Middle School Girls Basketball 2011-02-22 NWMS @ OHMS

The annual OHMS vs NWMS girls basketball game took place Tuesday afternoon at OHMS with OH winning both games.

In the 2nd, though, the Panthers took total control of the game, scoring 20 points to boost their lead to 28-6 at halftime and the Panthers cruised to a 45-19 win.

While Jinai Ekberg scored the majority of the Panther points with 19, seven other players got on the board. The 8th grade game was all Panthers - literally. Natalie McVey sank 2 free throws in the 4th period for the only NWMS points as the 8th grade Panthers swept the afternoon with a 41-2 win.

Middle School Girls Basketball 2011-02-16 - OHMS @ LaVenture

The Oak Harbor Middle School girls played their 2nd game in a row on the road, this time traveling to LaVenture Middle School in Mt. Vernon. On Tuesday, the girls were in Anacortes and struggled, losing both games.

In the 7th grade game things were even through the 1st quarter. Taylor Heidt scored the first OH basket with 5:45 left in the 1st and the quarter ended with OH on top 6-4. In the 2nd quarter, the Panthers were warmed up and it showed on the floor. The girls went on a 20-2 run behind 8 points by Jinai Eckberg to build a 26-6 halftime lead and held on to win big. According to the scorebook, Eckberg finished with 17 points, many of them off steals and layins. Dejanelle Bunch and Taylor Heidt both had 8 pints, Janae Payne 4 and Suzanne Kaltenbach 2.

The 8th grade game wasn't quite so lopsided. While the Panthers scored early and often, leading 9-2 at the end of the 1st quarter and 21-10 at the half, they let LaVenture get back into the game in the 2nd half. Oak Harbor was able to hold on for a 43-35 victory, but it was closer than the score indicated, as LaVenture made only 1 of their 13 free throw attempts. Nalani Gabbert scored 12 to lead the team and Hayley Lundstrom was also in double figures with 10. Brook Peplinski scored 9, McKinley Kellogg 6 and Michelle Braegger, Faith Callies and Rebecca Pabona scored 2 each.

BBB 2010-02-16 at Mountlake Terrace

Oak Harbor's extended boys basketball season came to an end Wednesday at Mountlake Terrace when the Wildcats came up just 2 points short of a chance to go to the state tournament.

The 'Cats were sluggish on offense in the 1st period, scoring only 5 points, then the defense allowed 14 points by the Hawks in the 2nd period as MLT led 24-15 at halftime. The two teams were essentially even in the 3rd, but in the final period, Oak Harbor made a move. Our boys closed the gap to just two points with just over a minute remaining, 38-36, but Terrace bumped the gap back to 4 points with 27 seconds left. Then the Wildcats were able to score with just over a second on the clock, the refs whistle blew and shortly after the horn sounded. Reviewing the video, there should have been about 1.3 seconds on the clock with MLT inbounding the ball under the OH basket, but the refs waved their arms and said 'game over' and left the court, giving a 40-38 win to Terrace.

Mike Washington led the 'Cats in scoring with 15 points and Kevawn Brooks scored 2. Denzel Massey scored 5, Jay Stout 7 and Stevie Bratt 5 in their final game in a Wildcat uniform.

Also playing their final game: David Tillotson, Connor and Trace Paul.

Middle School Girls Basketball 2011-02-15 - NW vs Mt Baker

The Middle School girls basketball season kicked off yesterday with OHMS facing Anacortes on the road and NWMS hosting Mt. Baker.

In the Cougar gym, things didn't look too bad for the 7th grade girls. At first. Mt. Baker built an early 5-0 lead and the Cougars didn't score until Hannah Knoll scored to make it 2-5 with 4:10 left in the first. Then, Rieley Auger nailed a 3-pointer with 10 seconds left in the 1st to make it 5-7. Then in the 2nd period, Knoll scored again to tie the game at 7 each then Laura Anderson tied it again at 9 with 4:35 left in the 1st half. Unfortunately, that was the last score NWMS would get in the half as they went into the locker room down 15-9. Things got worse in the 2nd half as the Cougar girls could not contain the Grizzly offense and lost 29-19. Knoll finished with 10 points, Auger with 3, while Anderson, Mariel Empinado and Monique Masuko had 2 each.

