Youth boys basketball - 2-28-2009

With the youth basketball season coming to a close, the 5th through 8th grade Oak Harbor boys teams played two games each in the OHHS gym last Saturday. The first game was against Marysville, the second against Kings School near Seattle. The 5th and 6th grade teams play in the field house while the 7th and 8th graders play in the main gym.

The 5th grade team has struggled all year, winning games against only Mt. Vernon (27-25) and Everett (40-22). Saturday the boys played hard, but lost both games.

5th grade photos are posted HERE.

The most successful team this year has been the 6th grade team, winning 5 games, over Snohomish, Mt. Vernon, Arlington, Everett and Kamiak. On Saturday, however, things just weren’t clicking, as the boys lost first to Marysville 55-41 (33 points coming from big #15), and the second to Kings 67-48

The 7th graders have won only one game, a 32-29 victory over Everett, and had two very close games on Saturday. The first, against Marysville, was a low scoring game. It didn’t look good in the first, as the Wildcats found themselves in a 10-4 hole, but fought back so at halftime they were only down by 2, 15-13. After the break, the game stayed close, but in the end Marysville was able to hold on for a 39-34 win. Leading the Oak Harbor scoring was Zach with 16, then Gabe with 7, Anthony with 5, Isaiah 4 and Caleb 2. The game against Kings was a nailbiter. The first half was even, with Kings up 14-12 at the first horn and the game tied at halftime. In the 3rd, Kings built up a 45-38 lead, but the Wildcats were able to nip away until with just under a minute left the score was 56-53 in favor of Kings. Oak Harbor got the ball, then with 30 seconds on the clock, Drew Washington hit a 3-pointer to tie the game. The ‘Cats got the ball back and scored again with 5 seconds left to lead 58-56. Kings called a timeout, and during a scramble around midcourt, the Kings player attempted a shot and was fouled with just 2.4 seconds on the clock. The player went to the line to shoot 3 free throws, and made to tie the game again at 58. OH was unable to score a last-second basket so the game went to overtime. Kings took full control during the OT period, going on a 15-6 run to win the game 73-64. Zach finished the game with 22, Gave with 14, and Drew with 13 (11 of them in the 4th period and OT). Anthony scored 9, and Isaiah and Charles had 1 each.

The first 8th grade game was, and there’s no other word for it, ugly. Marysville was up 19-5 at the end of the first on their way to a 79-32 win. Devon scored 15 of the Wildcat’s points. Dante added 9, Riley 3, Noel 2 and Jonah 1. The points don’t add up, as one team score was not credited to any of the players.

The 2nd game was much closer, although with the same result. Out of 37 1st-half points, Devon scored 21, then added another 11 in the 2nd half for a total of 32. Noel scored 10, London added 5 points, going a perfect 5-5 from the free throw line, Dante had 4 points and Mike 2 points in a 60-53 loss.
