Basketball 2012-12-28
Friday was not a good day for Oak Harbor basketball. With 5 teams in action, only one came away with a win.

In Bellingham, the varsity girls fell 58-46 to host Bellingham on Thursday and 57-41 to Tahoma on Friday.
Friday afternoon, the boys JV and freshman team and the girls JV squad competed in a rematch against Anacortes.
The Freshman boys fell 54-38 in the dome, the boys JV 63-44 in the main gym and the girls JV lost by an unreported, but significant score.

AAU GBB 2012-12-22
The Oak Harbor Catz, a grade 5-8 AAU team coached by Gary Brundidge, finished the winter S.W.I.S.H. season with their tournament held at Skagit Valley College last Saturday. The team ended the regular season with a 3-5 record.
Their first game was against ProStock Basketball, a team that had beaten the Catz soundly earlier in the season. In this game, the two teams were neck-and-neck right to the end, but unfortunately, the Catz were on the wrong end of a 30-28 score. ProStock went on to capture the tournament title.
In their second, loser-out game, the Catz fell to the B-E Sting 35-30, ending the season.
Photos from the game against ProStock are posted HERE.

GBB 2012-12-21 vs Ferndale
Last Friday night the Oak Harbor girls basketball team faced off against the Ferndale at OHHS with the Golden Eagles winning all 3 games.
The freshman game was very close early, even having lost Rosie Mooki, who recently moved up to the JV team. Annabelle Whitefoot scored 7 in the first quarter and OH was down only 3 points, 18-15, at the first buzzer. Ferndale took a firmer lead in the second, outscoring the 'Cats 13-8 to take a 31-23 lead into the locker room. In the final two periods, both teams scored only single digits and the Wildcat girls were not able to cut into the Ferndale lead and lost 46-39. Keisha Watts paced the team with 12 points with Taylor Deconzo, Janae Payne and Whitefoot each scoring 9.
In the JV game the Ferndale defense was aggressive and tight, allowing only 2 points by Oak Harbor in the first period, and by halftime the Golden Eagles were up 28-10. Things didn't get better in the second half as the 'Cats fell 53-27. Jinai Guzman and Brook Peplinski each finished with 6 to lead the team. Kyla Bernardo and Irene Gribble scored 4 each, Rosie Mooki 3, and Hayley Lundstrom and Jamie Estrella 2 each.
The varsity nightcap was a study in contrast. In the first quarter, Oak Harbor played even with Ferndale, and led 15-12 at the first horn. In the second and third period, though, the Wildcats were outscored 17-8 and 18-6 as Ferndale built a 47-29 lead going into the final 8 minutes. Ferndale saved the best for last, scoring 23 points to the Wildcats' 19 to win the game 70-48. Jalani Bobo scored 19 points for the 'Cats, 9 of them from the free throw line, and Annie Leete also scored 15 points, all of them off of 3-pointers. After the first half of the season, the varsity girls stand at 1-3 in league and 3-5 overall.
Oak Harbor also won the JV game, 38-31. A stiff defense held Getchell to single digits in each of the first 3 quarters, but slipped a bit in the 4th, allowing 13, but the 38 points scored by the JV 'Cats was topped the Chargers and gave the JV team their 2nd league win of the season. Irene Gribble and Jinai Guzman shared the high score with 11 each. Hayley Lundstrom finished with 5, Brook Peplinski 4, Kenna Prosch 3, , and Rosie Mooki and Jessica Hollins 2 each. BBB 2012-12-15 JV and Freshmen at Cascade
Saturday the Freshman and JV squads traveled to Cascade HS for a pair of game.
The freshmen opened and played an excellent first quarter. OH got on the board first with a nice layup by Savion Passmore, then Sean Erskine sank 3 straight to boost the Wildcat lead to 8-0. Cascade got into the game with 5:47 left in the quarter by dropping a three-pointer, then crawled back into the game but trailed 11-10 at the first break.
The Wildcat defense stumbled a bit in the 2nd and 3rd quarters, allowing a total of 30 points while scoring 25, and the Bruins led 45-36 to start the 4th period. A Passmore free throw with 4:43 left put the lead back on the OH side, 46-45 and for the rest of the game it was a back-and-forth affair, and came down to the final seconds. Another Passmore free throw put the Wildcats up 50-49, but a second shot was waved off by the officials, who called a lane violation on OH. Cascade was fouled while going for a shot with 7.3 seconds left and sank both shots to regain the lead 51-50 and the 'Cats were unable to score in the final seconds and left the floor with a 51-50 loss.
Erskine finished with 16 points to lead the team, Passmore and Shane Huttula each finished with 15, and Tyler Snavely scored 4.
As close as the Freshman game was, the JV game was a blowout from the beginning. Oak Harbor just could not get any flow going in the game against a stout Bruin defense and fell 73-40. Zach Jones scored 18 for the 'Cats, Gage Eccleston 9, JJ Johnson 4, Connor Parmenter 4, and Elijah Smith and Isaiah Rennes 2 each.
The boys return to action with a set of 3 games Tuesday night against Pilchuck and on Thursday travel to Getchell. Over the break they will play in a 3-day tournament in Bellevue before returning to the Wildcat court on January 2nd vs Sedro Woolley.

