Track and Field 4/26, 4/29 and 4/30

It was a very busy week for the Oak Harbor track team as they participated in a total of 3 meets during the week, including back-to-back meets on Thursday and Friday.

The week started with a JV/All-comers meet at Stanwood HS. It was a cool day and towards the end started to rain steadily, but all the athletes enjoyed themselves and worked hard. Results have not been posted so are not available.

Thursday saw the last regular season track meet of the year with the Wildcats traveling to Everett Memorial Stadium to take on Everett and Marysville. Since most athletes would be competing again the next day, the coaches limited them to just 2 events each, resulting in a lower overall point score than OH would normally get.

Starting with the boys, there was only one OH winner for the day and that was senior Donovan Hunt in the long jump, but there were a number of 2nd place finishers. Josiah Miller was 2nd in the 100m dash, Matt Reith in the 800, Josh Sayre was 2nd in the 300m hurdles, Josh Higbee in the Long Jump and Andy Haag in the triple jump. Hunt is currently has the 14th best long jump in the state in 4A.

In addition to the top finishes above, 13 Wildcat boys set new season or personal records in a variety of events.

Cody Hernkind set a PR in the high jump of 5-4 on his way to a 3rd place finish. Jalen Williams finished just out of the top 10 in the 200m dash but set a PR of 25.51. Jeshaiah Davis set two PRs on the day, running 25.74 in the 200 and 58.03 in the 400. Matt Reith ran the 800 in 2L08.55 and Conner Meyers also set a PR in the race of 2:16.11

Both runners in the 1600 had season bests. Nate Miller had his best time this season with a 5:15.25 and Lucas Salmons set a PR with a 5:17.49.

In field events, Javon Payne threw the javelin 128-8, Dakota Sinchak hit 106-6 and Zach Wallace 99-1. All 3 were all-time bests.

As mentioned above, Josh Higbee was 2nd in the long jump and did it with a leap of 19-9.75, over a foot further than his previous best. In the triple jump it was Andy Hagg with a 38-4.5, nearly a 1-foot PR, and Chase Edwards jumped 33-1.5 for 8th place.

Overall the boys finished 3rd in the 3-way meet with 26 points.

The girls won 8 events and finished 3rd or better in 8. There was a 1-2-3 finish for OH in the 1600 and a 1-2 finish in the long jump. OH winners were Shantae Young in the 100m dash, Naomi Walker in the 200, Addy Royal in the 1600, Allison Duvenez in the 100 hurdles, the OH 4x100 relay, Amanda Alvarado in the shot put, Elizabeth Adkins in the discus and Nicki Mowbray in the long jump. Finishing in second place were the 4x200 and 4x400 relay teams, Dominique Jackson in the discus, Janessa Ramos in the long jump and Mowbray in the triple jump.

16 athletes set season or personal records during the meet: Jalani Bobo ran the 100 in 14.16 and ran the 400 for the first time this season and finished 4th. Jember Jansen set a PR in the 200 of 28.82 and was just .01 second from a PR in the 100 as well. Aimee Kelly ran the 400 for the first time and set a PR by nearly a half-second in the 100m dash. Maura McKole finished 4th in the 200 with a season best 28.19. Also running her first 400 ever was Kelsey Johnson who finished in 5th place. The two Hannahs, Bressler and Kagey, both set PRs in the 1600. In the hurdles races, Megan Duhrkopf broke her PR in the 100 with a time of 19.61 and Shannon Wolfe ran the 300 in 58.03, knocking over a second off her previous best.

In field events, freshman Elizabeth Adkins broke her old PR by nearly 7 feet in the discus and Nicki Mowbray got 33-6 in the triple jump on her way to a 2nd place finish.

The girls didn't win the meet, but came in 2nd with 65 points. MP won with 77 and Everett was 3rd with 43 points.

Finally, Friday evening was meet at Mt. Vernon High School, the "Clash of the Counties". The meet featured a number of Skagit County 2A and 3A schools going up against Marysville, Stanwood and Arlington from Snohomish County and Oak Harbor. While the small schools won some events, the depth of the big schools carried the day. In individual team scoring, the OH girls won by one point over Arlington, 35-34 while on the boys side M-P won with 35 points and OH was 7th with 14.

As is the current pattern, Naomi Walker won the 100 and 200, Addy Royal the 1600 and Shante Young the triple jump. The OH girls also won the 4x100 relay race. On the boys side, only Donovan Hunt was a winner, leaping 21-1-75 in the long jump. One surprise is that Young did not win the long jump - the only time this year she hasn't taken the event.

There was a scary moment in the 300 hurdles race when Allison Duvenez caught her knee on the final hurdle and fell down. She got up and finished the race, earning 4th place, but found out later she broke a bone in her wrist. It's unknown at this time if she'll be able to compete in the WESCO championships.

Even though it was cool and started to rain near the end of the meet, there were a number of PRs set. Raeanna Wynne did well in the 100h and both Hannah's set PRs, but this time it was Bressler in the 800 and Kagey in the 1600. Hannah K. broke the 6-minute barrier for the first time in the mile with a 5:59.2. Also in the 800, Christina Wicker set a PR of 2:33.61, good enough for 8th place.

Over on the boys side, Hunt again was the only winner, taking the long jump and OH produced only three 2nd place finishers - Matt Bolte in the 800, Hunt in the triple jump and the 4x100 relay. Even though Matt finished 2nd in the 800, he was surrounded by his teammates and the coaches were literally jumping for joy as Matt broke the 2-minute barrier and broke it big, finishing in 1:57.57. With Matt in the 800 were Conner Meyer and Josh Crebbin who both set new PRs. Continuing the theme of distance PRs, Matt Reith set a PR in the 3200 and tied his 1600 PR, Nate Miller set season records in both the 1600 and 3200 and Lucas Salmons ran the 3200 in 11:31 for a PR.

Next up for track is the WESCO Freshman invite Tuesday at Mariner HS and the WESCO JV championships Wednesday at Snohomish HS. The WESCO North championships start on Wednesday, May 12th and finish on Friday the 14th at Arlington HS.

Currently, Naomi Walker had the 5th fastest time in the state in the 100 meter dash with a time of 12.32 seconds. The best time in the state so far is 12.13. Walker's time is the 4th best in 4A and her 200 meter dash time is 7th in 4A. The OHHS 4x100 relay time's best time of 49.74 puts them in 7th place. Shantae Young owns the long jump in Washington state this year. Her jump of 18-3.5 is the best in the state this year by 1.5 inches and her triple jump of 37-0.5 is 3rd best in the state and her 100m time is good enough for 13th in 4A. Allison Duvenez has the 20th best mark in the 300m hurdles in 4A

Matt Bolte has the 20th best 800 meter time in 4A and Donovan Hunt is tied with two others for 14th in the long jump.

Baseball 2010-04-28 vs Arlington

The JV and Varsity baseball teams were both in action against Arlington last Wednesday, with the JV team and home and the Varsity on the road.

Varsity had a big 7th inning, scoring all 6 of their runs with 2 outs. It was enough as the Wildcats held off the Eagles to win 6-4.

The JV team wasn't as lucky and fell to the Eagles.

Softball 2010-04-28 vs Monroe

The varsity softball team again had problems getting runs across the plate as they lost to Monroe 10-2.

JV results aren't available, but the girls had a big 2nd inning, batting around the order and scoring a bunch of runs.

Girls Basketball 4/26 Spring League

The OHHS girls basketball team is winding down their spring league season and played 2 games last Monday against Lake Stevens. The first game was against the LS JV team and OH won convincingly, 19-8. Against JV teams Oak Harbor is 3-3 on the season.

Right after the JV game the same group of girls, who are all freshmen or sophomores (and one 8th grader) went up against the 6-1 Lake Stevens varsity team. The results in this game were reversed as the Vikings had their way with the Wildcats, winning 55-13

JV baseball recap from last week

The following was sent by JV coach Day about last week's JV baseball games.

Tuesday was a 6-1 win at Monroe

Dimitri Munoz pitched a complete game allowing six hits but only one walk and one run while striking out 7.

Peter Franssen was 1-2 with two walks and a three-run HR.  He scored three runs.

Sam Glavick was 2-4 with an RBI double and a two-run home HR.

Josh Schrum was 1-1 with a double and scored on Peter Franssen's home run.



Wednesday was an 11-1 win over Cascade

Jack Richter pitched another complete game (5 innings) allowing one run on four hits.  He walked one and struck out four.

Andrew Snavely was 2-2 with a walk two HR's and three RBI's.

