On Wednesday, Oak Harbor HS hosted the WESCO North JV Track championships. The girls team fielded only 8 members, but won 3 events and out of 14 entries, 12 were top-8 finishes.
The first winner was Kathryn Fisken, running her first 3200 meter race of the season. Her time of 13:18 was 17 seconds off her all-time best, but she finished first by almost 30 seconds - nearly half a lap. The final finisher in that race was more than five minutes later.
Also in distance running, Clair Trepanier won her 1600 race. She was just a second off this year's best time, and the finish was close, with Claire ahead by just under 2 seconds.
The final OH winner was Hope Thompson in the long jump, flying for a distance of 14' 3", a foot and a half further than her best this year, and only 1.5 inches further than the second place finisher. Hope also set a PR in the high jump, finishing with 4 others with a height of 4'4".
Personal records for the year were set by Shelbie Peddie in teh 200m, Kim Kyle in the 1600, Erin Buch in the javelin, Kirsten Roof in the 300 hurdles, and Angelica Manansala in the long jump.
The boys side of the meet was full of Wildcats, and they made their presence known. We had 7 first-place finishers, 5 2nd placers, and 26 others in 3rd to 8th place.
Races and events of note were the 400m dash, which the Wildcat men took with a 1-2-3 finish - Greg Goebel, Mike Bressler, and James Jordan; the 4x100 and 4x400 relays; and the triple jump (Marco Mendoza jumping 2 feet further than his nearest competition).
There were a LOT of personal records set Wednesday - too many to list them all, but some of note were Marco Mendoza breaking the 12-second mark in the 100, Dejon Pruitt knocking off a whopping 2 seconds off the 200, Ben Page dropping almost 6 seconds off his 1600 time, Brooks Waller cutting a quarter-second off the 110 high hurdles (almost a full second for the year), Jake Lundstrom and Jon Herrick throwing the shot put further than ever before (Jake threw the javelin an additional 3 feet), Colton Elliot adding 6 inches to his pole vault, and Jared Wirth adding nearly 10 feet to his discus distance. I'd love to name all of you who worked hard and set new records, but my fingers would get sore from that much typing.

JV Track championships @ OHHS
Boys soccer comment
The below comment was posted by Catpride on the Soccer post, and I felt it needed more exposure and some comment.
"catpride said...
Another close loss for the V-squad 1-0. Few people know it, but Wesco North Soccer is one of the toughest leagues in the nation (according to AP HS soccer club rankings). 4 teams in the league are as of last week ranked in the top 20 nationally. The boys were extremely close to knocking off 3/4 of these teams so far during league play."
Catpride has a point that needs expanding. I checked on the WIAA site, and out of the 15 games played so far, the Cats have won one, tied one and lost 13. However, over half of those losses were by a single goal. In only 6 matches this year have the men lost by more than one goal, and only two have been complete blowouts. The soccer guys have been competitive and have been in every game, but haven't yet found that spark to put them over into the win column.
The question is, then, what's missing? What's keeping the guys from scoring that one extra goal to send the game into a shootout or at least a tie? What do YOU think?
Boys Golf
At the Whidbey Golf & Country Club in Oak Harbor, the Wildcat boys golf team swung their clubs to another win. With a total of 407, the boys were 10 strokes in front of second-place Lake Stevens in a five-way meet (Lake Stevens, Stanwood, Arlington, & Marysville) Tuesday afternoon.
All of our golfers were under a 90 and two under 80. Phil Reedy had the lowest score with a 76, followed closely by Eric McCardle with a 77. Phil and Eric had two of the three scores that were in the 70s, the other being a Stanwood Golfer.
Other OH Golfers were Brandon Kenworthy with an 81, Josh Hunt with an 86 and Judd Ford carding 87.