GBB 2012-12-12 vs Everett
Wednesday evening the OHHS girls basketball team hosted the Everett Seagulls and came away with 2 wins and one loss.
In the dome, the Wildcats got 4 points each in the first quarter from Rosie Mooki, Janae Payne and Keisha Watts to take an early 14-8 lead, then outscored the visitors 12-4 in the second to lead 26-12 at the half. Another 18 points in the 3rd period - 8 each by Mooki and Taylor Deconzo - put the game out of reach. Things slowed down in the final quarter an OH won 49-25. Mooki finished with 16 points and Deconzo 10. Annabelle Whitefoot added 9, Watts 8, Payne 4 and Trisha Sablan 2.
It was another big win for the JV team in the main gym as they came back from a poor first quarter to win 40-29. Nearly five minutes into the game, Oak Harbor scored their first point, a Jinai Guzman free throw. At that point it was Everett 9, OH 1, but the Wildcats scored 5 more points in the final 3 minutes while allowing only 2 points to make it 11-6 in favor of Everett at the first horn. In the second quarter the JV defense stepped up, allowing only 2 points by the Seagulls and tied the game 13-13 at halftime. In the 3rd period, while the 'Cats scored 11 points, the Seagulls had their best quarter of the game, scoring 14 and taking a 27-24 lead into the final period. Again, the JV defense stepped up their game, again holding the visitors to just 2 points while scoring more points in the final period - 16 - than they did in the entire first half. As is becoming her signature, Hayley Lundstrom scored all 6 of her points in the closing minutes of the game. Guzman led the team with 12 points while Brook Peplinski dropped 11. Kenna Prosch and Sierra Southwick each scored 3, Deja Bunch and Melanie Callaway 2 each and Jessica Hollins 1.
As long as it took the JV team to score their first point in their game, the varsity squad took even longer. Ciera Wiser hit a shot with 2:45 left in the first quarter to make the score 10-2. Once the door was broken, the team quickly scored another 6 points to end the first quarter down 12-8. However, Everett opened the 2nd quarter with a 9-1 run to make their lead 21-9, but Oak Harbor fought back over the final 4 minutes of the first half to close the gap to 22-17 with 40 second left. However, a quick 5 points by Everett in those final seconds gave them a 10-point lead at halftime.
As the second period began, so did the 3rd, with Everett increasing their lead to 50-24 by the end of the 3rd period. In the final period, Oak Harbor nearly doubled their point total, with Annie Leete scoring 13 of the team's 17 4th quarter points, but it wasn't enough as the varsity team fell 67-41 to Everett. Leete finished with 28 points, Wiser with 9 and Kelsey Rankin 4.
The girls travel to Marysville Pilchuck Tuesday night then host Getchell Thursday night, then non-league Ferndale on Friday.

