Girls Swim 2015-09-17 @ Everett

In a dual meet Thursday afternoon in Everett, the Wildcats won 9 of the 12 events to swim past the host Seagulls 116-70.

Taliah Black won the 200IM and 100 breast and was a member of the winning 200 free and 200 medley relay teams.

Marissa Morris won the 200 free and 100 back, and was on the winning 200 and 400 free relay teams.

Other individual event winners were Jillian Pape (50 free), Anna Kate Fahey (100 free).

The girls are at home next Monday, September 21st, hosting Stanwood in a dual meet at Vanderzicht Pool, with a 5:30 scheduled start time.

Cross Country 2015-09-17 at Jackson

Finally, the Wildcat Cross Country team got into action, with a trip down south to Jackson HS to take on the host, plus 4A schools Cascade and Kamiak.

For the boys, the Wildcats tallied 77 points to finish 3rd.  Jackson won with 29, Kamiak 2nd with 48 and Cascade 4th with 80.

Miguel Guzman was first among the Wildcats, finishing in 13:44, 9th overall.  Tyler Grehan, Michael Lym, Caleb Peek and Ben Gasper were also in the race and earned points for the Wildcats.

On the girls' side, Kamiak won the meet with 23 points.  Oak Harbor was 2nd with 44,  Jackson 3rd with 59 and Cascade 4th with 102.

The top 3 OH finishers finished 5th, 6th and 7th in the race (Alexis Smith, Tamia Rios and Carolynn Wicker).  Emma Lerch and Olivia Flack also earned points for the 'Cats.

JV results are not available.

The teams travel next to Mt. Vernon on Sept 24th for a tri met against Mt. Vernon and Stanwood at Skagit Valley College.

Girls Soccer 2015-09-17 at Stanwood

In what was a busy day for Wildcat sports, the girls soccer team traveled to Stanwood, with the JV team picking up a 4-1 victory but the Varsity getting shut out 3-0.

It was the first league loss for the 'Cats, who travel to 0-3 Getchell next Tuesday, the 22nd, then return home to face Edmonds-Woodway on Thursday the 24th.

Boys Tennis 2015-09-17 vs Arlington

The scheduled JV match at Arlington was postponed to a future date.

At home, the varsity team lost a close 4-3 match to the visiting Eagles, capturing 3 of the 4 singles matches, but none of the doubles.

Winning for the Wildcats were:

1st singles Jackson Wezeman, 6-2, 6-2
3rd singles Rodrigo Columbo, 6-1, 7-5
4th singles Calib Byers, 6-1, 6-0

The 1st doubles team of Jared Hunt and Matthew Hallahan went to 3 sets before falling 2-6, 7-5, 2-6.

In an exhibition match, Nathanael Thompson and Trenton Cone teamed up to win 8-3.

Friday is the 2nd match against Getchell this week, with JV at home and Varsity on the road.  Matches start at 3:30pm and are free to all.

FB 2015-09-17 - Freshmen at Sedro-Woolley

Instead of the originally scheduled freshman football game, which was to be at home against Ferndale on Wednesday, the Oak Harbor boys had to travel to Sedro-Woolley for a mini-jamboree against Sedro and Ferndale, playing a half against each team.

Oak Harbor won the first, against Sedro, 6-0, but dominated the game on both sides of the ball for most of the 20 minutes of play.

The second game, against Ferndale, was 6-0 in favor of the Golden Eagles.

Next week, instead of the originally scheduled Bye, the freshman team will not travel to Stanwood with a special 4pm kickoff time.

Boys Tennis 2015-09-16 vs Getchell

On Wednesday the 16th, the varsity Boys Tennis team traveled to Getchell while the JV team hosted the Chargers.

At the OH courts, Getchell won the team scoring 5-2, but with 2 of the losing matches going into tiebreakers, it could have gone either way.

Winning for Oak Harbor were 2nd singles Nathanael Thompson (6-3, 6-1) and 3rd singles Trenton Cone (6-4, 3-6, 10-8)

Going to a 3rd set were 1st singles Rheeno Kwak in a marathon match (6-3, 6-7(3-7), 12-10), 4th singles Clifford Hartley (7-5, 2-6, 10-6), and 1st doubles Luke Martin and Matt Kolden (3-6, 6-2, 10-4)

Down in Marysville, the varsity squad came away with their 2nd 4-3 win of the young season.

