Varsity football @ Lynnwood 2010-10-01

Firing on all cylinders, the Oak Harbor Wildcat varsity football team took it to the Lynnwood Royals, spoiling their homecoming by demolishing the hosts 53-6 in the early (5pm) game at Edmonds Stadium.

Oak Harbor scored on every possession and twice on special teams.

The first drive started at the OH 30, but the team advanced 50 yards in just two plays - runs by Sam Wolfe and Josiah Miller. The drive was capped by a Miller 10-yard run.

The second drive started at the Lynnwood 36 and this time Wolfe punched it in, diving across the corner of the end zone for another 6 points. The kick failed leaving the score 13-0

Less than 3 minutes later, Miller returned a Lynnwood punt 82 yards for another score.

After Lynnwood downed the OH kickoff at their own 10 yard line, it took only 2 plays for the Wildcats to get the ball back when a Royal pass was intercepted by Judd Ford at the Lynnwood 14 and returned to the 9 yard line. Two plays later Peter Franssen caught a Matt Burgoyne pass for an 11-yard touchdown. The kick failed and the 1st quarter ended with OH in the lead 26-0.

Lynnwood's woes continued in the 2nd quarter when Miller intercepted a pass at the Lynnwood 35, returning it to the 16, and a penalty for a late hit was added when he was thrown to the ground out near the running track. Again, it took OH only a couple of plays to score again, this time on a Burgoyne pass to Aaron Boesch, good for 6 yards. The kick was blocked leaving the score at 32-0 with 8:58 left in the half.

Three minutes later it was Isaiah Trower's turn to score, breaking loose from 30 yards out. 39-0 Wildcats with 5:51 still to play.

Again, Lynnwood downed the kickoff deep in their own territory, then Justin Counts snagged the Royal pass at the 24 and brought it all the way back to the 9 yard line. 2 plays later it was Jon Lanningham from 2 yards out for the score. It was now 46-0 with 4:26 left in the half and that score would stand until the horn.

In the 3rd quarter, Oak Harbor scored once more when Miller returned a punt 56 yards to the end zone.

Lynnwood finally got on the board when they broke their runner loose and he romped for 53 yards down the sideline as time expired in the 3rd quarter. The kick failed and the score to start the 4th quarter was 53-6. With such a differential, the clock was no longer stopped but continued to run, ending the game shortly after 7pm.

Next up for the Wildcats is a trip to Mt. Vernon for a non-league game against the Bulldogs this Friday.

Cross Country 2010-09-30 at City Beach

The Oak Harbor Cross Country team hosted the only home meet of the season last Thursday at Oak Harbor's City Beach. Visiting the Wildcats were the 3A Lynnwood Royals and 4A Lake Stevens Vikings.

Running first were the JV boys, with Josh Schrum coming in first place with a time of 17:15 over the 2.75 mile course. Adriel Eckart was 5th overall in 18:28. Sidney Dawson and Aaron Yonkman were only 5 seconds apart in 12th and 13th, Brendan Bristow and Ryuta Meany were 10 seconds apart in 19th and 20th. Dustin Mirabal was 25th, Steven Souza 29th, Ben Pralle 31st and Stacy Jappert 35th. Lake won the JV team title with 22 points. OH was 2nd with 39 points and Lynnwood earned 81 points. (Low score wins).

The girls run a combined JV/Varsity race. Two Vikings crossed the finish line in 1st and 2nd, then there were 7 straight Wildcats. As is becoming tradition, the girls run as a group, saving themselves for Saturday's prestigious Baker Invite. Six of the girls crossed the line over a 3-second period in the order Abby Leete, Allison Duvenez, Adrianna Royal, Christina Wicker, Hannah Bressler, and Alex Laiblin. Olivia Meyer crossed 14 seconds later in 9th place. The winning time was 18:15 and the top OH time was 19:01.

Taylor Von Grey was the first OH JV girl, finishing in 91:44. Heather Dale, Emily Bain and McKenzie Jackson finished 16-17-18 overall, Bailey Martinez was 28th, Megan Maronde 30th and Ashley Cooley 33rd. Oak Harbor win the team title with 25 points, Lake Stevens was 2nd with 36 and Lynnwood 3rd with 85.

In the Boys Varsity race, the winner was Tyler King in 15:13, wearing Coupeville colors but training with and strongly supported by Oak Harbor runners. Lake Stevens finished in 2nd place, over 30 seconds behind King. The first true Oak Harbor runner was Caley Powers, 4th overall with a time of 16:06. Wyatt Homola, Mike Kincy and Clayton Richardson finished 13-14-15, Nate Miller 18, Thomas Honeycutt and Chris OpDyke were 20th and 21st. Lake Stevens was first overall with 18 points, Oak Harbor 2nd with 46 and Lynnwood 3rd with 82.

Football 2010-09-29 - Freshmen vs Everett

The Freshman football team played a solid, if unexciting game at Wildcat Memorial Stadium last Wednesday, hosting the Everett Seagulls.

The Wildcats scored with 4:42 left in the first on a 7-yard QB keeper. The kick failed to make the score 6-0. That score would stand until halftime.

In the second half, the two teams went back and forth until late in the 4th quarter. Running out of time, Everett went to a predominantly pass offense. On a 1-10 play at the OH 45 yard line with 54 seconds left in the game, Oak Harbor intercepted the pass at the OH 31 and returned it 69 yards for a score. A 2-point PAT attempt was no good and the Wildcat defense was able to keep Everett from moving the ball. The game ended with an OH knee and a 12-0 OH victory.

Boys Tennis 2010-09-29 vs Mountlake Terrace

Wednesday the Wildcat tennis team opened play on their brand new tennis courts and did it in style, sweeping the visiting Hawks 7-0 and in straight sets.

#1 Ben Cardinal is the only player that had any trouble at all, and that was in the 1st set which went to tiebreaker before Cardinal pulled out teh 7-6(4) win. He won his 2nd set 6-2.

Josh Evans also got scored on, but won 6-2, 6-3.

#3 Brandon Vagt and #4 David DeGuzman both shut out their opponents, 6-0, 6-0.

The crushing continued in doubles play as #1 doubles Max O'Dell and Geoff Worley won 6-2, 6-4, #2 Will Southard and Michael Serna won 6-2, 6-0 and #3 Ben Harrison and Maric Sobreo won 6-2, 6-1.

In extra matches, Marvyn Sionson won 8-0 and Harrison Miller won 8-4.

Varsity football vs Everett 2010-09-24

Homecoming went well as the Wildcat varsity football team evened their record at 2-2 with a big win over the previously undefeated Everett Seagulls at Wildcat Memorial Stadium.

Everett scored first with an interception return. The PAT kick failed, which would become very important later. A Matt Burgoyne pass to Mike Washington, Jr. tied the score at 6-6, but OH also missed the PAT kick.

The two teams went back and forth until late in the 2nd quarter when Zack Ayer punched across the goal line. This PAT kick was good, giving the Wildcats a 13-6 halftime lead.

Most of the second half was a stalemate, with defenses outplaying offenses on both teams. Everett got an INT in the OH end zone and it appears that OH also got an interception, with the official with the best view calling a touchback but a 2nd official calling it incomplete. In the end it was ruled incomplete.

Late in the game Everett scored a touchdown and instead of attempting a kick PAT to tie the game, they opted to go for the 2 point conversion and the win. They tried to run it up the middle but were stopped by a host of Wildcat defenders.