GBB 2012-12-08 vs Squalicum
The OHHS Girls Basketball team hosted an admittedly struggling Squalicum team Saturday afternoon in the Wildcat gym and totally dominated in two of the 3 games.
Over in the dome, the Freshmen sprinted to a 24-0 first period lead, led 43-2 at the half and finished with a 63-6 victory. Three Wildcat freshmen finished with double figures - Rosie Mooki with 20, Taylor Deconzo with 14 and Matti Miesle 11. Janae Payne scored 8 as did Kiesha Watts, and Annabelle Whitefoot finished with 2 points.
The JV game wasn't quite the blowout, especially early. At the first horn, Oak Harbor led 8-4, but went on a 12-2 run in the second to take a 20-6 halftime lead, then outscored the Storm 20-4 in the final period to win 54-23. Hayley Lundstrom (13) and Brook Peplinski (11) were in double figures for Oak Harbor, while Jinai Guzman and Kenna Prosch each scored 7, Melanie Callaway and Jessica Hollins each scored 6 and Jamie Estrella scored 4.
In the nightcap, Oak Harbor led 10-9 at the end of the first, but Annie Leete sat most of the 2nd quarter with 3 fouls, and the Storm took advantage of that, going on a 15-6 run to take a 24-16 lead at halftime.
Leete came back in the game after halftime and scored over half of her 20 points in the 3rd period and Oak Harbor went on a 17-1 run to take a 33-25 lead and went on to win 50-43. In addition to Leete's 20 points, Jalani Bobo and Kelsey Rankin scored 8 points each, Ciera Wiser scored 6 as did Natalie Fiallos, with all of Fiallos' points coming from free throws in the 4th period. Her sharp shooting from the line late in the game proved the difference in the game. Jinai Guzman played limited time and scored 2 points.

BBB 2012-12-07 vs Stanwood
The Stanwood Spartans came to town Friday evening and showed why they are one of the top teams in the area, as all 3 teams beat the Wildcats soundly.
The freshman game wasn't too bad at first, with the Wildcats trailing 9-4 at the end of the first quarter, then Stanwood went on a 15-4 run in the second to take a 24-8 halftime lead and held on to win 53-27. Sean Erskine led the team with 11 points and Savion Passmore was also in double digits with 10. Shane Huttula put up 4 points and Fred Miller 2.
The JV game was a blowout from beginning to end. The Oak Harbor boys just couldn't find any rhythm and fell 68-20. Dyllan Harris scored 6, Connor Parmenter and Elijah Smith 4 each, Zach Jones 3, Gage Eccleston 2 and JJ Johnson 1.
The varsity game didn't look good at first, as the Spartans led 9-3 at the first horn, but the Wildcats fought back to take a 12-9 lead. Stanwood then went on a run of their own and although the Spartans led 23-16 at the half, the Wildcats were very much in the game.
Until the 3rd quarter. The Wildcats scored 13 points, but Stanwood more than doubled that with 29 and led 52-29 going into the final period and coasted to a 66-43 win.
There were some good plays in both the JV and varsity games, and some of them are in the video clips posted HERE.
Photos from all 3 teams are posted HERE.