Glenn Meuller hit a hard single to the left field fence.

Grant Schroeder was 2-3 with two RBI's.

Peter Franssen was 3-4 with two singles, two runs, two RBI's and the game ending walk-off Home Run in the bottom of the 5th.


Last night's game was a 17-16 loss to Cascade.

After getting six runs in top of the first, we gave up 16 unanswered runs over the next two innings, including 12 in the 2nd.  Over the next three innings we battled back to a 16-16 tie.  Cascade scored one in the bottom of the 6th to end the rain-shortened game.

Rodrick Murphy was 2-3 and scored two runs.

David Kusnick scored three times after reaching base on a walk, being hit by a pitch, and a fielder's choice.  He added a single in the top of the 6th.

Mike Maletto was 2-4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored.

Youth Soccer 2010-04-24

3 weekends into the season and we finally got out to get some photos of the youth soccer games at Ft. Nugent Park. As usual, there were hundreds of kids in brightly colored uniforms running all over the fields, getting sweaty and dirty and just having fun. And, of course, most of the teams have original and sometimes unusual team names.

In BU-6 action the Red Cobras faced off against the Orange Komodo Dragons. 58 photos are posted HERE. The Komodo Dragons are sponsored by AAA Climate Control Mini Storage.

2010 Eagle Run

The 6th Annual Eagle Run, in conjunction with Oak Harbor's Holland Happening and run by the Oak Harbor Christian School was held last Saturday, April 24th. The event consisted of 2 events, a 1-mile fun run and a 5k road race.

The 1-mile run was mostly for kids, as evidenced by the top finishes. There were 135 total entrants but only 17 were over 14 years old. In fact, the top finisher 14 and over was 19th place and the overall winner was an 11 year old girl in 6:24. The first true adult was 33 year old Ron Reichenbach who finished in 29th overall with a time of 8:11.

The 5k winner was Andrew Wyman and 2nd place was John Rodeheffer who is just 13 years old. Of the top 20 finishers 5 were 14 or under and one more was just 15 years old.

Photos are divided into 3 sections.

The first section, HERE, has Whidbey Island Running Club members that were entered in the 1-mile run. Since our policy is to not identify by name athletes who are 12 or younger, the photos are marked by bib number and for the most part are in finish order.

The second section is WIRC runners who were in an identifiable WIRC uniform and running in the 5k race. There are 37 photos and are posted HERE. Again, only those over the age of 12 are identified by name.

The 3rd and largest section is most of the other runners in the 5k race. There are 228 photos with all but a few identified by name. Names come from the results posted online over the weeked. There are a few photos where the bib number was missing or could not be read. All photos are roughly in finish order and can be found by clicking HERE.

Track 4-22 and 4-24

The OHHS track team had two meets this week. The first was the final home meet of the 2010 season and surprisingly, the OH women didn't win. Arlington took the ladies side of the meet wtih 96 points. OH had 79 and Monroe 14. On the boys side it was Arlington 71, Monroe 56 and OH 54.

Freshman Naomi Walker was again a double winner in the 100 and 200 and as a member of the 4x100 relay team. She was second in the long jump behind OH's Shantae Young. Walker set new PRs in both the 100 and 200 and may have broken the school record as well. Also finishing in the top 10 for OH were Shantae Young, Janessa Ramos, Janelle Yoshimoto and Christina Alexander in the 100 and Ramos, Alexander, Maura McKole and Jalani Bobo in the 200

Junior Addy Royal won both her distance events, the 800 and 1600 meter run, setting a new PR in the 1600 of 5:18.79 and Abby Leete won the 3200 in 11:59.20. Also running in distance events were Hannah Bressler, Hannah Kagey, Emily Bain, Christina Wicker and Jessica Denmon,

Christina Wicker, Maura McKole, Allison Duvenez and Adrianna Royal teamed up to win the 4x400 relay in 4:17.34. In 3rd place was the "B" relay with Denmon, Raeanna Wynne, Jansen and Bressler in 4:37.05.

Duvenez won the 300 meter hurdles race. She finished 3rd in the 100 hurdles but set a new PR of 16.86. Running both races with Allison were Raeanna Wynne, Joem Evangelista and Shannon Wolfe. Megan Duhrkopf was in the 300m hurdles only and finished 8th.

In fact, the girls won every running event with the exception of the 100 hurdles and the 400 meter dash, where McKole finished in second by just over a second in 1:03.52 and Wicker was right behind in 1:03.57 and Jember Jansen was 3rd in 1:06.53.

As OH dominated the running events, Arlington swept the throwing events, getting 1-2-3 finishes in the shot put and javelin and the top 2 spots in discus. The Eagles also finished 1-2 in the high jump. Monroe took the top 2 spots in the pole vault and OH took the top 2 spots in both long and triple jump.

The top finisher for OH in the shot put was Amanda Alvarado with a toss of 32-3.5, good enough for 4th place. Dominique Jackson (DJ) and Danielle Teasley. Danielle threw over a foot further than her previous best.

In discus, DJ finished in 3rd with a new PR of 90-0. Elizabeth Adkins was 6th and Carlie Olson 9th.

Nicole Mowbray was the top javelin thrower for OH on Thursday with a distance of 93-8 and 5th place. Yoshi finished 7th, Ciera Wiser 12th, Nikita Ford 13th and Carlie Olson 15th.

Mowbray was also the top OH high jumper. Even after banging her head she still leaped the bar at 4-6.

As usual, it was Shantae Young at the top of the long and triple jump finishers. Walker was 2nd in the long jump and Mowbray was 5th. Yoshi came in tied for 6th and Katelyn Bristow was 13th. In the triple jump Mowbray was behind Young - just under 5 inches behind. Bristow was 7th and Chylan Bass 12th.

For the boys, Sophomore Josiah Miller was back after a multiweek layoff and won both the 100 and 200 meter dash. Hunt was just behind him in the 100 and Jason Curles was 2nd in the 200. The other top 10 finisher in the 100 was Curles. In the 200, Justin Everett finished 4th and Derrick Clarit 6th.

OH wins in the sprints continued as Matt Bolte won the 400 by nearly 3 seconds. Conner Meyers was 5th and Chris Opdyke 6th.

Bolte also won the 800, this time by just over 2 seconds. Matt Reith was 4th Josh Crebbin 8th and Meyer 9th. Meyer set new PRs in both events with a 56.14 in the 400 and 2:18.10 in the 800. Crebbin's 2:17.32 was also a PR.

Crebbin also went on to PR in the 1600 and finished 8th. Thomas Honeycutt was the top OH finisher in 5th. Nate Miller was 6th and Lucas Salmons 10th.

Salmons and Miller were the only Wildcat entrants in the 3200. Miller was 4th and Salmons 6th.

Josh Sayre was the lone OHHS runner in both the 110 and 300 hurdles. He finished 8th in the 110 but set a PR of 17.93 and he was 3rd in the 300.

Oak Harbor won both relay races. Donovan Hunt, Jason Curles, Justin Everett and Josiah Miller combined in the 4x100 for a time of 44.71, nearly a second in front of 2nd place Arlington. In the 4x400 it was Bolte, Opdyke, Sayre and Curles across the line first in 3:40.10. The OH "B" relay comprised of Honeycutt, Meyer, Reith and Salmons finished 5th in 4:05.77.

Oak Harbor had difficulty placing in any of the field events with the exception of the long and triple jumps where Hunt finished first in both. Clarit was 3rd in the long jump, Josh Higbee was 7th and freshman Spencer Matthews 10th. In the triple jump, Josiah Miller was 7th, Cody Hernkind 8th, Clarit 9th and Dustyn Bull 10th.

In the other field events, Javon Payne was 6th and Jeremy Foster 7th in the shot put for the only top 10 OH finishes.

Robert Beadles threw for a season-best 102-4 in the discus to take 8th and Austin Church was 10th.

Javon set a PR in the javelin of 119-8 - a 16 foot PR for 9th place, but nobody could compete against Arlington who had a thrower who threw just 22 inches short of 200 feet.

Sam Schultz was 4th in the high jump with a jump of 5-4.

Saturday the team traveled to South Whidbey High School for the annual Westling Invite. The meet featured 12 varsity teams from both WESCO and the Seattle area as well as Coupeville and host South Whidbey. The boys finished in a respectable 4th place with 64 points behind Marysville, Mariner and Mountlake Terrace. The girls accumulated 184 points and captured 1st place over MP with 135 points.

