Wrestling 2016-02-20 - State Tournament

Everyone won.

All six Oak Harbor High School wrestlers who traveled to Tacoma this weekend for the state tourney captured at least one victory on the mat, with three 'Cats bringing home medals.

Junior Sam Zook was the star, claiming a third-place finish at 285 pounds, while 'Cat senior Dymond Piper (152) and junior Meredith Bain (190) both finished seventh.

Oak Harbor claimed 19th place in the boys' 3A team standings (out of 60 teams), while fellow Wesco North rival Arlington won the crown at Mat Classic XXVIII. Edmonds-Woodway was 4th.

The Wildcats were 65th in the girls tourney, which combines wrestlers from all classifications. 124 schools were represented.

Wrestling 2016-02-13 - Regional tournaments

Six is the magic number.

Or, with a little luck, it could be eight.

The Oak Harbor High School wrestling squad sent 10 grapplers to districts Saturday and emerged with two individual champions and four other state meet qualifiers.

Two other 'Cats earned alternate spots and would go if a wrestler ahead of them can't compete next weekend in Tacoma.

Oak Harbor edged Glacier Peak to nab fourth in the team standings at districts, with Arlington cruising to the title over a 15-school field.

Sam Zook (285) and Dymond Piper (152), who had been champions at sub-regionals, repeated at districts.

Piper ripped off a pair of pins, then won a 12-5 decision in the final, while Zook pinned his first foe in 25 seconds, then won a pair of hard-fought decisions.

Joining them at state will be Caitlin Woodworth (2nd at 155), Meredith Bain (3rd at 190), Blake Servatius (4th at 106) and Zach Aketch (4th at 145).

Garrett Stahl (113) and Blake McBride (126) both finished 5th and are alternates, while Michael Lym (6th at 132) and Nick Dugin (DNP at 170) were eliminated.

GBB 2016-02-10 - playoff tiebreaker vs Everett

Win. Move on. Win. Move on.

It's worked so far for the Oak Harbor High School girls' basketball team, which has kept its season alive with back-to-back victories over Everett.

After bouncing the Seagulls 39-38 in the regular season finale Tuesday, the Wildcats returned to their home court less than 24 hours later and drilled Everett again Wednesday, this time 43-33.

The victories lifted the 'Cats to 8-13, gave them the #4 seed out of the Wesco North, and sends them to Edmonds-Woodway Thursday.

Win there and they're off to the district tourney. Lose and the road finally runs out.

Fighting to stay alive but a bit tired Wednesday, both teams came out slowly on the offensive end.

With Bryn Langrock and Julie Jansen dropping in three-balls, Oak Harbor clung to a narrow 6-4 lead after one quarter of play.

Then the 'Cats made their move, riding a big second-quarter performance from Janae Payne, who dropped in seven of her game-high 11 right before halftime.

Spurred by her play Oak Harbor used a 16-7 run to stake itsself to an 11-point bulge at the half, then coasted home for the win.

The Wildcats used five treys to offset a slow night at the free throw line, where they netted just four of seven shots. Everett had more chances, but had little touch, going 7-17.

Langrock banked home 10 to back up Payne, while Jansen dropped nine, Deja Bunch hit for six, Rashanna Graham knocked down four and AnnaBelle Whitefoot tickled the twines for three.

BBB 2016-02-08 vs Everett

The final memory will be a sweet one.

Sparked by departing star Dyllan Harris, the Oak Harbor High School boys basketball squad rolled past visiting Everett 70-60 Monday to cap a rough season.

The victory, the second in their final four games, lifted the Wildcats to 3-17 overall, 2-8 in Wesco North play. They failed to make the playoffs.

In a season of close losses -- seven defeats were by just a handful of points, with three conference games slipping away in the final minute -- getting a bit of revenge against the Seagulls puts a positive spin on things.

The first time the squads met, Everett ran away with a win in overtime.

This time out, the 'Cats snatched the lead early in the first quarter and never relinquished it.

Down 6-2 in the very early going, Oak Harbor used a 13-2 surge to turn the tide of the game. Diangelo McKinney dropped the dagger, with a trey that sent the Wildcats into the first break up 15-10.