Oak Harbor won all four of the singles matches (Jackson Wezeman 6-0, 6-0, Ray Paraiso 6-1, 6-3, Rodrigo Columbo 6-0, 6-0 and Calib Byers 6-1, 6-1), but lost all 3 doubles matches.

Thursday, 9/17 the varsity is at home against Arlington and Friday back to Getchell again, with JV in the opposite location (away Thursday, home Friday)

Girls Swim 2015-09-15 vs Snohomish & GP

The Girls Swim season started with a long trip down to the brand-new Snohomish Aquatic Center to take on the Panthers of Snohomish and Grizzlies of Glacier Peak, and came away with a split.

In team scoring, the Wildcats crushed Snohomish 105-73, but fell to Glacier Peak 98-84.

More importantly were the district meet qualifying times posted by 6 of the Oak Harbor swimmers, and in a variety of events.

In the 100 backstroke, 3 girls qualified - Marissa Morris, Erica Sugatan and Baelee Whitinger.  Sugatan also qualified in the 200 IM and Morris in the 200 free.

Other 2-event qualifiers were Taliah Black (200IM and 100 breast) and Jillian Pape (50 free adn 100 fly.  Sophie Dickinson qualified in the 500 free.

Next for the Wildcat girls is a trip to Everett for a dual meet against the Seagulls.

The first home meet is Monday, September 21st against Stanwood, followed a week later with another home meet on Sep 28th against both Marysville schools.

Girls Soccer 2015-09-15 vs Lynnwood

There was mixed success for the Oak Harbor girls soccer teams Tuesday night as the Wildcats took on Lynnwood High School at Wildcat Memorial Stadium.

In the JV opener, the two teams fought to a 0-0 tie, with a number of great saves by the OH keeper.

In varsity action, the score was 0-0 at halftime, but, due to an injury, the Royals had to play most of the game a man down, and the Wildcat speed wore down the visitors, resulting in a 2-0 win by Oak Harbor.  The first goal was by Lydia Peplinski with an assist to Cailey Etherington.  The second goal was by Malia Hansen with the assist to Peplinski.

The girls play the next to matches away, at Stanwood and at Getchell, before returning home on Sep 24th to play Edmonds-Woodway.

Boys Tennis 2015-09-14 vs Glacier Peak

Monday was not a good day for Oak Harbor tennis as both the varsity and JV teams fell to Glacier Peak 7-0.

Glacier Peak has a strong tennis team and has enjoyed a lot of success since the school was first built.

All the varsity matches ended in straight-set losses.

There are still 3 matches remaining this week, with two of them against Getchell.

The varsity team travels to Marysville on Wednesday, then hosts Arlington on Thursday and Getchell on Friday.  The JV squad will be at the opposite location.

Youth football 2015-09-12

It was a good week for the Oak Harbor Football and Cheer League last Saturday, with 5 of 7 teams winning their games, included a 3-game sweep on home turf.

On the road at Sedro-Woolley White, the Gold PeeWees won 26-8, and the Junior Gold team walloped Arlington 42-0.

The Purple Juniors fell to Sedro White 31-7 and Senior team lost to Friday Harbor 33-7.

At home, the Midget Purple team built a 19-0 first-quarter lead before cruising to a 40-7 win over Mt. Vernon Black.

At noon, the Midget Gold team was up 14-0 on Anacortes White after running just a single offensive play and using a minute of game time, and the team rolled to a 50-12 win.

The 2pm game featured the PeeWee Purple team vs Anacortes.  The Seahawks scored first and converted a 2-point PAT while OH scored but did not convert.  In a close game, the Wildcats held on for a 20-18 win.

Next Saturday there will be 5 home games with just the two PeeWee teams on the road.

First game at 9am - Junior Gold vs Lakewood Maroon.

FB 2015-09-11 vs Ferndale

They got their bite back.

A week after being knocked around, a resurgent Oak Harbor High School football squad roared back to life, upending a ranked team on its home field.

Despite playing without seven key players, the fired-up Wildcats rolled up 368 yards of offense en route to a 31-28 upset of Ferndale Friday, Sept. 11.