The final score was Oak Harbor 13, Everett 12.

Youth football 2010-09-25

All 7 OHYFL teams were in action last Saturday, 4 of them at Ft. Nugent.

In the away games, the midget Panthers lost their first game of the season at undefeated Arlington White 31-24.

At Mt. Vernon, the Lynx improved to 2-2 with a 36-19 win over the Bulldog's Black team and the senior Wildcat team won their first game of the season, 32-14, also over MV.

The midget Cougars scored 16 points early and seemed in control of the game, but the visiting Stanwood Red team scored 28 unanswered points to win the game. The loss puts the Cougars season record at 2-2. 30 photos are posted HERE.

Next were the Pumas. The scored at will over a numerically small Stanwood team. Early in the 2nd quarter, with the Pumas up 22-0, a second Stanwood player was injured and not able to return to the game, leaving the Spartans with only 10 eligible player, so the game was called by the officials. Third were the Jaguars, whose 34-12 win over Mt. Vernon puts them at 3-0 this year. A 2-minute clip of video highlights is HERE. Since we were taping the game, there are only 7 photos and they are HERE.

Finally, the Bobcats played hard, but Burlington Gold was able to come away with a 26-15 win. Video highlights of the Bobcats are HERE. 19 Bobcat photos are HERE.

Next week, the Pumas, Wildcats, Panthers and Bobcats play at Ft. Nugent Park, starting at 9am. Other games are the Cougars and Jaguars at Burlington and the Lynx at Arlington.

Homecoming 2010

Prior to the Homecoming football game, the Homecoming Assembly was held in the OH gym where the 2010 Homecoming Court was presented to the student body. In addition, the fall athletic teams were presented and a short video was shown.

At halftime of the game, the court was presented to the spectators to very loud applause.

Girls Soccer 2010-09-23 vs Mountlake Terrace

It was a tough night for the Oak Harbor girls soccer teams - a lot of work and nothing to show for it.

In the JV game, neither team mounted much of a threat offensively and the game ended in a 0-0 tie.

In the varsity game, the Oak Harbor girls dominated on the field, but could not find a way to get the ball into the net. Jordan Boucher had a number of saves and at the end of regulation the score was 0-0. While JV can end in a tie at the end of regulation time, varsity games have overtime periods.

At the end of the 1st 5-minute OT period it was still a scoreless tie, which stood at the end of the 2nd OT period.

The game then went into a shootout, alternating OH and MLT players both kicking from the penalty line into the same goal. The Hawks were able to get 3 shots in a row past Boucher while the OH shooters weren't able to get any in so the final score was 1-0 in favor of MLT.

Volleyball 2010-09-21 Arlington

It was "Dig for the Cure" night last Tuesday as the Wildcat Volleyball team hosted the Arlington Eagles in their 2nd home match of the year. Both teams wore pink T-shirts instead of their usual team jerseys in support of breast cancer.

In the dome, the Freshmen lost a close 25-27 set then demolished the Eagles 25-8 to tie the match before falling 20-25 in the 3rd.

At the same time, the JV team was having problems in the main gym. They found themselves down 4-11 early in the first set before a time out called by coach Rick Swankie settled them down. The girls chipped away at the Eagle lead until Amanda Pavey dug the ball across the net for a point and a tie set at 19. Late in the set the Eagles were looking at set point, 24-23, but a service error tied it back up. Taylor Nienhuis tapped her set across the net to set up set point for the 'Cats, but an OH service error tied it back up at 25. An Eagle hitting error gave the advantage to Oak Harbor and Hannah Salmons put the set away with a big kill.

The 2nd set went back and forth early with Oak Harbor on the short end of the score most of the time. That was until three straight service aces by Pavey put the Wildcats up 13-11. The set was still close until late, when Lizzy Chase had two service aces of her own to finish the set 25-22 in the Wildcat's favor, and winning the match 2-0.

In the 3rd, non-counting set, Arlington was able to pull out a 25-22 win.

The varsity squad came out a little sluggish to start their math, but with the set tied at 21, Oak Harbor reeled off 4 straight points, ending with a pair of Kelsey Terrazas-Cooley service aces to win 25-21.

In the 2nd set, the varsity team got hot early. Behind kills by Amanda Blau and Katelyn Bristow, the Wildcats zoomed ahead 12-4. Arlington didn't give up but was never in this set as the Wildcats finished it off with a kill by Blau to win 25-11.

The 3rd set went to the Eagles as OH was not able to generate much offense. Terrazas-Cooley had a pair of aces and a kill, Janessa Ramos had a pair of kills and Kristine Bouchard added a single kill, but that was about it for earned points in the set. Final score 25-17 for Arlington.

It was more back-and-forth action early in the 4th set, with the score tied at 7. A Bristow kill and two Roshel Muzzall service aces put the Wildcats ahead for good 10-7. Oak Harbor commanded the remainder of the match. Christina Alexander came off the bench to earn 3 of the final 5 OH points with service aces while Ramos smacked down a nice Jordan Faralan set to give OH a 25-15 lead and a 3-1 match win.

Boys Tennis

Still waiting for contractors to finish the new OHHS tennis courts, the boys tennis team has been playing all matches on the road.

On 9/17 the team traveled to Everett and was dominated 7-0. None of our boys were able to win even a single set. The win improved Everett's record to 3-1

On 9/20 the boys fell to Meadowdale 2-5, with Brandon Vagt winning 6-2, 6-4 and David DeGuzman going 3 sets to win 6-2, 3-6, 6-2. Meadowdale is undefeated this year.

Sept 21st was at Lynnwood and although Oak Harbor lost 4-3, coach Mells said it could have gone either way. He said that 4th singles Max O'Dell played a hard 3-set match that went to tiebreaker and 1st doubles (Geoff Worley and Eric Berner) were leading 5-2 in the 3rd set when Lynnwood mounted a comeback to win the match. Individual OH winners were #2 Brandon Vagt (6-2, 6-3) and #3 David DeGuzman (6-0, 6-1). The #2 doubles team of Will Southard and Michael Serna won 6-4, 2-6, 6-4.

Continuing the grueling road trip, the Wildcats went to 4A Marysville and picked up wins by #2 singles Josh Evans (6-3, 6-1) and #4 singles David DeGuzman (6-4, 6-2) but that was it for Oak Harbor as Marysville won 5-2.

The road trip ends Thursday with a match at Glacier Peak. With luck and some decent weather, the OH courts may be ready for play next week.

Varsity football @ Shorewood 2010-09-17

It was the Josiah Miller show at Shoreline Stadium last Friday as the Wildcats picked up their first win of the season in a blowout 46-7 win over the host Shorewood Thunderbirds.

The game started with a bang as Isaiah Trower ran the opening kickoff 78 yards for a score.

Shorewood then got their only score of the game, a 32-yard run after an interception.

Shortly before the end of the 1st quarter, Josiah Miller got the first of his 4 touchdowns, this a 9-yard run to put the 'Cats up 14-7.

Miller really got going after the first quarter. He intercepted a Shorewood pass and returned it 63 yards for a TD. Not content with just one INT for the game, he snagged another on later and returned it 16 yards. He also added a 49-yard punt return for a TD as well as a 14-yard run to end the scoring.

Also getting in the end zone for the Wildcats were Aaron Boesch with his first ever varsity TD, an 8-yard pass reception. Zack Ayer also caught a pass for his score.