OHHS stretched the lead out to 13, before Everett took advantage of a huge disparity in fouls to cut away at the margin.

The Wildcats turned the tables in the fourth, draining 10 free throws in the fourth quarter to seal the deal.

Harris finished a spectacular four-year run with more than 1,000 points, going out with 24 points and eight rebounds in his last time in the purple and gold.

Sean Erskine added 17 and nine caroms.

Adam Nelson and McKinney both dropped in nine, Josh Cote banged away for seven and Ozell Jackson (2) and Preston Rankin (2) also scored for Oak Harbor.

Savion Hollins-Passmore ripped down eight boards as Oak Harbor dominated on the glass.

Third quarter kills JV:

A close game at the half turned into a romp after the break, as Everett ran away with a 47-33 win.

The Seagulls were up just 22-19 after two quarters, but used a 17-8 run in the third quarter to flatten the Wildcats.

Marcus Carr banked home 11 to lead Oak Harbor, while Haven Brown (6), Gavin Allen (5), Gabe Salinger (4), Joseph Arinaza (3), Justin Ellison (2) and Weston Whitefoot (2) also scored.

C-Team wins from the line:

If you love free throws, the freshman game was a classic, as Oak Harbor shot 43 times from the stripe -- including an astonishing 23 in just one quarter -- on its way to a 70-55 victory.

Everett actually came quite strongly, taking an 18-11 lead after one quarter.

After that it was all Oak Harbor, as the 'Cats used a 16-9 second to pull even, a 19-14 third to take the lead and a 24-14 fourth to put the game on ice.

With Everett fouling like crazy in the final two minutes in an effort to get back in the game, the Wildcats spent a considerable amount of time at the charity stripe.

They converted 15-23 in the fourth, knocking down 27-43 on the night. The Seagulls were a much more modest 4-9.

Dorian Hardin sparked OHHS with 16, while Terrell Crumpton slid in 13, Kevin Schuldt popped for 11 and Austin Boesch tickled the twines for 10.

Ben Knoll (8), Andrew Baloy (5) Nathanael Thompson (3), Evan Nadeau (2) and Ashton Prats (2) also got in the scoring column.

Wrestling 2016-02-05-6 - Sub-Regional tournament at Stanwood

Eleven Wildcats still alive. Or maybe 10.

That's where it stands for the Oak Harbor High School wrestling squad after the first round of the postseason.

Eight 'Cat boys and two girls made it through sub-regionals Saturday, claiming a top four finish and punching their ticket to next weekend's regional tourney.

One additional OHHS male grappler finished fifth, making him an alternate.

Despite sending just two girls, Oak Harbor finished 12th out of 29 teams thanks to both Caitlin Woodworth and Meredith Bain claiming second-place finishes in their weight classes.

Mount Baker, which had six finalists, won the girls team title.

The Wildcats boys were fifth out of seven teams in their competition, led by weight-class championships from Sam Zook (285) and Dymond Piper (152).

As a team, Oak Harbor won 38 matches and lost 41, while Wesco North rival Arlington romped to the team title, going 72-32.

Both of the 'Cat champs ripped through their brackets with a flawless 4-0 record.

Zook, who along with Bain is ranked in the top 10 in the state in his class, won three matches by pin after getting an opening-round bye.

Regionals will be held Saturday, Feb. 13 at Squalicum (girls) and Marysville-Pilchuck (boys). The top four in each weight class there will advance to state.

BBB 2016-02-01 vs Getchell

The candle is still flickering, but almost blown out.

Coming off a double-digit loss to visiting Marysville-Getchell on Senior Night Monday, the Oak Harbor High School boys' basketball team will need a miracle to make the postseason.

Now 2-16 overall, 1-7 in Wesco play after falling 63-51 to the Chargers, the 'Cats would need to win their final two games, have Arlington lose all three games left on its schedule and see Getchell lose to Stanwood to have even a small shot at a playoff berth.

All that breaks just right and Oak Harbor would end in a three-way tie for fourth-place in the North division of Wesco and face off with Arlington and Getchell in a tie-breaker.

Win that and the Wildcats would play the South division's #4 squad for the league's final postseason seed.

