Boys Basketball at Monroe - Jan 10, 2009

Last Saturday the boys basketball teams were back in action, taking the long trip to Monroe to take on the Bearcats.

In the Freshman game, the it was close in the first, with Monroe leading 5-4, but the Bearcats went on a 22-11 2nd-period sprint and never looked back, running away with the game 42-33. Matt Burgoyne, Josiah Miller and Kevawn Brooks tied for high scoring honors with 6 each, followed closely by Elias Whitefoot and Edward Denmon with 5 each. Also scoring were Michael Mack 1, Matt Reith 1, Paul Johannsen 3.

The JV team won their first game of the year by a 55-46 score. The Wildcats jumped out to a 12-4 1st period lead and played even with the Bearcats in the 2nd to continue leading, 25-18 at halftime. By the end of the 3rd the ‘Cats built the lead to 10, and held on for the 9-point victory. Colby Anter and Ryan Fakkema had 10 points each to lead the JV squad, followed by Michael Harrison and Nate Young with 9 each. Others on the board were Denzel Hardin 4, Stevie Bratt 2, Trace Paul 2, Connor Paul 3, David Tillotson 1 and Chance Gill 5.

Varsity also jumped to a 1st-period lead 15-10 and held the lead at half 29-26. In the 3rd, however, the Wildcat offense cooled off, scoring only 6 points. The defense was consistent, allowing 14, but the lack of scoring put Oak Harbor into a 40-35 hole at the end of the third. The boys battled back, and with about 30 seconds left were down by only one and had possession of the ball, but intense defensive pressure by Monroe prevented a last-second shot, leaving the final score 50-49 in favor of Monroe. Mike Washington Jr. scored 17 for the Wildcats, with Jay Stout close behind with 15. Aaron Boesch, Beaux Haley and Josh Fikse had 4 each, Phil Nadeau 3 and Rashaad Smith 2. The boys did well from the line, missing only 2 free throws all night.
