GBB 2013-12-13 vs Stanwood

Last Friday the Wildcat girls basketball team took on the Stanwood Spartans at home with mixed results.

Starting in the dome, the freshmen dug themselves a big hole by going scoreless in the first quarter and scoring only twice in the second, spotting the visitors a 20-4 halftime lead.  In the second half the two teams played nearly even, but the Wildcats could not cut into the Spartans' lead and fell 42-24.  Lydia Peplinski had a great second half, scoring 10 of her 15 points in the 3rd period.  Kyanna Prosch finished with 4 points, Morgan Kenaly and Michaela Dasch 2 each and Aelizah Espirtu 1.

The JV game was all Oak Harbor from beginning to end.  The girls started out building an 8-0 lead and increased it to 16-2 late in the 1st quarter.  The teams played even in the 2nd quarter, but OH led 33-19 at halftime.  The 3rd period was fairly dull for the spectators.  While the Wildcat defense held Stanwood scoreless from the floor, the 'Cats scored only 4 points of their own, but led 37-20 going into the final quarter, which ended with Oak Harbor winning 49-33.  Bryn Langrock led the Wildcats with 14 pints, Janae Payne scored 9, Kiesha Watts 8, Rahsanna Graham (RG), Julie Jansen, Hannah Knoll and Resego (Rosie) Mooki 4 each and Kenna Prosch 2.

Stanwood's varsity team came into the OHHS gym with only one loss, a 3-point deficit to 4A Arlington, and the left the gym with one loss as the used a hot offense to beat the Wildcats 67-45.  Joanna Leete led the team with 22 points, Deja Bunch finished with 7, AnnaBelle Whitefoot 5, Liz Lym 4, Jinai Guzman and Hayley Lundstrom 3 each and Brook Peplinski 1.

MS Volleyball 2013-12-12 NWMS @ OHMS

The two Oak Harbor middle school volleyball teams met Thursday for their official league match.

In some years, it's NWMS with the experienced club player, sometime OHMS.  This year it's OHMS, especially the 8th grade team.

While the final scores weren't pretty, there was lots of action and fun times on the court for all four teams - 7th and 8th grade JV and Varsity.

They play one final fun match tonight at NWMS followed by a slide show and awards party.

BBB 2013-12-10 vs Snohomish

For the final game before starting play against league opponents, the Oak Harbor Wildcat boys basketball team hosted the Snohomish Panthers Tuesday evening.

In the dome, the Freshmen ended the first quarter with a 14-10 laed, but fell behind 37-24 at halftime.  Snohomish came out after the break and scored 26 points in the 3rd to lead 63-42.  The Wildcats outscored their opponent 21-12 in the final period, but the final score was Snohomish 77, Oak Harbor 63.  Jordan Davenport led the team with 18 points.  Also in double figures were Joshua Cote 15, JJ Mitchell 12 and Ty Baker 10.  Adam Nelson scored 4 and Princeton Lollar and James Lage scored 2 each.

The JV squad struggled offensively in the first period, with Diangelo McKinney's two points the only OH points in the period.  Defense was effective, holding Snohomish to 9 points.  McKinney added 9 more in the 2nd period, and at halftime it was OH 15, Snohomish 18.  The Panthers pulled away a bit in the 3rd, leading 38-28, but the Wildcat offense grew cold in the 4th and Snohomish won 58-35.  McKinney finished with 14 points to lead the team.  JJ Johnson dropped in a trio of 3-pointers for 9 points, Shane Huttula and Savion Hollins-Passmore scored 4 each, Sean Erskine 3 and Tanner Walker 1.

At the end of the first quarter of the varsity game, the Wildcats led 15-10, then took a 26-21 lead into the locker room at the half.  Snohomish made a run in the 3rd, but the Wildcats still led 42-37.  In the 4th, however, the Snohomish offense came alive.  The tied the game at 44, then took a lead late in the game, forcing the Wildcats to foul to stop the clock.  The Panthers were sharp from the line and left the OHHS gym with a 63-54 win.  Dyllan Harris paced the squad with 23 points.  Drew Washington scored 11, Zach Gibbs 9, Zach Jones 5, Gabe Groenig 4 and Jacob Sturdevant 2.

The boys travel to Stanwood this Thursday to start league play, then return home on Tuesday the 17th against Everett and Friday the 20th against Ferndale.