On Monday, the JV Squad continued the dominance of Shorewood with a 48-19 win.

Youth football 2010-09-18

Only 3 teams played at Ft. Nugent Field last Saturday, and there are photos of only the 1st team to play that day.

The Cougars started the day with a big 36-24 win over Burlington Gold (photos are HERE). The win puts the Cougars at 2-1 for the season

Next at home were the Wildcats, who lost to Burlington 36-8. The Wildcats are now 0-3.

Finishing the day at Ft. Nugent were the Panthers, who demolished Stanwood Black 24-0. The Panthers are now a perfect 3-0.

In away games, the Junior Pumas got their first win of the season, beating Arlington White 40-8. Also getting their first win were the peewee Lynx, 37-7 winners over Stanwood. The Bobcats fell to Sedro White 12-7 and the Jaguars had the day off.

This coming Saturday, September 25th, there will be 4 games at Ft. Nugent. At 9am it's the Cougars vs Stanwood Red, at 11am the Pumas vs Stanwood, at 1pm the Jaguars vs Mt. Vernon and at 3pm the Bobcats vs Burlington Gold. It's all free so come down and cheer the future of Oak Harbor football.

Cross Country at Seaside

Showing that their #7 ranking in state is deserved, the Oak Harbor girls cross country team finished in 1st place at the annual 3 Course Challenge in Seaside, Oregon. The Wildcat team of 7 runners had a combined total of 65 points. Tahoma was in 2nd place with 146 total (low score wins).

The Wildcat win came over 92 teams and over 2,000 runners from 4 states.

Way to go ladies!

Girls Soccer 2010-09-18 vs Lynnwood

Oak Harbor got their first league win of the season and 2nd win overall with a 3-0 victory over visiting Lynnwood.

Millie Goebel scored all 3 goals for the Wildcats, assisted twice by freshman Annie Leete and once by freshman Chelsea Atkinson.

Jordan Boucher was in the goal for Oak Harbor.

JV completed the OH sweep of the Royals by winning 2-0.

Volleyball 2010-09-16 vs Lake Stevens

The Wildcat volleyball team faced the Lake Stevens Vikings in a non-league match for their home opener of the 2010 season. The varsity squad has done well so far this season.

In the Field House, the Freshman team played 3 very close sets against Cavalero Mid-High, Lake Stevens' freshman campus, winning 2. In the 3rd set the Wildcats found themselves down 21-15 but battled back to tie the set at 24 before Colts took the final 2 points. Set scores were 25-23, 27-25 and 24-26.

It wasn't a pretty first set in the main gym for the JV girls who lost 6-25. There were 2 nice kills in the first set, by Hannah Salmons and by Amanda Pavey, and Adrea Thomas added a service ace. In set 2 the girls settled down and played much better, staying with the Vikings and holding a 14-13 lead halfway through the second set. In the end, errors by the Wildcats put LS on top 25-18. In the final set, Katie McClimans had a kill and service ace but it wasn't enough as the Vikings swept the Wildcat JV squad 3-0.

Varsity came out strong in the first set, building a 6-2 lead behind kills by Kelsey Terrazas-Cooley, Janine DeGuzman and Mandy Kepner, but Lake Stevens fought back, knotting the score at 15. The score went back and forth and was tied at 23, but the Vikings got two straight points to win set 1 23-25.

In the second set the girls never found any rhythm, spotting LS a 6-1 early lead. The final in set 2 was 14-25.

Set 3 also went to the Vikings. Lake Stevens led through most of the set but the Wildcats kept it close. A service ace by Terrazas-Cooley and kills by Katelyn Bristow and setter Jordan Faralan late in the set closed it to 20-23, but again the Vikings put it away, winning 25-20 and winning the match 3-0.

Freshman and JV football vs Glacier Peak

The freshman football team had a rough time playing against Glacier Peak as the Grizzlies jumped to a 29-0 halftime lead. The Wildcats were able to score late and get a 2-point conversion, but the final was Glacier Peak 36, Oak Harbor 8.

Last Monday the JV team was at Glacier Peak for their first game of the year. Coach Nurvic said it was a close game and the JV team played well, but GP was able to score late in the game to win 46-34.

The JV team plays at home on Monday, September 20th against Shorewood.

Girls Cross-Country ranked in state!

The Oak Harbor girls Cross Country team is #7 in the most recent Washington State Cross Country Coaches Association rankings. League opponent Glacier Peak is the current 3A #1 team.

The Cross Country team will have a single home meet this fall, on September 30th at a location to be determined. The meet will include Oak Harbor, Lynnwood and Lake Stevens.

Boys Tennis

After winning their season opener 7-0, the Wildcat boys tennis team dropped back-to-back matches against Shorecrest and Shorewood last Friday and Monday.

In the Shorecrest match, only senior Brandon Vagt was able to get a win with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 decision over Lyn Vergara. All the other Wildcats lost in straight sets except 2nd doubles Eric Berner and Michael Serna who won their first set before losing the final 2.

On Monday, Shorewood swept the 'Cats 7-0. 2nd singles Josh Evans came close to a win with scores of 4-6, 5-7. Brandon Vagt played well in the first set, going to 4 tiebreakers before falling 6-7(4) but was beaten 1-6 in the 2nd set.

Oak Harbor is now 1-2 on the season and should be able to start playing matches at the new OHHS courts very soon.

Youth soccer 2010-09-11

The North Whidbey Soccer Club started their fall season on Saturday with a full slate of 18 games.

We were able to get to 7 of them and the photos are posted below.

The BU-6 Black Steamers played the Green Rhinos with 29 photos posted HERE.

Also at BU-6, the Grey Dragons took on the Yellow Jackets. 19 photos are posted HERE. The Dragons are sponsored by Angelo's Cafe on Pioneer Way.

In girls action, it was the GU-6 Green Tinkerbells and the Purple Sharks - 26 photos

Another unnamed team, GU-6 Blue, played the Pink Unicorns with 47 photos HERE. The Unicorns are sponsored by Moving & Grooving just off Goldie Rd. in Oak Harbor.

There won't be any youth soccer photos again until October 9th due to prior commitments.

Youth football 2010-09-11

3 teams were in action on the Ft. Nugent fields last Saturday, the Cougars, Jaguars and Lynx. The Bobcats had the weekend off while the Pumas, Wildcats and Panthers all had away games.

The midget Cougars started the home stand by taking a 6-0 lead at halftime over Arlington Blue, but the Eagles fought back and were able to score 24 unanswered points to win 24-6. The loss puts the Cougars at 1-1 for the season.

The Jaguars also played Arlington Blue, but in the junior division. They played tough and had some letdowns, but triumphed with a 12-0 victory. The win puts the Jags at 2-0 for the season.

In the final game of the day, the Lynx just couldn't get any momentum on offense, losing to Mt. Vernon Green 26-6. The Lynx are now 0-2.

Varsity Football 2010-09-10 vs Glacier Peak

It was another tough night for the Wildcat football team as the visiting Grizzlies sprinted to a 35-0 first-half lead.

Oak Harbor was able to score twice, the first with 19 seconds left in the 3rd quarter, a Matt Burgoyne to Mike Washington pass for 16 yards. The other score was with just 17 seconds left in the game. Isaiah Trower ran around the right side for a 37-yard score.

On defense, Justin Counts was a standout with 2 interceptions.

