck is winless in league play while Everett is 7-1 and tied for first place with Stanwood.  Arlington's remaining matches are against Everett, and Getchell, who has only two wins, both over rival Pilchuck.

On the JV side, the boys are in 4th place with a 2-5 league record and have only one match remaining, against Everett.  MP does not field a JV team.

The JV squad was shut out by Arlington on 10/9 then again on 10/9 by Stanwood.

On the varsity side, Carter Saar at 2nd doubles got the only victory against a strong Everett squad, winning 6-3, 6-2 on September 30th.

On Oct 2nd the team traveled to Getchell and left with a 5-2 win, with all OH victories coming in straight sets, and the two losses in 3.  Winners in singles were Saar, Tom Dale and Raymond Paraiso.  At doubles it was Jared Hunt/Alexander Smith and Matthew Hallahan/Caleb Byers with the wins.  In exhibitions matches both OH doubles teams won, Max Van Dam/Nathan Magdalera and Josep Cortez/Jhon Dimaculangan.

At home on October 7th, the varsity squad played a close one with Arlington, pulling out a 4-3 victory.  Oak Harbor won 3 singles matches (Jackson Wezeman, Saar and Paraiso) and captured one doubles match for the team victory (Hunt/Smith in 3 sets - 6-7(4), 6-3, 6-3).

In their most recent match, the boys were at Stanwood and were swept in straight sets in all matches.

FB 2014-10-09 - Freshmen vs Arlington

Thursday's freshman game against Arlington was your average football game, nothing really special.  Until the last minute.

Arlington got on the board first with a 71-yard pass play at the 8:36 mark in the 1st quarter, then added a 2-point conversion to take an 8-0 lead.

Oak Harbor tied the game late in the 2nd when Mac Carr broke loose for a 50-yard sprint, capped with a run by Mac Nuanez for the 2-point conversion.

OH took the lead 14-8 with 5:59 left in the 3rd, when Carr danced into the end zone on a 4th and Goal play. The run conversion failed.

With 0:41 left in the 3rd, Arlington scored from 16 yards out and completed a pass conversion attempt to take a 16-14 lead.

The two teams battled back and forth until late.  Arlington downed a punt inside the Wildcat 1 with about a minute to play in the game.  Oak Harbor drove to the Arlington 22 when disaster struck.  With only 45.9 seconds left in the game, Oak Harbor fumbled the snap and Arlington recovered.

Things looked bleak for the Wildcats, but Arlington, instead of just taking a knee and ending the game, tried to run a play.  The Eagles fumbled the handoff and Thomas Lawless recovered at the Eagle 10.  Then to add insult to injury, the refs hit Arlington with an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, moving the ball to the 5.

Carr took the handoff and scored on the first play.  The 2-point run failed, but Oak Harbor led 20-16 with just 35 seconds to go.

Another misfortune hit the 'Cats on the kickoff.  The kick was fielded at the 25, then Arlington executed a picture-perfect reverse and returned the ball all the way to the Oak Harbor 9.  Two plays later, Arlington regained the lead 22-20, now with just 9 seconds left.

After Arlington kicked the ball OOB twice, Oak Harbor finally fielded the kickoff at the OH 30, returning to the 40.  With just 2.2 seconds left, Coach Marshall called for the halfback pass.  QB Chris Trisler threw to a wide open TJ Passmore on the near sideline, who then threw across the field, back to Trisler.  Trisler had room to run for a while, but Arlington was able to bring him down at their own 32, leaving Oak Harbor with a 22-20 loss.

XC 2014-10-02

They knew the course. They dominated the course.

Running in their only home cross country meet of the season Thursday, Oct. 2, the Wildcat harriers blitzed everyone foolish enough to step up to the starting line with them.

Capturing wins in all three divisions (boys' varsity, girls' varsity and boys' JV), Oak Harbor dominated the afternoon, with Mountlake Terrace, Everett and Stanwood left to find solace where they could.

'Cat senior Jonalynn Horn strolled home with the win in her race, covering the 4,627-meter course in 17 minutes, 40 seconds. That put her almost a full minute-and-a-half ahead of her nearest rival.

On the boys side, Oak Harbor senior John Rodeheffer wasn't quite as dominant, but just as effective. His time of 15:12 was only four seconds shy of being a full minute faster than the #2 finisher, 'Cat senior Sebastian Ceasar (16:08).

Tyler Grehan had the closest win of the day, winning the boys' JV race by a slim three seconds.

The Oak Harbor freshman (17:50) edged out Everett junior Sean Underhill (17:53) to capture the title.

FB 2014-10-03 vs Arlington - Homecoming!