GBB 2013-12-16 vs Mt. Baker

Friday evening the Oak Harbor girls basketball team was at OHHS for their home opener, against Mt. Baker HS from near Bellingham.  There was only a JV and Varsity game as Mt. Baker does not field a "C" team.

The Wildcat JV team was perfect on defense in the first quarter, holding the visitors scoreless while the offense put up 8 points, and by halftime Mt. Baker had scored only 3 points.

Mt. Baker improved their offense in the 3rd quarter, but so did the 'Cats, nearly doubling their first half score in the 3rd.  Mt. Baker outscored Oak Harbor 14-11 in the final period, but the final score was 39-25 for the Wildcats.  Bryn Langrock and Kiesha Watts led the team with 9 apiece.  Rahsanna Graham (RG) moved up from the freshman team to score 7 and Julie Jansen finished with 3.  Scoring 2 point each were Janae Payne (JP), Michaela Dasch, Hannah Knoll and Lydia Peplinski.  Jaden Jesus from the freshman squad scored 1 point.

At the end of the first quarter of the varsity game, Oak Harbor held a 15-12 lead, but Mt. Baker dropped in 21 points in the 2nd quarter to take a 33-32 lead at halftime.  Oak Harbor stayed close in the 3rd, which ended with OH trailing 54-47, but a 4-point offensive output by the Wildcats in the 4th quarter let Mt. Baker escape with a 65-51 win.  Joanna Leete finished the game with 18 points, and Jinai Guzman was close behind with 14 points.  Natalie Fiallos scored 7, Liz Lym 6, Hayley Lundstrom 4 and Brook Peplinski 2.

The girls are at home this coming Friday for a game against Stanwood, then travel to Everett on the 18th.

Wrestling 2013-12-15 - Intrasquad scrimmage

Thursday evening the Wildcat Wrestling team opened their season with a fund-raising wrestleoff in the OHHS gym.  At stake were the 14 spots on the varsity squad.

There was a lot of good wrestling, especially from the many freshmen that turned out for this years' team.

Final varsity selections have not yet been announced.

Boys Basketball

The 2-13-2014 boys basketball season kicked off with back-to-back games on Tuesday (vs Anacortes) and Wednesday (vs Ballard).

Tuesday's Anacortes games (Freshman, JV and Varsity) were played at Oak Harbor HS.  The evening started with the freshmen team over in the dome, and it was a close-fought battle for 3 quarters.  At the end of the first period the teams were tied at 12, and the Wildcats went into the locker room at halftime down only 1 point, 24-23.  The boys came back in the 3rd to take a 37-35 lead going into the final quarter, but the Anacortes offense caught fire, pouring in 23 points in the final 8 minutes.  The Seahawks also turned up the defense, holding OH to just 7 points in the 4th.  The final was 58-44 for Anacortes.

Jordan Davenport finished with 12 points for Oak Harbor and Dyllan Bailey scored 6.  Finishing with 5 points each were JJ Mitchell and Joshua Cote.  Adam Nelson, Ty Baker and Eli Loera each scored 4 points.  James Lage and Kurtis Zylstra finished with 2 each.

The next day against Ballard, the freshman team had another tight game.  Oak Harbor led 13-9 at the end of the first and led 23-19 at the half, but this time it was the opponent who came back in the 3rd to take a 31-29 lead.  Regulation time ended with the two teams tied at 38, so off to overtime they went.  The 5th quarter was tight, with neither team leading by more than 2 points, but in the end, the final was Oak Harbor 48, Ballard 46.  Davenport scored 12 and Baker and Cote were also in double figures with Baker scoring 11 and Cote 10.  Zylstra finished with 7, Princeton Lollar 4, and Nelson and Loera scored 2 apiece.

The JV squad struggled against both Anacortes and Ballard.  In the Anacortes game, the Seahawks sprinted to a 16-6 1-quarter lead and held on to win 55-29.  Savion Passmore led the Wildcats with 7 points.  Ben Fikse and Diangelo McKinney scored 5 each, while Anthony Powell, JJ Johnson and D'Andre Bellamy scored 2 each.

In the Ballard game, the Beavers dominated with a stifling defense.  The Wildcats were held to 4 points in the first quarter and just a single free throw in the second as the Seattle team went on to win 57-19.  Preston Rankin led the team with 9 points, all scored in the 4th period.  Johnson scored 3, JJ Mitchell, moving up to JV, scored 2 along with McKinney.  Passmore and Tanner Walker scored 1 point each.