The Golden Eagles, who won their opener in overtime, entered the game ranked 10th in the state in the latest 3A polls.

Now 1-1 on the young season, Oak Harbor will enjoy a rare week off, which should enable most of its dinged-up stars to get healthy in time for the Wesco North opener.

That game is Sept. 25 in Oak Harbor (7 PM kickoff) and undefeated Everett (2-0) is the next upset victim on the menu.

Coming off of a 55-6 loss on opening night, the 'Cats were looking for a spark and Savion Passmore delivered.

The only one of Oak Harbor's top five running backs in uniform, he ripped through the Ferndale defense (or lack of one) for 146 yards on 15 carries.

He had help, as well, with all-league wide receiver Dyllan Harris sliding into the backfield, where he posted 101 yards on 12 carries. Quinn Karney provided the third prong in a three-prong attack, rumbling for 45 yards on 14 carries.

With a crisp 302 yards on the ground, Oak Harbor didn't need much from its quarterbacks, but what the Wildcats did get was efficiency.

Taylor Kolste and Tyler Snavely combined to complete six of 12 passes for 66 yards, with Harris hauling in just about everything. He finished with five snags for 59 yards.

While the Wildcat defense didn't force a punt, it did bring the Golden Eagles to a crashing halt three times, forced the ball to be turned over with a fourth-down stop.

Toss in a relatively cleanly-played game (only two penalties) and much-improved special teams play (which included a 23-yard field goal off of the toe of Eric Jensen) and Oak Harbor was all about the precision.

The 'Cats spread out their touchdowns, getting scores from Mac Nuanez (one-yard run), Passmore (57-yard run) and Harris (13-yard run and one-yard run).

FB 2015-09-09 - Freshmen at Monroe

It was the closest of the 3 football games against Monroe this first week of the season, but the freshman team fell to the host Bearcats 27-20 last Wednesday at Monroe HS.

Monroe got on the board first with a long play, just 50 seconds into the game.

Oak Harbor responded with a pick-six at 7:38 in the 2nd, but the PAT failed, leaving the score at 7-6 for Monroe.

OH then took the lead with just under 3 minutes left in the half and converted the 2-point PAT to make the score 14-7 at halftime.

The 3rd quarter was back and forth but with just 5 seconds left in the quarter, Monroe was able to tie the game at 14, then due to a muffed kickoff, took a 20-14 lead at the horn.

With exactly 5 minutes left in the game, the Wildcats got on the board again to tied the score at 20, but with 3:18 left in the game the Bearcats scored once more, then held out to end the game with a 27-20 win.

Next week the Freshman team was supposed to host Ferndale, but now it looks like they'll travel to Sedro-Woolley to play a half against the Cubs and a half against Ferndale.  More details later as they are firmed up.

Boys Tennis 2015-09-10 vs Mv Vernon

The OHHS boys tennis teams got off to a good start Thursday with a pair of wins against Mt. Vernon.

In varsity action, the Wildcats swept singles play, with Jackson Wezeman shutting out his opponent 6-0, 6-0 at 1st singles.  Ray Paraiso at 2nd singles win 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, Rodrigo Columbo won at 3rd singles 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 and Calib Byers won 6-0, 6-1 at 4th singles.

In doubles, however, it was all Bulldogs as OH lost all 3 matches, but the match win went to Oak Harbor 4-3.

At Mt. Vernon, the JV team also notched a win, 5-2, with all four singles players getting wins: Nathanel Thompson, Trent Cone, Clifford Hartley and Luke Martin.  Also winning was the #2 doubles team of Jacob Schermerhorn and Jordan George.

The next match is next Monday, the 14th, with varsity at home and JV on the road at Glacier Peak.

FB 2015-09-07 JV vs Monroe

Another night, another big loss to 4A Monroe, this time the JV team on Monday night.

Monroe rolled to a 34-0 lead, including a pick-six and a kick return before Oak Harbor was able to score with 10:59 left in the game.

The final was 41-7 in favor of Monroe.  The Wescoathletics site says 46-7, but the scoreboard read

Next Monday the JV Squad travels to Ferndale for an early 4pm game.

FB 2015-09-04 - Varsity at Monroe

Can they get a do-over?

