AAU Girls basketball

Saturday afternoon, the 7^th and 8^th grade girls AAU basketball teams were both in action in their final game of the S.W.I.S.H league in Skagit County. The 7^th grade girls were at LaVenture Middle School against Lynden and the 8^th grade team was at Sedro-Woolley High School against Coupeville.

The 7^th grade team is made up of mostly 6^th grade girls and one 5^th grader, but since there are 2 7^th grade girls on the team, they play the 7^th grade schedule.

At the end of the 1^st quarter, the OH girls scored only 2 points, but came back in the 2^nd to score 6, then added 6 more in the 3^rd. However, they just didn’t have enough to overcome Lynden as the Cats lost 17-42. Leading the team in scoring was Rosie, with 8 points, followed by Deja with 5. Sade and R.G. netted 2 points each. The 7^th grade team finished the season 2-7 overall.

At Sedro later that afternoon, OH started out slow against their neighbors to the south with the 1^st period ending in a 4-4 tie. In the 2^nd period our girls took control of the game, outscoring Coupeville 10-2 to take a 14-6 lead at halftime. They increased their lead to 20-8 at the end of the third, but Coupeville wasn’t out, scoring 8 points in the final period and holding Oak Harbor to just 3. It wasn’t enough for Coupeville as OH won the game 23-16. “Speedy”, Monica and Brooke all scored 6 points each for the team, “Big Mac” and “Flash” added 2 each and Sierra hit a free throw to complete the scoring. The team ended the season with a 4-3 overall record.

While both teams ended the regular season, they still have the League Tournament to play. The 8th grade team plays at 2:35pm this coming Saturday, Dec 11th at LaConner High School. The 7th grade team plays at 9am at LaConner Middle School.

Girls Basketball 12-14-2009 vs Snohomish

The girls basketball finally got their 2nd home game of the season, facing off against the Snohomish Panthers.

In the field house, the freshman teams were tied at 7 after the first period, but the Wildcats took control and opened a 17-11 halftime lead. The two teams again played even in the 3rd, scoring 5 each. The 4th quarter saw almost half the scoring of the entire game. Snohomish managed to drop in 13 points to up their total to 29, but the Wildcats put up 16 of their own to win 38-29. Jalani Bob and Marissa Lewis both had 9 points to lead the team. Bet Riba and Joem Evangelista scored 6 each, Paula Gass and Emily Saar 2 each and Danielle Teasley 1.

The beginning of the JV game looked good, with OH going up 7-0 before allowing a Snohomish score with 1:32 left in the first. However, the girls scored only one more field goal the rest of the game, a Naomi Walker layin with 3:19 left in the 3rd. All of the other OH points came off free throws, and they were just 4 for 19 from the stripe. The final score was Snohomish 32, OH 12. Dominique Jackson scored 4 to lead the team. Addy Royal had 3, Naomi Walker and Kelsey Rankin 2 each, and Lia Pantoleon hit one free throw. Part of the JV problem was that 4 players were out with injuries, two of them starters.

The varsity game was similar to the JV game, with the team gaining an early 6-2 lead and holding it until there were less than 2 minutes to go in the first period. Snohomish hit a pair of 3-pointers to lead 12-9 at the first break. Clarissa Abadesco scored just 20 seconds into the 2nd to bring OH to within 1, and later a pair of free throws by Jessica Denmon put OH back in the lead 15-14. That was the last lead OH would have as Snohomish went on a 10-0 run to end the first half, leading 24-15. OH fought back in the 3rd, with a buzzer-beating shot by Denmon closing the gap to just 4, then a Nicki Mowbray FT making it a 3-point game. That's as close as it would get as Snohomish won 40-33. Denmon led the team with 19, Mowbray with 4 (all free throws), Abadesco 4, Jessica James 3 and Naomi Walker 2.

The girls play at home again on Wednesday against Everett.