Finally, the two varsity games.

Versus Anacortes, the Wildcats did well for the first two quarters, going into the locker room at halftime down a manageable 33-21.  However, Anacortes came out to start the 3rd quarter on a mission.  The Wildcat offense continued to perform, scoring 15 in the 3rd and 11 in the 4th, but after scoring 33 in the first two periods Anacortes scored 28 in the 3rd quarter alone, and added another 24 in the 4th to win 85-47.  Drew Washington 21 and Dyllan Harris 11 to lead the Wildcat scoring.  Jacob Sturdevant added 6, Gabe Groenig and Zach Jones 3 each, Shane Huttula 2 and Elijah Smith 1.

The next day, Washington and Harris switched roles, with Harris scoring 24 and Washington 12 as Ballard used a 19-4 first quarter to hold on for a 66-43 win.  Also scoring for Oak Harbor were Sturdevant, Jones and Sean Erskine with 2 each and Gabe Groenig with 1.

Next Tuesday the Wildcats are at home against Wesco 4A Snohomish, then again on December 20th against Ferndale before heading to Bellevue for their annual tournament.

BBB 2013-11-30 - Scrimmage

Saturday morning the boys basketball teams gathered in the OHHS gym for a pre-season warmup with some intersquad scrimmage.

The morning started with the Freshman team splitting and playing each other.  Although the C team didn't play two full quarters, they played enough for all the players to get some quality court time.  Ty Baker led all scoring with 8 points.

Then, the freshman team recombined and took on the JV squad.  The scrimmage was closer than many would have thought, with the JV leading 16-13 when time expired.  DeAngelo McKinney led all scoring with 10 points.

Finally, the JV vs Varsity.  This was a full 4-quarter game, with the varsity squad winning 74-48.  Drew Washington scored 26 for the varsity, with Zach Gibbs and Dyllan Harris scoring 15 each.  Also scoring for the varsity squad were Elijah Smith (8), Jacob Sturdevant (6) and Gabe Groenig (4).

For the JV team, McKinney scored 13, JJ Johnson 12 and Savion Hollins-Passmore 10.  Also on the board for the JV team were Anthony Powell (5), and Tanner Walker and Ben Fikse with 4 each.

Middle School Volleyball

Last week was a busy one for the NWMS volleyball squads, as they crammed 4 matches into 5 days.  Fortunately, all but one were at home.

Thursday and Friday were both at home.  Thursday the Cougars hosted Cascade, and although the matches did not go well for North Whidbey, there are some awesome photos of 7th and 8th grade JV and Varsity, along with group photos.

Friday, OHMS came across town with mostly their JV squads.  There were lots of great rallys and the players all got quality time on the court.

NWMS has an away match at Anacortes on Tuesday, then the long Thanksgiving weekend.

There is just one more home match for the Cougars, on December 10th vs Anacortes, and on the 12th they travel to OHMS for the final match of the season.

After an away match on 11/26, the OHMS Panthers will end the season with 4 straight home matches.  They host Cascade on 12/3, Anacortes on 12/5, LaVenture on 12/10 and NWMS on 12/12 for the final match of the year.

All middle school matches are free.

Youth football Holiday tournament

Just when you thought youth football was done for the season, it's not.

This past weekend, two teams from OHYFL traveled to Tacoma for a holiday football tournament.  The Midget Cougars  won 36-0 on Saturday but fell 13-6 in Sunday's game.

The other team was a team made up of the 7th graders from both the Pumas and Jaguars, calling themselves the Wildcats.

Their first game, after a couple of schedule changes, was at Chief Leschi HS in Puyallup against Tacoma Baptist.  After giving up a touchdown early, the Wildcats regrouped and scored 27 unanswered points, including a safety just before halftime.  The final in the first game was 27-6.

Sunday morning was not as good.  The Wildcats played tough defense, allowing opponent Chief Leschi Warriors just one score, and that with just 3 minutes left in the game, but the offense just could not get going and the final was 6-0 in favor of the Warriors.

Volleyball recap

Odd is the best word to describe the 2013 Oak Harbor varsity volleyball season.  The girls started out by losing their first six matches, but won the last two to get the #7 seed in the District Tournament.

