Cross Country

The boys and girls cross country teams returned Thursday from their first-ever team camp. The loaded up into vans early Tuesday morning and drove up into the Cascades.

They did a lot of running, logging around 20 miles during the 3-day conditioning and bonding camp.

I heard there were just a few pranks played by both the boys and girls on each other, but all in good spirit with no hurt feelings. Sorry, no photos. :(

Football injuries??

Rumor has it that there were some notable injuries at Wenatchee, including a 'shattered' ankle and a possible broken wrist.

If anyone has some concrete details, please write and let me know so we can get the facts straight.

GBB - Final day of youth camp

It was a busy day in the OHHS fieldhouse as the girls at the youth camp went head-to head with the high school team in some scrimmaging.

Coach McLeod and Burleson were pleased with the enthusiasm and hard work that the campers showed, but were mildly disappointed in the number of campers. Previous years have seen up to 50 campers, but there were less than 20 this year.

With the camp ends the summer sports season for the high school. Starting Aug 1st, the coaches can't have any interaction with potential players until their season starts.

GBB Youth Camp

I was up at the high school today for the first day of the Girl's Basketball summer youth camp. I didn't get an exact count, but there were around 40 campers and about 15 high school players along with Coach McLeod and Burleson.

I was there for about an hour, and the girls were involved mostly in dribbling and ball handling drills. They had to maneuver around some chairs that were set up, and at each chair had to switch dribbling hands using various skills, such as crossover or between the legs.

I posted 69 photos from this first day and will take some more on the final day of camp.

GBB Sammamish Tournament 7-26 & 27

The Oak Harbor High School Girls Varsity Basketball team made a trip down to Sammamish High School the weekend of Jul 26-27 for the “Buzzer Beater” tournament.

Things didn’t go so well the first day, with our girls going 0-2 in pool play. The first game was against Gig Harbor, and this game was all Jessica Denmon. Of the 34 OH points, Denmon accounted for 23. The only other scorers were Cheyenne Tubo and Becca Moeai with 4 each and Kathryn Fisken with a pair of free throws. Although our Cats lost, it was actually a very close game, and came down to the last shot, with the final 37-34 in Gig Harbor’s favor.

The second game on Saturday was vs. White River. Scoring was spread out a lot more in this game, with all but 2 girls getting on the board. OH sprinted out to a 21-14 halftime lead, but White River came out after the halftime break with a very aggressive defense, while at the same time they started hitting their shots. The last part of the 2nd half was back and forth, with White River coming out on top 46-44. Leading scorers were Cori Henricksen and Denmon, each with 10. Others in the scoring column were Tubo – 4, Tiffany Earnhart – 8, Clarissa Abadesco – 2, Jen Jansen – 2, and Fisken – 6.

Sunday was a different day. Coach McLeod, who was not at Saturday’s games (he was at a picnic spraining his ankle playing softball), resumed his coaching duties. The first game was against Blanchet HS in Seattle, and the game was all Oak Harbor. Our girls ran up a 20-point lead by halftime (37-17) and held it for the remainder of the game, with a final score of 51-29. The Cats had two players in double digits, Denmon with 20 and Jansen with 13. Tubo had 2, Henricksen 8, Fisken 2, and Moeai 6. It was a fun game to watch, and I think was a good indicator of how good our girls can be when they want it.

Oak Harbor also won the 2nd pool play game of the day, but it was much closer, and closer than the score indicated. Again, Denmon and Jansen were both in double figures, 16 and 10, respectively. Tubo had 3, Earnhart 9, and Henricksen 4 to round out the Wildcat scoring. The final was 42-33 for the Cats, but in this game it seemed like our girls weren’t fully into playing.

After pool play, the ‘Cats were 2-2. Normally only the top 2 from each pool went on to a single-elimination playoff, but Gig Harbor was down to just 5 players, and dropped out of the tournament, allowing our girls to play at least one more game.

This game was against Newport HS, and was a low scoring affair, and fairly close throughout most of the game. The girls were down by 2 at the half, 13-15, and kept it close up until the last few minutes, when Newport pulled ahead, building a 10-point lead that they would keep until the end of the game. The final was 35-25 for Newport, with Denmon dropping in 15 of the Oak Harbor points. 4 other girls scored, but only 1 had 4 (Jansen), with the rest scoring only 2 each (Tubo, Earnhart and Moeai).

The tournament marked the end of summer basketball for the high school, which is ending with a 4-day youth skills camp at the high school.

Volleyball camp update

I went back to the high school today (Wednesday) and took over 100 more photos, including some group photos of the campers and counselors.

Coach Molitor would like, again, to thank the WWU volleyball staff and players - there was an assistant coach and 4 players that spent all day every day for 3 days with our girls.

"our" girls consisted of over 40 campers, ranging from incoming 8th graders to incoming seniors. Oak Harbor had the largest presence, Coupeville brought most of their team, and even Anacortes High School was represented - with a single camper.

I spend several hours in the gym and the girls all looked like they were having fun, and in speaking with the counselors, they had fun as well.

Official volleyball tryouts and the beginning of the practice season is August 25th. At OHHS, Coach Molitor will be having 2-a-days for the first week at least, with the first practice from 11am-2pm and second from 3:30-6:30pm.

Volleyball Camp

I just posted a few photos I took Tuesday at the Volleyball Camp held at Oak Harbor High School.