Opening night was rougher than expected for a young Oak Harbor High School football squad, as it hit the road Friday and took a 55-6 thrashing at Monroe.


Not only were the Wildcats bruised on the scoreboard, but on the turf as well, as top rusher Princeton Lollar limped to the sideline early in the second quarter.


Before he went Lollar rambled for 59 yards on nine carries, teaming with Jordan Washintgon (7-51) and Savion Passmore (8-32) for most of Oak Harbor's offense.

'Cat quarterbacks Taylor Kolste and Tyler Snavely combined for just two completions and 10 yards through the air.

Monroe came out on fire and never cooled off, scoring on the first play of three separate drives. The Bearcats rolled up nearly 400 yards of offense, while forcing three Oak Harbor fumbles and blocking two kicks.

The Wildcats lone score came in the second quarter, and was set up by two nice runs from Lollar right before his injury.

Riding bursts of 15 and 12 yards from Lollar and an 18-yard zag from Washington, Oak Harbor finally moved down field at a consistent pace. Passmore then capped the drive with a 26-yard dash to the end zone.

Monroe blocked the extra point, however, holding on to a 21-6 lead, and things went quickly downhill from there for the Wildcats.

Oak Harbor managed just a single first down in the second half, coming courtesy a 16-yard run by Mackenzie Nuanez in the fourth quarter.

Youth Football 2015-08-29

It wasn't a really good weekend for Oak Harbor Youth Fooball, as only 3 of the seven teams won their games, and only one of the teams playing at home.

On the road, it was PeeWee Purple 32, MV Green 0, Midget Gold 18, MV Green 20, Junior Purple 6, MV Green 12 and Junior Gold 26, Bellingham TD 12.

At home, strong winds played havoc with the passing and kicking games.

The Midget Purple team was the sole home winner, beating Friday Harbor 25-0.  The Gold PeeWees lost 20-6 to Lakewood and the Seniors 27-0 to Sedro-Woolley.

Youth Football - 2015-08-22

The first week is in the books, and overall, OH teams did well.

Both Junior teams were on the road, with the Purple squad falling to Granite Falls 14-6 at 11am.

The Gold squad went to Sedro Woolley, and battled not only the Blue team, but also smoke from the fires when the wind shifted halfway through the game.  In the end, OH was victorious, winning 38-6.

At home, the day started with the Gold PeeWee team demolishing South Whidbey 35-6.

Next up was the Senior squad, facing off against a select Bellingham team, and although there were flashes of greatness, the Wildcats fell 39-12.

The 1pm game was the Purple PeeWees vs Sedro Blue.  This game was close throughout, and a strong defensive stand near the end of the game preserved a 20-15 win.

At 3pm the Midget Purple team played Sedro White, and the Wildcats just could not get anything going.  The game was delayed for about a half-hour, as a Wildcat was injured on a kickoff, was complaining of neck pain, and an ambulance was called.  He got a round of applause as he was loaded into the ambulance and waved to his teammates.  Reports say he'll be fine, medical was called as a precaution.  By the time the game ended at nearly 5:45, Sedro had a commanding 41-18 lead.

For the nightcap it was the Gold Midgets vs Sedro Blue, with the Wildcats winning convincingly, 37-13.

Youth football 2015-08-15

The 2015 sports seasons kicked off last Saturday with the annual youth football Jamboree at Burlington High School.

Oak Harbor is fielding 7 teams this year, 2 each of PeeWee, Midget and Juniors, and one Senior team.

On Saturday, the Juniors and Seniors played in the morning session, with each team playing four 25-minute scrimmages against other teams from the North Cascade Youth Football League.

In the afternoon it was the Midgets and PeeWees, with the final scrimmage wrapping up shortly after 6pm.

Challenger Baseball - OH Mariners vs Mill Creek Royals

For the first time, the North Whidbey Little League is sponsoring a Challenger team.  Challenger teams are made up of special needs children and play with rules similar to T-Ball

Sunday afternoon, the Mill Creek Royals traveled to City Beach for a game against the Oak Harbor Mariners.

If you weren't there, you missed one of the most wonderful things ever.  Both the players and parents had an obviously good time, with loud cheers from both sidelines for any good plays.