The Wildcat boys 4th place finish was even more impressive as the boys won only 1 event all day - Matt Bolte set a PR by winning the 400 in 52.10. Sophomore Conner Meyer set his 2nd PR of the week in the 400, lowering his time mto 56.07. Bolte also finished 4th in the 800, which was won by Coupeville's Tyler King who runs on the OHHS Cross Country team in the fall.

In the 1600, Matt Reith set a PR of 4:43.2 for 5th place and Thomas Honeycut broke the 5:00 barrier for the first time, turning in a 4:59.70 performace and capturing 5th place.

Sophomore Justin Everett gave the pole vault a shot at the Invite, just his 2nd time trying it and cleared 9-0 as did Josh McVey.

The girls won a total of 7 events, finished 1-2 in the 100 meter dash and finished 2-3-4 in the javelin.

In the 100 it was Naomi Walker first with Shantae Young just .12 seconds behind. Walker also took the 200.

In distance races, Adrianna Royal won the 800 and was 2nd in the 1600 while Abby Leete won the 3200.

Allison Duvenez was 3rd in the 100 hurdles and won the 300 hurdles.

Normally an automatic winner, the girls 4x100 relay team apparently had a problem with a handoff and was disqualified. The 4x200 relay and 4x400 relay teams each finished 2nd. This meet also featured a 4x800 relay, won by an Oak Harbor team of Abby Leete, Hannah Bressler, Addy Royal and Jember Jansen.

In field events, Shantae Young took the long jump but finished 2nd in the triple jump by just 1.5 inches.

Ciera Wiser took 3rd in the javelin by adding 13 feet to her previous best with a throw of 90-9. Yoshi was 2nd with 92.8 and Mowbray 4th with 89-6.

Next for the Wildcat track team is a JV/All-comer meet today, Monday at Stanwood HS then a varsity meet Thursday vs Marysville and Everett at Everett Stadium.

Girls Tennis - Wednesday and Friday

The OH girls varsity tennis team traveled to Lake Stevens on Wednesday and won yet again, their 3rd in a row. The match was a make-up of an earlier rained out match.

The difference was in single play. All 4 OH singles players won again, 4-3, with all the singles girls winning in straight sets and Laurin Rico blanking her opponent 6-0, 6-0.

At OHHS, Cassie Gianino won her match 6-2, 6-2, but it was the only scoring win for the Wildcats. Chelsey McKenzie did well in her first ever singles match, playing hard and keeping it close before losing 5-7, 5-7.

The only other OH win of the day was an extra doubles match where Erdylle Macapinlac and Corinne SHumate won 4-2.

Friday's JV results aren't yet available, but the varsity team won their 4th in a row, defeating Arlington on their home court 4-3. As is the pattern, all the single girls won, and won convincingly. Cady O'Dell won 6-0, 6-1, Erin Neilon 6-1, 6-1 and Laurin Rico 6-4, 6-1. Clarissa Abadesco had the only close single match, but won 6-4, 6-3.

In doubles, Alexa Holmly and Shannon Neilon lost the first set 0-6, recovered to win the second 6-3 then fell in the tiebreaker 5-7. in extra doubles matches, Darcy Fremd and Nicole McKenzie won 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.

The first middle school track meet of the year was held at Burlington-Edison High School this past Thursday and many Wildcat United team members turned in outstanding performances.

Boys Golf

The boys golf teams played a lot of gold this past week.

The JV golfers went first on April 19th against Marysville and Jackson HS. Greg Martin carded the low score for the Wildcats with a 59 over 12 holes. He was followed by Quinnton Wallace with 66, David Bunch 77, Jeremy Alonzo 83, Sean Kelley 86 and Keaton Dieter 95. As expected, the strong Jackson team won with a team score of 277. 4 of their golfers shot under 60 and their high scorer shot a 63.

Oak Harbor's team score was 371, just 5 strokes behind Marysville.

The next day the varsity team was at Cedarcrest Golf Course against Marysville and Cascade and played well. Judd Ford led Oak Harbor with a 78 over 18 holes and #5 Jim Nguyen had a great day, finishing 2nd for OH and 6th overall with an 81. Matt Fikse and Austin Fields each scored 84, Dan Klope was right behind with an 85 and Greg Martin an 86. OH finished with a total of 412, just 5 strokes behind MP and 26 strokes ahead of Cascade.

Thursday the varsity team had a home match at the Whidbey Golf & Country Club taking on Everett and Stanwood. Judd Ford had the low stroke count for the day, shooting a 71 over 18 holes, 11 strokes in front of the second place finisher! Matt Fikse shot an 85 to finish 6th overall and Austin Fields an 87 to finish 8th. Dan Klope and Jim Nguyen tied with 88 strokes and Greg Martin, moving up from JV to fill the 6th spot, shot a 101.

OH finished 1st in team scoring with 419 total. Stanwood shot 426 and Everett 459.

Softball 2010-04-20 vs Marysville

The Wildcat softball team hosted Marysville at the Hillcrest fields on Tuesday on a cold and cloudy day. The Tomahawks came into the game in 1st place and are undefeated in WESCO North play while the Wildcats are 2-4 in league.

The first half of the game was great for the Wildcats with the game tied 1-1 starting the 5th inning with Emily Hunt pitching. Whitney Osborn took over in the 5th and although she pitched well, a number of errors on the field resulted in 6 Tommie runs. Kasie Brown got both OH hits, a double that scored the Wildcats' only run and a single.

On the JV field, MP was knocking the ball all over the place and OH just couldn't seem to find the handle and lost by over 10 runs.

Baseball 2010-04-20 vs Monroe

On a cool, cloudy, but dry day, the OHHS varsity baseball team took on the Monroe Bearcats at the OH field.

Things were looking good in early in the game as OH knocked home 3 runs to take a 3-1 lead, but errors by the Wildcats proved fatal as Monroe came back to win 6-5.

Jay Stout took the loss which forced OH into a 3-way tie for 3rd place in the WESCO North with Monroe and Arlington.

Thursday's game against Cascade was rained out and will be made up Friday at Cascade in a double-header starting at 2pm.

OHHS Girls Basketball coach McLeod resigns

OHHS head varsity girls basketball coach Brett McLeod resigned his position last week.

For those inside the program is was a disappointment but not unexpected. Coach McLeod had a rough couple of years, losing not just one, but two infants.

Also, freshman Coach Todd Showalter also decided he needed a break from basketball.

Both men have been in the program since 2002.

Coach Fred Burleson will remain as the JV coach.

Thanks for all your hard work and sacrifice for most of the last decade, Todd & Brett. You'll be missed.

Girls Tennis 2010-04-19 vs Monroe

The girls Tennis team won again, convincingly, over visiting Monroe on Monday, April 19th. The 4 singles players - Cady O'Dell, Erin Neilon, Laurin Rico and Clarissa Abadesco all won their matches easily to seal the win. In doubles, the sister team of Darcy and Jennifer Fremd won the first set 7-5, lost the second 4-6, the squeaked out a close 10-8 tiebreaker win to give OH a 5-2 victory.

OH won all of the extra matches. Laurin Rico & Clarissa Abadesco won 8-0, Micole McKenzie and Joyce Abides won 8-4 and Jennifer Bowers & Molly Van Dam won 8-6.

At Monroe, the score was reversed, with Monroe winning 5-2. Coach Brown commented that the match was fairly competitive throughout and at one time the JV team was on the verge of pulling out the win.

1st singles Cassie Gianino won her first set 6-2 but had to go to tiebreaker to win the second 7-6(3). Kelli Travenetti also went to tiebreaker in the first set and to win the match. She won 6-7(1), 6-3, (10-3). The JV girls won two of the extra matches, with the pairs of Tatum Edwards and Travenetti and Stephanie Milliron & Ashley Johnston each winning by identical 8-6 scores.

Boys soccer 2010-04-16 vs Lake Stevens

The Wildcat varsity soccer team put a big scare into 8-1 and 1st place Lake Stevens last Friday at Wildcat Memorial Stadium.

With 10 minutes left to play in the game, Oak Harbor was down by just one goal, 3-2, and was aggressively playing the ball, hoping for one more. What happened is that a Viking player broke free and was able to kick the ball into the net to make it 4-2. What hurt most was that the score after the kick should have been 2-2 and heading towards overtime. Earlier in the game, Oak Harbor had knocked the ball into their own goal on 2 occasions to give LS the extra points it needed for the win.

The JV team had a hard time dealing with the talented Vikings, falling 7-1.

Catchin up with the OHHS track team

The OHHS track team has been busy and successful these past two weeks.