Once in the post season, the Wildcats came alive.  After winning a hard-fought 3-2 match against Meadowdale in the first round, the 'Cats were hot in the 2nd round, whipping Everett 3-0 (Oak Harbor had lost to both teams 3-0 in the regular season).  The win over Everett put the Wildcats in the District 1 championship match, and while they played hard, the girls fell to Ferndale 3-1.  With the loss, the 'Cats were the #2 seed from District 1 in the  State tournament, held last weekend at St. Martin's University in Lacey.

At the State Tournament opened, Oak Harbor jumped into the Volleyball Coaches final rankings, ending at #9.  The first match was against #10 Eastside Catholic (#6 in the Seattle Times).  It was a huge match, and the Wildcats pulled out a 3-2 to advance.

Round 2 was against #1 ranked Southridge, and the Wildcats were swept 3-0, putting them in the consolation bracket, but still in the hunt for some hardware.

Round 3 was Saturday morning against #6 Shadle Park (Times #3), and although there were some breath-holding moments during the match, Oak Harbor swept the Spokane team 3-0 to set up one final match for 5th place.  This match was Saturday evening against a familiar foe - Meadowdale.  Yep, the two teams were meeting for the 3rd time this season, with the winner getting 5th and the loser 6th. Meadowdale dominated in the first set, topping Oak Harbor 25-12, but the 'Cats recovered and won the 2nd set 25-17.  Set 3 went to the wire with Meadowdale winning 25-20, then the Mavericks took the final set 25-18 for the 3-1 win.

While the Wildcats are losing some strong players to graduation, they are only losing 3 - Deanna Ruben, Makenna Martyn and Kayleigh Harper.  There will be lots of skill and experience coming back next year.

Middle School Volleyball 2013-11-14

The Middle School Volleyball season opened last Thursday with a set of games at OHMS where the Panthers took on Mt. Baker.

There were 4 matches in all, with each grade played a varsity and JV match, and play for 60 minutes.

In the 7th grade varsity match, OH won the first set 25-23, dropped the 2nd 20-25, and was down 17-23 in the 3rd when the 1-hour time limit expired.

The 8th grade varsity squad got in 3 full sets, but fell 25-20, 14-25, 21-25.

North Whidbey MS had a home game this Thursday, November 21st against Cascade Middle School from Sedro-Woolley.  Matches start around 3:30 in the NWMS gym.

FB 2013-11-09 vs Mt. Si

Last Saturday the Wildcat football team hosted the Mt. Si Wildcats from the Kingco 3A conference in the district crossover game at a special 4pm kickoff time.

Things went fairly well for OH early in the first quarter

Both teams punted on their first possessions, then on Oak Harbor's 2nd possession, Dejon Devroe broke loose down the near side for a 59-yard scoring run.  Mark Johnston's PAT was good, giving OH a 7-0 lead at the 7:44 mark in the 1st quarter.

Five plays later, Oak Harbor forced a fumble, recovering the ball at midfield, but were later forced to punt.

Mt. Si then drove 63 yards in 8 plays to tie the game with 10 seconds left in the first quarter.

The second quarter belonged to Mt. Si.  After holding OH to a 3-and-out, they ran another clock-killing 10 play drive, scoring on a 1-yard plunge to make it 14-7.  Oak Harbor fumbled the ensuing kickoff, and 5 plays later Mt. Si scored again on a 12-yard pass.

At the end of the first half, Oak Harbor put together a nice drive, moving the ball 72 yards, but the drive stalled at the 1.

The halftime score stood Mt. Si 21, OH 7.

Mt. Si got the ball to open the 2nd half and drove 65 yards in 11 plays to score on a 12-yard pass with 8:09 left in the 3rd.  That score would stand to the end of the quarter.

The 4th quarter started with Mt. Si with a 1st and goal at the OH 1 yard line, and just 2 seconds later it was 33-7 for Mt. Si.

A nice 67-yard kickoff return by Devroe put the ball at the Mt. Si 20, but a leaping grab by a Mt. Si defender snagged an OH pass at the 1 yard line.  Two plays later, Mt. Si boosted their lead to 40-7 on a 15-yard pass play.

The final score was Mt. Si 40, OH 7.  Mt Si moves on to play O'Dea in Seattle this Friday night.

In other Wesco 3A playoff action this weekend, Glacier Peak travels to Bellevue, Meadowdale hosts Lakes and Pilchuck hosts Eastside Catholic.

