Little League baseball and softball

Saturday morning, the North Whidbey Little League held their opening ceremony at the Windjammer Park fields.

After presentation of the colors by the OHHS NJROTC Colorguard, Katie McClimans sang the National Anthem and NWLL board president Mark Ridge then introduced each team.

Following the introductions, Two players, one baseball and one softball, led all the players in the Little League Pledge and the Chief Umpire led the parents in the Parent's Pledge. Then, Oak Harbor Mayor Scott Dudley threw out the ceremonial first pitches, the first a baseball, then a softball.

When the ceremonies ended, most teams went off for their team photos, but the Major softball Mariners played a game against the Central Whidbey Dirt Devils. As was to be expected from the first game of the season, there were lots of errors and mistakes, but the girls all had fun.

Youth soccer 2012-04-14 at Ft. Nugent Park

The 2012 spring soccer season kicked off on Saturday under a beautiful blue sky and a full slate of game.

This year there is an exceptionally large number of participants! There are a total of 18 U-6 teams, 18 U-8 teams, 24 U-10 teams (island wide), 15 U-12 teams, 9 U-15 teams and there are 3 girls High School teams this year, one each North, Central and South.

Most of the U-6 and U-8 games start at 9 or 10am, with the older teams having later start times.

There is never any charge to come watch hundreds of children outdoors having fun.

Girls Tennis update

Even though it was a rainy week, the girls varsity tennis team was able to get in 3 matches this past week.

On Tuesday the 10th the girls were at Glacier Peak and got thumped 6-1, with the only win coming from first doubles Molly Van Dam and McKenzie Schneider. They won the first set 6-2, then squeaked out the second set 7-6(4). At 3rd singles, Jen Fremd split the first two sets before falling 6-3 in the 3rd.

Thursday the 12th was a make up of an earlier rained-out match against 8-1 Shorecrest. Again the Wildcats got only one victory, with Jen Fremd beating her opponent 6-2, 6-1.

Friday saw the varsity girls at home again, hosting 5-3 Everett. This match was closer than the two earlier in the week, but Everett was able to capture the victory 4-3. Wildcat winners were Jen Fremd (6-2, 6-4), Chelsey McKenzie (6-1, 6-3) and the 2nd doubles team of Molly Van Dam and Kyla McKinney (7-6(7), 6-0).

Next for the tennis girls is a trip to Lynnwood on Monday and they host Meadowdale on Wednesday. Apparently, an exhibition match has been scheduled against Coupeville. The Wolves will host Oak Harbor on Thursday the 19th.

Softball 2012-04-13 vs Glacier Peak

On Friday afternoon at Hillcrest Elementary School, the Wildcat softball hosted 2nd-place Glacier Peak.

The JV game was all GP with the Grizzlies seemingly scoring at will. The game ended after 5 innings due to the 10-run rule.

The varsity game was a little better, but not by much. A 6-run 3rd inning by Glacier Peak put the game away, with the final score 10-3.

Baseball 2012-04-13 JV vs Everett

Friday afternoon the JV baseball team played a doubleheader, making up an early postponed game against Everett.

In the first game, as the visiting team, Oak Harbor dominated, shutting down the Seagulls with the 10-run rule after 5 innings.

The second game was much closer. It was a back and forth affair, and going into the bottom of the 7th inning, Everett held a 1-run lead. But a couple of bases-loaded key hits drove Christian Bertram home, crossing the plate to give the Wildcats a 9-8 win.

Girls Golf 2012-04-10 at WGCC

The Wildcat girls golf team hosted Lynnwood and Mountlake Terrace Tuesday afternoon at the Whidbey Golf and Country Club.

Sophomore Annie Leete was the medalist with 31 modified Stableford points, leading the Wildcats to the team victory. The Wildcat's point total was 66 and Lynnwood was close behind with 63. Terrace finished in 3rd with 52 points.

Bre Roderos scored 17 pints, KC Winfield 9, Cassidy Gurich 6 and Katie Brockway 3.

Boys Soccer 2012-03-23 vs Getchell and 2012-04-10 vs Shorecrest

Catching up a bit in boys soccer, the Wildcats had a pair of games on March 23rd vs visiting Getchell, and although both the JV and varsity teams plays some of their best soccer of the season, the Chargers prevailed, winning the JV game 3-0 and the varsity game 2-0.

Then, starting the second half of the season, the Shorecrest Scots came to town. In the first meeting between the two teams, Shorecrest won the varsity match 4-0 and the JV match 6-1.

The games on April 10th had similar results. The JV score was 6-0 in favor of Shorecrest while the Scot's varsity won 7-0.

The boys are off until next Monday, when they travel to Glacier Peak.

Baseball update

While most of the Oak Harbor spring sports teams had the week of spring break off, the baseball teams were very busy, getting in 3 games each.

On April 4th, varsity was at Mountlake Terrace, falling 11-1, while the JV team gave up a 5-2 lead at home and lost 5-6.

The next day the two teams traded places, with similar results. The varsity squad fell 12-1 and the JV team 11-8.

On Friday the 6th, JV was at home to Shorewood and could get only one run across the plate, losing 13-1. At Shorewood, the varsity team was tied 0-0 through the 6th inning before the Thunderbirds got a couple of runs across the plate to win 2-0.

Boys Soccer 2012-04-02 vs Shorewood

Undefeated and untied Shorewood rolled into town Monday thinking they would have an easy time here in Oak Harbor. They were wrong.

Showing a lot of heart on defense, the Wildcats played to a 0-0 tie at halftime. In addition to a strong defense, a lot of credit goes to goalkeeper Kevin Silveira with his numerous saves.

In the second half, however, the Wildcats had to deal with injuries to a couple of key players and as a result the T-birds were able to get 3 shots into the Oak Harbor goal. The final in the varsity game was 3-0.

In the JV game, Shorewood handled the Wildcats on both offense and defense, rolling to a 5-0 win.
