Youth football gets underway

The Oak Harbor Youth Football League got their 2009 season underway Saturday at Ft. Nugent Park with the annual agility camp.

The well-attended camp consisted of 3 hours of a variety of football drills, followed by a hotdog BBQ.

This year the OHYFL will field a total of 7 teams. Two each in the Peewee, Midget and Junior divisions, and one in the Senior division. As of now, the two highest levels are full and wait lists are being formed.

There is still room at the Midget and Peewee levels, especially Peewee.

GBB youth camp @ NWMS

The OHHS Girls Basketball team held their annual 3-day camp for young girls, this year at North Whidbey Middle School due to the construction at the high school.

Coach McLeod had a lot of his JV and Varsity players helping out, and the girls, both campers and players, seemed to be enjoying themselves.

Senior events

Graduation is Monday already, so senior events have been in full swing, with the senior tea, paper toss, awards, parties, and the upcoming baccalaureate and graduation ceremony, then the Grad Night Party.

Contratulations to all the Wildcats that made the list

On a final promising note, of all the athletes listed on first or second team, only 5 are seniors, and several are sophomores.

Youth Soccer 5-30 @ Ft. Nugent Park

Just one more week left in the spring soccer season, but there was no letup in effort on the field.

There were some close games and some not so close games, but all the kids seemed to be having fun in the sun.

The BU-8 Silver Surfers beat the Green Rattlesnakes 8-5, and over 100 photos from the game can be found HERE.

The GU-10 Blue Lightning, sponsored by P&L General Contractors beat the Blue Monkeys, sponsored by the Oak Harbor Soroptimist International 8-1, with 70 photos posted HERE.

A very close game was the Green Goalbusters and the Blue Sonics. It was back and forth for the full hour, but the Goalbusters were able to pull off a 2-1 victory. 100 photos can be found HERE.

Finally, the Blue Knights went up against the Green Extreme Slyjaws from Anacortes and played to a 2-2 tie. 73 images are HERE.

Track - State Meet

Shantae Young and Allison Duvenez were the two OHHS representatives to the state track meet that finished Saturday.

Allison qualified in the 300m hurdles and finished 15th overall with a time of 47.64

Shantae competed in 3 events. She ran a 12.8 in the 100m dash prelims but finished 15th and did not move on to the finals.

In the field events she did well, finishing 8th in the long jump at 16-11.5 and 7th in the triple jump at 36-3.

Allison is a sophomore this year and Shantae is a junior, so both women will be back next year.

Golf - State tournament

OHHS sent a total of 3 golfers to the State tournament this year, two boys and a girl.

Senior Phil Reedy made the cut in the first round, and going into the finals was tied for 2nd place.

He finished the tournament in 6th place.

Sophomore Judd Ford shot an 88 on the first day and did not make the cut.

Junior Ashley Johnson shot a 93 on the first day and also did not make the final cut.

Both Johnson and Ford intend to play again next year for OHHS and both plan to return to the state tournament.

Track 5-22 - District 1 championships

Two girls from Oak Harbor High School are headed to the state track meet next weekend at Mt. Tahoma High School.

Junior Shantae Young is the District 1 champion in the long and triple jumps, and will also be running in the 100m dash (she was 2nd at Districts).

Going with Shantae is sophomore Allison Duvenez who finished 2nd in the 300m hurdles.

There were 10 other girls at the district meet who although are not going to state, still turned in great performances.

Freshman Christina Alexander made it to the finals of the 100m dash and finished in 8th place.

Sophomore Janessa Ramos finished 8th overall in the 200m dash.

Freshman Maura McKole ran the 400m dash, finishing 5th overall with a PR time of 1:02.92.

Sophomore Addy Royal was 4th overall in the 800m, followed by teammate Claire Trepanier in 12th and a PR 2:28.85.

The girls 4x100 relay team, composed of (according to www.athletic.net) McKole, Ramos, Alexander and Young finished 4th overall and the 4x200 relay, which featured the same girls, but with Hope Thompson in place of Young finished 6th overall.

In field events, sophomore Amanda Alvarado threw the shot 32-1.25, good enough for 12th place, and freshman Dominique Jackson (DJ) was in 14th with a throw of 31-4.

Senior Becky Freeman added nearly 3 feet to her previous best in the discus, finishing in 12th place with a toss of 88-3.

Senior Alicia Christianson finished in 8th place in the pole vault, clearing 8 feet for the first time this season.

Finally, senior Hope Thompson finished up her track career with a new personal best in the triple jump of 32-7.5 and 10th place in the district.

Moving to the boys results, Senior Stephen Lewis finished 6th overall in the 100m dash and 5th in the 200m dash.