If Oak Harbor wants to get anywhere close to that, it will need to cut down on the turnovers, which stung them badly against MG.

Clinging to a 30-28 lead with a little over four minutes left in the third, the Wildcats wilted against Getchell’s half-court trap.

Taking advantage of a string of turnovers, the Chargers went on a 13-0 rampage, with five straight buckets coming off of Oak Harbor errors.

Trailing by as many as 16 in the fourth quarter, the 'Cats made several mini-runs, but were unable to get the margin back under 10.

'Cat senior Dyllan Harris made a strong showing, raining down 25 when he wasn't stuck on the bench with foul trouble. Marysville's Cody Day responded by pumping home a game-high 32.

Sean Erskine backed Harris with nine, while Adam Nelson (7), Diangelo McKinney (6), Josh Cote (2) and Ozell Jackson (2) also scored.

It was the final home game for OHHS seniors Harris, Erskine, McKinney, Bryce Diras, Darnell Dizon, Savion Hollins-Passmore and Preston Rankin.

JV romps:

Riding a game-high 21 from Gabe Salinger, the Wildcats stormed to a 54-42 win.

Oak Harbor jumped out to a 12-9 lead after one, then never looked back, steadily building the lead from there.

Weston Whitefoot banked home 10 in support of Salinger, while Joseph Arinaza swished eight and Haven Brown popped for six. Gavin Allen (4), Justin Ellison (3) and Marcus Carr (2) rounded out the 'Cat attack.

C-Team nipped:
Oak Harbor's freshmen came up just short, falling 63-59 in a game that was decided during a frantic fourth quarter.

The game was tied at 40 after three, but Getchell got hot from long-range and peppered the 'Cats for 23 in the final eight minutes to claim the victory.

Dorian Hardin dropped in 13 to pace OH, while Andrew Baloy tickled the twines for 10.

Terrell Crumpton (9), Austin Boesch (8), Ben Knoll (8), Kevin Schuldt (7), Ashton Prats (3) and Evan Nadeau (1) also scratched their names into the score-book.

Wrestling 2016-01-26 vs Anacortes

Oak Harbor went from no opponent to half an opponent.

After Stanwood suddenly cancelled on the Wildcats, thanks to a wild mix of bad grades, injuries and athletic code violations, Anacortes stepped in to make sure OHHS would be able to still hold Senior Night Tuesday.

The Seahawks only filled seven of the 14 weight classes, and with five wins in the seven contested bouts, Oak Harbor sailed to a 62-12 win.

The victory lifted the 'Cats to 6-4 on the season, with a final Wesco match at Marysville-Getchell Thursday.

Of those who did wrestle, Sam Zook was the star on the night, winning 4-2 in overtime against Kiron Devine at 285 pounds.

Zook, who is undefeated this season, is ranked fourth in the state among 3A wrestlers, while Devine is ninth in class 2A.

Before the match, the Wildcats honored seniors Stahl, Dymond Piper, Field, Martin Power, Amber Cramsey-Behnke and manager Mily Larsen.

Oak Harbor also received the Gary Knutzen Spirit of Wrestling Award for the second time in the last four years.

The award, given by the Skagit-Island Wrestling Officials Association, honors the Wildcats and coach Larry Falcon for an "outstanding display of sportsmanship throughout the season."

Knutzen was a longtime wresting official and head coach at Skagit Valley College.

This weekend marks the beginning of wrestling's post-season, with the boys sub-regional tournament on Friday and Saturday at Stanwood High School and the girls at Bellingham High School.

BBB 2016-01-19 vs Pilchuck

Dyllan Harris was hot, Josh Bevan was hotter.

The Marysville-Pilchuck sharpshooter won the personal battle, dropping 34, including six treys, on host Oak Harbor Tuesday night, propelling the visiting Tomahawks to a 74-60 boys basketball win.

Harris banged home 27 of his own for the Wildcats, but it wasn't enough to prevent OHHS from slipping to 1-13 overall, 0-4 in Wesco play.

Marysville improved to 4-9 overall and at 3-1 sits in a second-place tie in the league standings.