Wrestling 2012-12-06 vs Mt. Vernon
The Wildcat varsity wrestlers improved to 2-0 for the season Thursday night at OHHS with a 46-24 victory over the visiting Mt. Vernon Bulldogs
The Bulldogs brought a large JV contingent. So many, in fact, that some of the matches had to be eliminated so the varsity meet could start.
Seventeen JV matches were wrestled, with the Wildcats winning 10, 4 by pinfall.
OH JV winners were Kylene Ayer, Alexia Mobley, Nina Manning (twice), Nathan Larsen (twice), Sebastian Ceasar, Gage Perner-Runkle, Brody Dedobbelaere and Montana Black.
In the varsity meet, the first two weights were forfeits - one to MV, one to OH. Oak Harbor lost the first two wrestled matches and found themselves behind in team scoring 15-6.
Then the Wildcats got to business. Cody Fakkema needed only 1 minute to pin his opponent, the Jahleel Vester won 10-6 to tie the match at 15 and Jacob Fitzgerald won 16-11 to put the 'Cats up 18-15. Then, in the highlight match of the evening, Mark Johnston needed only 13 seconds to get a pin. Josh Crebbin, CJ Shavers and Jon Lanningham all won by pin to put the match out of reach for the Bulldogs.
Oak Harbor lost two of the final 3 matches, with Ray Quinday getting a first-round pin.
The wrestlers are at home yet again next week, hosting Mt. Vernon again, along with Meadowdale and Glacier Peak in a double dual meet. The JV start time that night is scheduled for 5:30pm.

BBB 2012-12-04 at Snohomish
At Snohomish High School Tuesday night, only one of the 3 Wildcat teams left with a win.
The freshman team, playing in Snohomish's new aux gym struggled against a strong Panther team. The Panthers led 5-1 after the first minute and finished the first quarter leading 15-8. The second quarter really hurt the Wildcats as Snohomish went on a 17-2 run to take a commanding 32-10 halftime lead. The remainder of the game was all Snohomish and the Panthers won 59-20.
In the newly remodeled main gym, the JV team played with the Panthers, but just couldn't quite catch up. The Panthers led 21-15 after the first period and 34-26 at halftime. Still behind in the 4th quarter, but not way down, the Wildcats resorted to fouling to stop the clock, but the Panthers were shooting sharp from the line and finished with a 66-49 win. Dyllan Harris led the Wildcats with 20 points, Zach Jones and Isaiah Rennes each added 10, Elijah Smith 6 and JJ Johnson 3.
Oak Harbor jumped out early in the varsity game, leading 16-9 at the first buzzer, with 12 of those points coming off 3-point bombs by Jojo Webster and Drew Washington, with Drew's 2nd shot from about 10 feet above the key at the buzzer.
Snohomish closed to 16-12 early in the 2nd quarter, but OH pulled away and led 30-19 at halftime. Again, Snohomish crept back into the game, down 45-38 at the end of the 3rd, but the Wildcats held on to win 58-49. Washington led the OH scoring with 26 points and Jojo Webster was also in double figures with 12. Dayne Herron and Chris Hailer both scored 8 and Donavan Sellgren 4.

GBB 2012-11-30 at Mt. Baker
For their first road game of the hear, the Wildcats traveled to Deming to take on the 1A Mt. Baker Mountaineers. Mt. Baker does not have a freshman team so it was a JV/Varsity contest only.
The JV team was a little shaky in the beginning of the game and trailed 13-8 at the end of the first period, but started bringing it together in the second to tie the game at 21 at halftime.
Oak Harbor fell behind in the third, scoring only 5 points and allowed the Mountaineers to build a 34-26 lead. Then, Hayley Lundstrom came alive. Scoring only 3 points for the first 24 minutes, she scored 14 in the 4th period, 6 in the final minute and 4 in the final seconds to tie the game at 48 and force overtime. In the extra period, 5 girls scored points while the defense held Mt. baker to just 6 points. The final was Oak Harbor 62, Mt. Baker 54.
Lundstrom finished with 19 points, Brook Peplinski with 13 and Deja Bunch 11. Taylor Deconzo had 7, Irene Gribble 5, Jessica Hollins 3 and Annabelle Whitefoot and Melanie Callaway scored 2 points each.
Things looked bleak for the varsity squad as Mt. Baker built an 8-0 lead. Oak Harbor didn't score until the 2:45 mark in the first period when Annie Leete sank a free throw. The team recovered a bit but still trailed 18-6 at the end of the first.
The girls got their act together in the second period, holding the Mountaineers to just 7 points and closing the gap to 2 points, 22-20 after Leete shot a 3-pointer with 1:39 left in the half. Mt. Baker led 25-22 at halftime.
OH spotted Mt. Baker a 10-point lead halfway through the 3rd period and with just over a minute left in the period, Mt. Baker led 37-28. A flurry of OH points cut into the lead and the 'Cats trailed 39-36 after 3 periods.
In the final quarter, with 7:15 left, Oak Harbor took their first lead of the game, 40-39 and built it up a bit to 45-41, but Mt. Baker came back and regained their lead 54-53 with one minute left and held on to win 57-53.
Leete scored 24 to lead the team and Jalani Bobo again was in double figures with 10, thanks to an outstanding 75% effort from the free throw line. Ciera Wiser scored 9, Liz Lym 5, Jinai Guzman 3 and Kelsey Rankin 2.
The varsity game was full of fouls, with two Wildcats and two Mountaineers fouling out and four others played to the end of the game with four fouls. Overall the Wildcats were called for 25 fouls and the Mountaineers for 27.
Next up for the girls is a trip to Stanwood next Friday night to open league play, then play Squalicum at home the following day, December 8th.

