Youth Football - playoffs

It was a busy two weekends for Oak Harbor Youth Football with the playoffs in full swing.

On November 4th, the Pumas, Jaguars and Wildcats all played at Wildcat Memorial Stadium. If the Pumas and Jaguars both won, it would set up an all-OH final in the junior division Superbowl.

The Jaguars were up first, and were the only 'home' team that day, playing against Arlington Blue. The Jags played a solid game, defeating the Eagles 23-6 and moving on to the Superbowl.

Next were the Pumas, up against Ferndale. The Golden Eagles were in control throughout the first half, leading 22-0 at the break. OH scored twice coming out of halftime to make it 22-12, but that's as close as it would get as Ferndale scored 3 unanswered touchdowns and ended up winning 44-24 and would face the Jags at Mt. Vernon HS on November 12th.

Finally the Wildcats also were playing Ferndale. The Golden Eagles scored first to make it 7-0, but OH bounced back with a touchdown of their own and with a 2-point conversion took an 8-7 lead. That was the first time all year the undefeated Ferndale team had been behind in a game.

Ferndale came back to regain the lead 13-8 midway through the 2nd quarter, but a 5-yard TD run by the Wildcats put them back on top 14-13 with 2:11 left in the half. Ferndale then scored with just 15 seconds left and took a 20-14 lead into the locker room.

After the halftime intermission, Ferndale struck first, capitalizing on a Wildcat fumble and extending their lead to 26-14, seemingly in control of the game, especially when the Golden Eagles intercepted an OH pass at the 40 late in the 3rd quarter.

Down but not out, Oak Harbor fought back, scoring on a 72-yard pass wtih 7:43 left in the game to make it 26-22, then force a Ferndale turnover on downs. A 9-play Wildcat drive ended with OH in the lead 28-26 and only 2:36 left on the clock. Ferndale then drove down to the OH 26, and with just 26 seconds left in the game a 4th down pass attempt fell incomplete at the OH 1 yard line, and the Wildcats ended the game by taking a knee and moving on to face Sedro Woolley in the championship game.

On November 12th at Mt. Vernon HS, the weather could scarcely have been worse. It was cold, windy and rainy.

The Jags were first, starting their game at 4pm. Both teams went back and forth with little offensive output. With just 8 seconds left in the game, Ferndale took over and completed one of their only pass completions of the day, but it ended in the Jaguar end zone. It was a sudden and shocking end to a defensive battle. The final was 12-6.

In the nightcap, Sedro Woolley proved to be too much for the Wildcats as they won 33-8.

Overall it was a great season for Oak Harbor Youth Football. Out of the six teams playing this year, 5 went to the playoffs, 4 played in semifinal games, 3 in championship games and the Pee Wee Bobcats won the division championship.

Youth football 2011-10-22

All six Oak Harbor youth football teams were in action last Saturday, with 4 teams playing at home.

On the road at Mt. Vernon, the peewee Bobcats played their first-round playoff game against Arlington Blue and beat them 13-0. They now move on to a semifinal game next weekend.

Also away were the junior Pumas, who fought hard but came up 2 points short in a 28-30 loss to Arlington Gold. The Pumas end the regular season with a 4-3 record.

At home, the Panthers started the day, playing Sedro White in a pouring rain. The game was close, but Oak Harbor won 39-26. The Panthers finished the regular season with a 4-3 record and will be in the playoffs starting next Saturday.

Next were the senior Wildcats. They came out flat and were never really competitive in the game against Sedro Woolley, falling 32-8. The Wildcats ended the season with a 6-2 record and will be in the playoffs next weekend.

The third game was the undefeated junior Jaguars vs 0-7 Stanwood. The Jag stumbled through the early parts of the game, ahead, but not putting it away. Late in the game they settled down to win 24-0 and finish in first place in the Junior Mountain division.

Finally, the midget Cougars also played Stanwood, and this game did not go well for Oak Harbor. The Cougars scored on a punt return, but that was it as Stanwood went on to win 38-6. The Cougars will no be in the playoffs this year.

Oak Harbor Youth Football 2011-08-27

The OHYFL kicked off the 2011 regular season with all 6 teams in action, 3 at home.

In the 9am game the Junior Pumas took on Burlington Gold. Burlington grabbed an early 12-6 lead in the first half fog, with the only Puma score coming on an interception return.

The Pumas came back to tie the game 20-20 with 9:19 left in the game, then went ahead 26-20 with 6:42 left. Burlington then drove down to the OH 6 yard line but were stopped on a 4th-and-3 play.

Oak Harbor then was looking at a 4th and less than one play with just over a minute left, but a false start backed the team up 5 yards and they could not convert.

The Tiger then scored on a 1st and goal play with 58 seconds on the clock and ran the PAT to take a 27-26 lead.

The Pumas were not out. After returning the kickoff to the Burlington 48, the Tigers bit on a fake reverse and the Pumas were in the end zone, leading 233-27 with 30 seconds left. Burlington was able to move the ball down to the OH 33 when time expired, leaving Oak Harbor 1-0 on the year.

The 11am game was the Cougars vs Arlington Blue. The Cougars return only 4 players from last years' team. Arlington ran to a 20-0 halftime lead and extended it to 34-0 halfway through the 3rd period.

On the next kickoff, Oak Harbor returned the ball 72 yards for their only score of the game. The final in this game was 40-6 in favor of Arlington.

Finally, the PeeWee Bobcats were all over Arlington Gold in the final home game of the day. Arlington's first possession lasted 3 plays - all resulting in a loss of yardage while Oak Harbor's first offensive play was a 25-yard touchdown run. The Bobcats continued to score both on the ground and through the air, with an impressive 39 yard pass play late in the 4th quarter. 14 yards were through the air and 25 yards after catch. Final score - Bobcats 26, Arlington Gold 0.

In the away games, the senior Wildcats lost to Ferndale 21-6, the Midget Panthers lost to Burlington Gold 18-8 and the Junior Jaguars beat Ferndale 6-0.

No game next week, Labor Day weekend. The league resumes action on September 10th with 4 home games at Ft. Nugent - Cougars vs Mt. Vernon Black at 9am, Wildcats vs Arlington Blue at 11am, Panthers vs Stanwood at 1pm and the Bobcats vs Stanwood at 3pm. The Jaguars are at Arlington Gold and the Pumas have a bye.
