Oak Harbor Youth Football 2011-08-27

The OHYFL kicked off the 2011 regular season with all 6 teams in action, 3 at home.

In the 9am game the Junior Pumas took on Burlington Gold. Burlington grabbed an early 12-6 lead in the first half fog, with the only Puma score coming on an interception return.

The Pumas came back to tie the game 20-20 with 9:19 left in the game, then went ahead 26-20 with 6:42 left. Burlington then drove down to the OH 6 yard line but were stopped on a 4th-and-3 play.

Oak Harbor then was looking at a 4th and less than one play with just over a minute left, but a false start backed the team up 5 yards and they could not convert.

The Tiger then scored on a 1st and goal play with 58 seconds on the clock and ran the PAT to take a 27-26 lead.

The Pumas were not out. After returning the kickoff to the Burlington 48, the Tigers bit on a fake reverse and the Pumas were in the end zone, leading 233-27 with 30 seconds left. Burlington was able to move the ball down to the OH 33 when time expired, leaving Oak Harbor 1-0 on the year.

The 11am game was the Cougars vs Arlington Blue. The Cougars return only 4 players from last years' team. Arlington ran to a 20-0 halftime lead and extended it to 34-0 halfway through the 3rd period.

On the next kickoff, Oak Harbor returned the ball 72 yards for their only score of the game. The final in this game was 40-6 in favor of Arlington.

Finally, the PeeWee Bobcats were all over Arlington Gold in the final home game of the day. Arlington's first possession lasted 3 plays - all resulting in a loss of yardage while Oak Harbor's first offensive play was a 25-yard touchdown run. The Bobcats continued to score both on the ground and through the air, with an impressive 39 yard pass play late in the 4th quarter. 14 yards were through the air and 25 yards after catch. Final score - Bobcats 26, Arlington Gold 0.

In the away games, the senior Wildcats lost to Ferndale 21-6, the Midget Panthers lost to Burlington Gold 18-8 and the Junior Jaguars beat Ferndale 6-0.

No game next week, Labor Day weekend. The league resumes action on September 10th with 4 home games at Ft. Nugent - Cougars vs Mt. Vernon Black at 9am, Wildcats vs Arlington Blue at 11am, Panthers vs Stanwood at 1pm and the Bobcats vs Stanwood at 3pm. The Jaguars are at Arlington Gold and the Pumas have a bye.

Youth Football - Preseason Jamboree

After along summer, the fall sports seasons kicked off with the annual youth football Jamboree at Burlington-Edison High School last Saturday.

Youth football games start this coming Saturday, August 27th at the Ft. Nugent complex. Games continue every Saturday until October 22 with the exception of Labor Day Weekend and September 17th.

Turnout was low this year, so there is only one peewee team, the Bobcats, instead of the usual two.

All games are free to come watch and concessions are available. A complete league schedule can be found at the North Cascade Youth Football League site.

2011 Scholarship winners

The Oak Harbor Sports Report annually awards two $500 scholarships to deserving student-athletes. Minimum requirements are a 3.0GPA and participation on at least two interscholastic athletic teams for all four years of high school.

The 2011 winners are: Jordan Faralan and David Tillotson.

David played football for his first two years and was on the basketball and baseball teams for all four years of high school. His GPA is a 3.8+ and he will attend the University of Washington this fall as a science/engineering student.

Jordan played volleyball and tennis for all four years and maintained a 3.9+ GPA. She also is going to UW this fall as a business administration student.

Little League Baseball - week ending June 3rd

As the 2011 Little League Baseball season winds down, leaving a lot of dusty and tired players behind, here are photos from the last few teams.

Track 2011-05-28 - State Meet

The 2011 state track and field meet was held 26-28 May 2011 at Mt. Tahoma High School in Tacoma, WA.

Of the 44 girls 3A teams present, Oak Harbor finished in 28th place with two OH athletes in the top 8. Addy Royal ran a 2:17.01 800m race, setting a PR by a second. She finished in 6th place overall, moving up from 8th in the prelims. She also ran a 5:11.87 PR in the 1600 by did not place. The other medal winner was senior Allison Duvenez who also set a PR of 46.15 in the 300m hurdles, finishing in 5th place.

Other Wildcat female competitors were Sarah Young, Christina Alexander, Jalani Bobo and Janessa Ramos in the 4x200m relay (14th in prelims); Alexander, Duvenez, Maura McKole and Christina Wicker in the 4x400 relay (11th in prelims); Janelle Yoshimoto in the Javelin (16th) and Janessa Ramos in the long jump (17th).

Holy Names Academy in Seattle won the team title for the girls.

For the boys it was junior Josiah Miller on the stand with a 5th place finish in the 200m dash and a 6th place in the triple jump. His jump of 43-2.5 was a new PR for him. Miller also ran in the 100m dash but did not reach the finals.

The only other OH boys were in the 4x400 relay which ran to a 10th place finish at the state meet. Carlton Johnson, Chris Opdyke, Connor Meyer and Miller.

The boys finished 26th out of 43 teams with North Central HS in Spokane taking home the team title.

Little League Baseball 2011-05-27

After a long season, we finally got photos of the last Major team. The photos linked below are of the Athletics vs Rockies game Friday afternoon at Windjammer Park. The game ended after 5 innings with the A's in the lead 13-0.

Little League Baseball & Softball 2011-05-26

With the 2011 spring season starting to wind down, and after a lot of rescheduled games due to this very wet spring, here are some photos from a T-ball game and a Major softball game.

Middle School Track 2011-05-18 @ OHHS

Wednesday last week Anacortes, Mt. Vernon Christian School, Wildcat United (OHMS + NWMS) and Mt. Vernon (LaVenture + Mt. Baker) all came to Oak Harbor for the West Preliminary track meet.

In the 7th grade girls meet, Oak Harbor won 9 of the 13 events and captured 2nd place in two more on their way to a win. The girls scored 147 points to 2nd place Anacortes' 134. Placers were:
