This past weekend, the 18th and 19th of August, the Whidbey Island Disc Golf Club hosted the 3rd Annual Rising Island Open Disc Golf Tournament at Ft. Nugent Park. This year there were 64 players entered, with some from as far away as Eastern Washington. Players spanned all age ranges, with the youngest player a tender 8 years old, and the oldest was 65. The tournament featured 8 women - the most ever the club had seen at a tournament.
Some highlights from the weekend - Jon Wills set a new course record, throwing 13 under par and there were 3 aces scored in the tournament.
Peter Land won the Skittles basket - in this game, 30 players stood on top of the hill behind the south goalpost on the football field at Ft. Nugent. They had 30 seconds to launch as many discs as possible towards a basket set up near the 50-yard line, with the closest disk winning the event. Peter Land won the event by landing his disc in the basket!
In other post-round games, the team of Kenny Clark and Jayden Johnson won $720 in the skins game, and also in the skins, Jason Carr crushed a drive, measuring nearly 600 feet
The men's open division winner was Brandon Parsons from Olympia, followed by Jason Carr of Puyallup and Ray Sanchez from Tukwila. The top local player was Tanner Schwab in 6th place.
Jessie Westphal from Shoreline won the women's open division, Rachel Ruddell from Oak Harbor was 2nd and Katie Schneider from Yelm 3rd.
