Middle School Boys Basketball 12-7-2009 NWMS

The North Whidbey Middle School Cougars had their home opener Monday afternoon in the NWMS gym, facing off against the Burlington Tigers in 7th and 8th grade games.

The 7th grade boys jumped to a 6-2 lead early, but BE tied things up halfway through the first period, finishing the opening quarter with a 12-10 lead. 6 of the Tigers' 1st period points came off free throws against none for NW. The Cougars tied the game again just over a minute into the 2nd, but Burlington got hot and finished the half by going on an 18-4 run to lead 30-16 when the buzzer sounded. Things didn't get much better in the 3rd period as NWMS scored 8 points but allowed 19. Starting the final period, Burlington's lead was 49-24, and although the Cougars outscored the Tigers 15-4 in the 4th, it wasn't enough as Burlington won the game 53-39.

Burlington played most of the 8th grade game on cruise control, as they sprinted to a 20-4 1st quarter lead, increasing it to 35-13 at the half. North Whidbey could score only two 3rd period points, and when the score was reset at the end of the 3rd period, the score was 58-15.

Next up for the Cougars is a trip across town to Oak Harbor Middle School for their first meeting. More games will be scheduled later in the season, but this is the league scheduled game that will count for league standings.