The 8th grade was a blowout. With just a few returning players, the Cougars found themselves in a 22-0 1st quarter deficit. The Cougars finally got on the board when Aubrey Lock scored with 4:55 left in the 2nd. Mt. Baker went on to win the game 56-7. Lock scored 4 in the game, Ashleigh Cook 2 and Meghan Gronbach 1.

A few video highlights are HERE.

At the girls tournament, Oak Harbor had two entrants, both in the same weight class. Both Jen Fremd and Bailey Martinez won their opening matches, then faced each other. Bailey got on the board first with a takedown, but Jen showed her experience, reversed Bailey and recorded a pin in 1:27.

In the winner's bracket, Jen Fremd faced the #1 ranked wrestler in the state and was pinned in 1:25. She finished 2nd and is going to State.

Now in the consolation bracket, Bailey sucked it up and won a very close 6-5 match in overtime then got a pin in 4:07 to finish in 3rd place, earning a trip to the Mat Classic.

BBB 2011-02-12 @ Sedro Woolley - playoffs

Having lost their first game of the double-elimination WESCO 3a Tournament, the Wildcats were facing elimination when they visited Sedro Woolley High School.

OH started out on top, but the Cubs came back to lead 16-13 at the first horn. Behind 9 points by Jay Stout in the 2nd and another 12 in the 3rd, the Wildcats came back to lead 29-26 at halftime and 48-35 at the end of the 3rd. Stout was quiet in the final period, but Denzel Massey drained 8 points as Oak Harbor kept their playoff run alive with a 59-45 win.

Massey finished on top for the Wildcats with 23 points and Stout was close behind with 22. Mike Washington, Jr. had 9 and Stevie Bratt 5.

BBB vs Glacier Peak

On Feb 3rd, the Wildcat boys basketball team traveled to Glacier Peak for the final regular season game, and the results weren't pretty.

The freshman team lost 71-34, with Diamonte Ridley scoring 11, Rys Mattila and Gabe Groenig 6 each, Casiano Atienza and Isaiah Rennes 4 each and Alex Krantz 2.

JV also lost, 64-39. Patrick Bell and Cameron Faulkner both scored 11 points. 3 each were scored by Paul Johannsen, Corey Houck and Zach Gibbs, 2 each by Dayne Herron and Michael LaBelle, and 1 each by Forrest Brown, Devontay Sutalo, Chris Hailer and Kiefer Hermann.

The varsity final was 73-53 in favor of Glacier Peak, but with just a few minutes left in the game, Coach Washington called a timeout. The purpose of the timeout was not to plan a grand scheme to win the game, but to let the team know that Shorecrest had beat Everett and the Wildcats were going to the playoffs for the first time in 13 years. Mike Washington, Jr. scored 22 points in the loss and Jay Stout added 17. Stevie Bratt finished with 10, Corey Houck 3 and Denzel Massey 1.

Video highlights from the games, including freshman team highlights, are posted HERE.

43 photos are posted HERE.

Seven days later, the Wildcats were back at Glacier Peak, again playing the Grizzlies, but this time in the first game of a double elimination tournament. This game did not go well at all. Glacier Peak jumped to an early 13-2 lead, but the Wildcats scored 8 points in a minute and a half and the 1st period ended with GP leading 16-10. Unfortunately, it's a close as the Wildcats would get as the Grizzlies scored 30 points just off of 3-points shots. The final was 64-37.

The loss sets up a loser-out game against the Sedro Woolley Cubs Saturday night, Feb 12th at Sedro Woolley HS.

Just 22 photos from the game are posted HERE.

Video clips are posted HERE.

At 145 lbs, freshman Devin Jensen went 2-and-out, but Junior Brandon Stratton pinned his way to a championship. Only the final match went past the 1st period. Stratton was down 4-1 yet found a way to get his opponent on his back and recorded a pin in 3:11.

