Last Thursday afternoon the OHMS and NWMS boys basketball teams wrapped up their seasons with a pair of games in the North Whidbey gym.
In their first meeting, on December 20th, the NWMS 7th grade team blew OHMS away, winning 56-28. That didn't happen again last Thursday. OHMS came out ready to play. While OHMS trailed 8-5 at the end of the first quarter, they led 15-13 at halftime. The NWMS Cougars regained the lead in the 3rd period and led 20-17 going into the final quarter. In that final quarter, Jordan Bell scored 7 of his game-high 15 points and with 15 seconds left the game was tied at 29. In those final seconds, OHMS had numerous opportunities to take the lead but missed 6 of 6 from the free throw line. Now with only 1.8 seconds left and the score still 29-29, it was Marcus Carr at the line to shoot 2. He missed the first, but sank the second for his only point of the game, but gave NWMS the 30-29 victory. For OHMS, in addition to Bell's 15 pints, Noah Herrera scored 7, Joseph Arinaza 6 and Nate Chrism 1. The Cougars spread the scoring, with 9 players getting points. Tops was Caleb Johnson with 7, then Andrew Miller w2ith 5. Brennan Ney, TJ Passmore and Max Nuanex each scored 4, Jerome Ruffins and Marcus Foxx 2 each, and Chris Trisler and Marcus Carr with 1 each.
The first OH/NW meeting ended with a 52-14 OHMS win, but this game was also much closer. While OHMS led 17-7 at the end of the first, it was 29-21 at halftime, and might have been 26-21 but for a half-court swish at the buzzer by Tyler Jackson. The Panthers gained complete control of the game in the second half, outscoring the Cougars 16-10 in the 3rd then held on to win 54-42. Scoring for NWMS - Ramon Booker 23, Dominic Sotoa-STevens and Kory Score 4 each, Alex Hartley and Jayse Mullins 3 each, Nate Mecom and Sam Zook 2 each and Logan Bell 1. For OHMS it was Dylan Bailey and D'Andre Bellamy with 14 each and Tyler Jackson with 12.