Dejon Devroe got Homecoming started off with a bang.

The Oak Harbor High School star blasted through Arlington's defense Friday, Oct. 3, tearing up his home turf for 145 yards and a pair of touchdown runs. By the time he was done, the Wildcats had a tidy 41-27 win and were ready to move on to the dance.

Devroe put up on some nifty moves, scoring on a six-yard run to open the scoring, then tacking on a game-busting 77-yard sprint to the end zone shortly after the teams returned from the locker rooms at halftime.

Oak Harbor put the game away fairly early, bolting out to a 27-14 lead at the half.

After Devroe's opener, Quinn Karney plunged in from the two-yard line to stretch the lead to 13-0 (the PAT was blocked).

The 'Cats tacked on a 21-yard touchdown toss from Clay Doughty to Dyllan Harris, before beating the clock to punch in a touchdown on a run by Princeton Lollar with a single second left on the first-half clock.

Any hopes of a second-half comeback for Arlington were promptly squashed as Oak Harbor scored on its first two possessions after the break.

Devroe went ballistic, then ripped off another 23-yard stroll through the defense to set up a second TD pass from Doughty to Harris. This one went 10 yards.

Arlington made the final score look a little more reasonable with a pair of touchdowns in garbage time.

The Eagles packaged a nine-yard TD run and an 11-yard TD pass around Oak Harbor's first, and only, punt of the game, which didn't come until the 3:10 mark of the fourth quarter.

The win, which lifted Oak Harbor to 3-1 overall, 2-0 in the 3A Wesco, was a well-played affair on both sides of the ball for the 'Cats.
 

While the offense was clicking all night long, the defense had its moments as well.

First on the spotlight was Savion Passmore, who recovered two fumbles.

Girls Soccer 2014-10-01 vs Pilchuck

It's been and odd year for the varsity girls soccer team.  They've beat up on all their non-league opponents and are 4-0 in non-league play.  However, they have yet to win a league game.  They are 0-3-2, with the ties coming against the two Marysville teams - Getchell and Pilchuck.  The three losses were against Arlington, Stanwood and Edmonds-Woodway, who are a combined 16-4-1 on the season.

In last night's game against Pilchuck, the visiting Tomahawks scored quickly, finding the goal just over 2 minutes into the game.  Mary Johnston tied the game early in the 2nd with a goal of her own, but that was it for scoring.  Neither team could get the "Golden Goal" in the overtime period.

There was more scoring in the JV game, with a penalty kick with 8 minutes left proving to be the difference.   Pilchuck scored first, but just 4 minutes later Jenna Cooley forced a shot into the goal to tie the game at 1.  Early in the 2nd half, Oak Harbor took a 2-1 lead on a goal by Gillian Crossley, but a MP goal at the 9:46 mark tied it once again.  Oak Harbor was called for a foul in the box, setting up a penalty kick.  The MP shot went into the back corner of the net to make it 3-2.  OH worked hard in the remaining 8 minutes, but could not get the ball past the Tommie keeper.

With the loss, the JV team is now 1-4 in league play, 3-5-1 overall.

The girls have seven matches left on the schedule, with only 3 at home.  They travel to winless Meadowdale next Thursday, then host Shorecrest on the 16th, Glacier Peal on the 21st and Lynnwood on the 27th.

VB 2014-09-30 vs Meadowdale

Tuesday was a mixed day for the three Oak Harbor volleyball teams as they hosted Meadowdale.  One group lost all three games, one was victorious in all 3, and one split.

The split team was the JV.  After some sloppy play early in the 1st game and finding themselves down by a lot, the girls dug in, grabbed the lead and won the game 25-19.  The second game was much closer, but OH pulled out a 28-26 win.  Game 3 went to the visiting Mavericks 25-19.  The JV girls are in a 3-way tie for 2nd place at 3-1 in league and 5-1 overall.

In the dome, the freshman team didn't do so well, falling 25-18, 25-8, 25-14.  To be fair, this was a Meadowdale squad that is undefeated in league play and 4-2 overall, while Oak Harbor is 0-3, 2-4.

The varsity squad picked up their 3rd sweep of the young season, beating the Mavs 25-13, 25-11, 25-19.  Oak Harbor is now 3-1 in league play and tied for 3rd with Shorewood and Pilchuck.  Meadowdale, traditionally a strong WESCO volleyball squad, lost a lot of experience to graduation, and after finishing in 1st place last year is now winless on the year.

After a road trip to Glacier Peak on Oct 2nd, the girls return home on Oct 7th to face Stanwood.  They won't play at home after that until October 21st against Getchell, then have their final home match of the season on October 27th against Mountlake Terrace.
