The boys golf team starts their season with a tournament at the Whidbey Golf & Country Club in Oak Harbor on Tuesday the 17th.
The team is headed by John Matzen, who has been coaching golf for nearly 30 years in Oak Harbor. He’s a former OHHS health and PE teacher originally from Tacoma. He played golf through high school and college (Central Washington University), and some amateur play as well. He started coaching as he loves the game and wanted to pass that feeling on to younger players
Last year the team saw a lot of success on the course, with the team finishing 2nd in districts and Phil Reedy and Eric McCardle both going to state. Phil returns to this year’s team, and is looking forward to his 4th-straight trip to the state tournament. Also expected to play well are junior Brandon Kenworthy and sophomore Judd Ford. Coach Matzen expects all 3 to finish in the top 15 of WESCO and move on to postseason play.