Youth Football 2013-11-02 vs Bellingham Red - playoff

The Senior division semifinal game played Saturday morning at Mt. Vernon was a rematch of a game played just a few weeks earlier.  The Wildcats won that game coming from behind, 33-32.

The 11am game started with a high wind and stinging rain, ruling out much of a passing game.

Things looked good for the Wildcats as they scored with 2:35 left in the 1st quarter, then the offense bogged down with a number of untimely fumbles.  The Wildcats were able to score again with 8:03 left in the half, but missed both PAT kicks to make it 12-0.

Bellingham scored with 1:56 left in the half and made the PAT, but OH still led at the break 12-8.

There was no scoring in the 3rd quarter, then with 4:08 left in the game Bellingham got a touchdown and kicked for a 2-point conversion to take an 18-12 lead.

Not a team to give up, Oak Harbor regained the lead with 3:38 left on a long run and were able to hold on to win 18-16.

As of now, the Wildcats will play for the North Cascade Youth Football League senior division Championship next Saturday at 3pm at Mt. Vernon, taking on either Sedro-Woolley or Ferndale.

FB 2013-11-01 at Meadowdale

Friday night's seeding game vs Meadowdale at Edmonds Stadium was not your usual Wildcat game.

The first quarter ended in a 0-0 tie, with Meadowdale punting twice and the Wildcats once.

On the first play of the 2nd quarter, OH lined up to punt, but the snap was a bit high and went out of the end zone to give Meadowdale a 2-0 lead.

After Oak Harbor kicked back to the Mavericks, Savion Hollins-Passmore shut down a 3-play Meadowdale drive with an and interception and return to the OH 43. 

Nine plays later, Julian Faralan found pay dirt from 6 yards out to put the Wildcats up 6-2.

After forcing another Meadowdale punt, Oak Harbor scored again with 3:08 left in the half when Clay Doughty lobbed a 48-yard pass down the middle to a streaking Dyllan Harris.  The halftime score stood at 13-2.

Oak Harbor's first possession in the 2nd half was ended by a fumble, then Meadowdale completed a 42-yard screen to get the ball down to the 1 yard line where they punched it in to close the score to 13-8.

Another fumbled stopped an OH drive, and Meadowdale again drove down to the 1, but this time the Wildcats forced a fumble and recovered the ball in the end zone, resulting in a touchback.

The 13-8 score also stood at the end of the 3rd quarter.

In the 4th, the first Maverick possession ended with a turnover on downs, the second with a Harris interceptions.  Three plays later it was Faralan again, this time from 16 yards out to make it 20-8.

Yet another Wildcat interception, this one by Dejon Devroe, set up a 25-yard run by freshman Princeton Lollar for his first-ever varsity touchdown.

A late Maverick drive was stopped when defensive lineman Tyler Adamson knocked down a 4th down pass attempt to seal the 27-8 Wildcat victory.

Next for the 'Cats is a home game against Kingco 3A #2 Mt. Si.  The game will be played Saturday, Nov 9th at a special start time of 4pm.

Assuming the Wildcats win that game, they will play the winner of the Kelso/O'Dea game in the first round of the state tournament.

FB 2013-10-28 JV vs Marysville-Pilchuck

Sweet revenge.

After Friday's varsity game at Marysville, the Oak Harbor JV Football team was looking for a little payback Monday evening at OHHS and they got it.

Pilchuck fumbled the ball on their very first play from scrimmage, resulting in a 3-yard Princeton Lollar score just 30 seconds into the game, and the rout was on.

The Wildcats scored once more in the 1st quarter, a 17 yard pass from Tyler Snavely to Steven Timm to make it 13-0.

In the second quarter, Stephen Dixon tossed a 4-yard pass to Fred Miller to make it 19-0 at halftime.

At the 9:20 mark in the 3rd quarter, Lollar crossed the goal line at the end of a 57-yard romp to make it 25-0.

Later in the 3rd, a blocked punt gave OH the ball on the Pilchuck 10 yard line, and after an 8-yard pass from Dixon to Savion Passmore, it was 31-0.

Another fumble by Pilchuck late in the game had Oak Harbor starting another drive in the red zone, and this time it was Taylor Kolste from 3 yards out to set the final score of 37-0.