Josh Crebbin recorded two pins and an 8-0 win on his way to the championship bout, which was close, but time expired with Josh 2 points short and he finished the tournament in 2nd. Teammate Justin Everett finished in 7th.

The 160 lb bracket had some exciting matches. Senior Steven Souza finished in 7th place and won't advance to regionals, but he won his final match as a Wildcat by pinning his opponent in 4:07. Junior (and new wrestler) Josh Orritt came very close to finding a place on the podium. In an elimination match he came from behind and scored some late points to force overtime, but his opponent scored first on OT to end the match.

Collin Higingbotham finished in 5th at 171 lbs with a close 8-6 victory and gets at trip to regionals but freshman Kenny King was eliminated early.

BBB 2011-02-01 vs Shorecrest

Looking to avenge a 1-point overtime loss, the Wildcat varsity team hosted the Shorecrest Scots in the final home game of the season.

Behind 7 points from Denzel Massey, Oak Harbor grabbed an early 17-12 lead, increasing it to 30-24 at halftime. Mike Washington scored 7 of his 22 points in the 4th quarter as OH won going away, 63-52. It wasn't all easy, as Shorecrest closed the game to within a couple of points, but Oak Harbor held off the charge. In addition to Washington's 22 points, Jay Stout scored 14 and Massey 12. Trace Paul scored once in each period for his 8, Stevie Bratt hit for 5 and Patrick Bell, in his first varsity game, scored the final two points of the game, right at the buzzer.

The JV game was a disaster. Up 60-25 in the 3rd period, Shorecrest continued to press and shoot 3-pointers. Not a very classy performance by the Scots. Patrick Bell scored 6 to lead the team and Drew Washington added 5. Forrest Brown scored 4 as did Jackson Knoll. Jackson got is points in back-to-back buckets after he snagged a loose ball. The entire play is on the video clip. Cameron Faulkner, Chris Hailer, Kiefer Hermann and Corey Houck each scored 2 points.

In the Freshman game, the Scots got ahead early, leading 15-6 in the first, increasing the lead to 20, and held that lead to the end, winning 58-38. Isaiah Rennes scored 14 to lead the team. Diamonte "Cortez" Ridley and Alex Krantz each scored 9 while Casiano Atienza, Gabe Groenig and Matt Zafra scored 2 each.

These games were the final home games of the 2010-2011 season. The boys travel to Glacier Peak on Thursday. If OH wins, they get a playoff spot. If they lose, they need help from Shorecrest - if the Scots beat Everett, OH is in. If Everett wins and OH loses, the season is over.

GBB 2011-01-31 @ Shorecrest

The Oak Harbor girls basketball teams traveled to Shorecrest Monday for their final road game of the year. They all played some decent defense, but unfortunately, forgot to bring their offense along with them.

In the aux gym, the Freshman team scored 8 in the first quarter but only 14 for the rest of the game on the way to a 36-22 loss. KC Winfield scored 6 to lead the team. Jamie Estrella, Liz Lym and Ali Gordy had 4 each and Sam Hawkins and Cassidy Gurich scored 2 each.

The JV game was not fun to watch. The OH girls were down 24-8 at the half and scored only 2 points in the 4th period as they lost 41-15. What was hard about watching that game is that they can and have played better, against stronger teams. On the plus side, exchange student Shoko Yamaguchi scored twice. She and Lia Pantoleon both finished with 4 points, Morgan Young and 3 and Erika Flores and Marissa Lewis each had 2.

The varsity had problems on offense in the 1st 3 periods, scoring 18 points, but got things together a little in the 4th, adding 14 more, but the hole was too deep and they lost 47-32. Emilie Renninger was on top of the Wildcat scoreboard with 8 points. Yoshi had 6, Ciera Wiser and Annie Leete 5 each, with Jalani Bobo, Clarissa Abadesco, Tatiana Cumming and DJ scoring 2 each.

The girls finish their season with senior night on Wednesday, Feb 2nd in the OHHS gym. Come help say goodbye to Yoshi, Clarissa and Addy in their final game as an Oak Harbor Wildcat.