Next up for the Wildcats is a trip to Shoreline Stadium for a 5pm game against Shorewood, one of two early games this season.

At Mountlake Terrace, the Wildcat boys tennis team started their season in a good way, sweeping the host Hawks 7-0, with every match won in straight sets.

In exhibition matches, Maric Sobreo and Harrison Miller lost to Kim and Milner. The MLT players were the #1 and #2 singles players put together for the exhibition doubles match.

Also, Marvyn Sionson lost a very close match to Bryce Pingul, 9-8(4)

Girls Soccer 2010-09-09 vs Shorecrest

Thursday night was Oak Harbor's home opener for soccer, hosting the Shorecrest Scots. The girls felt good coming off a 12-0 thumping of Mariner earlier in the week and it showed, as the girls were aggressive on both ends of the field.

The defense allowed just a single goal, that a shot that went in during a scrum close to the net very late in the first half. However, the Wildcats just couldn't get the ball into the Shorecrest net and the game ended with the Scots winning 1-0.

In JV action, the Wildcats just could not get any kind of momentum and fell by a 7-0 score.

Freshman football 2010-09-08 vs Archbishop Murphy

On Wednesday the OH Freshman Football team started the season with a game against Archbishop Murphy. The game was a last-minute addition to the schedule and both teams were scrambling. The Murphy team was late arriving to the school and then found out they didn't bring their jerseys, so during the game they wore Wildcat away jerseys.

Once the game started, ABM was able to score on their first possession, and that was it for the entire game. The Oak Harbor did a decent job defending the run but had some problems with the passing game.

The Wildcats struggled on offense, and when they did get a drive going, it was usually an error that stopped it, not the defense.

In the end, it was Archbishop Murphy 6, Oak Harbor 0.

Varsity Football 2010-09-03 @ Mountlake Terrace

The Wildcat varsity football team opened their 2010 season on the road at Edmonds Stadium against Mountlake Terrace last Friday and the Hawks took it to Oak Harbor.

The game started with MLT running back the opening kickoff for a score and scored 4 more times before halftime.

Oak Harbor got on the board just before halftime when QB Matt Burgoyne took the ball in from 3 yards out to make it 35-7.

In the 2nd half, the defense steadied up a bit after adjusting to Terrace's up the middle style of running, holding MLT to just a single score.

Oak Harbor scored the final points in the game with about 3 minutes left in the game when Burgoyne threw to Mike Washington, Jr. for a 28-yard score.

OHHS Girls Soccer 9-7-2010 - updated

The girls got the 2010 season going on the right foot by traveling to Mariner HS to completely destroy the Marauders 12-0.

8 different OH players took part in the scoring with another 3 adding assists.

Jember Jansen led the scoring with 3 goals. Katie Duhrkopf and Morgan Dutton each scored 2 goal and Brighton Pruss, Annie Leete, McKenzie Schneider, Jordan Boucher and Kaitlyn O'Neill each scoring 1.

Millie Goebel was singled out by coach Jeff Laiblin for her 4 "great assists". Dutton and Chelsea Atkinson each had 2 assists while Leete, Boucher, O'Neill and Sarah Young had an assist each.

Goebel's 4 assists tied the school record. She now shares it with Sheena Darling who had 4 assists in a single game in 1999.

There was no JV game played Tuesday night.

The Soccer team opens their home schedule with a league game against the Shorecrest Scots at Wildcat Memorial Stadium. JV starts at 5:30, Varsity at 7pm.

OHHS football begins this Friday

The Wildcat varsity football teams travels to Edmonds Stadium to meet Mountlake Terrace in the opening game of the 2010 season.

The Hawks are coming off a 4-2 conference season (6-4 overall) and were the #2 finisher in the WESCO south last year, earning their first-ever playoff spot. Oak Harbor finished 2-4 in the WESCO North and 3-7 overall, coming in 5th place in the league.

This year both teams are in the newly formed WESCO 3A league and this will be the first meeting between the two teams in recent memory.

The game is the 2nd of a doubleheader at Edmonds Stadium with a scheduled start time of 8pm.

Youth football 2010-08-28 - Opening day

The Oak Harbor Youth Football League kicked off the regular season with a set of 5 games at the Ft. Nugent complex last Saturday.

First up were the midget Panthers, facing off against Stanwood Red. From the beginning, it was easy to see that the Panthers were the superior team. The Panthers first scored with 8:45 left in the 1st quarter on a pitch to lead 6-0. The second score was also in the 1st quarter after a reverse went the distance. The quarter ended with the Panthers leading 12-0 and that score would stand through halftime.

In their second series of the 3rd quarter, the Panthers started the drive with 2 consecutive penalties, then had a long TD run called back by another flag, but the Spartans muffed the Panther punt and it was recovered by Oak Harbor. The Panthers drove down to the Stanwood 3 but turned the ball over on downs. On their first offensive play, Stanwood fumbled the snap and the QB was tackled in the end zone for a safety. With 5:03 left in the game it was now OH 14, Stanwood 0. On the free kick after the safety, Oak Harbor mishandled the ball and Stanwood recovered, turning it into a touchdown 6 plays later to cut the Panther lead to 8, 14-6 and 2:10 left in the game. Oak Harbor grabbed the kickoff and drove down the field, scoring on the final play of the game to win 20-6.

Next up were the Jaguars against the sole Stanwood junior team. The game was all Jaguars from beginning to end, as the Oak Harbor defense never allowed Stanwood to cross midfield.

The first Jags TD came on a handoff with 3:59 to go in the 1st quarter. A kicked PAT was good to make the score 8-0. The next OH score came with just 32 seconds left in the 1st on a 36-yard TD pass play. There was a bad snap on the PAT attempt and the run failed. 14-0 Jags. Oak Harbor scored twice more in the 2nd quarter on running plays making the score 26-0 at halftime. The Jaguars scored at the 5:16 mark in the 3rd and the 6:49 mark in the 4th to run the final score to 40-0.

The middle game, starting at 1pm, featured the junior Pumas vs Ferndale Gold. Ferndale game to Oak Harbor physically and mentally ready to play football, unfortunately, the Pumas were not. Ferndale took the opening kickoff down to the Puma 7 yard line before fumbling to Oak Harbor. The Pumas went 3-and-out, then Ferndale scored with 8:18 left in the 2nd. Each team had a single possession in the remaining 1st half time which ended with Ferndale leading 6-0.

In the 3rd quarter, things didn't get much better for the Pumas as Ferndale scored at the 3:48 mark then again at the 5:41 point of the 4th period. Oak Harbor just could not get any offense going at all and ended the game on the short end of a 20-0 score.

The 4th game of the day was the midget Cougars vs Sedro Blue. This game started with a lot of excitement, as the Cougars recovered the onside kick and the first play from scrimmage went up the middle for a touchdown. The score was called back due to a penalty, but the score went back up with 5:48 to go in the first quarter, Cougars ahead 6-0. Later in the first, the Cougs returned a Sedro punt for another score to make it 14-0. Late in the 2nd quarter, an Oak Harbor runner got loose for a 63-yard touchdown run to increase the lead to 20-0. The first-half shutout was sealed by a Cougar interception.

