Girls Basketball @ Marysville - Feb 12, 2009

For their final regular season game of the year, and with a playoff spot guaranteed for the varsity team, the girls basketball squad traveled to Marysville-Pilchuck HS. With a win, the varsity team would get at least the #3 seed, and coupled with an Arlington loss would make OH the #2 seed and give the 'Cats a home playoff game. A loss would put OH at #4 and have them travel to the WESCO South #1 for their first playoff game.

According to Coach Showalter, the freshman girls played one of their best games of the year, but could not overcome the Tomahawks' strength, falling 40-31. Rayan Russell had quite the game, hitting for 12 points. Kristen Winston, in her final game as a Wildcat (she's moving) scored 6, DJ 5, Lia 4, and Erika and Kaileen 2 each. The girls need to work on their free throws for next year, as the team again did poorly from the line - 4-for-16 in this game.

JV got off to a good start, leading 7-2 at the end of the 1st, but MP went on an 11-4 streak in the 2nd to lead 13-11 at halftime. It didn't get better after halftime and the JV team lost their final game 35-27. Mariah Ferguson scored 10 for the team, Shantae 6, Molly 5, and Yoshi and Addy 3 each.

The varsity game was a nailbiter. OH fell behind early, 11-5, and even with 14 2nd-period points still trailed at halftime 22-19. MP maintained their lead, and with just a minute left in the 3rd had increased it to 30-25. In that final minute, OH scored over half of their 3rd-period points, and grabbed a 32-30 lead heading into the 4th. It was tight, and OH had several chances to score at the end, but MP held the girls off and earned the #3 seed with a 42-40 win. Jessica Denmon scored 14 and Jansen hit for 10, Cori had a good night with 7, Clarissa Abadesco 3, and Tubo, Fisken and Mowbray each finished with 2 points.

The girls go on to play at Henry M. Jackson HS in Mill Creek next Wednesday, Feb 18th, as they start the double-elimination WESCO tournament.
