Just a few more seconds is all they needed. In the first league game of the season the Oak Harbor boys basketball team lost to Shorecrest 68-51 at Shorecrest.
In the rematch at OHHS Tuesday night, the Wildcats came back from 8 points down at the beginning of the 3rd quarter and outscored the Scots 21-16, but came just 3 points short as time expired, 63-60.
It was a great game and close through the entire first half. At the buzzer in both the first and second quarter, the score was tied. 12-12 in the first and 24-24 in the second. Shorecrest pulled ahead in the 3rd and held on for the win.
Mike Washington led the scoring with 28 points and Jojo Webster had 13. Dayne Herron and Kevawn Brooks scored 6 each, Matt Burgoyne 4, Elias Whitefoot 2 and Chris Hailer 1.
The JV team also improved starting the second half. In the first matchup with the Scots they lost by 37 points but cut that margin in the rematch to just 24 points, 52-28. Diamonte Ridley scored 16 for the 'cats, Gabe Groenig 4, Andre Cumberbatch, Matt Zafra and Casiano Atienza 2 each and Isaiah Rennes and Rhys Mattila 1 each.
It was a nail-biter in the dome. After falling behind 20-8 in the first quarter and 34-16 at the half, the Freshman team chipped away at the Shorecrest lead, closing the gap to just 2 points with 1:34 remaining, but that's as close as it would get as the 'Cats fell 43-49. Zach Jones scored 22 for Oak Harbor and James Clay was also in double figures with 10. Chris Humphries finished with 4, Gage Eccleston with 3 and Jacob Sturdevant and Ben Fikse with 2 each.