After the spring break, the varsity team traveled down to Everett for a meet at Mariner High School. If you all remember, it was the day of the storm that produced some 50 mph gusts here on Whidbey Island. As a result, there weren't a lot of new personal records set that day.

There were a lot of wins by Oak Harbor athletes, though.

Going with the girls first, Wildcat women captured 5 of the top 7 places in the 100, 4 of the top 5 in the 200, the top 3 in the 400 and the top 5 in the 800, javelin and long jump and overall won every event except for one, and in that event got 2nd place. When it was all over, the OH girls dominated with 123 points. Mariner was 2nd with 36 and Meadowdale 26.

OH winners were - Naomi Walker (100, 200), Maura McKole (400), Addy Royal (800, 1600), Abby Leete (3200), Allison Duvenez (100 and 300 hurdles), Amanda Alvarado (shot put), Nicki Mowbray (javelin and high jump) and Shantae Young (long and triple jumps). The winning 4x100 relay team was made up of Walker, Young, Christina Alexander and Janessa Ramos, the 4x200 team featured Duvenez, McKole, Katelyn Bristow and Janelle Yoshimoto. In the 4x400 race it was McKole, Duvenez, Royal and Leete.

While the boys weren't quite a successful, they did get a total of four 1st place finishes. Donovan Hunt, back from an injury, won the 100 and long jump, Matt Bolte the 400, and Derrick Clarit the triple jump. There were seven 2nd place finishes as well - Jason Curles in the 200, Chris Opdyke in the 400, Javon Payne in shot put, Clarit in long jump and Andy Haag in triple jump. The 4x100 relay team (Hunt, Curles, Aaron Boesch and Justin Everett) and 4x400 team (Opdyle, Curles, Bolte and Josh Sayre) each earned 2nd place finishes.

On Monday a JV/All-comers meet was held at Snohomish HS. Complete results aren't available at athletic.net (not all the participating school posted results), but the Wildcats did well. On the boys side, Jalen Williams is at the top of the 200m JV race with a time of 25.6 and Josh Crebbin is at the top of the JV 1600m results with a 5:32 (his personal best). In the JV long jump results, list has 7 Wildcats in a row, led by Spencer Matthews who jumped 16-2. Also on that list were Sam Collins, Ian Sinchak, Jalen Williams, Dustyn Bull, Jel Atienza and Brylle Baranda. Bull and Sinchak also are on the JV triple jump list, but that event was headed by Cody Hernkind.

The JV girls team is much smaller than the boys but also had several JV winners. Jalani Bobo topped the 200m, which was an OH sweep. She was followed by Jember Jansen, Ciera Wiser, Brianna Quinn, Chylan Bass, O'Jinae Welch, Melinda Kelly and Bet Riba. Jansen also picked up a win in the 400m dash and Emily Bain captured the 800m JV title. Danielle Teasley put her shot 24 feet 8 inches, winning the JV event and setting a new PR. Wiser threw her javelin 81-6 and Chylan Bass jumped 28-7.25 in the triple jump to post the best JV mark in those events.

On Thursday the 15th, on a absolutely beautiful day for track, OH hosted Snohomish and Lake Stevens at Wildcat Memorial Stadium. As a result there were 40 new personal records (PRs) set by OHHS athletes.

Going with the boys first, Donovan Hunt had to squeak out a win in the 100 meter dash, beating Lake Stevens' Tyler Reside by .01 second. Jason Curles was 3rd with a time of 12.0

Curles went on to earn 3rd place in the 2oo, and although they didn't finish in the top 10, Cody Hernkind, Noel Cheeseboro, Jeshaiah Davis and Ian Sinchak, along with Curles, all set new personal records in that event.

Matt Bolte won the 400, Chris Opdyke was 4th and 8th place Conner Meyer set a new PR.

Bolte also won the 800 with Meyer, Thomas Honeycutt and Lucas Salmons all finishing in the top 10 with new PRs.

John Kartenbach finished 7th in the 1600 and Honeycutt and Salmons set new PRs again.

Nate Miller was the only OH entrant in the 3200 meter run and finished 8th in 11:32.61

Josh Sayre was also the only entrant in the two hurdles races. He finished 5th in the 110 and 3rd in the 300, setting a PR in both.

The 4x100 relay team (Hunt, Curles, Cheeseboro and Derrick Clarit, and 4x400 relay team (Bolte, Curles, Sayre and Rashaad Smith) each finished in 2nd place.

The OH men throwers did OK. Javon Payne was the top OH shot putter, throwing his 12-lb shot 42-1, good enough for 5th place. Jeremy Foster threw 40-0 for 8th place and a PR and Robert Beadles had a PR with a throw of 33-6.

Zach Wallace finished in 12th place in the javelin with a throw of 98-3, but it was an improvement of over 13 feet from his previous PR!

In addition to the sprinters, the jumpers were also a bright spot on the team as Donovan Hunt won both the long and triple jump and Sam Schultz earned 2nd in the high jump. Schultz set a new PR of 5-6 and Derrick Clarit set a new PR in the triple jump of 39-2.5.

For the girls, it was another case of Oak Harbor domination. The girls earned 81 points to The Vikings' 55 and Panthers' 53.

Naomi Walker, Shantae Young and Janessa Ramos finished 1-2-3 in the 100 with Christina Alexander and Jalani Bobo not far behind in 5th and 8th. Walker also went on to win the 200 with a PR of 25.82 with Ramos in 3rd and Bobo in 7th.

Addy Royal again won both her events, the 800 and 1600, setting a new PR in the 1600. Running with her in both events and setting PRs as well were Hannah Kagey and Taylor VonGrey.

Abby Leete completed the near-sweep of the running events by winning the 3200 run in 11:49.14, followed by Emily Bain in 6th.

In the hurdles races, Allison Duvenez finished 3rd in the 100 and 2nd in the 300. Also in both races were Raeanna Wynne, Megan Duhrkopf and Shannon Wolfe who each set PRs in both races.

The 4x100 relay was the only relay race won by the Wildcats. The team of Young, Ramos, Alexander and Walker was untouchable, winning by over 2 seconds. The 4x200 team of Duvenez, Bobo, Ramos and Janelle Yoshimoto earned 3rd place as did the 4x400 team of Royal, Leete, Duvenez and Jessica Denmon.

The throwers won 2 of their 3 events, with Amanda Alvarado winning the shot put and Yoshi winning the javelin. Dominique Jackson (DJ) was the top OH finisher in the discus, finishing 4th with a toss of 87-9.

Jumpers won all 3 events they were entered in and went 1-2 in the long and triple jumps. Nicki Mowbray set a new PR of 4-10 on her way to victory in the high jump and Katelyn Bristow came in 4th at 4-4. Young and Walker were 1-2 in the long jump where Shantae jumped 18-3.5 for a new PR. Walker, in 2nd, jumped 16-2. Young also won the triple jump (35-4.5) but it was Mowbray in 2nd with a PR of 32-2. There were no OH entrants in the pole vault.

The Wildcat track team is at home again this Thursday, April 22nd against Arlington and Monroe. Admission is free and the concession stand will be open with lots of hot chocolate.

Boys golf

There hasn't been much on Boys Golf as results haven't been available and there haven't been matches at home.

That will change this week as the JV boys are at WGCC on Monday and the varsity boys on Thursday.

The Oak Harbor Sports Report will be at both events to get some photos and results.

In the meantime, HERE are some photos of some of the JV and varsity team members warming up at WGCC.

Girls tennis 4-14 vs Cascade and 4-16 vs Snohomish

The varsity girls tennis team split the week, losing at Cascade then winning at home against a strong Snohomish team.

At Cascade on Wednesday, junior Cady O'Dell lost a tough match, 1-6, 6-4, 1-6 but seniors Erin Neilon and Laurin Rico won their matches as did junior Clarissa Abadesco. In doubles action the 2nd doubles team of Shannon Neilon and Alexa Holmly fought hard in their first set before falling 5-7 and lost their 2nd set. 1st and 3rd doubles also lost, but coach Horace Mells said that "the doubles have improved their play".

Things were different on Friday as 1st singles O'Dell demolished her opponent 6-0, 6-1. Neilon, Rico and Abadesco also had little problems dispatching their opponents guaranteeing the team win.

Although none of the doubles teams were able to get a win on Friday, Coach Mells said the they are still improving.

The JV girls didn't have a good week, winning only one scoring match day and 3 over the two events.

At home against Cascade on Wednesday after over two weeks off, the JV girls played well in their first set, winning 4 of 6. Cascade then woke up and won most of the rest of the sets to secure a 6-1 win in scoring matches.