Freshman Josiah Miller ran in the 200m prelims, but finished 17th overall and didn't move on to the finals.

Senior Josh Duhrkopf and sophomore Cody Klauer ran the 800 meters, but only Duhrkopf moved on to the finals. Even though he didn't make it to finals, Cody set a new PR with a time of 2:05.13. In the finals, Josh broke through the 2 minute barrier for the first time this season, finishing in 7th place with a PR 1:59.62.

The boys had 2 relay teams entered in the district meet. The 4x100 team finished 5th and the 4x400 team finished 8th.

Finally, OHHS had 4 athletes entered in the triple jump. They were led by senior Greg Goebel who set a new PR with a jump of 41-6.75, good enough for 7th place. Also jumping were freshman Michael Mack (12th), junior Rashaad Smith (15th), and junior Dillon Peterson (17th).

Track 5-20 District 1 meet, day one

Oak Harbor athletes competed in a total of 16 events at the first day of the District 1 track meet at Shoreline Stadium.

For the boys, the 4x100 relay team finished in 3rd place with a time of 44.13 and the 4x400 relay team was 8th in 3:36.12.

Individually, Stephen Lewis finished 6th overall in both the 100 and 200m dash while freshman Josiah Miller was 17th in the 200.

Josh Duhrkopf was 6th in the 800 and Cody Klauer was 10th, just 3 1/2 seconds behind Josh.

Dejon Pruitt didn't have a good day and was unable to clear the starting height.

The girls 4x100 relay finished 2nd in 50.78 and the 4x200 relay was 7th with a time of 1:50.51.

Individually, Shantae Young was crowned District 1 champ in the long jump with a distance of 17-6.25. Shantae was also 4th in the 100m dash, tying her personal best of 12.79.

There were two freshmen from the girls team at the district meet: Christina Alexander (8th in the 100m dash) and Maura McKole (5th in the 400m dash). Christina set a new PR in her race - 13.27.

Janessa Ramos, Adrianna Royal and Allison Duvenez represented the sophomore class, with Janessa 8th in the 200m dash, Addy 4th in the 800 and Allison 9th in the 100m hurdles and 2nd in the 300m hurdles.

Rounding out the girls events on day one were senior Claire Trepanier, finishing 12th in the 800 with a new PR (2:28.85), and senior Becky Freeman in the discus. She finished 12th overall, and added 3 feet to her previous best, tossing the disc 88-3.

The meet continues Friday at Shoreline Stadium.

Track 5-15 - WESCO League championships

The 2009 WESCO North track championships were held at OHHS on Wednesday and Friday, May 13^th and 15^th.

Friday saw finals in all the sprint races, along with a number of other events. When all was said and done, only one Wildcat was crowned league champion.

Junior Shantae Young won the 100m dash in convincing fashion, beating her opponent by over a tenth of a second. It was somewhat of an unusual race in that only 2 of the 8 runners were seniors. There were two sophomores and even a freshman in the race. Shantae’s time of 12.79 was a new personal best for her. She was equally dominant in the triple jump where she leaped 36-2.5, over a foot further than her nearest competitor. Shantae also finished 2^nd in the long jump.

For the boys, the top competitor was Stephen Lewis. He was fighting off some illness and finished 2^nd in the 100m and 3^rd in the 200, but will be moving on to the district meet.

Softball 5-14 vs Arlington

It was a nice, sunny day for the final softball game of the 2009 season at Hillcrest Elementary School in Oak Harbor, where the Wildcats faced off against the Arlington Eagles.

It was not a happy day in the JV dugout, as both Coach Show and Coach Roy will not be back next year. Show is retiring from the Navy and returning to Florida, and Coach Roy will be going to North Carolina.

Pitcher Emily Hunt pitched all 7 innings, recording 10 strikeouts. Kasie Brown was 2-4 at the plate with a double and 2 RBIs, but it wasn't enough as the Eagles won 6-4.

After his last game, coach Showalter said "I really expect the JV team of 2009 to compete for a lot of open spots on varsity next year". He also expects the team to finish in the upper half of WESCO next year. In closing, he wanted to say "thanks for all your support".

Before the varsity game, each of the 5 seniors were introduced along with their parents. Leaving the team are seniors Kim Mowbray, Kayla Ratliff, Lauren Miller, Kendra Wallace and Kaylee Meders. Coach Weikle said that the team "is going to miss their leadership".

Arlington won the game 7-1. Relief pitcher Whitney Osborn struck out 4 batters over 4 innings and held the Eagles to 2 runs during that time, but the Wildcats left 5 players stranded on base.

Sisters Kim and Nikki Mowbray were both 2-3 at the plate with Kim scoring the only run.

