The girls team had a lot of success last year as district and JV champions, and sending 3 girls on to the state tournament. All 3 state qualifiers from last year graduated, but Coach Wesley thinks the team has a very good chance of repeating as district champs this year.
This year’s team will be led by senior Shelbey Hamming, the team’s only senior. The rest of the young varsity team will be Melany Cone, Kara Stratton, Simone Hamilton, Ashley Johnson and Tiffany Earnhart. Only one freshman came out for the team, Kelsey Johnson, and she has been impressing the coach with her efforts.
The girl’s first tournament of the year was scheduled for March 12th in Sedro-Woolley, but was canceled due to too much snow in the course. The first action was the annual Gallery Shootout, held this year at the Whidbey Golf & Country Club on March 16th.
Oak Harbor finished 4th out of 8 teams, with the girls bunched close together in scoring. On a cold and windy day, Ashley shot a 103, with Melany and Tif just one shot behind at 104. Shelbey shot a 116 and Kara 118 for a total spread of just 15 strokes. The only team that was closer was Monroe with 10 strokes between #1 and #6.
As a team the girls tallied 545, just 3 stroke behind Monroe and 21 strokes ahead of Snohomish.
Next up for the golfing girls is a trip to Kamaik next Monday.