WESCO Freshman track championships
The Oak Harbor track freshmen - both boys and girls - were at Arlington Monday for the WESCO Freshman Track & Field championships. DISCLAIMER - I used the spelling of your name from the athletic.net website, unless I know it's wrong. If your name is misspelled, let me know and I'll correct it. All results are from the OHHS page of the athletic.net website.
Photos will be uploaded in a day or so to oakharborsports.shutterfly.com.
The boys did well, garnering two 2nd place finishes and 14 top-8 finishers. Leading for the boys were Douglas Kim, finishing 2nd in the 400 meter dash with a time of just over 59 seconds and Tyler Schell also second in the 3200 meter run, turning in a time of 10:38. he was just 20 seconds in front of teammate Nate Miller who finished 4th overall. Tyler and Nate, along with Devin Schell also ran the 1600.
Aaron Boesch was the go-to guy in the 100 and 200 meter dash, finishing first among the Wildcats, followed by just a couple tenths of a second by Marcus Jordan. Other Wildcat sprinters were Ian Sinchak, Douglas Kim, Logan Williams and Nathan Schultz.
Adrian Jimenez was the sole hurdler for the Wildcat men, finishing 4th and 5th, respectively, in the 110 and 300m hurdle races and setting personal records in both.
In Field events, Marcus Jordan finished 3rd in the shot put, Brandon Maragrag 8th in Discus, Aaron Boesch 5th in the high jump. Logan Williams and Ian Sinchak were long jumpers, but unfortunately, did not place in the top 8.
The girls can boast 3 champions - Abby Leete in the 3200, Allison Duvenez in the 300 hurdles, and Janessa Ramos in the 200 and long jump. Abby cut a second off her personal best, then went on to run the 1600 and 800, setting another PR in the 1600. Janessa ran the 200 in 27.98, a second off her best, and jumped 16 feet, 1/2 inch, which is almost a foot longer than her previous PR and 6 inches more than 2nd place. Janessa also placed 2nd in the 100 and Allison 3rd in the 100 hurdles. The girls had 14 other top-8 finishes.
Sprinters on the girls team, in addition to Ramos, were Nichelle Duncans, Janelle "Yoshi" Yoshimoto, Emily Parish, Tori Nickerson, Neomi Story, Rebecca Ogren and Millie Goebel.
In the hurdles, Rebecca Ogren ran her first ever hurdle race in the 100, finishing a respectable 10th.
Amanda Alvorado and Sam Schortzmann were the shot putters, finishing 5th and 7th. Yoshi placed 3rd in the javelin, followed by Mille Goebel in 4th and Amanda Alvorado in 8th. Emily Parish was the lone high jumper (4th) and Nickerson, Yoshi, and Parish were also in the long jump.
Next up for track is the WESCO JV Championships this coming Wednesday (April 30th) at Wildcat Memorial Stadium.

Track from Marysville
It was a nice day for a track meet - unless you were a distance runner. It was a sunny, warm day, which is great for sprinters and the field event athletes, but hard on the distance runners - if they had their choice, it would be an overcast day around 50-55 degrees with no wind. They got the no wind part, but that's it. The weather did make for the great sunbathing beauties picture of Neumiller and Lamb on the cover of the photo album at Shutterfly.
OH had a fairly small contingent of runners, jumpers, and throwers, so didn't score a lot of team points, but they all did well, with a lot of PRs. One suprising outcome was the girls 4x400 meter relay. Comprised of Allison Duvenez, Kathryn Fisken, Lauryn Wilson and Abby Leete, they totally smoked the opposition in their heat. Allison led off and built a large lead, then Kathryn extended that lead to almost 100 yards. Lauryn maintained the lead and Abby finished almost 75 yards in front of the 2nd place team. What's neat about this relay team is they have never run this race as a team before, and most have never run this distance. Allison is primarily a short sprinter - 100 & 200 meters, Kathryn runs the 800 and 1600 with the 1600 her main event, and Abby is a star in the 3200. Lauryn has run the 4x400 only twice this season (as had Abby), normally running the 100 & 300 hurdles. It was great to see this thrown-together group of girls do so well.

Oak Harbor High School Soccer
I finally made it to a soccer match tonight. Sorry it took so long, but I have to admit it's not my favorite sport.
However, I made it and will be uploading about 70 photos total of the JV and Varsity soccer games. You can find them at http://www.oakharborsports.shutterfly.com
Since I don't know that much about soccer, I can't comment intelligently on either game, but I did talk for a bit with Coach Thompson after the JV game, and he was quick to point out that even though the team lost, Niko Valdez and Santiago Mares both had an outstanding game.
I didn't stay through the end of the varsity soccer game as - who knew - after the sun goes down it gets REALLY cold down on the field!