At 1st singles, Kelli Travenetti played hard in her 7-5, 6-3 win (the "match of the day", according to Coach Brown) as did Kristen Shiels at 2nd singles. She won the first 7-5, lost the second 5-7, the lost a heartbreaking tiebreaker 9-11.

At 4th singles, Kim Smith lost 2-6 in the first then dominated 6-0 in the second before falling in the tiebreaker.

The 2nd doubles team of Rachelle Muzones and Chelsey McKenzie got pounded in their first set 0-6, but came back to win the second 6-3 to force a tiebreaker. The tiebreaker was long and close, but in the end Cascade was able to win 13-11 to capture the match.

The other OH winner was the doubles team of Molly Murdock and Tatum Edwards in extra match play. They won easily, 8-3.

On Friday the JV Wildcats traveled to Snohomish where the Panthers dominated every aspect of the game. Coach Brown singled out Cassia Gianova at 1st singles for her effort. Although Cassie went down 1-6, 3-6, Coach Brown said that her opponent was an exceptional player and Cassie put forth a "tremendous effort" in her match.

Oak Harbor's lone win came in 3rd doubles when Rachelle Muzones and Chelsey McKenzie fought their way through 3 tiebreakers 7-6(2), 6-7(5), 11-9 to capture the match.

This coming week the Varsity team is at home Monday against Monroe while JV is at home Wednesday against Lake Stevens and Friday against Arlington.

Softball 2010-04-13 vs Arlington

The games started out with just a heavy overcast, but by the time it was over everyone at the games were soaking after a steady rain started early in the games.

Over on the JV field, the team just couldn't get anything going on either offense or defense and wound up losing badly.

Things weren't much better on the varsity field, but there were some highlights. One in particular was a shot by Shawna Steele that cleared the left-center fence for a solo home run, giving OH their second run of the game. It, along with the 3 others scored by the Wildcats wasn't enough as the girls fell 16-4.

Whidbey Island Running Club - 2010 Tulip Run

The Whidbey Island Running Club participated in the annual Tulip Run race at the Skagit Regional Airport on Saturday the 10th.

A couple dozen WIRC runners participated in the event, which consisted of two different races.

The first, a 2-mile fun run had 7 Whidbey Runners and produced one division winner and 2 second-place finishers out of several hundred runners. Complete results are not yet posted, but will be available HERE at the Skagit Runners website.

The other race was a 5-mile run with nearly 700 finishers. WIRC had 4 age-group winners in that race, one of them OHHS runner Christina Wicker, with two more finishing in 2nd place, among them 8th grader Olivia Meyer. 5-mile race results are complete and can be found by clicking HERE.

Softball 2010-04-09 vs Lake Stevens

The softball teams were in action last Friday against the Lake Stevens Vikings. The varsity team was hammered early as Lake Stevens took a 5-0 first inning lead and scored once more to win 6-0.

The JV game started in a similar fashion, with the Vikings knocking the ball all over the place. Even after spotting a big lead, the JV team made it exciting at the end. Lake Stevens was holding onto a 7-5 lead but the Wildcats had just loaded the bases, putting the winning run at first with two outs. Unfortunately, the final batter grounded out to the pitcher to end the game. Coach Strain praised pitcher Sam Zimmerman who struck out 4 batters and allowed only one walk.

The next home game for the softball teams is today, Tuesday, at the Hillcrest Fields.

Girls Golf

The JV girls golf team had a challenging week of play at the Whidbey Golf & Country Club this past week.

Thursday's match was played as of one of the strongest windstorms the island saw this year was just starting, and as a result, no individual results were kept and the girls didn't play from the tee box but started on the fairways.

Monday's match was in much calmer weather, but although it started out just cloudy, it ended in a light rain.

Since there were only 3 JV golfers available for Monday's match, varsity player Ashley Johnson stepped in to fill the 4th spot.

Baseball update

It was a busy, but overall successful week on the diamond for the Oak Harbor baseball teams.

Last week the JV team played against Everett, Stanwood and Everett again, winning one of the games.

vs Everett, Jack Richter hit a solo home run and Grant Schroeder had a single RBI, but it wasn't enough at the Wildcats lost that game 19-2.

The boys beat Stanwood 14-4, with Peter Franssen going 1-1 with a home run and reached base 3 times (walked and hit by pitch).

Gabe Clark was 2-3 with a three-run triple.
Jack Richter was 2-4 with two singles.  He also struck out 6, allowed 4 runs, and got the win.
Dimitri Munoz struck out 3 of the four hitters he faced in the top of the 6th.

The rematch against Everett was better, but not good enough as the JV team lost 9-4
Andrew Snavely was 2-4 with two singles.
Peter Franssen was also 2-4 with a run scored.
Of the second Everett game, Coach Day said "
Our pitchers struggled to throw strikes, walking 3 and allowing 10 hits.

In varsity action:

The week started with a makeup of a rain-delayed game against Everett, and after a slow start, the OH bats came alive in the 5th inning when the Wildcats scored 3 runs and put the game away with 6 more in the final inning.  Even with all the scoring, only senior Nate Young had more than one hit, going 2-4 and scoring twice.

On Wednesday the 7th, OH was able to sneak by Stanwood 5-4.  The Cats were down 1-0 going into the 6th inning then were able to score all 5 runs - on just one hit.  Stanwood hit two OH batters and walked two more.  A bad throw by a fielder and a wild pitch allowed the Wildcat runs to score.  The 5 runs were just enough as Stanwood scored 2 in the bottom of the inning and scored one more in the 7th before the rally was stopped.  Jay Stout pitched 5 2/3 innings, striking out 5 batters and giving up 3 hits.

On Thursday the team was back in action with the 2nd game against Everett.  While OH again seemed to have little problems getting runs across the plate, this time Everett showed some offense as well.  OH scored 3 in the 1st inning and another in the 2nd but Everett scored 5 of their own in the 2nd to take the lead.  OH regained the lead and led 13-7 going into the bottom of the final inning.  Everett scored 4 runs and had the tying run on base before OH reliever Ryan Byrne came in to earn his 4th save of the season.  Kian Mebane, Wade Burns and Sam Wolfe all got 2 hits each in the game.

Hoping to complete a sweep of the week's games, the Wildcats hosted Stanwood on a sunny Friday afternoon.  OH scored in the first inning and added three more in the 2nd and 3rd to take a 4-2 lead.  The Wildcats continued to score until the 6th inning when Brad Farnum hit a double to score Sam Glavin and Yale Rosen, ending the game under the 10-run rule.

The 4-game winning streak by the varsity team moved them from last place in the WESCO North into 3rd place and into the playoff hunt.

Boys soccer 2010-04-06 vs Arlington

After a nice spring break the boys soccer team was back in action Tuesday against Arlington.

Even though there were no offensive goals scored by Oak Harbor, the final of the JV game was 4-1. Early in the 1st half, Arlington passed the ball back to their goalkeeper who was not ready for the pass and watched the ball roll by him and into the net for an Oak Harbor goal.

The varsity score was similar but Arlington didn't score against themselves in that game, leaving the final at 4-0.

Track 2010-03-24 at OHHS

The first home track meet of the season was held at Oak Harbor High School Wednesday afternoon. The girls won their 18-event side of the meet, scoring 88.5 points to Stanwood's 75.5 and Cascade's 24. Things were reversed on the boys side as Cascade and Stanwood dominated. Cascade was on top with 72 points, just .5 ahead of Stanwood. Oak Harbor scored 36.5.

As would be expected early in the season, there were many personal bests set at the meet, and some were very impressive.

In the 100 meter dash, senior Jason Curles finished 2nd in 11.8 seconds, .3 seconds faster than is previous best. Jason also cut .65 seconds off his 200 meter time, finishing 3rd.

Although he didn't set a PR, Chris Opdyke won a close 400 meter dash, finishing just .07 seconds better than 2nd place.

Senior Matt Bolte dominated the 800 meter run, finishing in a time of 2:00.78, nearly 10 seconds better than his best time from 2009 and nearly 8 seconds in front of the 2nd place runner. Connor Meyer finished in 7th but cut his time by 16 seconds and all the other OH runners also set PRs - Crebbin, Lucas Salmons, Thomas Honeycutt and Nate Miller.

Other PRs for the boys were set by Aaron Boesch in the 100, Jalen Williams and Noel Cheeseboro in the 200, Josh Crebbin and Mike Kincy in the 400. In the 1600, John Kartenbach, Honeycutt and Salmons all PR'd.

