Boys Soccer 2012-03-23 vs Getchell and 2012-04-10 vs Shorecrest

Catching up a bit in boys soccer, the Wildcats had a pair of games on March 23rd vs visiting Getchell, and although both the JV and varsity teams plays some of their best soccer of the season, the Chargers prevailed, winning the JV game 3-0 and the varsity game 2-0.

Photos of that game are posted HERE.

Boys Soccer 2012-04-02 vs Shorewood

Undefeated and untied Shorewood rolled into town Monday thinking they would have an easy time here in Oak Harbor. They were wrong.

Showing a lot of heart on defense, the Wildcats played to a 0-0 tie at halftime. In addition to a strong defense, a lot of credit goes to goalkeeper Kevin Silveira with his numerous saves.

In the second half, however, the Wildcats had to deal with injuries to a couple of key players and as a result the T-birds were able to get 3 shots into the Oak Harbor goal. The final in the varsity game was 3-0.

In the JV game, Shorewood handled the Wildcats on both offense and defense, rolling to a 5-0 win.

Boys Soccer 2011-04-21 vs Meadowdale

Thursday night was Senior Night for the OHHS Boys Soccer team as Michael Shevchuk would be out of town on a school trip for the final home game of the season.

It was a good move, as the Wildcats picked up their second win of the season when Caley Powers punched it in with less than 3 minutes remaining in the 2nd overtime.

The Mavericks got on the board first with a 1st-half score, but Shevchuk tied the game with an assist by Alex Krantz.

The JV team scored on a free kick by Ben Muyres, but fell 2-1.

Boys soccer vs Lynnwood and Mountlake Terrace

Friday evening the OHHS boys soccer team played the Lynnwood Royals at OHHS then played Mountlake Terrace on Monday, also at home.

In the Lynnwood JV game, the Royals jumped out to an early lead and dominated the Wildcats 7-0. In the varsity game, while the ball spent a lot of time in the Royals' end of the field, regulation time ended in a 0-0 tie, then the two 5-minute overtime periods also ended with the score 0-0. The game then moved to a best of five shootout, and the Lynnwood goalkeeper was able to stop two of the OH shots, giving Lynnwood the win.

Monday it was the Mountlake Terrace Hawks at Wildcat Memorial Stadium. The JV team led 2-1 midway through the 2nd half, but MLT was able to tie the game late and JV ended in a 2-2 tie.

Michael Shevchuk scored on a penalty kick just 6 minutes into the varsity game then went on to score 3 more times, assisted twice by Caleb Gatica-Cortes and once by Matt Jensen, who scored two goals of his own in the 2nd half. The final score was Oak Harbor 6, MLT 2.

Boys Soccer 2011-03-19 vs Arlington

It was a beautiful day for soccer at OHHS as the boys JV and Varsity soccer teams split wins against visiting Arlington.

The JV game was scoreless until Ryan Gilman got a penalty kick past the Eagle goalkeeper in the second half for the game's only score.

The varsity game was scoreless until Arlington got 3 quick goals in the final 20 minutes of the 1st half. Oak Harbor's Michael Shevchuk scored on a second effort in the 51st minute but that would be the Wildcats' only score.

The boys next game is away at top-ranked Glacier Peak on Tuesday then they are at home Friday against Lynnwood.

93 photos from the two games, plus group photos of each team, are posted HERE.

Boys Soccer 2010-05-03 vs Monroe

On Senior Night, the OHHS soccer teams went to the field to try to avenge losses to Monroe earlier in the year.

Back in April the JV team lost to Monroe 6-0, and looked like Monroe was going to win again as the Bearcats held a 1-0 lead for most of the game. Late in the 2nd half, however, Oak Harbor was able to kick in a goal and the game ended in a 1-1 tie.

Before the varsity game time was taken to recognize this years' seven seniors and their parents. Playing their final game at Wildcat Memorial Stadium were #3 Greg Wolfe, #5 Tyler Lauzen, #6 Jake Sandefur, #7 Ryan Fakkema, #11 Marcos Anjos, #12 Brandon Oppenheim and #17 Clay Mosolino.

On the field, Monroe scored first, but not more than a minute later Wolfe kicked it in to tie the game. By halftime, though, Monroe opened a 4-1 lead and the only other scoring in the game was a Michael Shevchuk penalty kick in the 2nd half leaving Monroe on top 4-2.

94 photos from the two games as well as photos of the seniors with their families are posted HERE.

Boys soccer 2010-04-16 vs Lake Stevens

The Wildcat varsity soccer team put a big scare into 8-1 and 1st place Lake Stevens last Friday at Wildcat Memorial Stadium.

With 10 minutes left to play in the game, Oak Harbor was down by just one goal, 3-2, and was aggressively playing the ball, hoping for one more. What happened is that a Viking player broke free and was able to kick the ball into the net to make it 4-2. What hurt most was that the score after the kick should have been 2-2 and heading towards overtime. Earlier in the game, Oak Harbor had knocked the ball into their own goal on 2 occasions to give LS the extra points it needed for the win.