Middle School track
OHMS and NWMS hosted Cascade and Concrete Middle schools at the NWMS track Wednesday afternoon.
It was a great day for track, with sunny skies, and weather warm, but cool enough that the runners weren't overheating.
I don't have much to report, as I wasn't really watching most events, but a couple things I did see were Justin Everett totally smoking in the 200m dash and Matt Reith kicking some serious butt in the 800 and 1600 meter runs.
Dominique Jackson (DJ, as she's known) did well on the girls side, heaving the shot put for a distance of over 23 feet. I'm looking for good things from her once she gets to high school!
If there were any other outstanding performances, let me know and I'll write about them!
Coach Waller to retire from Baseball
At the end of this season, Coach Jim Waller will be hanging up his cleats (yes, I know it's an old cliche) for good. He's been coaching since the late 1970s, and in 1990 took his team all the way to the state championship game.
From talking with Jim, he plans to coach one more year of JV basketball, which will be son Brooks Waller's senior year, then retire for good.
After graduating from OHHS, Coach Waller came back to teach, so we know that purple flows in his veins. I'm sure he gets some of it from his dad, who also coached sports and is a former Athletic Director for OH.

AAU Girls Basketball at OHHS
This weekend saw the 3-day Oak Harbor Girls Spring Classic Basketball tournament, with 5th through 8th grade teams playing at the high school. The OH Cats AAU organization fielded 3 teams, 6th, 7th, and 8th grade, and all played a LOT of basketball during the tourney.
The 7th grade team had an outstanding tournament, losing only once, I believe, in pool play on Friday and Saturday, but had the misfortune of meeting up against their only loss in bracket play on Sunday. In the first meeting, it was a blowout, with the team from Arlington pretty much having their way with our girls. But we learned from that experience. On Sunday the Cats grabbed a small lead and held on to it all the way to halftime, when Arlington tied the score. In the second half, it was a seesaw game until the final period, when Arlington pulled ahead, finally winning by 7. After the game, the Arlington team lined up to shake hands with the Cats, both teams got a standing ovation from both teams' parents, and each OH player received a medal from the coach with the Arlington girls still there, applauding each OH Cat in turn. It was a well-played, hard-fought game, and our girls should be proud of their achievement. I could hear both Arlington coaches praising the play and sportsmanship of our girls. Good job!
Unfortunately, the 6th and 8th grade teams didn't do as well. The 6th grade girls are just inexperienced. With other activities, it's hard to hold a practice and have the entire team present for the entire practice, and that lack of team building showed on the floor.
The 8th grade girls are just a small team in numbers. With only 7 players, they were getting tired after the long weekend, and for the most part, they played against girls who have been together playing basketball since the 2nd or 3rd grade. With more experience together and 1-2 additional players, they will have more success.
What all 3 teams need, though, is some of our high school girls to volunteer their time and help out at practice. Remember when you were in middle school and how you looked up to the high school players? Give back and help teach these girls. The coaches can teach the teams how to play basketball, but it really takes an active player to teach them how basketball is played. Get up off the sofa, log out of myspace, and give 4 hours a week at practice with these middle school girls - the future of Oak Harbor Girls Basketball.
Westling track meet
Summer *IS* only two months away, right? After waking up to almost 4 inches of snow on the ground, we thought that the meet would be canceled, but, there was no snow at South Whidbey HS. In fact, once past Penn Cove, the snow was pretty much gone, off the ground at least. I did get snowed on during the drive down.
At the site, it was a cold, wet day, but not really windy. But due to the cold and wet, there were not many PRs, especially in the field events.
That didn't stop the Oak Harbor boys from winning, scoring 103 points to second place Mariner's 92. And that with only 4 first-place finishes out of 19 scheduled events. Winners were Richard Chong in the 110 hurdles, Donovan Hunt in the long jump, and the 4.100 and 4x400 relay teams. Junior Brooks Waller dropped time off both his 110 and 300 meter hurdle races and Rashaad Smith dropped a full second off his 400m time.
Although he's not from Oak Harbor in track, OH Cross Country team member Kyle King from Coupeville won both the 1600 and 3200m runs by 4 and 5 seconds, respectively, and came in second in the 800m run by less than 1 second.
The girls team scored 58 points to nab 4th, just 1 point behind Mariner, but well behind South Whidbey's 158. Abby Leete smoked the 3200 again, dropping another 12 seconds, Allison Duvenez won the 300m hurdles, Mietra (Rosie - I can't figure out which she really prefers) Smollack won the 800 and 1600 for the cats, but with only 11 female athletes, it was hard to rack up depth points. Mille Goebel did well in the 400m dash, dropping almost a second and a half and Kirsten Roof dropped a half-second off her 300m hurdle time.
If I missed any substantial PR's, email me and I'll make sure it's noted.
Next up for the runners and throwers is at Everett Stadium next Thursday, followed by the Marysville invite on Saturday. Let's hope the sun decided to come out and stay.