In field events, Terry Rawls and Austin Church both set new records in the shot put, with Rawls improving by over 7 feet to 38-6 and Dakota Sinchak and Zach Wallace both improved by over 9 feet in the javelin.

The jumpers also showed improvement. Derrick Clarit finished 3rd in the long jump while Andy Haag, Sam Schultz and Spencer Matthews all improved. Haag and Andrew Hernkind set PRs in the triple jump.

The girls had several 1-2-3 finishes on the day let by senior sprinter/jumper Shantae Young who won 3 individual events and was in the winning 4x100 relay.

In the 100 it was freshman Naomi Walker and Christina Alexander behind Young and Janessa Ramos finished 4th. Walker also went on to win the 200 meter dash.

Addy Royal finished 1st in the 800 meter run and finished 2nd in the 1600. Behind Royal in the 800 were Hannah Bressler, Christina Wicker and Bri Petersen, all with new PRs.

Junior Allison Duvenez continued her dominance in the hurdles races, winning both the 100 and 300m races. She won the 100 by nearly a second and the 300 by over 3 seconds.

In addition to winning the 4x100 relay, Oak Harbor also won the 4x400 relay. It was quite a race Maura McKole catching up to the Stanwood runner near the end of her lap then Adrianna Royal took the lead on the final turn.

PRs were set in running events by Walker in the 100 and Janelle Yoshimoto in the 200. In the 800, 3 of the 4 girls set PRs - Hannah Bressler and Bri Peterson improved their times by 6 seconds, and Christina Wicker cut a second of her best. Freshman Joem Evangelista cut .6 seconds off her 100 hurdles time, lowering it to 19.01.

In field events, Wildcat women were 1-2-3 in both the long jump and triple jump. Young won both events with PRs and in the long jump was followed by Walker and Janelle Yoshimoto. In the triple jump it was Nicki Mowbray and Allison Bristow in 2nd and 3rd with freshman Chylan Bass in 4th.

Amanda Alvarado finished 3rd in the shot put and Mowbray 1st in the high jump - she beat her nearest opponent by 4 inches - quite a bit for high school jumping! Dominique Jackson (DJ to her friends) finished 2nd in the discus.

In addition to her 3rd place finish, Alvarado set a PR with a put of 32-9. Freshman Danielle Teasley also set a PR at 24-1. DJ threw the discus 93 feet - 10 feet further than her previous best and Elizabeth Adkins and Carlie Olson added 5 feet to their PRs.

In the Javelin, freshman Ciera Wiser finished in 8th place but was ecstatic with her effort. She threw 87-6, which is EIGHTEEN FEET further than her throw last week! Hers wasn't the only double-digit improvement as Mowbray threw 92-10 to add 13-3 to her PR. Nikita Ford and Tatiana Cumming also set PRs in the javelin.

Girls basketball 2010-03-22 Spring League

The OHHS girls basketball team started their spring league season at Skagit Valley College in Mt. Vernon last Monday.

While there are two teams, a "JV" and a "Varsity", both teams are made up of the same girls, and all are current freshmen with the exception of 3 sophomores and one 8th grader.

The first game, in the JV bracket, was against South Langley in Canada. It was a close game and was tied several times late, but S. Langley was able to get one extra point to win 34-33.

The 2nd game, in the varsity bracket, was against Mt. Baker HS and the Wildcat girls just couldn't seem to get the ball in the basket. It was 17-1 at the half and wound up losing 31-4.

Girls tennis 2010-03-22 vs Stanwood

On Monday the 22nd, the OHHS Tennis teams faced WESCO powerhouse Stanwood with the JV at home and the varsity away.

At Stanwood it was a 6-1 slaughter with Erin Neilon at 2nd singles the only OH winner, and it took her 3 sets before winning 4-6, 6-4, 6-4. Clarissa Abadesco at 4th singles also went 3 sets but lost 5-7, 6-1, 2-6.

At OHHS, the JV girls performed admirably. While the singles players were 2-2 for the day, the doubles players stepped up and won all their matches for a 5-2 team win.

In singles, the winners were Kelli Travenetti (6-2, 6-2) and Kim Smith (6-0, 6-2). While Cassie Gianino and Kristen Shiels didn't win, the both went into tiebreaker. Cassie's score was 6-4, 3-6 (5-10) and Kristen was 6-3, 4-6 (8-10).

In doubles, the #1 team of Ashley Leslie and Kim Kerley won 6-2, 6-2, #2 Juliana Meenan/Jordan Trask win 6-2, 6-2 and # Rachelle Muzones/Chelsy McKenzie won in a tiebreaker 6-2, 2-6 (10-7)

In the extra matches, OH won 4 of 5. Tatum Edwards & Jenny Landingin won 8-4, Kelli Travenetti and Kristine Escartin won 8-4, Jessica Travenetti and Kyla McKinney won 8-6 and Meenan/Trask won their 2nd match of the day 8-1.

JV Track 2010-03-22 at Marysville

The OHHS Track team opened their league season with a JV/All-comer's meet at Marysville on Monday. At the meet were athletes from Arlington, Cascade, Lake Stevens, Snohomish, Stanwood, Everett, host Maryville and, of course, Oak Harbor.

The OH team had a mix of grades. While the majority of participants were freshmen and sophomores, there were a few juniors and seniors as well, mostly newcomers to the track team.

Even though this was a "JV" meet, many performances approached and even beat varsity performances from last week's South Whidbey Jamboree.

Freshman Josh Crebbin had an outstanding day, posting a 59.6 in the 400m dash and a 2:28 in the 800. For the girls, freshman Jalani Bobo was just .9 seconds behind the fastest varsity time posted at the Jamboree with a 30.0 flat in the 200 meter dash.

The first full varsity meet of the season is Wednesday the 24th on the OHHS track. Admission is free.

New Scholarship Opportunity

Starting this year, the Oak Harbor Sports Report is sponsoring a scholarship in the amount of $500.

This scholarship is intended to reward those athletes who showed a commitment to OHHS Athletics and at the same time maintained high academic standards.

The recipient must have attended OHHS for all four years of high school and completed at least two seasons in a sport for each of those four years. You need not have won a letter or started, you just had to have completed the full season.

You must have a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA, 3.5 is better.

You must submit a 500 word essay entitled "How Participating in Athletics Has Made Me A Better Person".

5 finalists will be selected based on the application, GPA and essay and will be contacted for a personal interview.

Since it's late in the school year, for this year only the deadline for submission of the application and essay will be May 1st.

Letters of recommendation from teachers and/or coaches are not required but may help.

Softball 2010-03-19 vs Squalicum

The Oak Harbor varsity softball team won its first game of the year with a nice 8-6 win over the visiting Squalicum Storm.

Winning pitcher Whitney Osborn pitched the first 3 innings and recorded 5 strikeouts and only 1 base on balls. Reliever Emily Hunt got five Ks of her own. Each pitcher allowed 3 runs but only one was an earned run.

Ari Araceley, Osborn and Morgan Young each got 2 hits. M. Fakkema was 1-for-3 but recorded 2 RBIs.

Coach Weikle had a lot of good things to say about her girls, especially senior pitcher Whitney Osborn. Coach used words like "aggressive" and "confident" to describe her play.

Freshman Morgan Young in the outfield also impressed. Her great throw from right field to 3rd base stopped all the Storm runners in their tracks.

JV results aren't available, but the OH batters were hitting the ball all over the field early in the game.

Baseball 2010-03-19 Varsity vs Mt. Vernon

Hosting the Mt. Vernon Bulldogs on a beautiful, warm Friday afternoon, it was looking like another day of little offense for the Wildcats as the game was scoreless until the Bulldogs scored a run in the 5th inning.

Oak Harbor answered in the bottom of the inning but got only 1 run to tie it up. Mt. Vernon was held scoreless in the 6th, then things got on track for the Wildcats. Brad Farnum started it off with a double, Yale Rosen walked, then Josh Evans hit his own double to bring Farnum home and put Rosen on third. Ben Cardinal brought Rosen home with a single then the Wildcats hit into a double play to end the inning but led 3-1.

In the top of the 7th Mt. Vernon could get only one man on base and a 6-3 put out ended the game.

Boys Soccer 2010-03-18 vs Stanwood

The JV and Varsity soccer teams each opened their 2010 season with identical 5-0 losses to the Stanwood Spartans.

The JV game was not out of hand until very late in the game. Late in the 2nd half it was 2-0 in favor of Stanwood, but a hand ball was called on OH in the box, setting up a penalty kick for Stanwood that went it. After that the air seemed to go out of the Wildcats and Stanwood knocked in two more goals.