The JV team had a hard time dealing with the talented Vikings, falling 7-1.

Boys soccer 2010-04-06 vs Arlington

After a nice spring break the boys soccer team was back in action Tuesday against Arlington.

Even though there were no offensive goals scored by Oak Harbor, the final of the JV game was 4-1. Early in the 1st half, Arlington passed the ball back to their goalkeeper who was not ready for the pass and watched the ball roll by him and into the net for an Oak Harbor goal.

The varsity score was similar but Arlington didn't score against themselves in that game, leaving the final at 4-0.

Boys Soccer 2010-03-18 vs Stanwood

The JV and Varsity soccer teams each opened their 2010 season with identical 5-0 losses to the Stanwood Spartans.

The JV game was not out of hand until very late in the game. Late in the 2nd half it was 2-0 in favor of Stanwood, but a hand ball was called on OH in the box, setting up a penalty kick for Stanwood that went it. After that the air seemed to go out of the Wildcats and Stanwood knocked in two more goals.

In the varsity game, it was all OH in the first half in every place except the scoreboard. The Wildcats dominated early, getting several shots on the goal but the Stanwood goalkeeper was seemingly everywhere to stop then before going in. On the other end, Stanwood got a couple of lucky breaks and was able to scoot balls into the Wildcat net and added 3 more before the end of the game.

Boys Soccer 5-6 vs Lake Stevens - Senior Night

It was senior night and the final game of the season last Wednesday as the Oak Harbor Wildcat boys soccer team faced off against playoff-bound Lake Stevens, whom the Wildcats beat 2-1 on April 17th.

Jack O'Neil has a couple of great saves in the first half and continued to be perfect throughout the game as the Wildcats won 2-0.

Michael Shevchuk scored first on a Kevin Flavin assist in the 69th minute, the Greg Wolfe scored an unassisted goal with less than 5 minutes left in the game.

The JV team didn't fare as well. The score was close throughout the first half, but Lake Stevens scored 3 quick goals to open a lead too big to overcome.

Boys Soccer 4-28 vs Cascade

Jack O'Neil had several saves during the first half, including a couple of spectacular diving saves as the varsity team ended the 1st half in a 0-0 tie, but two quick goals by Cascade midway through the second half was more than the Wildcats could overcome, falling 2-0.

The JV team played hard, but was overpowered by the Bruins in the end.

Soccer 4-14 vs Monroe

The JV soccer team is still trying to find a rhythm, falling 3-0 to Monroe. The defense is getting better each match, but the boys want to find a way to get the ball into their opponent’s net on a regular basis.

The OH varsity got on the board first on a Keven Flavin goal, but Monroe tied the game just before halftime. In the 2nd half, the teams traded goals making the score 2-2, but with less than 5 minutes left in the game, the Wildcats were called for a penalty inside the goal box. Goalkeeper Jack O’Neil went 1-on-1 against the Monroe player and dove to his left to deflect the initial kick, but he wasn’t able to gather the ball in before another Monroe player kicked it into the net. The team played well and should not hang their heads over the loss.

Boys Soccer 4-8 vs Stanwood

The varsity Soccer team hosted Stanwood for their 2nd meeting of the year last Wednesday at Wildcat Memorial Stadium with the same results – a Wildcat win.

Three different OH players got in on the scoring – Greg Wolfe, Michael Shevchuk and Kevin Flavin, while Jack O’Neil had several saves and recorded a shutout. The win takes the Wildcats above .500 with a 4-3 overall record.

The JV team was down most of the game and a late goal closed the Spartan lead to 2-1. However, Stanwood tightened their defense and prevented a second Oak Harbor score to secure their win.

Pics from both JV and varsity games, along with a few ‘faces in the crowd’ photos are posted HERE.

Varsity Soccer wins again!

The varsity soccer team improved to 2-1 on the season after beating Everett 2-1 on Saturday afternoon.

Everett scored 1st very early, but with just under 30 minutes remaining in the 1st half, Kevin Flavin, assisted by Greg Wolfe, scored a goal, and then with 14 minutes left, Everett was called for illegal contact just outside the net and Kevin Flavin scored again on the penalty kick.

There was a scary moment just after the 2nd half started when Connar Zimmerman and an Everett player went head-to-head, opening bloody gashes. Both boys had to go to the hospital for stitches, but should be fine. Connar's mom reported the he needed 4 stitches to close his wound, and should be playing again soon.

With less than two minutes left, Everett drove on the OH goal and took a good shot, but a spectacular dive by goalkeeper Jack O'Neil prevented the Everett score and Oak Harbor held on for the 2-1 win.

The JV boys played hard, but scored only a single goal, falling to the Seagulls 5-1.

103 images from both the JV and Varsity matches, including Connar's bloody head, are posted HERE.
