Boys Basketball vs Lake Stevens, Jan 30, 2009

It was not a good night at OHHS as the boys basketball teams went a combined 0-3 against their Lake Stevens counterparts.

In the field house, Cavelero (the Lake Stevens 8th & 9th grade school) at both breaks in the first half, 7-4 at the end of 1, and 17-10 at halftime. In the 3rd, Oak Harbor closed to within 5, 31-26, and in the 4th, made it a 4-point game. However, time was running out, and the ‘Cats had to resort to fouls to stop the clock, and Lake Stevens was shooting sharp from the line, winding up with a 52-37 win.

The offense did fairly well in the 1st half of the JV game, scoring 20 points, but on defense allowed 38 points. The roles were reversed in the 2nd half, with the Wildcats able to score 5 points in the 3rd and only 2 points in the 4th, a last-second shot by Chance Gill. The defense did much better, holding Lake Stevens to 6 points in the 3rd and 11 in the 4th, but it was still all Vikings in a 57-29 win.

There were a lot of faces missing from the varsity squad for the game. Jimmy Edens is out for the rest of the season with a broken hand, Josh Fikse has been ill and has been troubled by his knees, Aaron Boesch is out for a while with an injured knee and Zac Cole has been out most of the week with illness. Coach Washington had his players slow the game down on offense, telling them to take their time and make sure of shots rather than shooting right away. It seemed to be working, as even missing some key players the Wildcats ended the 1st period tied 12-12. It was still close at halftime, with Lake Stevens holding a slim 23-18 lead. The teams played fairly even through the 3rd, and the Vikings added 2 points to their lead at the end of the 3rd. The Wildcats were able to close the gap to just 1 point, but Lake Stevens showed why they are the class of the WESCO North, winning the 4th period 21-11 and the game 52-37. The Wildcat scoring was spread among 6 players, none in double figures. Rashaad Smith, a rebounding machine in this game, was also top scorer with 9. Steven Bratt in his first varsity start scored 8, Jay Stout 7, Mike Washington, Jr 6, Colby Anter 3 and Phil Nadeau 2.

The boys have only one home game next week, on Tuesday vs Arlington, but will be at Stanwood on Friday. The following week the boys have two home games, on Monday against Monroe and on Wednesday the 11th against Marysville for Senior Night.

Just 39 images from these games, most of them pictures of the JV players and the JV team. There’s also a few ‘Faces in the crowd” photos as well. They can all be found by clicking HERE.