Youth Football 2013-10-26 - playoffs

There are two Oak Harbor teams still in the playoffs in the North Cascade Youth Football League and both were winners Saturday morning.

The Cougars started things off with a tight 16-14 win over Anacortes.  The Cougars were down in the second half but broke loose a big touchdown, and a timely interception late in the game sealed the victory.

The Cougars play next at Sedro-Woolley HS against Sedro Woolley at 11am.  The two teams met earlier in the season, with the Cougars winning by the closest of margins, 13-12.

The winner of that game goes on to play for the league championship Saturday, November 9th at Mt. Vernon HS against the winner of the Lakewood/Stanwood Red game.

While the Cougars' game was close, the Wildcat's game was not.  Oak Harbor's senior team scored early and often in a 33-8 rout of visiting Lakewood.  Oak Harbor won their first meeting 44-8.

Next weekend the Wildcats travel to Mt. Vernon at 11am for a rematch of last week's game against Burlington Red.  The Wildcat squeaked out a 33-32 win in that game.

An Oak Harbor win would set up a championship game against the winner of the Ferndale (8-0)/Sedro Woolley (5-3) game.  The championship game will be played on November 9th at 3pm at Mt. Vernon HS.

Girls Swim 2013-10-28 vs Monroe

The Wildcat girls swim team ended their regular season Monday at Vanderzicht Pool with a 111-57 win over visiting Monroe.  The win gives the Wildcats their 9th team victory of the season against two losses.  Against 3A north opponents, the Wildcats are a perfect 4-0.

On Halloween afternoon, the JV girls will be in Marysville for the JV district meet, with the top 3 getting spots in the Nov 8th and 9th District Meet, also in Marysville.

On their way to the win, Oak Harbor won all the relay events and Marissa Morris was a double winner, capturing the 200 and 400 free.

Sophia Dickinson (50 free), Irysh Concepcion (100 free) and Kennedy Trisler (100 breast) were other individual event winners.

Cross Country 2013-10-26 Wesco Championship meet at South Whidbey

The Wildcat cross country team shone last Saturday at South Whidbey HS as John Rodeheffer won the 3A race in a time of 16:10.50, a distance of 5,000 meters or 3.1 miles.

Rodeheffer's teammate, Clayton Richardson was 5th overall in 16:42.  Sebastian Ceasar was 18th, Nathan Wagner 34th, Dakota Powers 35th,Miguel Guzman 38th, Brendan Bristow 48th, Stephen Miller 49th, Tristin Mirabel 51st and Caleb Peek 70th out of of 93 runners.

In the JV race, Logan Clark was the top OH runner, finishing in 6th overall in 17:48.  Also running in the race, and in their order of finish were: Mathew Nortier, Steve Hall, Joe Gorman, David Nuanez, Seth Gluth, Ziwei Peng, Nathan Richardson, Alex Hartley, Garrett Stahl, Patrick Abercrombie, Derek Volk, Austin Hauter, Nathan Larson, Scot Erikson, Josh Margraf, Kristopher Medina, Thomas O'Brien, Alex Berry, William Nicholson, and Lucas Nicholson.

Overall the boys team finished in 4th place with a team score of 90.  Shorewood won with 51, Glacier Peak was 2nd with 52.  The JV squad tallied 203 points for 8th place in a combined 3A/4A race.  Henry Jackson HS was first with 42 points, Glacier Peak the top 3A school and 2nd overall with 47 points.  Oak Harbor was 3rd among the 3A JV teams.

The girls varsity team was 3rd overall with 70 points, behind Glacier Peak (33) and Mountlake Terrace (61).  The girls JV team finished 7th overall and was the 3rd 3A team.  Snohomish was first with 27 points, Glacier Peak 2nd and the top 3A school with 37 points.

Individually, Alex Laiblin was 5th overall in 19:34, followed by Jonalynn Horn in 7th (19:44) and Laura Rodeheffer in 10th (19:58).  Marisa Sligh was 22nd, Suzanne Kaltenbach 29th, Kaitlyn Chelberg 30th, Carolynn Wicker 36th, Kaitlyn Smith 45th, and Carly Hall 47th out of 69 runners.

In the girls JV race, Alisa Meany was the top Wildcat finisher, coming in 40th in 24:10.  Also running in the combined 3A/4A, in finish order, were Elyssa Nortier, Hanna Keyes, Alex Higgins, Nikki Blanchard, Carly Crowther, Sierra Seabolt, Sydney Ericksen, and Jackie Dejesus.  There were 142 runners in the race.