In the varsity game, it was all OH in the first half in every place except the scoreboard. The Wildcats dominated early, getting several shots on the goal but the Stanwood goalkeeper was seemingly everywhere to stop then before going in. On the other end, Stanwood got a couple of lucky breaks and was able to scoot balls into the Wildcat net and added 3 more before the end of the game.

Middle School Girls Basketball 2010-03-18 OHMS at NWMS

The final OHMS vs NWMS girls basketball game was held Thursday evening at NWMS and again the Panthers emerged victorious.

In the 7^th grade game Oak Harbor jumped out to an early 10-4 lead and North Whidbey just couldn’t get things going and get back in the game. The Cougars did keep things respectable but finished on the wrong end of the 37-20 score. Aubrey Lock led NWMS in scoring with 10 points while Natalie McVey and Jessica Hollins each added 4 and Hayley Lundstrom ended the game with 2 points. For the Panthers, Nalani Gabbert stood out with 17 points, 9 in the 2^nd quarter alone. Brook Peplinski added 8 of her own and McKinley Kellogg 4. Michelle Braegger, Kendalyn Wersland, Andreanna Turner and Sierra Southwick each scored 2 points.

The 8^th grade was similar, although the score was tied 6-6 at the end of the 1^st. OHMS corrected that by going on a 10-4 run in the 2^nd to finish the half leading 16-10. The Panthers stepped up their aggressive defense in the 3^rd, holding NW to just 2 points. When the dust settled it was OHMS 36, NWMS 16. For the Panthers, it was Annie Leete on top with 20 points. Nina Coleman and Sam Hawkins scored 4 each and Zana Harrison and KC Winfield scored 2 each. The leading scorer for the Cougars was Melanie Callaway with 8 points. Breanna Roderos scored 4 and Natalie Fiallos and Caterina Amsler a pair each.

That game ended the middle school winter sports seasons, and eyes will now turn to the upcoming track season.

Girls tennis 3/17 adn 3/19 vs Lake Stevens and Arlington

The girls tennis teams are busy, playing 3 matches per week, and this week was no different.

Wednesday's match was against Lake Stevens, with the varsity girls at home and the JV away.

While Cady O'Dell and Erin Neilon at 1st and 2nd singles had a fairly easy time, winnign 6-2, 6-3 and 6-0, 6-0 respectively, 3rd and 4th single had a harder time. At 3rd, junior Clarissa Abadesco won her first set 6-3 but lost the next two by 6-4 scores. Jordan Faralan at 4th went the opposite way, dropping her first 6-4 then winning the next two 6-3, 6-3.

Doubles was all Lake Stevens with the exception of Shannon Neilon and Joyce Abides at 3rd who went 3 long sets before falling 7-5, 2-6, 3-6.

The two school split the extra matches, with Darcy Fremd and Kelli Travenetti losing by a very close 8-6 and Nicole McKenzie and Molly Van Dam winning by an equally close 9-7 score.

Coach Mells said it was a close contest that could have gone either way and Erin Neilon was "most impressive".

At the JV match, it was all Lake Stevens as OH was able to win only a single match. Cassie Gianino lost her first set 1-6, dominated the second 6-1 and pulled out a 10-5 win in the 3rd. Coach Brown said that 1st and 2nd doubles (Ashley Leslie/Kim Kerley and Juliana Meenan/Jordan Trask) gave full measure before going down by identical 4-6, 5-7 scores.

On Friday, March 19th the varsity was again at home against Arlington while the JV was on the road at the Eagles' home court.

As with Lake Stevens, one singles match proved the difference. The top 3, O'Dell, Neilon and Laurin Rico, won their matches easily. Abadesco, now at 4th singles, played a long match and wound up falling in straight sets 7-5, 6-2. Arlington won all three scoring doubles matches to win 4-3.

At Arlington, the JV girls played some tough tennis. Arlington won the scoring matches 5-2, but it wasn't easy for them. Cassie Gianino and Kelli Travenetti at 1st and 2nd singles both won but had to go to an extra set for the win. Cassie won 4-6, 6-4 (10-7) while Kelli won 1-6, 6-2, (10-6).

OH picked up some more wins in the extra matches, getting 6 wins to Arlington's 4. Winners were A. Leslie/K. Kerley 8-5, C. Espiritu/K. Escartin 8-8(7-5), J. Meenan/A. Haynes 8-5, M. Murdock/T. Edwards 8-5, E. Macapinlac/C. Shumate 8-5 and K. Travenetti/K. Shiels 8-2.

JV Baseball 2010-03-17

The OHHS JV baseball team opened their home season with a game against the Sedro-Woolley Cubs on March 17th and came away victors.

It didn’t start out well for the Wildcats as the team gave up 4 runs in the 1^st inning. OH was able to get one run across the plate in the bottom of the inning to make it 4-1. The Wildcats knocked a pair of hits in the 2^nd resulting in two runs for OHHS. Jackson walked, then hits by Cameron and Kusnick helped drive in the runs by Jackson and Cameron. Sedro also scored to make the score 5-3 at the end of the 2^nd.

In the 3^rd, the Cubs were held scoreless (and would remain that way until the 7^th) while Glavick scored to make it a 1-run game. Oak Harbor tied the game in the 5^th when Mertins scored then took a 6-5 lead in the 6^th on Cameron’s 2^nd run of the game after a double by Kusnick and a single by Munoz.

Sedro scored in the top of the 7^th to tie the game to tie the game at 6 and the Wildcats were not able to score in the bottom of the inning. In the extra-inning 8^th the Cubs were 3 up and 3 down and in the bottom of the inning, Cameron scored once more after reaching base on an error by the SW 3^rd baseman. A sacrifice fly by Kusnick and error on the Cub shortstop allowed Cameron to score and end the game in a 7-6 Oak Harbor victory.

Girls Golf 2010-03-16 at Gallery Golf Course

The OHHS Girls Golf team opened the season with the Gallery Shootout at Oak Harbor's Gallery Golf Course. It was cool and dry for the most part, but very windy on the course.

Ashley Johnson shot a 97 to lead the Wildcats to a 3rd place finish. Coming in behind Oak Harbor were WESCO opponents Marysville, Lake Stevens and Monroe.

Melany Cone shot a 102, Simone Hamilton 107, Sasha Olson 118, Mara Cortez 126 and Millie Goebel 135 to finish the Wildcat scoring.

The low score for the day was Seo Hee Moon from Kamiak who shot a 76. The high score was a 165 shot by girls on two different teams.

Baseball 2010-03-15 Varsity vs Edmonds

The OHHS Varsity baseball team hosted their first home game of the season by playing the Edmonds-Woodway Warriors.

The Wildcats found themselves in a deep hole halfway through the game with E-W leading 12-0. In the bottom of the 4th, OH batters started getting some solid hits. Jay Stout went first with a single and he was followed by Kian Mebane, Brad Farnum, Gabe Clark and Nate Young. When EW got the 3rd out the Wildcats had scored 4 runs.

OH added 3 more runs in the 5th, again starting with a hit by Stout, this time a triple. Later, with the bases loaded, the Warriors walked Justin Counts and Pat Higbee to add two more to the Wildcat total.

Edmonds went on to add another 3 runs to their total and the Wildcats did not score any more as the game ended 15-7 in favor of E-W.

Girls Tennis 2010-03-15 vs Monroe

The OHHS Spring sports season (home edition) started off with a JV tennis match vs Monroe at the OHHS tennis courts. At the same time, the varsity team was at Monroe.

In the JV matches the Wildcats swept in singles, winning all four matches in straight sets. Coach Garry Brown was especially impressed by the play of Kristen Shields at 3rd singles who "destroyed her opponent" 6-1, 6-1. The JV girls added a win at 1st doubles (Ashley Leslie and Kim Kerley) to win the match 5-2. Leslie and Kerley went to a tiebreaker in the 2nd set to win 6-0, 7-6 (3). Monroe responded by sweeping the exhibition matches but OH got the match win.

The varsity results were quite similar. OH swept the singles matches for the 4-3 win. Both 1st and 2nd doubles went to 3 sets before Monroe ultimately prevailed. Coach Mells said that it was a close contest that could have gone either way. He gave credit to Clarissa Abadesco for pulling out a win in a hard-fought 3-set match.

The WIRC ran in the Sunset Loop Relay in Anacortes this past Saturday and did very well.

Middle School Wrestling 2010-03-12 at Mt. Baker MS

The Wildcat United wrestling team finished the regular season with a double dual meet at Mt. Baker Middle School going up against the host school and a combined LaConner/Concrete/Darrington team.