Scoring on their first possession of the 2nd half on a 54-yard run, the Cougars elected to attempt a kicked PAT (worth 2 points in youth football to encourage kicking) and the team watched the ball sail right through the uprights to make it 28-0 Cougars with 9:25 left in the 3rd. Oak Harbor added yet another score at the 2:50 mark on a 14-yard run to make it 34-0. In the 4th, Sedro was able to finally mount a drive, scoring from the OH 7 yard line then scored again on a 67-yard breakout run. The Cougars responded with a 68-yard scoring run of their own to end the game with a 40-12 victory.

Finally, starting almost on time, the peewee Lynx hosted Burlington Blue. Burlington struck first, needing only 4 plays to take an early 6-0 lead, then scored again as time expired in the 1st quarter to make it 13-0. The Lynx weren't down yet, as they had a decent drive of their own, scoring from 33 yards out to close the game to 13-6 at halftime.

Burlington used their first drive in the 2nd half to increase their lead to 20-6 on a 24-yard run and added another halfway through the 4th to make it 27-12. With plenty of fight still left in them, the Lynx broke loose for a 66-yard touchdown run, but BE got the final say with a touchdown as time expired, taking a 33-12 win home with them. In the books the score is listed as 34-12, but the pass PAT after the second Burlington TD was counted as 2 points instead of 1.

In the two games played outside of Oak Harbor, the senior Wildcats were at Arlington and had some center/QB exchange problems, with two fumbles leading to Eagle scores in the 1st half. The second half was better for the 'Cats, but Arlington still won 20-12.

Also at Arlington, the peewee Bobcats were down early 19-0 against Arlington White, but also recovered some, but not enough, as they lost 25-14.

Next week, Labor Day weekend, there are no games due to the long holiday weekend. However, the High School team will be at Edmonds Stadium on Friday, September 3rd to face Mountlake Terrace in their 1st game in the new WESCO 3A league.

The next OHYFL games are September 11th with 3 games at Ft. Nugent. The Cougars kick things off at 9am against Arlington Blue, followed by the Jaguars, also against Arlington Blue, at 11am, and finally the Lynx vs Mt. Vernon Green at 1pm.

The Pumas are at Burlington at 9am, the Wildcats at Lakewood at 11am and the Panthers at MV Black at 3pm. The Bobcats have the day off.

Youth Football 2010-08-21 - Jamboree

Again, Oak Harbor is fielding a total of 7 youth football teams. In the Pee-Wee division (6-8) are the Lynx and Bobcats, in the Midget division (9-10) are the Cougars and Panthers, the Juniors (11-12) are the Jaguars and Pumas and there is one Senior team, the Wildcats.

The Oak Harbor Youth Football League commenced play last Saturday at Burlington-Edison High School with the annual Jamboree. Each team had a minimum of 3 scrimmages against an outside team. The teams had 10 minutes continuously on offense and 10 on defense. The Pumas looked good against all their opponents and look to be one of the top teams this year.

The regular season opens next Saturday, August 28th, with 5 games at the Ft. Nugent field. The day starts at 9am with the Panthers taking on Stanwood Red followed at 11am with the Jaguars also against Stanwood. At 1pm it's the Pumas vs Ferndale Gold, at 3pm the Cougars vs Sedro-Woolley Blue and the final game, at 5pm is the Lynx vs Burlington Blue.

All the games are free and the snack shack will be open. Come down and cheer on the future of Oak Harbor!

Youth Football

The Oak Harbor Youth Football season is underway, with teams in their 2nd week of practices. On Thursday, the midget teams, the Cougars and Panthers, got together for a scrimmage. 47 photos are posted HERE.

Both starters and subs saw a lot of action and there was a lot of encouragement for both teams by both coaches as well as several dozen parents on the sidelines. Some great sportsmanship was displayed all around!

First Scholarship awarded

Back in June, the Oak Harbor Sports Report awarded its first ever scholarship at the annual awards ceremony at Oak Harbor High School. The $500 award was funded with the proceeds from the online photo sales and highlight videos. As sales increase, so will the award amount.

The scholarship is for a OHHS senior that participated in at least two sports per year for all 4 years of high school AND maintained a 3.0 or higher GPA.

The winner for the Class of 2010 was Adam Smith. He played on the football team for all 4 years of high school and swam in his senior year, in addition to other sports.

Adam will attend the University of Washington and recently learned to fly.

Congratulations, Adam!

Youth soccer 2010-06-05 - Final weekend

The final weekend of spring youth soccer was last weekend at Ft. Nugent Park with mostly just the U-6 and U-8 teams playing.

Soccer will start up again in the fall with another group of fun, hard-playing kids.

It was a fun year for all the players, and not a little bit of sweat and tears were left on the field after each game.

Girls Tennis State results

The OHHS doubles team of Clarissa Abadesco and Laurin Rico finished the 2010 state tournament at Kamiakin HS in Kennewick in 6th place.

The girls started out with a 6-3, 6-0 loss to Tahoma HS from Tacoma. The rebounded by beating Federal Way easily 6-1, 6-3.

Their next match, against Walla Walla was tough and our girls lost the first set 3-6. Again they responded and won the next two 6-4, 6-2 for the 2-1 win

Next the girls faced Kentwood. Laurin and Clarissa won the first set 6-4 and the 2nd set was a much closer 7-5 win.

In their final match, with the winner getting 4th place, the girls faced a local team - Edmonds-Woodway. The OH girls played hard, but it wasn't enough as EW won 6-1, 6-2.

State track results

The Oak Harbor women, as a team, finished with 9 points to finish in 27th place out of 51 participating teams.

The only boys event was the 4x100 relay team that ran a time of 44.30 in the prelims for 13th place.

Naomi Walker finished 10th in the 100m dash prelims in 13.10. In the 200 meter dash prelims she ran a 26.25, good enough for 7th place and a trip to the finals, where she ran a 26.71 and earned 3rd place. Naomi was the only Freshman finalist in the 200m dash.

The girls 4x100 relay team ran a 50.06 prelim race but were one spot away from the finals with a 9th place finish.

Nicole Mowbray jumped 5-0 in the High Jump for 14th place. She also finished 11th in the triple jump.

Shantae Young, in the long jump, had a mark of 16-9.75 and finished 8th.

One final to report from the first day of the state track championships.

In the triple jump, Shantae Young set a new PR of 38-6.75 to earn 3rd place in that event.

Nicki Mowbray, in her first year of track, jumped 36-2 to finish in 11th place

Girls Golf District Tournament at Gallery Golf Course in Oak Harbor

The Oak Harbor Wildcats hosted this years' district golf tournament at the Navy's Gallery Golf Course.

Day 2 started with 39 golfers with the top 15 going to state. Of those 39 golfers, 6 were from Oak Harbor.

After the first day, Ashley Johnson was the top Wildcat, shooting a 93 for 6th place. Simone Hamilton shot a 97 and was tied for 8th.

Millie Goebel and Sasha Olson each shot 100 and were at 16th. Melany Cone was 24th with a 103 and Mara Cortez 38th with a 114.

On day 2, Ashley showed her consistency by shooting a 94 for a total of 187. That earned her 7th place and a trip to the state tournament next week in Pasco.

Melany Cone, after ending the first day in 24th place, shot a 93 on day 2 to boost herself up to 10th place.

Also going to state is Simone Hamilton who shot 100 on day 2 for a total of 197. She finished 11th.

Sasha Olson shot 105 on day 2 and finished 21st with a 205 total. Millie Goebel had 109 on the 2nd day for a total of 209 and 23rd place.

Mara Cortez improved by 13 strokes over day 1, shooting 101 on the 2nd day for a total of 215, moving her up to 31st place.

