Little League softball 2011-05-23 Heat vs S. Whidbey

Monday afternoon the Oak Harbor Little League Junior Softball team, the Heat, took on South Whidbey at Volunteer Park in Oak Harbor.

After getting down 5-2 early, the Heat used effective base running, including several steals of home after bad pitches, to tie the game 5-5. The OH pitcher then struck out 3 in a row and at their next at-bat the Heat started knocking the ball all over the field, scoring another 6 runs.

While the final result isn't available, Oak Harbor appeared to be on their way to a victory.

76 photos from the game are posted HERE.

Track 2011-05-21 - WIRC @ Seattle

The Whidbey Island Running Club traveled to Seattle last Saturday for the first full track & field meet of the year, the Fred Dean Invitational at West Seattle Stadium. While the numbers were small - less than 20 athletes from Whidbey attended the meet, they gathered in 6 first-place finishes.

Thursday night we were able to get to the 2nd of the two Junior baseball teams. The Mariners took on the Red Sox from South Whidbey at Ft. Nugent field.

Unfortunately Junior baseball scores are not posted on the NWLL site and the photographer could not stay for the entire game, so the final score isn't available.

Little League baseball 2011-05-17

After a number of rain delays and other commitments, baseball is back on the photo schedule.

Tuesday night two T-ball games were played at Hillcrest Elementary School. The Hot Rods played the Mud Cats on one field while the Ironbirds vs Knights game was on the other field.

If you've never watched a T-ball game, it's actually quite exciting. There is a lot of hitting and fielding - the game is full of action unlike some other forms of baseball.

Here are 80 photos from the Hot Rods/Mud Cats game.

Little League Softball 2011-05-14 @ Volunteer Park

Saturday afternoon we were able to get to a pair of Little League softball games at Volunteer Park near the pool.

First were the Minor Volcanoes vs South Whidbey. They played hard at there were a lot of dirty faces at the end of the game! At least it didn't rain and the sun was out for most of the game.

46 photos from the game are posted HERE.

Next were two of the three North Whidbey Junior softball teams, the Mariners and Angels. After a short delay due to a missing umpire, the game finally got started. The Mariners were able to get some hits and score runs while the Angels used smart baserunning to earn several runs by stealing home.

Again, lots of tired and dusty girls at the end of the game.

103 photos of both teams are posted HERE.

Sorry for the long delay. Here are Saturday's soccer photos.

Someone forgot to tell Mother Nature that it was May and April showers were supposed to give way to May showers. It rained almost the entire day, and during the BU-12 game was raining quite hard. There was a lot of splashing about and some very wet and muddy kids after the games ended!

Click HERE for 53 photos of the BU-6 Yellow Supersonic Seahawks vs an Red team without a name
. The red team is sponsored by Angelo's Caffe downtown on Pioneer Way. The Supersonic Seahawks are without a sponsor.

Next were the BU-10 Gold Wolverines sponsored by Island Realty. 28 photos are posted HERE.

Continuing with the boys theme of the day, the BU-12 Blue Bombers, sponsored by El Cazador, splashed around on the lower field against a Coupeville team. For a while it was hard to tell if they were playing soccer or water polo! HERE are 45 photos from that game.

Not to let the girls feel left out, the GU-12 Soccer Punch, sponsored by Nautilus Construction, took on a South Whidbey team. 65 photos of the mostly dry game are posted HERE.

Finally, North Whidbey BU-15 team took on South Whidbey on the upper field for the last game of the day. Of course, the rain decided to start up again. 54 photos are posted HERE.

Little League Baseball & Softball 2011-04-07

At the ball fields near the John Vanderzicht Pool, the two Minor Softball teams, the Grasshoppers and Volcanoes, played the first of numerous games. Since there are only two teams in that division the teams will play each other all season long.

On the upper field, the Minor A Knights and Mud Cats played their first game of the season.

In both of these divisions, no scores or other stats are kept, and instead of 3 strikes and you're out, each player, unless they get a hit, gets a fixed number of pitches.

97 photos of the Mud Cats/Knights game are posted HERE.

99 photos of the Volcanoes/Grasshoppers game are HERE.

In that 2nd game, things did not go well early for Oak Harbor, as Terrace jumped to a 4-0 lead. Oak Harbor closed to within a run in the 5th by scoring 3 runs then scored 3 more in the bottom of the 6th to take a 7-6 lead which was enough to win the game.

Today, Friday, the Shorewood Thunderbirds come to town. The T-Birds were picked at the top team in the state in the preseason poll and are currently ranked 3rd in 3A. The Wildcats are ranked 9th in the coaches poll. The winner of the game will take possession of 1st place in WESCO 3A.
