Eagle Run 2013

As part of the 2013 Holland Happening celebration, the Oak Harbor Christian School sponsored the annual Eagle Run at Windjammer Park.  While the majority of the 122 5k runners were from Oak Harbor and Coupeville, there were a sprinkling of runners from Anacortes, Burlington and even Marysville.  One runner listed his hometown as Knoxville, TN!

Before the 5k, though, was the 1-mile fun run.  This was a run for all ages, no official times were kept, but there were prizes galore for all the finishers.

Photos from the 1-mile fun run are posted HERE.

Now to the 5k run.  This year's winner was Oak Harbor's Andrew Wyman, who finished the course in 16:34.  He had a while to wait, as it was over two minutes later that the second finisher crossed the line, and that was Oak Harbor's 14-yar-old Miguel Guzman, finishing in 18:35.  It was ANOTHER two full minutes before #3 came in, 13-year-old Tyler Grehan with a time of 20:49.  The final racer, age 6, crossed the line at 45:29.

Top 3 adult males
Andrew Wyman, 40, Oak Harbor, 16:34

Boys Soccer 2013-04-23 vs Everett

While the final score was only 1-0 in favor of Oak Harbor, it was a monster win.  Not only did the Wildcats guarantee themselves a spot in the playoffs, they did it with 3 games to play still, and have a chance to earn 2nd place and a home playoff game.

Caley Powers scored the only goal for Oak Harbor.

In the JV game, there was no score until after halftime, when the Seagulls were able to sneak 3 shots past the OH keeper to win 3-0.

Oak Harbor has only a single home game left, and is the final game of the season.  Pilchuck comes to town on May 1st, so come cheer the boys on to victory and a possible home playoff game!

Photos from the JV and varsity games are posted HERE.

Softball update

It's a very busy week for the Softball Wildcats with games every day except Thursday.

Monday the team traveled to Mountlake Terrace for a varsity only game and came away on the short end of a 6-0 score.  The next day the varsity girls rebounded by thumping the visiting Shorewood Thunderbirds 10-0 in five innings.  (At the same time the JV squad was dominating their game over at Hillcrest.  The final score isn't posted, but the game ended early due to the 10-run rule).

Wednesday the girls traveled to Ferndale and were defeated 14-3. (The JV score isn't available).

Thursday the teams get a day off, then Friday swing back into action with a trip to Marysville-Getchell.

The Wildcats have two more home games this season - April 30th against Everett, then May 8th hosting Pilchuck.  If the weather is decent, the Varsity squad plays at the new field next to the baseball field, while the JV squad plays over at Hillcrest Elementary.

Photos from the JV game vs Shorewood are posted HERE.

Girls Tennis update

It's been a busy two weeks for the girls tennis team with lots of back-to-back matches.

On April 15th the varsity squad hosted Glacier Peak and were swept 7-0 by the visitors.  The next day they traveled to Shorewood with nearly the same result.  Although the T-birds won 6-1, 1st doubles Chelsea Admire and Jamie Estrella went to tiebreaker in the 3rd set before falling, and 3rd doubles Cat Amsler and Brittany Rigby won in 3 sets, 6-4, 2-6, (10-6)

Then, on April 22nd the Wildcats hosted the South Whidbey Falcons in a nonleague matchup.  The Falcons have a strong team, with their #1 singles player having experience at the state championships.  Again, though, a strong showing by the 3rds and 4ths compensated for the SW strength and OH won the match 4-3.  Faith Frannsen won 6-2, 6-1 and Brittany Rigby won 6-3, 6-0.  In doubles, Zena Husler and Alyssa Eden on 7-6(2) and 6-1 while Amsler teamed up with Hannah Gluth to win 7-5, 6-1.

April 23rd the score was reversed, with visiting Everett picking up the 4-3 win.  Franssen grabbed the only OH victory at singles, winning 6-3, 6-3, while 1st singles Admire and Estrella won 6-1, 6-2 and 3rd doubles Rigby and Amsler win 6-3, 7-5.

Wednesday night, playing for the 3rd day in a row, the 'Cats traveled to Getchell for another tough 4-3 loss.  Brittany Rigby smashed her opponent 6-0, 6-0 at 4th singles, and both 1st doubles (Admire/Estrella) and 2nd doubles (Husler/Eden) won their matches.

The girls hit the road today, Thursday with a trip to Stanwood, then finish out the season with two home meets: Monday the 29th vs Shorecrest and Wednesday May 1st against Pilchuck.

Against South Whidbey, the JV squad nearly swept the Falcons, winning 6-1.  AnnaBelle Whitefoot, Megan Mitchell and Jessica Ganswig all won in straight sets in singles, while Erina Horikawa needed to go to 3 sets, then into a tiebreaker in that 3rd set before winning 2-6, 7-6, 7-5(10-8).  Patrice Woodwroth and Irysh Concepcion won at 1st doubles, 6-3, 3-6, 10-7 and Ria Bains and Ellysa Bonganay won at 2nd doubles 6-3, 6-3.

At Everett, the JV girls picked up another 6-1 win.  At doubles, 2nd doubles (Bains and Bonganay) won 6-2, 6-2 and 3rd doubles (Hanna Keyes and Ajoney Smalls) won 6-3, 7-6, 7-5.  All four singles players were again winners, with Horikawa again not wanting her matches to end.  She lost the first set 6-7(4-7 tiebreaker), then won the next two 6-4, 10-6 to win the match.

The JV girls are at home today, Thursday, for their final home match.

Doubles action photos vs South Whidbey are posted HERE.

Little League softball 2013-04-13

After a chilly and damp Opening Day ceremony at City Beach, the sun came out (sort of), and a game was played!

