GBB 2013-01-04 vs Mountlake Terrace

Friday evening of the last weekend before school returns to session after the Christmas break, the Oak Harbor girls basketball team played against Mountlake Terrace in a mostly empty gym.  Boy, did those who were not at the game miss out on some excitement!

First there was the JV game.  Jinai Guzman scored 15 of her 20 points in the first period as OH blasted to a 24-9 lead and went on to win 59-40.  Eleven different players scored at least one point.  The win improved the season record for the JV girls to 7-4.  In addition to Guzman's 20 points, Irene Gribble netted 11 from inside the paint, Taylor Deconzo finished with 6, Brook Peplinski 5, Rosie Mooki and Hayley Lundstrom 4 each, Kenna Prosch, Melanie Callaway, Deja Bunch and Kyla Bernardo 2 each and Jamie Estrella 1.

The varsity game was a study in adversity.  Down 17-9 aat the end of the first, the Wildcat varsity girls fought hard and went to the locker room down by 6 points, 27-21.  What kept the Wildcats in the game was an outstanding quarter by senior Kelsey Rankin.  Rankin poured in 11 of her 19 points in that period and was 5-6 at the line.  The 3rd period, though, was a disaster for the girls.  Needing almost 5 minutes to get their first point, the varsity 'Cats found themselves down by 11 points, 34-23, with 3:08 left in the 3rd and finished the period scoring only 7 points and down 38-28.  Although the girls closed the gap, there were still down by 7 points, 44-37 with 2:35 left in the game.  Then, Ciera Wiser got hot.  She scored 7 of her 9 points in the 4th, including a free throw with 48 seconds left to  tie the game at 44.  Thirty second later it was Annie Leete scoring to give the varsity girls their first lead of the night, 46-44.  The defense held off a last Terrace change and the offense scored once more to make the final score 48-44 in favor of Oak Harbor.  Rankin was the top scorer with her 19, Leete and Jalani Bobo each scored 10 and Wiser her 9 to complete the OH scoring.

The girls travel to Shorewood Wednesday evening and to Meadowdale on Friday.  Next week the girls are at home against Glacier Peak and Friday start the second half of league play at home against Stanwood.
