VB 2014-09-24 vs Shorecrest (Freshmen vs Mt. Vernon)

Wednesday evening the Wildcat volleyball team hosted two teams.

JV and Varsity took on the Shorecrest Scots, while the Freshman team hosted the Mt. Vernon C Squad (Shorecrest does not field a "C" team in volleyball).

In the dome, the freshman girls won easily, defeating the visitors 25-8, 25-9, 25-23.

The JV squad won their first game handily, 25-12, but Shorecrest showed spunk in the 2nd game, but OH pulled out a 25-20 victory.  Shorecrest refused to give up.  Going into the final game knowing they had lost the match, the Scots fought hard and won the 3rd game 25-23.

Varsity action was toe-to-toe throughout.  Oak Harbor pulled out a hard-fought 25-23 victory in game 1, then won a heart-stopping game 2 27-25 before settling down a bit to win game 3 25-19 for the sweep.

The varsity team is now 2-1 in league play, sitting in 2nd place (tied with Shorewood & MP) in the 1-division WESCO 3A league.

The girls are at home on Tuesday the 30th vs Meadowdale then travel to league-leading Glacier Peak on October 2nd.

Girls Soccer 2014-09-23 vs Getchell

At home on Tuesdsay in an occasional shower, the Wildcats hosted the Getchell Chargers.

In the JV game, Jenna Cooley got the Wildcats on the board late in the 1st half, but a penalty kick by Getchell tied the game about halfway through the 2nd half.  Getchell got an additional score with just under 15 minutes remaining to get the 2-1 victory.

Sophomore Mary Johnston scored a goal just before the halfway mark in the 1st half to give OH an early 1-0 lead, but Getchell tied the game later in the half.  The game remained knotted until the end of regulation.  In the two 5-minute 'golden goal' overtime periods, neither team could find the net and the match ended a 1-1 tie.

Boys Tennis update - 2014-09-27

It's been a busy couple of weeks for the Wildcat boys tennis team.

Dodging rain showers, the varsity squad was able to get in 4 matches.

At Arlington on 9-18, the 'Cats picked up wins at 1st and 2nd singles (Jackson Wezeman and Carter Saar), but the rest of the match belonged to the Eagles, who won 5-2.

The next day, vs Getchell, Oak Harbor split the singles matches, with Saar and Tom Dale (3rd singles) both winning in straight sets, then a sweep of the doubles play gave OH a 5-2 win over MG in a match rescheduled from earlier in the week due to rain.

Saar won 6-1, 6-0 while Dale was a 6-0, 6-1 winner.  In doubles, it was 1st team Raymond Paraiso and Jared Alano-Gray winning 6-3, 6-1, 2nd doubles Max Van Dam and partner Nathan Maagdalera won 4-6, 6-2, 6-0 and at 3rd it was Matthew Hallahan and Calib Byers winning 6-2, 6-3.

On September 24th, the Wildcats hosted tennis powerhouse Stanwood and lost 7-0.  Carter Saar took his opponent to 3 sets before falling 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, and Tom Dale played a marathon match before falling 6-3, 5-7, (10-8).

Thursday the team traveled to Pilchuck and picked up another win, 6-1 over the host Tomahawks.  Wezeman won 6-0, 6-1, Dale lost in 3 sets, 0-6, 6-3, 5-7, Kyle Martin, at the 3rd singles spot for the day, won 6-2, 6-1 and Paraiso, playing singles, won 6-0, 7-6(5).

In doubles, Hunt/Byers won 6-3, 6-2, Alexander Smith and Alano-Gray won 6-2, 6-3, and Hallahan and Van Dam won 6-3, 6-0.

In JV action on September 17th, the 'Cats fell 5-2 to Getchell, with 1st singles Brandon Thomas wining 6-1, 6-1 and 1st doubles Sid Thomas and Kevin Brackeen winning 6-3, 6-1.

The next day, the JV boys nipped Arlington 4-3, with Cortez winning 7-5, 6-3, Rheeno Kwak winning 6-0, 6-1, Sid Thomas, at 4th singles, win 6-4, 6-2.

Finally, on September 24th, the JV squad took two from Stanwood, with TJ Cortez winning 6-3, 6-3 at 1st singles and Andy Snyder winning 6-4, 6-3 at 3rd singles.  At 4th singles, Kwak went deep into the 3rd set before falling 1-6, 6-4, 7-10.

At doubles, the 3rd team of JD Cabiting and Cullen Wood won 6-2, 3-6, 10-6.

Varsity has just 3 more home matches:  Tuesday the 30th vs Everett, Oct 7th vs Arlington and Oct 13th vs Pilchuck.

JV is at home on Oct 2nd vs Getchell, Oct 9th vs Stanwood and Oct 15th vs Everett.

Girls Swim 2014-09-22 vs Monroe

Last Monday at the Vanderzicht Pool, it was a Wildcat domination from beginning to end at the Oak Harbor girls swim team splashed visiting 4A Monroe 126-39.

On the way to victory, the 'Cats won 11 of 12 events.

Molly Vagt was a 4-time winner Monday, winning the 100 Fly and 400 Free individually, and as part of the 200 Medley Relay and 400 Free Relay teams.

The previous week, the Wildcats nearly doubled up on Everett, 111-65, but on Thursday the 25th, fell to Mt. Vernon 96-74.

The girls are on the road this week, traveling to Marysville for a tri-meet against Getchell and Pilchuck.  They are at home again on Oct 6th against Stanwood.

Youth fooball 2014-09-20

Two teams traveled to Darrington last Saturday for games, the PeeWee team and the Midget Gold, with both winning their games.  The PeeWees won 35-6 and Midget Gold team 24-0.

