BBB 2016-01-19 vs Pilchuck

Dyllan Harris was hot, Josh Bevan was hotter.

The Marysville-Pilchuck sharpshooter won the personal battle, dropping 34, including six treys, on host Oak Harbor Tuesday night, propelling the visiting Tomahawks to a 74-60 boys basketball win.

Harris banged home 27 of his own for the Wildcats, but it wasn't enough to prevent OHHS from slipping to 1-13 overall, 0-4 in Wesco play.

Marysville improved to 4-9 overall and at 3-1 sits in a second-place tie in the league standings.

The Tomahawks did most of their damage in the first half, rolling out to a 43-29 halftime bulge. After dropping in 20 in the third (they hit for 22 and 21 in the first half), Marysville coasted in for the win.

Oak Harbor, which claimed a small moral victory by "winning" the fourth quarter 15-11, got a big game from Sean Erskine, who rattled home 16 to back up Harris.

Diangelo McKinney (7), Ozell Jackson (4), Adam Nelson (3) and Josh Cote (3) rounded out the 'Cat scorers.

JV nipped:
Oak Harbor staged a second-half rally, but couldn't quite get all the way back in a narrow 54-48 loss.

Marysville put the game out of reach with a 36-22 lead at the half, before the Wildcats began slicing away at the lead.

The third quarter was their best of the night, with the 'Cats rolling to a 12-5 advantage.

Jordan Bell notched a team-high 16, while Joseph Arinaza banked home nine.

Haven Brown (7), Gabe Salinger (6), TJ Hollins-Passmore (4), Justin Ellison (3), Marcus Carr (2) and Weston Whitefoot (1) also scored.

C-Team romps:

It was completely the opposite story in the freshman game, as Oak Harbor used a big first half to roll to a win.

Up 15-6 after one, the 'Cats broke things open for good with a 22-9 run in the second quarter.

Oak Harbor got scoring from 10 different players, with Dorian Hardin leading the way with 12.

Terrell Crumpton (9), Kevin Schuldt (6), Andrew Baloy (7), Evan Nadeau (6), Kanoa King (6), Nathanael Thompson (4), Austin Boesch (3), Cody Fenton (2) and Trevor Mondor (2) also penciled their names into the scoring column.

Youth Wrestling 2016-01-17 - Wildcat Novice Showdown

Winning titles and taking names.

It's what the newest grapplers in the Whidbey Wildcat Wrestling Club did this past weekend as the hosts dominated the Wildcat Novice Showdown.

Four wrestlers -- Ethan Hunsaker, Logan Clairmont, Tiaan Des Fountain and Parker Anderson -- swept through their weight classes to capture championships.

13 other Whidbey wrestlers claimed second place.

The tourney was for wrestlers in their first or second season of competition.

Wrestling 2016-01-14 vs Arlington

For three matches, it had the look of an epic upset.

With two wins in the first three bouts Thursday night, the Oak Harbor High School wrestling squad had fourth-ranked Arlington on its heels.

Then the Eagles flipped a switch and showed just why they are ranked so highly among 3A schools, ripping off ten straight wins -- eight by pin -- to savage the Wildcats 62-15.

Oak Harbor had opened strongly, getting wins at 113 from Zion Gomez and 120 from Garrett Stahl, but then there was a long dry spell before Sam Zook closed the match with a win by fall at 285.

The 'Cats almost pulled off a stunner at 152, however.

Dymond Piper came dangerously close to upending Cooper McAusian, currently the second-ranked 3A grappler in his weight class.

McAusian, who claimed 5th at state a year ago, used a reversal and near fall in the final seconds to eke out a narrow 11-8 win.

Before the match, Oak Harbor honored longtime wrestling coach Rich Linsenmayer, who guided the program from 1969-1998.

The school dedicated its mat room to him and presented his widow, Myrna, with a plaque which will hang at the entrance. All of the Wildcat wrestlers greeted the coach's wife one-on-one before the match.

BBB 2016-01-08 vs Stanwood

They probably should have called it after one quarter.

The only thing which saved the Oak Harbor High School boys' basketball squad Friday was the running clock -- which was already in use before halftime.

Surrendering an astonishing 34 first-quarter points, and then another 28 over the next eight minutes, the Wildcats went to the locker room trailing visiting Stanwood 62-13.

Things were marginally better in the second half, but, with time flying by, Oak Harbor had little chance to cut away at the lead, eventually falling 82-37.

