MS GBB 2013-03-07 OHMS @ NWMS

Oak Harbor Middle School and North Whidbey Middle School met again, this time at NWMS.

In the first matchup, the OHMS 7th grade team won 20-17, but on Thursday NWMS got their revenge.

The game started out slow, with NW leading 6-4 at the first buzzer, but points from Briana Garcia and Roselia Loera made it 15-10 at halftime.  In the 3rd, the Cougars turned up the defensive heat, shutting out the Panthers and grabbing a 24-10 lead going into the final period.  In the 4th, OH got some offense going, but the Cougar lead was too much as NWMS won the rematch 28-17.  Scoring for the Cougars were Garcia with 15, Loera with 6, Nina Fox 4, Paige Jackson 3 and Alyssa McCauley 2.  For the Panthers it was Cherrish Asinsin leading the team with 7, Grace Westcott and Samantha Hines with 4 each, and Trinity Olivera with 2.

The first 8th grade game was won by NWMS, 43-14, and this time the Panthers resolved to do better - and they did!

Looking like a repeat of the first game early, NW led at the end of the first quarter 13-6, but the two teams played even in the second, with NW leading 19-12 at halftime.  The OH defense was still keeping the explosive NWMS offense in check, allowing 9 points in the 3rd, but the Panthers could score only 6 of their own.  Even though down by 10, the Panthers refused to quit and stepped up their defense even more, and in the final period the Cougars could score only 4 points.  Unfortunately, the Panthers scored only 6 of their own, and NWMS swept the 2012-2013 series by winning game two 32-24.

Scoring for the Panthers: Lydia Peplinski 10, Julie Jansen 8, Taylor Edwards 5 and Ally Henry 1.
For the Cougars it was Bryn Langrock 15, Elisabeth Adams and Michaela Pasch 4 each, Rahsanna Graham 3 and Hollie Dunn, Jaden Jesus and Lupe Loera 2 each.

Both teams have a couple more games to play before ending the season with a combined awards banquet late next week.