Track stuff
Pictures are up at oakharborsports.shutterfly.com for todays track meet.
Coach Peterson did his sun dance, so for most of the meet the sun was out, or at least barely covered by clouds. However, he forgot to do his 'no wind' dance, and as a result, the wind gods blew harder than usual, making for a cold and rather slow meet.
Even with the cold wind, there were several performances of note, especially on the girls side.
In the 1600m run and long jump, Wildcat girls finished 1-2-3, and finished 1-2-4-5 in the 100m dash. This in addition to winning all 3 relays by a comfortable margin.
Freshman Abby Leete continues to impress in the 3200, winning the race by an astounding 1:41.
Hope Thompson decided to try the high jump, and was the first to place for Oak harbor this year, clearing 4'2" for a 6th place finish.
Millie Goebel in the javelin finished 3rd for the 'Cats and 7th overall, but threw for 76 feet - an increase of 12 feet! Becky Freeman in the discus also added to her personal best. Ariel Brothers continues to improve and was the lone female pole vaulter. She cleared 6'6", tied with 3 others in height, but finishing 4th overall as it took her more tries to clear the height than the other girls.
The boys provided some exciting finishes, particularly Bryce Schulle in the 2oom dash. Bryce was in the lead coming into the final 10 meters, but at the finish line it was too close for me to call. The automatic timing system we installed did call it, and awarded the win to Schulle, by .01 seconds - 23.14 to 23.15. Stephen Lewis was a close third. Bryce also won the high jump event, clearing 5'6".
Brooks Waller finished 3rd in the 300m hurdles, a tough race, but in doing so, chopped 3 seconds of his previous best. Other new PRs for the boys of note were Cody Church dropping over 2 seconds off his 400m time, Nate Miller cutting 4 seconds off his 2-mile time, Austin Church adding 3 feet to his shot put, and finally, Dough Hughs throwing the javelin 12 and a half feet further than he's ever thrown it - an addition of almost 10% to 136'9".
I'll be at the varsity baseball game Friday taking pictures, then at the girls AAU basketball tournament at Oak Harbor HS.
Fall 2008 football schedule - very tentative
Here is the tentative, subject to change, football schedule for the fall of 2008
5 Sep - OH v Cascade
12 Sep - Monroe v OH
19 Sep - OH @ Everett
26 Sep - OH v Mt. Vernon
3 Oct - OH v Snohomish
10 Oct - OH @ Stanwood
17 Oct - Arlington @ OH
24 Oct - Lake Stevens v OH
31 Oct - Marysville @ OH
Again, this is a draft. Note that 5 games just have OH vs. another team. Not all sites have been set. Stay tuned for more.
Wesco league changes football divisions
As has been rumored for some time and confirmed by the Seattle Times today, the WESCO league as split off the 3A schools, placing them in their own division. This starts with the next football season.
Long-time rival Cascade will be moving to the Wesco South while Arlington stays in the north, but as a 4A team.
Here are the breakdowns:
WESCO 4A North WESCO 4A South WESCO 3A
Oak Harbor Cascade Everett
Stanwood Mariner Glacier Peak (new Snohomish school)
Arlington Kamiak Meadowdale
Marysville Jackson Lynnwood
Lake Stevens Edmonds-Woodway Shorecrest
Snohomish Shorewood
Monroe Mountlake Terrace
As it stands now, this format is only for football. All other sports will remain the same. Also, reports say that this organization will only be until 2010. One reason is that Glacier Peak will likely be 4A by then, and Marysville should have a second high school open.