The conference loss dropped the 'Cats to 1-9, but just 0-1 in North Wesco play.

Stanwood hit from everywhere in the first quarter, dropping in 14 field goals, including a pair of treys, and four free-throws.

Dyllan Harris paced Oak Harbor with 10, while Adam Nelson banked home seven and Josh Cote popped for six.

Savion Hollins-Passmore (5), Darnell Dizon (5), Taeson Hardin (2), Diangelo McKinney (1) and Ozell Jackson (1) rounded out the scorers.

JV falls at end:

Down by just one entering the fourth, the Wildcat JV was outscored 19-9 over the final eight minutes and fell 55-44.

After falling behind 18-12 after one, Oak Harbor played Stanwood even in the second, then won the third 13-8 to set up what it had hoped would be a photo finish.

TJ Hollins-Passmore went for 13 to lead the 'Cats, while Gabe Salinger backed him up with nine.

Jordan Bell (8), Marcus Carr (5), Justin Ellison (4), Haven Brown (2), Weston Whitefoot (2) and Joseph Arinaza (1) also got their names in the score book.

C-Team nipped:

It started as a rout, turned into a battle, and ended as a heart-breaker.

The Wildcat freshman roared out to a 14-5 lead after one, but couldn't keep it up, eventually losing 60-58.

Stanwood chipped away all night, getting back five in the second quarter, three more in the third, than icing the game with a 19-16 fourth-quarter advantage.

Austin Boesch and Dorian Hardin each hit for nine to lead Oak Harbor, while three players -- Kevin Schuldt, Ben Knoll and Trevor Mondor -- scored seven apiece.

Kanoa King and Terrell Crumpton each swished six, Ashton Prates rolled to three and Evan Nadeau and Andrew Baloy both added a bucket to top things off.

Wrestling 2016-01-07 at Pilchuck

Talent beat reputation.

Shrugging off Marysville-Pilchuck's #18 ranking in the most recent 3A state wrestling polls, Oak Harbor bounced the Tomahawks 39-27 on their own mats Thursday.

The league victory lifted the Wildcats, who are unranked, to 5-2 overall, 1-0 in Wesco North action.

Rolling early, Oak Harbor claimed wins in eight of the first ten matches contested to build an insurmountable lead.

After an appearance at this weekend's Shoreline Invitational, the 'Cats will get a true challenge Thursday, Jan. 14, when it hosts undefeated, second-ranked Arlington.

GBB 2016-01-05 vs Melbourne Mystics

The Aussies are here and they're taking no prisoners.

The Melbourne Mystics, a traveling girls' basketball squad, hit Whidbey Island Tuesday and handily won their fifth straight game on their American tour.

Running host Oak Harbor (and the refs) ragged, the Mystic sailed to an 80-38 victory.

"Our pressure was sensational," said Melbourne coach Christian Impey. "We were fast up and down the court.

"I even think  the refs found it hard to keep up with the game; it was a good work-out for them," he added with a good-natured laugh.

Melbourne, which carries two seniors and seven juniors on its roster, mainly plays club ball at home, where they capped 2015 off by winning the title in the Vic Championship Reserves.

That's the highest level for their age group.

When they're on their home continent, many of the Mystic players also play for a senior program in the state of Victoria. That team is the Keilor Thunder.

Since setting down in the Northwest corner of America in late December, the Aussies have been busy blitzing the locals.

They opened by winning the Crush in the Slush tourney in Port Townsend, knocking off the host RedHawks and Nooksack Valley.

"Our girls were on fire," Impey said. "They are a great team and play very tough defense and pressure both ends of the floor."

After that came wins against Everett (where they dropped 27 in the third quarter) and Cascade, before the Mystic showed up in Oak Harbor.

Melbourne will get perhaps its toughest test Wednesday, when it faces off with always-powerful King's in Seattle.

"I have been told that the game is going to be a real tough game and a real challenge, which the girls are really looking forward to and so am I as the coach," Impey said. "Good luck to both teams; I have complete confidence in our ability to play the game hard and fast."

Oak Harbor managed to hang with Melbourne for one quarter, but couldn't match the pace.

Down just 16-9 after the first eight minutes, they were drilled 23-13, 22-10 and 19-6 over the final three quarters of play.

Eight of Melbourne's nine players scored, with five in double figures.