Track 5-13 - League meet prelims

Talk about nasty weather! It was cold, windy and rainy Wednesday afternoon for the 1st day of the WESCO North league meet at Oak Harbor High School. The weather was so bad that the pole vault competition was canceled for the day.

Not all events were held, as some were finals only and will be held on Friday.

Even with the poor weather, there were still some good performances.

Stephen Lewis was the only Wildcat to win an event in a tie. Lake Steven's Tyler Reside had an identical time, but Lewis is listed as first place. Stephen finished 2nd in the 100m dash by just .07 second, and coming from behind in the 4x100 relay, almost pulled out the victory, missing by one one hundredth of a second!

For the girls, Shantae Young finished 2nd in the 100 and long jump and Allison Duvenez finished 2nd in the 300m hurdles.

Addy Royal won her 800m heat and finished 3rd overall.

Girls Tennis 5-13 - WESCO North meet - update 5-16

At Arlington High School, the top 6 OHHS players were all in action. In this tournament, if you lost in the first round, you were eliminated.

Jen Jansen faced off against Cascade's Jessica Willmorth and won the first set 6-3. Jen lost the 2nd set 5-7, and in the 3rd couldn't get things going and fell 1-6.

#2 Erin Neilon beat Snohomish's #2 7-5, 6-0.

The #1 doubles team of Molly Deleon and Cady O'Dell lost their first set 3-6 and were up 3-1 in the 2nd when the match was called on account of rain.

On Day 2, (Thursday) Erin faced off against a REALLY good (like almost pro level!) exchange student from Germany (Antonia Liebenow) and fell 6-0, 6-2.

Deleon and O'Dell could not pull off the win, and the #2 doubles team of Laurin Rico and Valerie Loder lost their first match and were eliminated.

In Erin's 2nd match of the day she was in the consolation round, facing Marina Messerli of Stanwood. Erin dominated the match, winning 6-2, 6-0.

Erin went back on Friday, still fighting for a spot in the district tournament. Her first match was against the Snohomish #1 Natalie Kaltbrunner. Erin says "It was a tough match, but I won 7-6(12), 2-6, 7-5."

Having won her first match of the day, Erin went to play Cascade's Jessica Wilmorth for a 3rd place spot, but Wilmorth was too much for her and Erin finished the tournament in the #4 spot.

She'll play next on Wednesday at Jackson High School at 1pm, facing off against the WESCO South #1 singles player Eliane Baik of Kamiak.

The top 3 from the District tournament move on to State.

Boys Golf 5-13 - WESCO North championships

The boys golf team was at The Walter Hall Golf Course in Everett on a blustery and wet day for the league championships. As a team the boys finished in 6th place.

The top 3 OH golfers all finished within a stroke of each other. Phil Reedy scored a 79 while Judd Ford and Matt Fikse both had a 79. Brandon Kenworthy scored an 87 and Logan White 101.

Girls Golf 5-12 - WESCO North meet

While Everett won the WESCO North meet with a Stableford score of 254, Oak Harbor did well, scoring 205 points for 5th place.

Melanie Cone was the top Wildcat with a score of 48 over 18 holes. Also shooting in the 40s were Ashley Johnson (45), Simone Hamilton (43) and Shelbey Hamming (40). Mara Cortez shot a respectable 29, which beat 4 of the 5 Arlington golfers.

Track 5-6 - JV Championships @ Snohomish

A large group of JV athletes gathered at Snohomish stadium for the WESCO JV Championships. This meet combined the WESCO north and south, with 14 teams for the boys and 13 for the girls.

While the women's team didn't post any winners, there were a number of top-10 finishes.

Bri Peterson, Katelyn Schneider and Jesy Groebli finished 6-8-9 in the 100m dash and Schneider and Groebli were 6-9 in the 200.

The 400 featured a couple of prominent OHHS swimmers. Senior swimming teammates Carolyn Vasquez and KeriAnne Wright finished 6th and 12th with junior Katelyn Schneider splitting them in 7th place.

Senior Becky Freeman threw the discus 70-7 - good enough for 2nd place, and finished 3rd in the shot put. Wright also threw the discus, finishing in 8th.

The final top-10 finishers were Schneider and Mariah Koontz in the long jump. Katelyn was 5th and Mariah 10th.

The boys won 4 events. Jason Curles won the 100 and 200m dash, Dejon Pruitt the high jump and Josh Higbee the long jump. Higbee was also 2nd (by 0.1 seconds) in the 100 and 4th in the triple jump, and Pruitt was 10th in the long jump.

Kevin Richards did well in the hurdles, finishing 5th in the 300 and 6th in the 110.

The boys 4x100m relay finished 7th.

And finally, Dillon Peterson was 7th in the triple jump.
