The Oak Harbor wrestlers traveled to their first weekend tournaments last Saturday, with Coach Crebbin taking his top wrestlers to the prestigious Spud Walley Tournament at Sedro Woolley High School, and the JV wrestlers, 35 strong, headed to Snohomish for a JV tourney.
In past years, Oak Harbor has filled most every weight bracket at Spud Walley, and several weight classes had two Wildcats in the bracket, but with such a young team, only 8 Wildcats went to Sedro.
Corey Trimbur, currently at 106 lbs and on his way to 103 lbs won his first match in the 112 lb bracket then lost to the eventual 3rd place finisher in the 2nd round then lost his 3rd match to finish off the podium.
At 119 lbs, Cody Fakkema won 8-1 in his first match then lost to the 2nd place finisher. In the consolation bracket, Fakkema won 8-1, then got a pin before losing the 5th/6th place match, but still finished on the podium.
Brandon Stratton was at 152 lbs and won his first two matches 13-2 and a 1st-round pin, then fell to the bracket champ in the semis. He then beat the other semifinal loser by pin to place 3rd in his bracket.
Collin Higingbotham was in the 171 lb weight class lost his first match then won 2 consolation bracket matches but finished just off the awards podium.
Ryuta Meany (135), Devin Jensen (145), Justin Everett (160) and Jeremy Alonzo (189) all lost their first two matches.
The Snohomish tournament results aren't readily available, but hopefully something will be posted soon.
Next for the wrestlers is a trip to Glacier Peak next Thursday and their first home meet is Tuesday, January 4th in a tri meet against Shorewood and Shorecrest.
A short video highlight clip is posted HERE.
42 photos of the 8 wrestlers at Spud Walley are posted HERE.