The Tomahawks did most of their damage in the first half, rolling out to a 43-29 halftime bulge. After dropping in 20 in the third (they hit for 22 and 21 in the first half), Marysville coasted in for the win.

Oak Harbor, which claimed a small moral victory by "winning" the fourth quarter 15-11, got a big game from Sean Erskine, who rattled home 16 to back up Harris.

Diangelo McKinney (7), Ozell Jackson (4), Adam Nelson (3) and Josh Cote (3) rounded out the 'Cat scorers.

JV nipped:
Oak Harbor staged a second-half rally, but couldn't quite get all the way back in a narrow 54-48 loss.

Marysville put the game out of reach with a 36-22 lead at the half, before the Wildcats began slicing away at the lead.

The third quarter was their best of the night, with the 'Cats rolling to a 12-5 advantage.

Jordan Bell notched a team-high 16, while Joseph Arinaza banked home nine.

Haven Brown (7), Gabe Salinger (6), TJ Hollins-Passmore (4), Justin Ellison (3), Marcus Carr (2) and Weston Whitefoot (1) also scored.

C-Team romps:

It was completely the opposite story in the freshman game, as Oak Harbor used a big first half to roll to a win.

Up 15-6 after one, the 'Cats broke things open for good with a 22-9 run in the second quarter.

Oak Harbor got scoring from 10 different players, with Dorian Hardin leading the way with 12.

Terrell Crumpton (9), Kevin Schuldt (6), Andrew Baloy (7), Evan Nadeau (6), Kanoa King (6), Nathanael Thompson (4), Austin Boesch (3), Cody Fenton (2) and Trevor Mondor (2) also penciled their names into the scoring column.

Youth Wrestling 2016-01-17 - Wildcat Novice Showdown

It's what the newest grapplers in the Whidbey Wildcat Wrestling Club did this past weekend as the hosts dominated the Wildcat Novice Showdown.

Four wrestlers -- Ethan Hunsaker, Logan Clairmont, Tiaan Des Fountain and Parker Anderson -- swept through their weight classes to capture championships.

13 other Whidbey wrestlers claimed second place.

The tourney was for wrestlers in their first or second season of competition.

Wrestling 2016-01-14 vs Arlington

For three matches, it had the look of an epic upset.

With two wins in the first three bouts Thursday night, the Oak Harbor High School wrestling squad had fourth-ranked Arlington on its heels.

Then the Eagles flipped a switch and showed just why they are ranked so highly among 3A schools, ripping off ten straight wins -- eight by pin -- to savage the Wildcats 62-15.

Oak Harbor had opened strongly, getting wins at 113 from Zion Gomez and 120 from Garrett Stahl, but then there was a long dry spell before Sam Zook closed the match with a win by fall at 285.

The 'Cats almost pulled off a stunner at 152, however.

Dymond Piper came dangerously close to upending Cooper McAusian, currently the second-ranked 3A grappler in his weight class.

McAusian, who claimed 5th at state a year ago, used a reversal and near fall in the final seconds to eke out a narrow 11-8 win.

Before the match, Oak Harbor honored longtime wrestling coach Rich Linsenmayer, who guided the program from 1969-1998.

The school dedicated its mat room to him and presented his widow, Myrna, with a plaque which will hang at the entrance. All of the Wildcat wrestlers greeted the coach's wife one-on-one before the match.

BBB 2016-01-08 vs Stanwood

They probably should have called it after one quarter.

The only thing which saved the Oak Harbor High School boys' basketball squad Friday was the running clock -- which was already in use before halftime.

Surrendering an astonishing 34 first-quarter points, and then another 28 over the next eight minutes, the Wildcats went to the locker room trailing visiting Stanwood 62-13.

Things were marginally better in the second half, but, with time flying by, Oak Harbor had little chance to cut away at the lead, eventually falling 82-37.

The conference loss dropped the 'Cats to 1-9, but just 0-1 in North Wesco play.

Stanwood hit from everywhere in the first quarter, dropping in 14 field goals, including a pair of treys, and four free-throws.

Dyllan Harris paced Oak Harbor with 10, while Adam Nelson banked home seven and Josh Cote popped for six.