More softball
Another day of softball, this time a double-header against Cascade. It was a MUCH nicer day - a bit warmer and no wind.
Over at the JV field, the bats were active, and we had plenty of base runners. The found it fairly easy to advance on steals, as the Cascade catcher was having difficulty holding onto the ball. I think I witnessed at least 3 steals, all in 2 innings!

JV Boys Golf and Softball
Went to both today and took a lot of pictures.
Speaking of which, I've found an online home for all the pictures I've been taking
http://www.oakharborsports.shutterfly.com
Back to sports. As I don't know much about golf, I only watched the first 3-4 holes, and I don't know the names of any of the JV golfers, the only comment I can make on the match was that it was C-O-L-D!!!! It didn't rain, but boy, was the wind blowing!
We'll not speak about the Varsity Softball game, except to mention that there was a mini-rally in the bottom of the 5th, with a couple of solid hits that scored runs. Over on the JV field, Ari Araceley had just a beautiful swing on a fat pitch, sending it deep into the outfield and getting all the way to third base for her effort. The JV girls also made a comeback after falling behind, but just couldn't score enough runs.

JV track from Monday
Results pulled from http://www.athletic.net/TrackAndField/School.aspx?SchoolID=485
In a quick glance over the results, I saw that Doug Kim posted a PR in the 400m dash with a 1:00 flat time. If you've ever run that race, it's probably one of the toughest races there is. It's considered a sprint, but it's a Loooonnngggg sprint. My hat is off to anyone who runs it regularly.
In the javelin, Anthony Lauersdorf threw the spear just under 87 feet, a 15-foot improvement!
For the girls, Kimberley Kyle dropped over 15 seconds off her 1600 meter time and Shelby Peddie jumped more than a foot and a half further in the long jump, flying for a respectable 14'4".
Girls spring league basketball
I got there late for the beginning of the varsity game against Stanwood. It was a low-scoring game, with a 10-4 OH halftime lead and a final of 24-14 in favor of the Wildcats. There wasn't much scoring, but both Jasmine Chong and Ro Smith had nice blocks. The JV lost by just 2 points to the South Langley team, 25-27.
I didn't know that they needed to differentiate NORTH Langley from SOUTH Langley. That town sure is growing!
Boys Basketball spring league from Sunday
The varsity won! I was talking with Jimmy Edens at the girls game Monday night, and he said the boys varsity team won their first game of the spring season. The JV didn't fare so well, losing a close one.

More stuff from Thursday
On the Golf front, Phil Reedy shot a 72 (2 over par) and Eric McCardle shot a 77, putting OH over (or should it actually be UNDER) Lake Stevens. OH 423, LS 437.
In Tennis, Jen Jansen was the only winner, defeating Cascade's Whitney Taylor in a battle - 7-5 and 7-6(3)
An undefeated in league Snohomish baseball team (8-0, 10-1) came up to Oak Harbor and was able to get the best of the guys.
I don't know how the softball team did. If anyone can give me some details, especially the JV team, I'd be greatful.