Stella McRobbie paced the Mystics with 15, while Zoe Kelty knocked down 14, Cassie Favero hit for 13, Alyssa O'Shea popped for 11 and Amy Smith dropped in 10.

Brittany Seit (8), Alex McKellar (5) and Meg McGrath (4) rounded out the Aussie scorers, while Courtney McCormack also saw floor time.

Oak Harbor got scoring from seven players, but failed to get anyone out of single digits.

Janae Payne and Julie Jansen paced the Wildcats with eight apiece, while Deja Bunch (6), Bryn Langrock (5), Hannah Taylor (4), Lexi Jones (4) and AnnaBelle Whitefoot (3) all scored.

While he's pleased with the winning streak, Impey is also thrilled to get a chance to help his players experience a different world.

"The girls are a great bunch of kids that really train hard, play hard and enjoy their basketball," he said. "The teams that we have played can vouch for that about them.

"We would like to thank all the teams for their support and taking our girls in and showing them the American life style."

GBB 2015-12-28 and 28 - Mt. Vernon Tournament

They started strong, but couldn't keep it going.

After opening the two-day Bulldog Holiday Classic with a big win, the Oak Harbor High School girls' basketball team came up short in the championship game.

The Wildcats, behind a stellar defense, blasted Vashon Island 42-13 in their opener, then were nipped 44-31 by host Mount Vernon the next day.

Oak Harbor, now 4-5, played without two starters in the second game, due to a concussion and a family obligation.

The 'Cats shredded 1A Vashon with ease, jumping out to a quick 11-1 lead after one quarter.

Seven of the eight Oak Harbor players who suited up scored, led by Bryn Langrock, who dropped in a game-high 12.

Deja Bunch hit for 11, Julie Jansen tossed in seven while Matti Miesle (4), Janae Payne (4), Resego Mooki (2) and AnnaBelle Whitefoot (2) also chipped in.

Things didn't go quite as well against the Bulldogs, as the Wildcats fell behind 19-6 after just eight minutes of play.

With Mt. Vernon controlling the game at the line (the Bulldogs hit seven of nine at the charity stripe in the opening quarter and went 14-for-23 for the game), Oak Harbor struggled to find a rhythm.

Payne and Jansen led the Wildcats with eight points each, while Langrock added seven. Bunch banked home six and Mooki tossed in a bucket.

JV drops two:
The Wildcat young guns fell 33-29 to Vashon and 29-25 to Mt. Vernon.

In the opener, Hannah Taylor paced Oak Harbor with 10, while Jordan Wood-Pina hit for nine. Jaden Jesus (5), Alisha Wilson (3) and Piper Fisher (2) rounded out the scoring chart.

No individual stats were available for the second JV game.

BBB 2015-12-28 and 28 - Mt. Vernon Tournament

They're off the schneid.

Splitting games at the Bulldog Holiday Classic in Mount Vernon, the Oak Harbor High School boys' basketball squad finally nabbed its first win of the season.

That victory, a 53-48 triumph over Sedro-Woolley, lifted the Wildcats to 1-8.

It also made up a bit for a tourney-opening 79-57 defeat to Skyline a day earlier.

Oak Harbor was led, as it has been all season, by Dyllan Harris, who threw down 64 points over the course of the tournament.

He went off for a career high 40 in the opener, which ties him for the fourth-most ever scored by a 'Cat.

The school record of 49 has stood for more than half a century, ever since OHHS legend Pat McGreevy dropped that total back in 1953.

Harris had the help of something McGreevy never got to use -- the three-point line -- nailing eight treys during his record night.

The one-man show wasn't enough to topple Skyline, but against Sedro he got some help.

The Wildcat defense shackled their foes in the fourth quarter, limiting the Cubs to just five points. Harris dropped in eight of his 24 at the same time.

Sophomore Taeson Hardin, who has been out with an injury, returned to score 12, including a huge late game three-pointer, while Adam Nelson (10), Josh Cote (4), Preston Rankin (2) and Sean Erskine (1) rounded out the 'Cat scorers.

Against Skyline, Oak Harbor fell behind by 22 at the half, then played the Spartans even in the second half.

Rankin banked in four to support Harris and his offensive explosion, while Jordan Bell (3), Diangelo McKinney (3), Cote (2), Ozell Jackson (2) and Savion Hollins-Passmore (2) also scored.

It was the varsity debuts for Bell and Hollins-Passmore.