The 3 state participants are the team's 3 seniors, and the 3 juniors are well-poised to make their own run to state next year.

Girls Tennis - District tournament day 2

In the doubles consolation semifinal, Laurin Rico and Clarissa Abadesco defeated Ann Fina and Marina Messerli of Stanwood 6-4, 6-3 for a chance to earn 3rd place and a trip to the state tournament.

In the final match, Julie Winston and Brielle Nicholas beat Laurin and Clarissa in the first set, 7-6(4), but the Wildcat women regrouped and won the next two sets 6-2, 6-4 to earn the 3rd and final spot in the state tennis tournament.

Cady O'Dell and Erin Neilon were tied for 7th in singles play.

One thing in looking at the District meet participants - OH had a freshman, 4 sophomores and a junior for the boys and 2 freshmen, 2 sophomores, 5 juniors and only 2 seniors. Plenty of talent to build on for next year!

Girls Tennis - District tournament day 1

On the first day of the WESCO 4A District 1 tournament at Stanwood HS, Oak Harbor came out with mixed results.

In doubles, #2 seed Laurin Rico and Clarissa Abadesco defeated #3 Mariner 6-2, 6-0 to move into the semifinals. There, they lost 6-2, 6-0 to the #1 seed from Edmonds. They will continue at 3pm Thursday.

Erin Neilon came in seeded #3 and faced the South #2 in the first round and lost a hard 3-set match, 2-6, 6-3, 2-6. Then in the consolation match she fell 2-6, 4-6 to Kamiak.

Cady O'Dell also had a tough day, falling to the South #1 seed 6-7(3), 2-6 then losing in the consolations 2-6, 4-6.

New Head Girls Basketball Coach at OHHS

Trisha Wieber is the new head coach at OHHS, replacing Brett McLeod who resigned after leading the team for 8 years.

Girls AAU basketball 2010-05-16 Tiger Tournament

Oak Harbor had a single representative in last weekend's Girls AAU Basketball Tiger Tournament in Burlington - Gary Brundidge's 5th grade team.

The first game was a close 14-11 to the Southside Crush, followed by a heartbreaking 2-point loss to EBC Thunder. The team finished pool play with a rematch against the Crush and this time pulled out a big 30-13 win.

Sunday was bracket play, starting with a semifinal game against UBA Lightning. The Wildcats faced and aggressive defense that got a lot of steals from our girls and it translated into a 19-9 loss for Oak Harbor.

The girls then faced Stanwood for a chance to finish 3rd, but sharp shooting and solid defense by the Spartans doomed the Oak Harbor effort, 20-14.

The Cats finished the tournament in 5th place.

BBB 2010-05-16 Spring League

The OHHS Boys basketball team finished off their Spring League season with a trio of games at Skagit Valley College.

First up was the JV Gold team who had no problem disposing of Mt. Vernon 56-28

The Varsity team went against a good Glacier Peak team and found themselves down 30-21 at halftime. The 2nd half wasn't nearly as close as Glacier Peak opened a big lead and cruised to a 74-37 win.

Finally, the JV Purple team led Burlington 25-19 at the half but couldn't hold on as Burlington won 47-42.

Boys Golf 2010-05-17 - District 1 tournament

The boys golf team had an off first day at the District 1 boys golf tournament Monday at the par 72 Everett Golf & Country Club. Monday's scores will be added to Tuesday's scores to determine who goes on. 14 players will advance to state.

As expected, Jackson HS is first in the team standings, with 5 of 6 players shooting in the 70s and a team score of 375. Kamiak is 2nd with 379 and Arlington 3rd with 402. Oak Harbor is currently 7th with a stroke count of 421.

Individually, Cascade's Anthony Chiarelli is listed in first place, tied with 2 others at 71.

Judd Ford, the highest placing OH golfer, shot an 80 to tie with 7 others. Ford is currently listed in 26th place. Also in the top 40 are Austin Fields with an 83 and Matt Fikse with an 85.

Track 2010-05-14 - WESCO North finals

At the end of the 2010 WESCO North track championships, the Oak Harbor girls finished in 2nd place and the boys came in 9th overall.

Starting with the boys, Donovan Hunt was the standout athlete, finishing 3rd in the long jump, 5th in the triple jump, and 8th in the 100. Donovan would have been part of the 4x100 relay team but had to bow out and Josh Higbee stepped in.

In other track events, Jason Curles came in 4th in the 2oom finals and Matt Bolte 2nd in the 800m finals.

In addition to the 4x100 relay, the 4x400 relay also placed, coming in 8th place.

Cody Hernkind and Sam Schultz both cleared 5-6 in the high jump to tied for 8th place and Josh Higbee was 9th in the long jump.

The girls team produced 5 champions. Naomi Walker won the 100 and 200 meter dash, Shantae Young won the long and triple jump, and the 4x100 relay came in first place.

Young also placed 3rd in the 100 and Janessa Ramos placed 4th in the 100 and 6th in the 200. Walker was 5th in the long jump.

Addy Royal came in 2nd in the 800 and 5th in the 1600.

Nicki Mowbray earned team points by finishing 4th in the high jump (4-11), 2nd in the long jump and 3rd in the triple jump.

Girls Tennis 2010-05-13 and 14 - WESCO North finals

On day 2 of the WESCO North tournament, the Wildcats continued their success on the courts, sending all 4 players on to Friday's final matches.

In the singles semifinal, Erin Neilon lost to #1 seed Megan Lalone from Stanwood 6-0, 6-0 then Cady O'Dell lost to #2 Sarah Tuemmler from Marysville 6-1, 7-5. In the consolations, Cady beat Brooke Winslow 6-0, 6-0 and Erin beat Heather Smith of Stanwood 6-2, 6-2 to set up an Oak Harbor battle for 3rd and 4th.

In doubles semifinals, Laurin Rico and Clarissa Abadesco won 6-2, 6-0 to advance to the championship match.

On Friday, after spending most of the season at #2, Erin beat Cady convincingly 6-1, 6-0 to capture 3rd place. Both girls advance to the District Tournament at Jackson HS.

Laurin and Clarissa fought hard, but wound up on the short end of a 6-4, 6-4 score, finishing 2nd place in WESCO North. Not bad for having played together for just a couple of weeks!

Track 2010-05-12 - WESCO North prelims

At the end of the first day, things weren't going bad for the girls and weren't going well for the guys.

In girls 100m prelims, Oak Harbor put 3 girls in the top 10 - Shantae Young won in 12.37, Naomi Walker was 2nd in 12.59 and Janessa Ramos was 5th in 12.89. Naomi was first in the 200 prelims in 26.18 and Janessa was 5th in 26.89.

In the 400m dash prelim, Maura McKole, Allison Duvenez and Christina Wicker all finished in the top 10 (of 24 entries).

Addy Royal finished 3rd in the 800 prelim, followed by Wicker and Hannah Bressler, both in the top 10 as well.

Abby Leete was the top OH finisher in the 3200 finals earning 10th place in WESCO North.

In hurdles prelims, Raeanna Wynne was 10th in the 100m hurdles.

There were 3 field events contested on the first day, discus, javelin and long jump.

No OH athletes finished in the top 10 in discus or jav, but Shantae Young won the long jump (17-4), Nicki Mowbray was 2nd (15-11.5) and Naomi Walker 5th (15-4.25).

