The Middle School girls basketball season kicked off on Feb 18th with the first of two scheduled OHMS vs NWMS games. This first game was held at OHMS and the host team won both games.
In the 7th grade game the Panthers were all over the Cougars. OH led 9-2 at the end of the first and 13-4 at halftime. The Cougars woke up some in the 2nd half, doubling their point total in the 3rd and doubling it again in the 4th, but the Panthers were steady on offense and won 41-16. 4 players scored for NWMS - Meghan Gronbach 2, Gina Parrot 2, Hayley Lundstrom 2 and Natalie McVey 10. Seven Cougars got on the board let by Sierra Southwick with 10 points. Brook Peplinski scored 8, Kendal Wersland 7, Heather Anderson 6, Alyssa Eden and Alexia Mobley 4 each and Hanna Gluth 2.
The 8th grade game was much closer, but OHMS won handily. The Panthers took an early 12-4 lead and the Cougars just couldn't get past the OH press. The two teams played almost even in the 2nd period with OH adding one point to their lead, 19-12 at halftime. The 2nd half was similar to the first and OHMS won 35-23. The Panthers were led by Annie Leete with 21 points. Jamie Estrella and Zana Harrison hit for 4 points each while K.C. Winfield, Kyla Bernardo and Rebecca Schrum scored 2 points apiece. The Cougars were led by Lizzie Fry with 6 points. Chelsea Atkinson scored 5, Cassidy Gurich and Breanna Roderos 4 each, and Melanie Callaway and Caterina Amsler 2 each.
No photos or video from this first matchup as the OHSR was at NWMS covering the first of only two home wrestling meets.
We did cover the OHMS vs Cascade MS game on Feb 25th.
Things were looking good for the 7th grade team early. Brook Peplinski took the opening tip in for a score and the OH defense held Cascade scoreless for half of the first period. Cascade then went on a 8-0 run but Nalani Gabbert hit a shot just before the buzzer to make it 8-4 in favor of Cascade. Things fell apart in the 2nd period as the Panthers allowed 9 points and did not score any of their own, leaving Cascade with a commanding 17-4 lead at halftime. After the break, the Panther defense stepped up, holding Cascade to just 4 points, but the offense again had a hard time getting the ball through the net, scoring just 2 points all quarter. OH scored 3 and Cascade 6 in the final period as OHMS lost 27-9. Gabbert finished with 5 points and Peplinski 4 to account for all the Panther scoring.
57 photos from the 2nd half of the game, along with some team photos, are posted HERE.
The 8th grade game was the opposite, with a very aggressive Panther team running away to a 16-2 first quarter lead and never looking back. The blowout started with Annie Leete scoring on the opening tip and the Panthers led 7-0 before Cascade could score. It wasn't until 6:10 left in the half before Cascade scored again. OHMS scored in double figures in every quarter except the 2nd and only let Cascade get 14 points for the game. The final was 42-14 in favor of the Panthers. Leading the team again was Annie Leete with 20. Jamie Estrella had 6, Nina Coleman and Zana Harrison 4 each, and Maddie Ching, Makenzi Schulle and Olivia Hunt scored 2 each.
59 8th grade photos are posted HERE.
