THEY DID IT!!!
After dozens of close-but-not-quite losses and an occasional 1-goal win over the past few years, the Oak Harbor boys soccer team got it all together to beat the Marysville-Getchell Chargers 4-2 Tuesday night at Wildcat Memorial Stadium.
Getchell got on the board first, but Cayley Powers tied it up in the 17the minute. Getchell went ahead again with just 30 seconds left in the half and led 2-1 at halftime.
Andrew Mitchell scored in the 47th minute to tie the game, and for the next 14 minutes it was back-and-forth soccer, until...
Just over halfway through the second half, Chase Muller lined up for a free kick and it sailed over the keeper's head and into the next to give OH a 3-2 lead. What was even more remarkable about the shot is that Muller kicked it from over 40 yards out!
Cayley Powers scored again late, with less than 2 minutes left, going one-on-one with the Charger keeper and the 'Cats walked away with a convincing 4-2 win.

Girls Tennis - Week of March 11-15
It would be great to say that the Oak Harbor girls tennis team kicked off the season with a big win, but it didn't happen Thursday afternoon.

On Friday, the JV team evened their record by beating Arlington 5-2. Whitefoot won again at 1st singles, this time in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3. In doubles play, 1st doubles Ria Bains and Ellysa Boganay won 7-5, 6-7(7-9), 10-4 and 3rd doubles Julia Smith and Olivia Farrell won 6-3, 6-4.
The varsity team played against Burlington as well, but due to the weather played at the Skagit Valley College covered courts and were working against a hard time deadline, so the girls played a single 8-game pro set.
The only OH winner was the 3rd doubles team of Brittany Rigby and Cat Amsler, who won 8-5.
Friday against Arlington the varsity squad picked up two wins, but lost the match 5-2. McKenzie Perry won at 2nd doubles 3-6, 6-2, 7-6(5), and Rigby and Amsler won at 3rd doubles 6-2, 6-2.

MS GBB 2013-03-07 OHMS @ NWMS
Oak Harbor Middle School and North Whidbey Middle School met again, this time at NWMS.
In the first matchup, the OHMS 7th grade team won 20-17, but on Thursday NWMS got their revenge.
The game started out slow, with NW leading 6-4 at the first buzzer, but points from Briana Garcia and Roselia Loera made it 15-10 at halftime. In the 3rd, the Cougars turned up the defensive heat, shutting out the Panthers and grabbing a 24-10 lead going into the final period. In the 4th, OH got some offense going, but the Cougar lead was too much as NWMS won the rematch 28-17. Scoring for the Cougars were Garcia with 15, Loera with 6, Nina Fox 4, Paige Jackson 3 and Alyssa McCauley 2. For the Panthers it was Cherrish Asinsin leading the team with 7, Grace Westcott and Samantha Hines with 4 each, and Trinity Olivera with 2.
The first 8th grade game was won by NWMS, 43-14, and this time the Panthers resolved to do better - and they did!
Looking like a repeat of the first game early, NW led at the end of the first quarter 13-6, but the two teams played even in the second, with NW leading 19-12 at halftime. The OH defense was still keeping the explosive NWMS offense in check, allowing 9 points in the 3rd, but the Panthers could score only 6 of their own. Even though down by 10, the Panthers refused to quit and stepped up their defense even more, and in the final period the Cougars could score only 4 points. Unfortunately, the Panthers scored only 6 of their own, and NWMS swept the 2012-2013 series by winning game two 32-24.
Scoring for the Panthers: Lydia Peplinski 10, Julie Jansen 8, Taylor Edwards 5 and Ally Henry 1.
For the Cougars it was Bryn Langrock 15, Elisabeth Adams and Michaela Pasch 4 each, Rahsanna Graham 3 and Hollie Dunn, Jaden Jesus and Lupe Loera 2 each.
Both teams have a couple more games to play before ending the season with a combined awards banquet late next week.

Middle School Wrestling 2013-02-28
Last Thursday the combined OHMS and NWMS wrestling made a long trip, all the way to Darrington, for a long day of wrestling in a double dual meet also featuring Concrete and Cascade MS from Sedro Woolley.
The first round was against a combined Darrington/Concrete. The coaches were able to work things out so almost every Wildcat United wrestler got on the mat. Because of the size of the OH team, though, some of the Darrington and Concrete wrestlers had to go out against us not just once or twice, but three times!
The early part of the Darrington/Concrete half of the meet didn't go well for Wildcat United, losing a lot of bouts to pins, but the middle and heavy weights got things back on track with some exciting wins.
No individual nor team scores against Darrington/Concrete or Cascade are available.
The wrestlers are at home Tuesday afternoon with a meet at NWMS. Wrestling gets underway around 3:45pm.
Photos from Thursday's action are posted HERE.