The camp is being run by coaches and players from Western Washington University, and I saw girls from both Oak Harbor and Coupeville attending the camp.

I'll be going back on the 23rd to get some more pics.

Oak Harbor Youth Football

I was at the OHYFL agility and cheer camp this past Saturday, July 19th, and it looked like a good turnout.

On the football side, there were over 100 boys from 5 to 14 divided into age brackets. There wasn't any hitting, but lots of running and skill work.

There are now enough older boys to form a second, and perhaps a third junior team, but there's one problem: Not enough coaches. If you, or anyone you know, knows a little about football and a lot about leadership, please contact the OHYFL staff and offer your services. You won't regret it!

On the lower field, 7 girls from the OHHS Cheer team were working with over 40 girls on the basic cheer moves. The girls were having a lot of fun, and a couple of the smaller girl even got a chance to get airborne!

Photos have been posted for both the cheerleaders and football players. As is my practice with youth sports, there are no names associated with any of the photos, so you'll have to go through them all to see if there is a photo of your child. Sorry.

I need your help

If you have a son or daughter, brother or sister playing youth sports, I need to know when and where, locally, games are being played so I can come out and get some photos and post a writeup on the game.

I can't be everywhere, but am more than willing to go to local youth events, IF I know when and where.

So, give me and hand and send an email to oakharborsportsreport@comcast.net and let me know where to go.

How about some football!!!

Now that the summer is in full swing, and the coaches have had a chance to see most of the players, there is a quarterback that appears to be emerging from the pack and pulling away.

From what I've heard from various sources, J. Jordan has simply been outplaying the competition for the quarterback spot on this fall's team, with Lamont following.

The team will head off for their camp in Wenatchee Jul 20-24. This will be the team's 8th year at the Wenatchee camp, so it seems to be very effective. While the camp is by invitation only, Coach Turner will be taking two full teams this year.

I'm thinking about going out for at least one day and getting some photos of our men in action at camp.

Boys basketball, for a change

The boys basketball team played a tournament in Gig Harbor last weekend, and this is what Coach Washington had to say about it:

This past Sunday saw the varsity boys playing in a tourney in Gig Harbor, without Jay Stout and Aaron Boesch. It was a pleasure though, having Rashaad Smith back. The first game saw us losing 40 to 30 to a much bigger and stronger Gig Harbor team. We did not play very well but we hung around until the end. The next game saw us matched up against Lincoln. The game was a defensive battle and Lincoln ended up winning 23 to 19. The last game of the day saw us being matched up against Curtis, a team that was in the state playoffs last year. Curtis started out very strong but we went to a 2-3 zone and contained their bigger, more athletic players. We were down by 4 with 2 minutes to play but they ended up winning 40 to 32. Overall I was please with the defensive play but would have liked to see more chemistry offensively. Rashaad defended, blocked shots and rebounded very well. The Varsity is 7 and 7 overall this summer. The varsity will conclude the summer on July 19th at a tourney at Evergreen State College.

GBB Summer team camp

From June 30th-July 3rd, the girls were at Eastern Oregon University in La Grande, Oregon for team camp. It was a strong year, and we were able to put together three full teams. The only player of note who was not at camp was Jennifer Jansen, who, at the last minute was invited to a high-profile volleyball camp in Reno. While her post play was missed, every girl I talked to hoped she had an outstanding volleyball camp. For those who don't know, Jen is an outstanding volleyball player - a real pleasure to watch!

Anyways, back to basketball. In general, the three teams were sorted into what will most likely be next years' varsity, jv, and freshman teams, except that there were quite a few incoming 8th graders this year. This is good as it gets the younger girls more team orientation and exposure to the high school level of play.

The teams in camp were split into 5 separate leagues, with seeding based on expected level of play. In general, big school varsity teams were league 1, with smaller school varsity and big school jv making up leagues 2 and 3, and so forth down the line. Teams could move up a league if the level of play deserved it.

A typical, general schedule had the girls doing individual position skill work in the morning, mixed with girls from other teams that played the same position. After lunch would be team league play, with an evening program of skits, motivational talks and team building exercises. The girls were busy from 7am mto 10pm. The final day of camp was a tournament to determine each leagues' champion.

Our varsity girls started out in league one and did well. There were undefeated in league play. They won the first tournament game 25-2, but lost the second game against Middleton, a team they beat more than once during the week. That loss in the 2nd game eliminated our girls from the tournament.

The JV girls lost their first game by 2 points, to a team they lost to early in camp by around 20 points. The JV girls started out in league 3, but were quickly promoted to league 2. Their overall record was somewhere around 8-5. Coach Burleson said he was quite pleased with his team, seeing some great improvments on the court and some great team bonding off the court.

The freshmen team started out in league 5, and by the end of camp were all the way up to league 3. It was a big promotion and the girls were up against some stiff competition, including several teams that were made up of mostly varsity players!

On the final night of camp there were two "all-star" games. The game was two teams with selections from leagues 2-5. Ariel Brothers was selected by the other coached to participate. Not only did she start the game, she scored the first points!

The second all-star game was league 1 players against female camp counselors, many of which are current or former college players. OH had to players, Jessica Denmon and Cheyenne Tubo, with Tubo starting at point guard. The game was close and went to 4 overtimes before the camp director finally declared the game a tie.

66 photos from camp are now posted.