GBB 2012-11-27 vs Anacortes
Tuesday evening the Oak Harbor girls basketball team kicked off the 2012-2013 season with a trio of games against the Anacortes Seahawks in the OHHS gym.
Starting in the dome with the freshman team, the girls opened big on defense, ending the first period holding an 8-1 lead, behind 6 Rosie Mooki points, but slipped in the second period, allowing the Seahawks to score 10, but the 'Cats held a 13-10 halftime lead. The Wildcat offense went cold in the 3rd, scoring only 4 points, and Anacortes was able to take a 19-17 lead after three. Annabelle Whitefoot scored 5 in the 4th period to help the team close the gap and forced overtime as regulation ended in a 25-25 tie. In OT, the Wildcats were able to score only 2 points while Anacortes hit for 6 to win the game 31-27. Mooki led the scoring with 14 points, Whitefoot finished with 8, Taylor DeConzo 3 and Janae Payne 1.
At the same time the freshmen were in the dome, the JV squad was in the main gym. After a slow start, the girls played a good first quarter, which ended with the Wildcats on top 9-7. At that point the offense seemed to vanish as Anacortes went on a 12-0 run to build a 21-11 lead. The first OH score in the 2nd period came with just 3 minutes left and at halftime the Seahawks were up 26-14. The offense recovered after halftime, scoring 11 points in the 3rd, but the defense allowed 19, giving Anacortes a commanding 45-25 lead to start the final period. Anacortes turned down the heat in the 4th, scoring only 4 points, but still won 49-36.
On the plus side, two experienced players who were not eligible for the game due to lack of required practices will return for the next game, and Oak Harbor scoring was well distributed, with 8 of 9 players getting on the board. Deja Bunch scored 8 points, Irene Gribble, Kenna Prosch and Brook Peplinski each scored 6, Jessica Hollins and Jamie Estrella 3 each, and Kyla Bernardo and Melanie Callaway 2 each.
In the varsity game, Kelsey Rankin scored the first points of the season on an assist by Ciera Wiser, but it took nearly 3 minutes to do so and at the end of the first quarter it was Anacortes 14, OH 8. OH improved a bit in the 2nd quarter, scoring 14 points, but Anacortes still led 29-22 at halftime.
In the 3rd quarter, the Wildcat defense stiffened, allowing only 9 points as the team crawled to within 1 point at the end of the 3rd quarter, trailing 38-37 after having led 35-34 with 1:45 remaining.
The Wildcats grabbed a 45-44 lead on a pair of Liz Lym free throws halfway through the 4th, building the lead to 50-46 with 1:30 remaining, then held off a late Anacortes charge to win 54-51.
Annie Leete led the scoring with 23 points and Jalani Bobo was also in double figures with 11. Kelsey Rankin and Ciera Wiser each finished with 7 points and Lym scored 6.
Friday the girls travel to Mt. Baker HS then get a week off, returning the next Friday for a game at Stanwood. Their next home game is December 12th against Everett.