Savion Hollins-Passmore (5), Darnell Dizon (5), Taeson Hardin (2), Diangelo McKinney (1) and Ozell Jackson (1) rounded out the scorers.

JV falls at end:

Down by just one entering the fourth, the Wildcat JV was outscored 19-9 over the final eight minutes and fell 55-44.

After falling behind 18-12 after one, Oak Harbor played Stanwood even in the second, then won the third 13-8 to set up what it had hoped would be a photo finish.

TJ Hollins-Passmore went for 13 to lead the 'Cats, while Gabe Salinger backed him up with nine.

Jordan Bell (8), Marcus Carr (5), Justin Ellison (4), Haven Brown (2), Weston Whitefoot (2) and Joseph Arinaza (1) also got their names in the score book.

C-Team nipped:

It started as a rout, turned into a battle, and ended as a heart-breaker.

The Wildcat freshman roared out to a 14-5 lead after one, but couldn't keep it up, eventually losing 60-58.

Stanwood chipped away all night, getting back five in the second quarter, three more in the third, than icing the game with a 19-16 fourth-quarter advantage.

Austin Boesch and Dorian Hardin each hit for nine to lead Oak Harbor, while three players -- Kevin Schuldt, Ben Knoll and Trevor Mondor -- scored seven apiece.

Kanoa King and Terrell Crumpton each swished six, Ashton Prates rolled to three and Evan Nadeau and Andrew Baloy both added a bucket to top things off.

Wrestling 2016-01-07 at Pilchuck

Talent beat reputation.

Shrugging off Marysville-Pilchuck's #18 ranking in the most recent 3A state wrestling polls, Oak Harbor bounced the Tomahawks 39-27 on their own mats Thursday.

The league victory lifted the Wildcats, who are unranked, to 5-2 overall, 1-0 in Wesco North action.

Rolling early, Oak Harbor claimed wins in eight of the first ten matches contested to build an insurmountable lead.

After an appearance at this weekend's Shoreline Invitational, the 'Cats will get a true challenge Thursday, Jan. 14, when it hosts undefeated, second-ranked Arlington.

GBB 2016-01-05 vs Melbourne Mystics

The Aussies are here and they're taking no prisoners.

The Melbourne Mystics, a traveling girls' basketball squad, hit Whidbey Island Tuesday and handily won their fifth straight game on their American tour.

Running host Oak Harbor (and the refs) ragged, the Mystic sailed to an 80-38 victory.

"Our pressure was sensational," said Melbourne coach Christian Impey. "We were fast up and down the court.

"I even think  the refs found it hard to keep up with the game; it was a good work-out for them," he added with a good-natured laugh.

Melbourne, which carries two seniors and seven juniors on its roster, mainly plays club ball at home, where they capped 2015 off by winning the title in the Vic Championship Reserves.

That's the highest level for their age group.

When they're on their home continent, many of the Mystic players also play for a senior program in the state of Victoria. That team is the Keilor Thunder.

Since setting down in the Northwest corner of America in late December, the Aussies have been busy blitzing the locals.

They opened by winning the Crush in the Slush tourney in Port Townsend, knocking off the host RedHawks and Nooksack Valley.

"Our girls were on fire," Impey said. "They are a great team and play very tough defense and pressure both ends of the floor."

After that came wins against Everett (where they dropped 27 in the third quarter) and Cascade, before the Mystic showed up in Oak Harbor.

Melbourne will get perhaps its toughest test Wednesday, when it faces off with always-powerful King's in Seattle.

"I have been told that the game is going to be a real tough game and a real challenge, which the girls are really looking forward to and so am I as the coach," Impey said. "Good luck to both teams; I have complete confidence in our ability to play the game hard and fast."

Oak Harbor managed to hang with Melbourne for one quarter, but couldn't match the pace.

Down just 16-9 after the first eight minutes, they were drilled 23-13, 22-10 and 19-6 over the final three quarters of play.

Eight of Melbourne's nine players scored, with five in double figures.

Stella McRobbie paced the Mystics with 15, while Zoe Kelty knocked down 14, Cassie Favero hit for 13, Alyssa O'Shea popped for 11 and Amy Smith dropped in 10.