Up at the Vanderzicht Pool fields, the Major Softball Mariners and Angels faced off.  At first, it looked like it would be a Mariners blowout as they led 17-4 early in the game.  But the Angels were not to be denied.  Chipping away at the lead, the Angels got the score difference to under 10 runs to ensure the game would go past 4 innings, and in the bottom of the 5th had closed the gap to just 4 runs, 31-27.  Although the Angels gave it their best effort, the Mariners had a big 6th inning to win the game 42-33.

Over 100 photos from the game are posted HERE.

Boys soccer 2013-04-12 vs Mountlake Terrace

The OH boy soccer team remained in a tie with Getchell for 2nd place in the WESCO 3A North standings with a 2-0 win over visiting Mountlake Terrace Friday night.

The JV went first at 5:30, and although they played a tough game, two goals slipped through, handing the Wildcats a 2-0 loss.  There are 3 home games left for the JV boys, this Saturday against a 0-8 Arlington squad, next Tuesday against 0-5-2 Everett and ending on May 1st against 2-4-1 Pilchuck.

Both the Varsity goals were scored in the first half, both with assists by Dakota Powers.  The first was to his brother Caley in the 29th minute, the other to Matt Jensen in the 22nd minute.  Kevin Silveria in goal recorded the shutout for Oak Harbor.

The varsity team's final 3 opponents have a combined 2 wins for the season, so things are looking up for a playoff spot for the long-denied Wildcats.

Tuesday afternoon the JV baseball team hosted Stanwood in the first of their 3-game series and came away winners.

Girls Tennis - Week ending 4-12

Tuesday afternoon both the JV and Varsity girls tennis team hosted the Mountlake Terrace Hawks at the OHHS tennis courts.

Oak Harbor played minus some key players, including the #1 and #2 singles players, and partly as a result of that, the Hawks left the island winning all the matches in straight sets and taking the day 7-0.

Zena Husler at 4th singles played a very tough first set before falling 7-5, the 1st doubles team of Chelsea Admire and Jamie Estrella lost their first set 6-3 and fought hard in the second, but lost 7-5.

After losing their first set 6-0, the 2nd doubles team of Dallas Breilein and McKinley Kellogg bounced back in the second set and took their opponents into 3 tiebreakers before falling 7-6(3).

Photos are posted here, of all the singles players and 1st and 2nd doubles.

The JV girls took the court after the varsity team and exacted some revenge, hitting the visitors with a 6-1 loss.   AnnaBelle Whitefoot stomped her opponent 6-1, 6-1.  2nd singles Jessica Ganswig was almost as dominant, winning 6-1, 6-2 as was Megan Mitchell at 4th singles, 6-0, 6-1.  In doubles it was an OH sweep.  1st Doubles  Ria Bains & Ellysa Bonganay won 7-5, 2-6, 10-8, 2nd Doubles Irysh Concepeion & Patrice Woodworth won 6-4, 6-2 and 3rd Doubles Ajoney Smalls & Hanna Keyes won 6-0, 6-1

Little League Baseball 2013-04-08

On a nearly perfect day for baseball, the North Whidbey Little League kicked off the 2013 season with a set of games at the City Beach fields.

We were able to get over to the Major game - the Angels vs the Dodgers.

Saturday at 9am at City Beach field "A", the official start of the season will take place with the ceremonial 'first pitch' at 9:30am sharp.  It's quite the spectacle, so if you can come down, it's worth it.

Baseball 2013-04-05 Varsity vs Getchell

Friday afternoon the rain stopped long enough for the Wildcats to get in a complete game against the Marysville Getchell Chargers.  The Wildcats split the first two games, one each at home and away, and wrapped up the 3-game series at OHHS.

Getchell struck first, getting two runs, but OH came back to score 8 runs to win the game 8-3 and win the series 2-1.

Boys Soccer 2013-04-03 vs Glacier Peak

On Wednesday, the Wildcats hosted league-leading Glacier Peak to Wildcat Memorial Stadium.

In the JV game, the Grizzlies demonstrated their skill and experience by defeating the 'Cats 4-0.

The varsity game was an entirely different critter.

GP surprised the Wildcats by scoring a quick goal in the first minute of play, but 6 minutes later Gavin Stewart tied the game on a penalty kick and the half ended in a 1-1 tie.

Early in the second half, after an OH throw-in, Caley Powers took a shot from about 15 yards out that bounced off the crossbar of the goal, but Matt Jensen was in the right position - centered, about 5 yards out - and whacked the ball over the head of the GP keeper to put OH up 2-1.

Glacier Peak tied the game with about 12 minutes left, then, very late in the game, a Wildcat player was called for a hand ball inside the keeper's box, setting up an Glacier Peak penalty kick.  The kick went in and the 'Cats just didn't have enough time to get another goal to force OT and lost 3-2.

The next home game for the boys isn't until Tuesday the 23rd when the host the Everett Seagulls.

A short video clip of Jensen's goal is posted HERE.

Softball 2013-04-01 vs Stanwood

It was an up and down day for both the JV and Varsity squads as they took on the visiting Stanwood Spartans Monday afternoon.

Over at Hillcrest Elementary, the JV team gave up 3 runs in the top of the 1st inning, but the JV gals roared back by batting around the order in the bottom of the inning, scoring 6 runs before the inning was called due to the 5-run rule.  By the 4th inning the 'Cats had increased their lead to 11-4 and went on to win 16-6 in 5 innings.

Over on the new varsity field at the high school, the Varsity squad led 3-0 going into the final innings, but in the top of the 7th, Stanwood got 4 runs across the plate to take a 4-3 lead.  Oak Harbor was able to score in the bottom of the 7th to force extra innings.  In the top of the 8th, Stanwood scored another 3, but this time the 'Cats came up short and lost the game 7-4.

Photos from the game are posted HERE.