Friday will have finals for the track events except the 3200 as well as the shot put, high jump, triple jump and pole vault.

The girls ended the first day in 3rd place with 26 points. Stanwood was first with 50 and Arlington 2nd with 41. Monroe, Everett and Lake Stevens ended the first day in single digits.

For the boys, Donovan Hunt and Jason Curles were the only sprinters to finish in the top 10, both finishing in 8th place - Donovan in the 100 and Jason in the 200. Top sprinter Josiah Miller was absent due to an injury he received at practice earlier in the week.

In the distance events, Matt Bolte was 5th in the 800 prelims and Matt Reith 10th in the 1600m finals.

Josh Sayre set yet another PR in the 110 hurdles, finishing in 17.26, good enough for 15th place overall.

The boys 4x100 is in 4th place with Derrick Clarit filling in for Miller and the 4x400 relay team is currently 8th. Finals for both events are Friday.

Shot put, High Jump, Pole Vault and Long Jump were the boys field events contested on Wednesday.

Javon Payne was the sole shot put entrant and finished 12th overall with a PR heave of 44-0.

Cody Hernkind and Sam Schultz tied for 8th place in the high jump with marks of 5 feet 6 inches.

Hunt and Josh Higbee both finished in the top 10 in the long jump with Hunt jumping 21-3.75 for 3rd place and Josh 19-9.5 for 9th.

As with the girls, finals for all the sprint races will be on Friday, along with finals for the 800m, 3200, hurdles, discus, javelin and triple jump.

At the end of the first day, Cascade was leading the event with 47.2 points with Snohomish 2nd with 44. OH was 9th with 8.4 points.

The event is being held at Arlington High School with field events starting at 5pm and track events at 6pm. Come support your school!

Boys Golf 2010-05-12 - WESCO North tournament

Oak Harbor's Judd Ford shot a 76 at Everett's Legion Golf Course to create a 4-way tie for first place in WESCO North boys golf. With him were Arlington's Jack Lindley, Cascade's Anthony Chiarelli and Lake Stevens' Kyle Gellner.

The good score pushed Judd for a season tie with Chiarelli, both with 154.5 points total for the season.

As a team for the seaon the Wildcats finished in the middle - 4th of 9 teams with 19 team points. Arlington was on top with 27 points and Cascade on the bottom with 8.

In the WESCO tournament, Oak Harbor finished in 4th with a combined score of 413 strokes. Arlington was first with 391, Lake Stevens 2nd with 402 and last was Cascade with 445.

Softball 2010-05-07 vs Everett

You couldn't have asked for better weather in which to play softball, but it was about the only thing that went well at Friday's game as the varsity team lost 9-1. The lone OH score came on a RBI fly by Marissa Fakkema that sent senior Aria Araceley home.

Before the introduction of the 3 Oak Harbor seniors and their families, the team took a moment to recognize Everett's sole senior. The Wildcats then said goodbye to Aria Araceley, Emily Meagher and Whitney Osborn who were presented along with their parents.

The JV score wasn't available.

Tennis 2010-05-06 vs Snohomish

The Varsity tennis team traveled to 2nd place and 11-3 Snohomish for their final regular season match. Oak Harbor came into the match at 6-10.

Oak Harbor got off to a good start, with #1 Cady O'Dell winning in 3 sets, 3-6, 7-5, 6-2 and #2 Erin Neilon winning 6-1, 6-0. In Doubles #1 Laurin Rico and Clarissa Abadesco went 3 sets before winning 6-4, 6-7(5), 6-1. However, that was it for Wildcat wins as sophomores Shannon Neilon and Alexa Holmly went down in singles, juniors Jordan Faralan and Kerry Rathsabandith at 2nd doubles as did Team Jennifer (Fremd and Bowers) at 3rd doubles. Snohomish was also able to capture both extra matches and won the match 4-3.

While the varsity team was at Snohomish, the JV team was hosting the Panthers at OHHS and things did not go well at all. In fact, of the 15 matches played, Snohomish won every one in straight sets.

One match of note was Kristen Shields at 3rd singles. At Snohomish in mid-April, she lost to her opponent 0-6, 0-6, but in the rematch on Wednesday she improved that score to 2-6, 4-6. Coach Garry Brown called her improvement "phenomenal".

That ends the regular season, but select varsity girls will be moving on to district tournaments.

Golf - Boys and Girls.

Both the boys and girls varsity golf teams were in action this past week with the boys at Cedarcrest GC near Marysville on Wednesday and the girls at the Whidbey Golf & Country Club in Oak Harbor on Thursday.

In the boys match, OH #4 Austin Fields had a great day, shooting a 76 to finish in a tie for second place. #1 Judd Ford scored 77 to earn 4th place. Matt Fikse shot 82 and Greg Martin 87 to round out the OH scores.

Overall, Oak Harbor finished in 3rd place with a combined score of 412. Lake Stevens was first with 401 and host Marysville 2nd with 404.

Before Thursday's girls match, Coach Wesley took some time to acknowledge his 3 seniors - Ashley Johnson, Simone Hamilton and Melany Cone. The 3 seniors were very easy to spot on the course as they all had a big balloon tied to their golf bag.

Although two Everett golfers captured the two top spots, Oak Harbor's consistency won the day as the Wildcat girls finished 3-4-5-6-8 to earn 229 points. Everett was 2nd with 219 and Stanwood a distant third with 74 points.

Simone was the top OH golfer with 50 points. Mel got 49, Ashley 47, Sasha Olson 47 and Millie Goebel 36.

Overall this season, Cone is the #2 female golfer in WESCO North. She has a point average of 17, just 0.6 points behind an Everett girl. Simone is 7th with 15 points, Johnson 16th with 11.9 points, Sasha 20th with 11.5, and Millie 22nd with 11.3. Mara Cortez is 41st and averages 5.4 points while the 60th girl, from Lake Stevens, has an average of just 0.4 points.

In team standings, OH is in 5th place with 12 team points, behind Marysville with 14 and Everett & Monroe with 13 each.

One of the Wildcat track teams won yet another big meet, but this time it was the boys and not the girls who came out on top.

Led by first-place finishes by junior Aaron Boesch in both the 100 and 200m dash and as a member of the 4x100 relay and a win by Josh Sayre in the 300m Hurdles, the boys scored 106 points, well in front of 2nd place Snohomish.

Middle School Track 2010-05-05 @ OHHS

The Wildcat United combined middle school track team held their one and only home meet of the year on Wednesday, May 5^th at Wildcat Memorial Stadium against Burlington-Edison and a combined Mt. Vernon team (LaVenture and Mt. Baker). Of the 4 separate meets (7^th boys and girls and 8^th boys and girls) Oak Harbor won all but the 8^th grade girls, and they were just 6 points behind winner B-E (66 to 60) and WAY ahead of 3^rd place finisher MV (16 points). The 8^th grade boys scored 66 points while MV and B-E tied with 38 each, the 7^th grade girls won with 61 points over B-E (55) and MV (25) and finally the 7^th grade boys crushed the other two teams with a 75-33(BE)-31(MV) score. Overall Wildcat United scored 262 points, Burlington 192 and Mt. Vernon 110.

Girls Tennis 2010-05-04 vs Cascade

The girls tennis team finished off their home season with a big win over visiting Cascade 5-2.

Before the match began, Coach Mells took a moment to recognize the two departing seniors, Erin Neilon and Laurin Rico.