Brittany Seit (8), Alex McKellar (5) and Meg McGrath (4) rounded out the Aussie scorers, while Courtney McCormack also saw floor time.

Oak Harbor got scoring from seven players, but failed to get anyone out of single digits.

Janae Payne and Julie Jansen paced the Wildcats with eight apiece, while Deja Bunch (6), Bryn Langrock (5), Hannah Taylor (4), Lexi Jones (4) and AnnaBelle Whitefoot (3) all scored.

While he's pleased with the winning streak, Impey is also thrilled to get a chance to help his players experience a different world.

"The girls are a great bunch of kids that really train hard, play hard and enjoy their basketball," he said. "The teams that we have played can vouch for that about them.

"We would like to thank all the teams for their support and taking our girls in and showing them the American life style."

GBB 2015-12-28 and 28 - Mt. Vernon Tournament

They started strong, but couldn't keep it going.

After opening the two-day Bulldog Holiday Classic with a big win, the Oak Harbor High School girls' basketball team came up short in the championship game.

The Wildcats, behind a stellar defense, blasted Vashon Island 42-13 in their opener, then were nipped 44-31 by host Mount Vernon the next day.

Oak Harbor, now 4-5, played without two starters in the second game, due to a concussion and a family obligation.

The 'Cats shredded 1A Vashon with ease, jumping out to a quick 11-1 lead after one quarter.

Seven of the eight Oak Harbor players who suited up scored, led by Bryn Langrock, who dropped in a game-high 12.

Deja Bunch hit for 11, Julie Jansen tossed in seven while Matti Miesle (4), Janae Payne (4), Resego Mooki (2) and AnnaBelle Whitefoot (2) also chipped in.

Things didn't go quite as well against the Bulldogs, as the Wildcats fell behind 19-6 after just eight minutes of play.

With Mt. Vernon controlling the game at the line (the Bulldogs hit seven of nine at the charity stripe in the opening quarter and went 14-for-23 for the game), Oak Harbor struggled to find a rhythm.

Payne and Jansen led the Wildcats with eight points each, while Langrock added seven. Bunch banked home six and Mooki tossed in a bucket.

JV drops two:
The Wildcat young guns fell 33-29 to Vashon and 29-25 to Mt. Vernon.

In the opener, Hannah Taylor paced Oak Harbor with 10, while Jordan Wood-Pina hit for nine. Jaden Jesus (5), Alisha Wilson (3) and Piper Fisher (2) rounded out the scoring chart.

No individual stats were available for the second JV game.

BBB 2015-12-28 and 28 - Mt. Vernon Tournament

They're off the schneid.

Splitting games at the Bulldog Holiday Classic in Mount Vernon, the Oak Harbor High School boys' basketball squad finally nabbed its first win of the season.

That victory, a 53-48 triumph over Sedro-Woolley, lifted the Wildcats to 1-8.

It also made up a bit for a tourney-opening 79-57 defeat to Skyline a day earlier.

Oak Harbor was led, as it has been all season, by Dyllan Harris, who threw down 64 points over the course of the tournament.

He went off for a career high 40 in the opener, which ties him for the fourth-most ever scored by a 'Cat.

The school record of 49 has stood for more than half a century, ever since OHHS legend Pat McGreevy dropped that total back in 1953.

Harris had the help of something McGreevy never got to use -- the three-point line -- nailing eight treys during his record night.

The one-man show wasn't enough to topple Skyline, but against Sedro he got some help.

The Wildcat defense shackled their foes in the fourth quarter, limiting the Cubs to just five points. Harris dropped in eight of his 24 at the same time.

Sophomore Taeson Hardin, who has been out with an injury, returned to score 12, including a huge late game three-pointer, while Adam Nelson (10), Josh Cote (4), Preston Rankin (2) and Sean Erskine (1) rounded out the 'Cat scorers.

Against Skyline, Oak Harbor fell behind by 22 at the half, then played the Spartans even in the second half.

Rankin banked in four to support Harris and his offensive explosion, while Jordan Bell (3), Diangelo McKinney (3), Cote (2), Ozell Jackson (2) and Savion Hollins-Passmore (2) also scored.

It was the varsity debuts for Bell and Hollins-Passmore.