On November 2nd, the 3A District meet takes place at Lakewood High School near Arlington with the first race scheduled for Noon.

FB 2013-10-25 at Marysville Pilchuck

Friday night, the final game of the season had major playoff implications for both teams as Oak Harbor traveled to Marysville-Pilchuck.  Both teams entered the game undefeated in league play.

At the same time as the OH-MP game, Glacier Peak and Meadowdale, both undefeated in league play were playing each other. The teams that won would be guaranteed a home game in the District Crossover game, the losers might have to hit the road.

After a series of punts to start the game, Pilchuck got on the board first with a 72-yard run.  The PAT hit the upright and was no good.  With just 49 seconds to go in the 1st quarter, it was OH 0, MP 6.

Just 30 seconds later, Oak Harbor's Dejon Devroe broke loose for a 47-yard run and was tackled at the 1 yard line, then Sheyenne Sams ran around the left side untouched.  Mark Johnston's PAT kick was good, and Oak Harbor led 7-6 with 19 seconds left.

After a long, 11-play drive, the Pilchuck QB snuck in behind a strong offensive line surge to get the TD.  MP went for 2, and the officials ruled the pass complete.  7:57 2nd, OH 7, MP 14.

Oak Harbor fumbled on their next possession, and the Tomahawks took advantage by going 48 yards in 10 plays, scoring on a 17-yard run to make ti 21-7 with 2:10 left in the half.

Pilchuck would score once more before the half, a 49-yard Austin Joyner run as time expired.  The PAT kick was blocked and the halftime score stood at 27-7.

The 2nd half opened with Oak Harbor attempting and recovering an onside kick.  Six plays later the Wildcats faced a 4th & 6 at the Tommie 20 yard line.  OH quarterback Clay Doughty dropped back for a pass and it was caught by Troy Sturdevant who got down to the 3 yard line.  On the next play, Julian Faralan ran it in to close the gap to 27-14 with 9:14 left in the 3rd.

Another long drive by MP put the score to 33-14 on 1-yard QB sneak, and a 3rd quarterback score with 6:17 left in the game put Pilchuck ahead 39-14.

Oak Harbor still had a lot of fight, as Faralan broke loose up the middle for a 70-yard romp, but in the end it was Marysville Pilchuck 39, Oak Harbor 21.

With the loss, OH falls to 6-2 on the season and will play Meadowdale, the Wesco 3A South 2nd place team for the 3rd seed entering the crossover game.  The game will be at Edmonds Stadium on Friday, November 1st at 5pm.  At 8pm Mountlake Terrace will play Stanwood.

The winner of the OH/Meadowdale game hosts Kingco 3A #2 on either Nov 8th or 9th, while the loser will most likely be the 5th place seed and travel to Narrows League #1 in the crossover.  The Narrows #1 will most likely be Lincoln of Tacoma or Timberline of Olympia.

WHEN Oak Harbor beats Meadowdale and beats Kingco #2, they will travel to District 2 #1, which will be the winner of the GSHL #3 and Metro #1 game.

Volleyball 2013-10-24 vs Getchell - Senior Night

While the Freshman team lost all 3 of their games against Getchell 16-25, 24-26, 16-25 and the JV squad split their match 25-23, 25-14, 20-25, the varsity match was all Oak Harbor from start to finish.

The 'Cats were clicking and the Chargers had no answer for the powerful trio of seniors Kayleigh Harper and Makenna Martyn and sophomore Claire Anderson as the girls breezed to a 25-13, 25-9, 25-10 victory.

With one match to go in the regular season, on Wednesday the 30th at Marysville-Pilchuck, the 3-10 'Cats are currently in 7th place in the 10-team Wesco 3A league.  Pilchuck is 2-10 and in 9th place. The team right ahead of OH and currently in line for the final playoff spot is Shorewood, and next week the Thunderbirds play 1st place Meadowdale.  If OH wins and Shorewood loses, the Wildcats will get the playoff spot due to their head-to-head win over the T-birds.

The JV squad is 7-6 on the season and in 3rd place and MP is 4-3 and in 5th place.

The Freshmen are 4-8 on the year an in 7th place while Pilchuck is 2-5 and in last place.
