In the 2nd day of wrestling at the 2009 Mat Classic in the Tacoma Dome, the Oak Harbor wrestlers still in on day 2 met with some moderate success.
Colton Elliot had a big win in his first match, defeating Nolan Richards from Skyline 14-0, but lost to #1 seed Adam Ferguson from South Kitsap 10-3, sending Colton into the match for 5th place. There he faced Steven Walkley from Lake Stevens. Colton, still nursing his broken thumb, battled, but Walkley was able to pin Colton in 4:02. Colton finished the tournament in 6th place, and will be back next year, healthy, in a quest for a State Championship.
Tina Alter, after winning both first day matches, did not fare as well on day 2. Her first match was against #1 seed Alyssa Calhoon from West Valley (Yakima), who earned a tech fall over Tina 17-0 with just 1 second left in the match. Calhoon went on to win the State Championship. In the Consolation Bracket, Tina met Teisha McCarthy from Washougal and was pinned in 2:54. The loss put Tina in the match for 5th place where she lost to #2 seed Lilia Gudzyuk of Auburn Riverside, giving Tina a 6th place finish. While some may see that as a disappointment, Tina greatly exceeded her goal, which was to just get TO the state tournament.
In a final note, Lauren Watts, former Oak Harbor resident, basketball player and NWMS student, also earned a 6th place finish at the state tournament
