With faint playoff hopes and looking to avenge a Jan 4th 46-38 loss, Oak Harbor welcomed the Meadowdale Mavericks boys basketball team last Friday. With just 3 games left, the Wildcats badly needed a win to hang on to their playoff hopes.
Starting in the dome, the Freshman teams played a tight first half, with Meadowdale leading by just 3 points at halftime, 20-17 but the OH defense fell apart in the 3rd, allowing the Mavs to score more points than the scored in the entire first half, leaving OH down 43-26 at the end of the 3rd. The teams played even in the 4th, with a final score of 51-34 in favor of Meadowdale.
Diamonte Ridley (Cortez) led the team with 10 points, Isaiah Rennes scored 8 and Andrae Gray and Bobby Grace 5 each. Alex Krantz and Gabriel Groenig scored 2 each and Chavez Madden and Casiano Atienza scored 1 each.
The JV team jumped to an early 26-12 lead and increased it to 37-20 at the half. Meadowdale's offense started to play in the 3rd as they scored 17 points, but OH kept even with them with 16 of their own and led 53-37 going into the final period. Meadowdale continued their offensive output and stepped up their defense, going on a 12-2 run to cut the OH lead to 5 (57-52) with 5:11 remaining. A Paul Johannsen score got the Wildcats back on track as they held on to win 72-62. Five Wildcats finished in double figures - Drew Washington with 18, Dayne Herron and Cameron Faulkner with 12 each and Zach Gibbs and Corey Houck with 10 each. Johannsen added 6, Patrick Bell 3 and Anfernee Angkaw 1.
It was a 3-point fest to start the game with the Mavericks sinking 3 and the Wildcats 5. When the period was over, OH led 18-12 and the Wildcats increased their lead to 34-24 at halftime. By the 6:00 mark in the 3rd, after back-to-back steals and dunks by Mike Washington Jr., forcing a Maverick timeout, the Wildcats led 46-26. The Mavericks fought back, ending the 3rd down 51-41. In the 4th, Meadowdale continued to close, cutting the Oak Harbor lead to just 3 points, but our boys held on for a 71-61 victory.
Next for the Wildcats is Senior Night vs Shorecrest on Feb 1st. In their first meeting the Scots won 45-44 in overtime, then on Thursday the 3rd, the boys travel to league-leading and undefeated Glacier Peak with a playoff spot on the line.
Highlights from the JV and Varsity game are here, including a big Mike Washington dunk.