The Wildcats went first against Mt. Baker and dominated 52-25. In addition to 3 forfeits, the Wildcat boys pinned their opponent 4 times and won 7 matches overall.

Earning victory by pinfall were Chris Bertram, Gabe Eccleston, Jerry Rios and Devin Jensen. Roy Buch won with a 12-2 major decision. Jahleel Vester and Wiatt Charlesworth rounded out the Wildcat victories.

Results from the second set of matches, versus the La Conner/Darrington/Concrete team are not available.

Middle School Girls Basketball

Both OHMS and NWMS had home games this past week but unfortunately there wasn't much success.

NWMS faced off against Burlington on March 9th and let's just say that both games were all Burlington. On the plus side, there are some great photos from the 7th grade game posted HERE and from the 8th grade game posted HERE.

OHMS played Mt. Baker on March 11th. The 7th grade team lost and final results from the 8th grade game were not available. OHMS 7th grade photos are HERE and 8th grade photos are HERE.

There is a final OHMS vs NWMS game on March 18th at NWMS. 7th grade action starts at 3:45 and 8th grade at 5pm. FREE admission for everyone!

Middle School Girls Basketball 2010-03-08 OHMS @ NWMS

The Oak Harbor Middle School Panthers traveled across town Monday afternoon to North Whidbey Middle School for the 2nd of a series of 3 games this year.

In 7th grade action, the two teams played fairly even, with the Cougars scoring 2 and the Panthers getting 4. in the 2nd period OHMS came to life and poured in 10 points while holding NWMS to just 2 points to lead 14-4 at halftime. The Panthers scored another 11 in the 3rd to take a commanding 25-6 lead. In the final period it was OHMS that went scoreless and the Cougars scoring 6 to make the final 25-12 in favor of Oak Harbor.

Nalani Gabbert and Brook Peplinski led OHMS with 6 points each. Rebecca Pabona scored 4, Michelle Braegger 4, and Kayla Bushong, Kendalyn Wersland and Heather Anderson with 2 each.

For the Cougars it was Jessica Hollins and Hayley Lundstrom with 4 each while Aubrey Lock and Kayla Jones scored 2 each.

The 8th grade game went pretty much as expected. It's the Panther's year and OHMS scored early and scored often. It was 13-4 at teh end of the first and 19-6 at halftime. The game slowed down a bit in the 3rd with the Panthers scoring just 9 points and the Cougars 5, but in the final quarter OHMS poured in 14 points to win the game 42-15.

Kaitlyn Haley and Cassidy Gurich each scored 4 points for the Cougars, Chelsea Atkinson scored 3 and Lizzy Fry and Breanna Roderos each got 2 points.

For the Panthers it was Annie Leete with 16. Jamielee Estrella, Kyla Bernardo and Maddie Ching scored 4 each. Nina Coleman, Rebecca Schrum, KC Winfield, Angelica Brown, Sam Hawkins and Makenzi Schulle had 2 each.

MS Girls Basketball 2010-03-04 NWMS vs LaVenture

Mt. Vernon's LaVenture Middle School was the visiting team Thursday at North Whidbey Middle School for girls basketball game.

The 7th grade game was full of action, but little scoring. LaVenture was able to score 9 points and held the Cougars scoreless. NW got their first point on a rebound and score by Kayla Jones at the 5:47 mark in the 2nd period. Just over a minute later Natalie McVey scored as well but that was it for the first half. LaVenture only scored 4 in the 2nd period to lead 13-4 at the half. The two teams played even for the rest of the game, leaving LaVenture with a 22-12 victory. Hayley Lundstrom scored twice in the 2nd half to lead the team in scoring with 4 points. McVey, Jones, Jessica Hollins and Aubrey Lock each scored 2 points.

It was a slow start as well for the 8th graders. At the end of the first period the score was 3-2 in favor of the Cougars, with all 3 points coming off of Chelsea Atkinson free throws. LaVenture hit a pair of 3-pointers in the 2nd period and held NW to just one field goal to lead 8-5 at the half. Atkinson finally got going in the 3rd period, scoring 10 points to account for all of the NWMS scoring in the period. During that time the defense held LaVenture to just 2 points. In the 4th, LaVenture was able to put up 9 points, but behind 7 made free throws by Chelsea, the Cougars were able to hold on for a 27-19 win - their first of the season.

MS Basketball 2010-03-03 OHMS vs Anacortes

The Anacortes Seahawks traveled to OHMS for a pair of middle school girls basketball games on March 3rd and left double winners.

Due to some player issues, the 8th grade team played first. The Panthers got on the board first when K.C. Winfield snagged the rebound and put it back for two, but there wasn't much more scoring as OH had some problems going against the Seahawk press. By then end of the 1st period, Anacortes had taken a 15-7 lead and increased it to 30-15 at the half. OH couldn't get much going in the 2nd half either as Anacortes cruised to a 61-25 win. Leading the Panthers was Annie Leete with 16 points. Sam Hawkins scored 3 while Winfield, Makenzie Schulle and Maria Backus scored 2 each.

The 7th grade game wasn't much different. Brook Peplinksi scored with 5:30 left in the 1st period to make the score 6-4 for Anacortes but the Panthers wouldn't score again until Nalani Gabbert scored twice in less than 30 seconds with 4:40 left until halftime. At the half, it was Anacortes 26, OH 11. The Panthers scored 4 in the 3rd and 5 in the 4th but the final was Anacortes 52, OH 20. Gabbert led the team with 8 points, McKinley Kellogg came on in the 2nd half to score 6, Peplinski finished with 4 and Heather Anderson scored 2 points.

Middle School Wrestling 2010-03-01 vs Anacortes

The Wildcat United wrestling team completed their home season with a meet vs the Anacortes Seahawks at NWMS on March 1st.

In JV action, winners were Kaleb Curtis, Anthony Alexander, Kurtis Williams, Kenny King, Koby Cosper and Jeremy Vester, all by pin. Winning by decision were Roy Buch (4-1) and Pat Brooke (10-4)

The Wildcats fell behind early in the varsity matches, losing the first two by pin. The first win was a pinfall by Jahleel Vester at 100 lbs. The Wildcats picked up another win when Anthony Smith beat Varnado 13-1 to make the team score 10-12.

Oak Harbor then lost another by pin but Wiatt Charlesworth and Gage Eccleston both pinned their opponents to put the Wildcats up 22-18 but Anacortes won the next match to take the lead back.

In one of the more interesting matches of the afternoon, Brody Dedobbelaere beat Gallo 7-5. Brody got an early takedown the Gallo earned a 1-point escape near the end of the 1st period. Brody started the 2nd in the top position and Gallo was able to get a reverse to take a 3-2 lead at the end of the 2nd. The 3rd started with Brody down and about halfway through the period was able to score an escape as the wrestlers went out of bounds to tie it at 3 each. On the re-set, Gallo scored a takedown to lead 5-3, but then got called for locking his hands, giving one point to Dedobbelaere as the buzzer sounded. Because the penalty was late in the match, 6 seconds was put back on the clock. Gallo was called AGAIN for locking hands right at the buzzer, and the wrestlers were set again with 3 seconds now on the clock and the score tied at 5. All Gallo needs to do is hold Brody down for 3 seconds to send the match into overtime. That's not what happened. Gallo was called a 3rd time for locking his hands (they were all pretty obvious), and since it was his 3rd call for the same technical violation, two points were awarded to Brody and he won 7-5, putting Wildcat United back on top 25-24.

The Wildcats then lost two decisions but picked up 6 points on a pin by Devin Jensen to re-take the 1-point lead. Peter Case-Smith won a tough 5-0 decision to extend the lead to 34-30 then Ed Macinpaulic pinned Hiles to ensure the Oak Harbor victory.

The final was 40-36 and the wrestlers are next in action Friday, March 5th at Cascade MS in Sedro Woolley.

Youth basketball 2-27-2010 @ OHMS

It was another frenzied day of Youth basketball at OHMS last Saturday starting with the Kindergarten camp at 9:30am and continuing through to 4th grade.

The kids play in 3 age-group levels. The Kindergarten Camp focuses on basic skills such as dribbling and there is some live-action play near the end of the hour.

The 1st and 2nd graders are grouped together and are split into teams as are the 3rd and 4th graders.

The Kindergarten and 1/2 grade teams are co-ed while the 3-4 grade teams are gender specific.

While only the games at OHMS were covered, there is also a full slate of games at NWMS.
