Special Coupeville Edition - Boys and Girls Basketball

Coupeville had a quad-header against La Conner Tuesday night in the CHS gym, with both boys and girls JV and Varsity in action.

While the varsity girls were playing in the main gym, the JV boys were in the aux gym and were having difficulties with their opponents. Down 28-11 at halftime the boys never really recovered as La Conner went on to win 55-15. Three Wolves got on the board. Gavin O'Keefe topped the team with 16 points, Josiah Campbell hit for 7 and Ben Etzell 3.

The girls varsity game was very exciting with numerous lead changes. Coupeville trailed at the first break, 8-10, but came back to take a 5-point lead at halftime, 23-18. The Wolves increased their lead to 7 points, 36-29 to start the final period, but La Conner was able to catch up and with just a few seconds remaining had cut the Coupeville lead to just 1 point. La Conner had the ball and threw up a desperation 3-point attempt as the buzzer sounded, but the shooter was fouled in the act of shooting and went to the line to attempt 3 shots with no time remaining. She made her first to tie the game then hit her 2nd to give La Conner a 48-47 win. Bessie Walstad led the team in scoring with 10 point, Katies Smith had 9, Cassidi Rosenkrance 8, Kendra O'Keefe and Mehgan Metlow 7 each, Taya Boonstra 4 and Jai' Lysa Hoskins 2.

For the late games, the girls JV took the court in the Aux gym and struggled a bit in the 1st half. The Wolves led 9-5 at the end of the first but scored only 7 points in the 2nd to give the Braves a 17-16 halftime lead. After the break, Coupeville stepped up on defense, holding La Conner to just 6 points while scoring 13 of their own, then added another 23 in the 4th period to win big, 52-39. Shelby Kulz led the team with 21 points, 13 of them from the line where she was 13-16 and 5-6 in the 4th period. Grace LaPoint and Breeanna Messner scored 8 each, Amanda Fabrizi 5 along with Rhiannon Ellsworth, Maddy Roberts 3 and Jamie Price 2. The game was quite the foul fest, with the teams shooting 33 free throws.... each.

Finally, the boys varsity team. It was a close, tough game in the first half, with Coupeville down by just 5 points at halftime, but in the 2nd half, with several Wolves in foul trouble, the Braves used their speed and outside shooting to overcome Coupeville's size to win 65-49. Big Hunter Hammer put up 16 points while Ben Hayes, Ian Smith and Tyler King each scored 10. Dalton Engle scored 3 to round out the Coupeville scoring.