At home, the day started with the Midget Purple team falling to Lakewood 30-20 in a very physical game.  The Junior Purple team also lost, in another hard game, 40-19 to Lakewood Gold.

Oak Harbor got on the winning track, defeating Lakewood Maroon 19-16.

In the last game of the day, the Seniors took on Ferndale and battled them to a 0-0 tie at the end of regulation.  Oak Harbor went first in OT, scored a touchdown, but missed the kick PAT.  Ferndale was denied and the Wildcats left with a 6-0 victory in their 2nd overtime in 4 games.

Youth Soccer 2014-09-20

The day started out a bit foggy, but by around 10am there was plenty of brilliant sunshine for the 3rd week of the Fall Rec league at Ft. Nugent Park.

Photo coverage of all U-6 teams is now complete, so next week we'll start on the U-8 teams.

Girls Soccer 2014-09-18 vs Stanwood

The 2014 girls soccer teams (JV and Varsity) both got off to stellar starts.

Beginning the season, the JV started by tying Lakewood 1-1 then fell to Ferndale 2-1.  The roared back to defeat Lynnwood 3-1 then crushed Stanwood last night 5-2.

In that game, Stanwood got on the board first with a ball that gently rolled between the keeper's feet and into the goal - very much a fluke.

The Wildcats came back with two quick goals off the foot of Gillian Crossley.  Malia Hansen and Jenna Cooley added a goal apiece to make it 4-1 at the half.

In the second half, both teams pulled girls to suit up for the varsity game, so scoring was reduced.  Cooley kicked in her 2nd goal of the night and Stanwood put one through to make the final 5-2.

The varsity team in the first 3 games had been lighting up the scoreboard.  The came into Thursday's match undefeated, beating Lakewood 6-1, Ferndale 3-0 and Lynnwood 3-0.

Thursday night, however, the girls could not ignite the scoring spark, despite numerous attempts on the Stanwood goal.  Much credit goes to the stellar net work of Stanwood's freshman keeper, who recorded a shutout.

Stanwood was able to score a goal in each half to win 2-0.

The next home game for the girls in September 23rd vs Getchell, then a special Saturday game.  Anacortes comes to town on Sep 27th with JV kicking off at noon and varsity at 2pm.

FB 2014-09-15 JV vs Ferndale

The Ferndale JV football team came to town Monday afternoon looking to avenge their varsity loss the previous Friday, and accomplished their mission.

Oak Harbor, plagued by mistakes on offense, tried, but was unable to keep Ferndale from rolling up 28 points enroute to shutting out the Wildcats.

There's no JV game this coming week.  The boys return to action on Monday, September 29th at home against Everett.

Boys Tennis 2014-09-15 vs Glacier Peak

There was both good and bad Monday afternoon as the Wildcat tennis team faced off against Glacier Peak, with the JV at home and Varsity on the road.

The bad: Only Tom Dale, Varsity 3rd singles, was able to pull out a victory - 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(3).  All other players, both JV and varsity lost their matches in straight sets.

The good:  It was a beautiful sunny day, and as a result, made for some really great photos!

Youth Football 2014-09-13

Saturday was a good day for Oak Harbor Youth Football, with 5 of 6 teams winning, 3 of them by shutout.

All the games were played on the road.

Next weekend, the 20th, four of the six teams will play at home, two on the road.

The PeeWee team and Midget Gold both travel to Darrington, with the PeeWees at 12 noon and Midgets at 2pm.

As the fall season moves along, our goal is to get photo coverage of every U-6 and U-8 team, and as many U-10 teams as possible.

FB 2014-09-12 Varsity at Ferndale

The Wildcats found their mojo.

Bouncing back from a rough, error-filled loss in week one, the Oak Harbor High School football squad drilled host Ferndale 42-23 Friday, Sept. 12 to even its season record at 1-1.

Playing a near-precision game this time out (no turnovers and just two penalties) the 'Cats used a second-half surge to turn a 16-14 halftime deficit into a romp.

Key to the turnaround was a change in attitude on defense.

After being blitzed for 142 yards on the ground by Ferndale's Marcus Nightingale in the opening half, Oak Harbor stiffened, holding the fullback to just 62 after halftime.

Even that number was deceptive, as 30 of the yards came on a breakaway run long after the game had been decided and the 'Cat first-string defense had retreated to the sideline.

Slowing down the run game, forcing Ferndale to repeatedly punt, Oak Harbor's defense set up things and the 'Cat offense answered the call.

After the first two punts of the night from the host team, the Wildcats drove for touchdowns, tearing up big chunks of yardage in relatively few plays. Oak Harbor went 64 yards on four plays, then piled up a 72-yard, five-play scoring drive to blow things open.

The one-two combo of Princeton Lollar (147 yards on 19 carries) and Dejon Devroe (16-116) powered the offense, while 'Cat quarterback Clay Doughty was 7 of 16 for 121 yards, hitting Dyllan Harris on 42 and 13-yard scoring strikes.

Devroe hit pay dirt on touchdown runs of 23 and 13 yards, Lollar punched in a 2-yard scoring run and Zach Jones busted out a 48-yard run to the end zone.

Oak Harbor rolled up 459 yards of total offense and its lone mistake on the night was a minor one.

The Wildcats gave up two points on a safety when its punter, backed up deep on his end of the field, had to snag a snap that went too high. As he did, his foot brushed the end line for just a moment, long enough for a ref to notice.

The team will have two weeks to work on things like that, as a possible non-conference game against a Canadian school fell through, leaving Oak Harbor with a bye week. The Wildcats face Everett Sept. 26.