This match was a bit different as Coach Mells mixed up the lineup a bit. Jordan Faralan was missing due to testing and Laurin Rico was nursing an injury, so sophomore Shannon Neilon and junior Kerry Rathsabandith were moved up to singles play while Rico and Clarissa Abadesco teamed up for 1st doubles.

Cady O'Dell won her first set 6-3 and was up 3-0 in the 2nd when her opponent was forced to retire from the match. Erin Neilon won her match easily 6-2, 6-1 but sister Shannon had a hard time against her opponent, falling 2-6, 1-6. Kerry Rathsabandith went into tiebreaker in her first set before winning 7-6(5) then destroyed her opposite 6-1 in the 2nd set.

In doubles, Abadesco and Rico were 6-4, 6-4 winners and at #2 doubles, team Jennifer (Fremd and Bowers) won their first set 6-3, lost the second 3-6 and went to tiebreaker in the 3rd before pulling out a 7-6(5) win. #3 doubles Darcy Fremd and Alexa Holmly also went 3 sets, but lost 6-4, 4-6, 1-6.

In extra matches, Nicole McKenzie and Molly Van Dam lost a close 5-8 match while Joyce Abides won 8-2 in an extra singles match.

Baseball 5-4

The Wildcat varsity baseball team won their one-game playoff against Arlington Tuesday afternoon 5-2 to earn a trip to Shorewood today, May 5th for the district tournament play-in game. The winner goes into the WESCO double elimination tournament.

WESCO Freshman championships 5/4

Mariner High School's Goddard Stadium was the site of this year's WESCO Freshman Championships and Oak Harbor, particularly the girls, had and outstanding day.

Top 10 finishers for the boys were:

Josh Crebbin in the 800m run with a time of 2:16.10, just .1 seconds off his personal best.

Jeremey Foster in the shot put, throwing the 12-lb steel ball 36 feet 9.5 inches, just 2.5 inches off his PR.
Dakota Sinchak threw the javelin 118-1, a new PR by over 12 feet - a 10% increase!
Sam Schultz was 6th in the high jump with a leap of 5 feet even

For the girls:
Naomi Walker won the 100m dash in 12.92 seconds (2nd place was nearly a half second behind)
Jalani Bobo was also in the 100 and finished 7th in 14.29
Jember Jansen was 10th in 14.56
Bobo also ran in the 200, finishing 8th in 29.94
Christina Wicker and Jember Jansen finished 6th and 7th in the 400m dash. Christina had a time of 1:03.83 and Jember 1:05.51
Wicker finished 4th in the 800 meter race and not far behind was Hannah Kagey in 7th place. Hannah came in 7th in the 3200m run, her first time running that race this year.

Raeanna Wynne finished in the top 10 in both hurdles races. In the 100 she was 3rd with a PR time of 17.54 and in the 300 she was 9th in 54.76 seconds.

The OH 4x100 relay team made up of Chylan Bass, Brianna Quinn, O'Hinae Welch and Ciera Wiser came in 4th place in 57.40
The 4x200 relay with team members Naomi Walker, Jember Jansen, Jalani Bobo and Raeanna Wynne finished 2nd in 1:55.89.
Megan Duhrkopf, Jember Jansen, Hannah Kagey and Christina Wicker ran the 4x400 relay and earned 5th place.

Elizabeth Adkins was 2nd in the discus at 87-1
Ciera Wiser was 2nd in the javelin, hitting 100 feet even for the first time, adding nearly 10 feet to her PR. She was just 2 feet away from winning the event.
Naomi Walker placed 3rd in the long jump with a leap of 15-1.5. Brianna Quinn was 10th with 12-8.5
Chylan Bass came in 4th in the triple jump in 28-8.75

The WESCO JV championships are today, Wednesday, at Snohomish High School.

The Lake Stevens Vikings baseball team, currently ranked #1 in the state came to OHHS Monday afternoon and showed why they are ranked #1.

The game started with a 5-run Viking first inning against none for the Wildcats. The 'Cats scored one in the 2nd while holding LS to 3, making the score 8-1. Oak Harbor held Lake Stevens scoreless in the 3rd then drove in 3 runs in the bottom of the inning thanks to some heads-up baserunning by the Wildcats, making the score 8-4.

Lake Stevens recovered and scored another 8 runs to end the game 16-5 in 6 innings.

The loss put OH into a tie with Arlington for the 5th and final playoff spot in WESCO North. If the Wildcats win they then go on to play Shorewood from the South for a berth in the district tournament. Arlington and OH split their games this year with each team winning the away game.

Boys Soccer 2010-05-03 vs Monroe

On Senior Night, the OHHS soccer teams went to the field to try to avenge losses to Monroe earlier in the year.

Back in April the JV team lost to Monroe 6-0, and looked like Monroe was going to win again as the Bearcats held a 1-0 lead for most of the game. Late in the 2nd half, however, Oak Harbor was able to kick in a goal and the game ended in a 1-1 tie.

Before the varsity game time was taken to recognize this years' seven seniors and their parents. Playing their final game at Wildcat Memorial Stadium were #3 Greg Wolfe, #5 Tyler Lauzen, #6 Jake Sandefur, #7 Ryan Fakkema, #11 Marcos Anjos, #12 Brandon Oppenheim and #17 Clay Mosolino.

On the field, Monroe scored first, but not more than a minute later Wolfe kicked it in to tie the game. By halftime, though, Monroe opened a 4-1 lead and the only other scoring in the game was a Michael Shevchuk penalty kick in the 2nd half leaving Monroe on top 4-2.

Boys Golf 4-29-2010

Last Thursday the varsity boys golf team was at Everett's Legion Golf Course for the 8-team Everett Invite. As expected, Jackson HS finished first with all of their golfers shooting under an 80 as did 2nd place Kamiak. Oak Harbor as a team finished in 5th with a total of 430.

Oak Harbor's #1, Judd Ford, shot a 78 which was good enough for 12th place overall. #6 Greg Martin played really well, shooting an 84. Matt Fikse had an 86, Austin Fields 88 and Jim Nguyen 94.

While the boys were in Everett, the girls were at Battle Creek Golf Course near Marysville. In that match OH came out on top with a modified Stableford score of 127. Lake Stevens was 2nd with 110 and Stanwood 3rd with 64.

Senior Melany Cone was co-medalist with 27 points along with teammate Simone Hamilton. Ashley Johnson was right behind with 26 points. Millie Goebel scored 24 and Sasha Olson 23.

The girls play next at home this coming Thursday with a 3pm tee-off at the Whidbey Golf & Country Club.

Boys Basketball 5/2/2010 Spring League

The OHHS boys basketball teams are nearing the end of their spring league and overall have done well. OH is fielding 3 teams in total, one varsity and two "C" teams.

Last Sunday the varsity team went up against Maple Ridge from Canada. The first half of the game was tight, but OH opened it up in the second half and went on to a double-digit win. The win puts the OH varsity at 3-3 for the season.

In the "C" team standings, the OH Gold team lost to Sedro Woolley earlier in the day, dropping them to 4-2 while the OH Purple team lost to Stanwood, putting their record at 1-5.

The boys play their final game of the spring league season on Sunday May 16th at Skagit Valley College in Mt. Vernon. The Gold team plays at 2pm against 4-2 Mt. Vernon, the varsity team plays at 3pm against 4-2 Glacier Peak and the Purple team faces off against 1-4 Burlington at 4pm.