Home track meet and more
What a busy sports day at OHHS. There was varsity baseball, softball, tennis, and boy's golf, in addition to the track meet. I was busy taking pictures at the track meet, so don't know how the other teams did.
Speaking of track, it was a long time coming, but we hosted our first track meet in nearly a decade. The day started out cool and cloudy, but as the meet progressed, both the sun and the wind visted Wildcat Memorial Stadium. With a few exceptions, the meet ran smoothly, but slow. It was slow due to some difficulties with our new fully automatic timing system, but the problems were overcome and our tracksters did well.
One thing that really helped was the volunteer efforts by a large number of the OHHS teachers. I saw Mrs. Molitor, Mr. Collins, and Senora Veach with stopwatches at the finish line, Mr. McLeod braving wild javelins, and Mr. Farmer at the shot put. I know there were more, I just can't remember them all. Of course, Mr. Black from ROTC was Mr. Starter for the day, and Mrs. Wichers put in a lot of work getting all the volunteer organized. Thanks to you all!
On the girls side, out of 16 events, our girls won 9, placed 2nd in 4, finished 1-2 in 3, and had a finisher in the top 3 in 14 of the events. Becky Freeman throwing the discus was only 3 feet short of placing 3rd. Our ladies ran, jumped, and threw for a combined 20 2008 season personal records.
PRs of note were Hope Thompson shaving over a second off her 200 meter dash time, Mariah Ferguson with 20 seconds off her 2-mile time, Amanda Alvorado throwing the javelin an additional 17 feet, and Janessa Ramos cutting .78 seconds off her previous 100 dash best.
The boys won 3 of 17 events, placing 2nd in 6, and placing someone in the top 3 in 14 events. Again, in the discus, Stephen Lewis was just 3 feet short of placing 3rd. The boys set 33 new personal records for this season.
Ben Page cut over 18 seconds and Nate Miller cut almost 11 seconds off their 3200 meter times, Donovan Hunt added 2 feet to his long jump best, Cody Klauer ran 16 seconds faster in the 1600, and Clarence LaMont added 9 feet to his javelin throw.
Below are a few pictures I picked out to post.
Girls Golf
I went to watch some of the varsity girls competition on Tuesday to take some pictures, and have some results from the JV competition yesterday. Here's what I got.

Girls Basketball spring league
There were a total of 3 games this past Monday, 4/7. The JV and Varsity squads both played at 6:15pm, at different sites (great scheduling!), and the varsity team played a second game.
I went to the JV game and the 2nd varsity game.
The JV game was at Skagit Valley College, and by the end of the game, there were 5 really tired girls, as there were ONLY five girls at the game. Coached by Keely Smollack in place of Gary Brundidge, who was at the varsity game, the JV players were Janelle Yoshimoto, Jodi Jackson, Sheena Corey, Jessica James and Ariel Brothers. It was a tight game against Lakewood all the way, with OH leading for most of the game, including a 14-11 halftime lead. After the half, though, Lakewood took advantage of the depleted Wildcat team, establishing a lead not long after halftime. The 'Cats closed, with James tying the game at 20 and Corey swishing a trey to give the Wildcats a lead they would not give up again. Jessica's score was particularly satisfying, as it came after a long possession with several attempts, but the Cats were able to keep getting the rebound and shot until they scored. Another exciting play was a nice block by Ariel Brothers with Sheena grabbing the ball and going all the way for the score. The final score was 28-23 for OH.
The result was much better than last Monday's game, when Coach Gary had only a single OH player. That's right - due to spring break travel and other sports commitments, only Sheena Corey was at the JV game that night, and the varsity team was also short players.
The varsity team played at Mt. Vernon HS, in the field house for both games. They also played with a small team, with only 7 players suited up for the first game, which was against Mt. Baker HS. I arrived near the end of the game, but the girls ran out to a 30-13 halftime lead, and held on for a 55-38 victory. Suited up for the first game were Molly DeLeon, Cheyenne Tubo, Cori Henricksen, Jessica Denmon, Jasmine Chong, Tiffany Earnhart and Roshaunda Smith. Apparently it was a fairly physical game, as Smith fouled out with over 6 minutes to play in the 2nd half.
The second game was against Arlington, and in addition to the players listed above, Brothers, James, and Corey saw significant playing time. Starters were Tubo, Henricksen, Chong, Denmon, and Smith. In this game the Wildcats built a 3-0 lead when the Eagles started a full-court press. This hobbled the OH offense for a short while, but long enough for Arlington to tie the game at 3-3 and force the OH timeout. Coming out of the timeout, Jessica Denmon hit three 3-pointers, taking the 'Cats to a 12-3 lead and an Arlington timeout. Arlington came out of their timeout and hit back to back threes, but that was at close as it got, including a halftime shore of 27-24 in favor of OH. The final was 52-39. One humorous play of note was Roshaunda Smith giving a loose ball a hard smack, sending it right at the crowd, where it hit the wall right in between Yoshi's mom and Sheena's mom!
Our girls looked good, displaying a lot of offensive speed and tenacious defense. If this team is any indication of what the team will look like next winter, look forward to another trip deep in the WESCO tournament.
The league is run by the Skagit County Parks and Rec dept, with schedules and standings online at:
