Girls basketball playoffs vs Kamiak @ Marysville 2-21-2009

In their 2nd game of the District tournament, there was a large contingent of Oak Harbor fans, both adult and student. It was a good turnout, but the girls basketball team ran up against a wall in the Kamiak Knights from Mukilteo.

The 1st period was low scoring, with each team hitting for only 8 points, but in the 2nd, Kamiak came out with a strong press, and the OH team had no counter for it. The Wildcats scored only 2 points against 15 for Kamiak, but had a hard time even getting shot off due to an excessive number of turnovers, and OH found themselves down big at halftime, 23-10. Kamiak was able to increase their lead to 15 points by the end of the 3rd. In the 4th the girls were finally able to find the basket on a consistent basis, but it was too little too late, as Kamiak went on to win 43-34 in Oak Harbor’s 3rd-worst offensive performance of the year.

They aren’t out of it yet, as they play Edmonds-Woodway Wednesday evening, and WHEN they win that, will play the winner of Wednesday’s Jackson-Marysville game for third place and the remaining spot in the state tournament.
Denmon scored 15 points, 9 of them in the 4th period, Jansen hit for 9, Mowbray 6, while Henricksen and Abadesco each scored 2.

On a scary note, the game was delayed for over 10 minutes when Junior Nicole Mowbray went down after an elbow to her face. Paramedics arrived and tended to her, and early reports indicate a dislocated or broken jaw. Everyone hopes Nikki is not seriously injured and will be back at practice on Monday.
