Saturday the Oak Harbor Catz, a combined 5th-8th grade AAU girls basketball team, coached by Gary Brundidge, played a doubleheader at Mt. Baker Middle School in Mt. Vernon.
The first game was against the Friday Harbor Tigers. It was a close game throughout. The Catz were down by just 1 point at the end of the 3rd period and grabbed a small lead late in game. Unfortunately, with just seconds left in the game, the Tigers dropped a 3-point shot and got fouled, so Oak Harbor went from being 2 points up to being on the short end of a 20-18 score.
In the second game, against South Langley from Canada, the girls did not have a good first half, trailing 9-2 at the break, but came out on fire in the second half, especially the 4th quarter. After scoring only 2 points in the entire first half, they scored 16 in the second half. But it was not enough to erase the difference and in the end the girls lost 22-18.
Coach Brundidge was very pleased with the 4th quarter play of the girls. The team, made up mostly of 7th and 8th graders, also has 5th and 6th grade girls and usually plays against teams that are mostly or all 8th grade girls.
