It took what seemed forever, but finally it was over. In a nearly 3-hour JV football game, the Oak Harbor Wildcats defeated the visiting Stanwood Spartans 24-16.
Stanwood got the ball first, but fumbled two plays into the game, then the Spartans picked off a Wildcat pass and returned it 45 yards to take a 8-0 lead early.
On Stanwood's second possession, one of the oddest plays of the game happened. Stanwood was looking at a 4th-and-16 at their own 26 and were set to punt with the kicker on his own 12 yard line. He got the kick off, but the winds was blowing hard and the ball bounced at the 35, then rolled back to the original line of scrimmage where it was downed by the Spartans. The very next play, Oak Harbor completed a 26-yard pass to the end zone. The 2-point PAT attempt failed, so Stanwood led 8-6.
Just before the half, OH scored again on a 37-yard run to take a 12-8 lead into the locker room.
In the second half, the 'Cats punched it in from 4 yards out to boost the lead to 18-8.
Late in the game, with OH leading 24-16, Stanwood was driving, but the Wildcats were able to hold for the win.
The JV team is at home again this coming Monday, October 8th, hosting the Mt. Vernon Bulldogs, then again on the 15th against Getchell.
