Softball 3-26 Snohomish

Snohomish was at the softball fields at Hillcrest Elementary on Thursday and came away double winners.

The JV game ended early via the 10-run rule, but there were some highlights for the OH girls. Emily Hunt pitched 5 strong innings, recording 5 strikeouts and giving up only 2 earned runs. Alyssa Siwa went 1-2 and Angie Akins had her 2nd double in as many games.

Coach Showalter said Snohomish has a solid JV squad, hitting the ball well, but what really hurt the JV effort were errors in the field, and he wants to get that solved soon.

Kayla Ratliff went the distance for the Wildcat varsity team, recording 5 strikeouts and only 1 walk. The first inning was scoreless, but Snohomish scored 3 runs in the 2nd and 3rd, then another 2 in the 6th to go up 5-1. Things started looking up for the 'Cats in the bottom of the 6th as Ratliff hit a solid double, then Nikki Mowbray smacked a double of her own to drive Ratliff in. However, that was it for the OH scoring, then Snohomish scored 4 in the top of the 7th to put the game away.

In addition to her RBI double, Mowbray hit a single and went 2-3 for the day, and Kaylee Meders also hit a double.

Coach Weikle was pleased that the girls never gave up. "Our hitters couldn't get around on the pitchers and we made errors in the field", and "that combination doesn't equal a win" she said. The team will be working on timing pitchers, building confidence at the plate, and "WANTING the ball to make outs in the field".

A total of 99 photos from the JV and Varsity games are posted HERE.

Track 3-25 vs Snohomish and Stanwood

On the day before the start of Spring Break, the OHHS Wildcat track team hosted Snohomish and Stanwood in a tri-meet.

In team standings, the OH boys tied with Stanwood for first place with 67.5 points. Snohomish was third with 43 points. On the girls side, Stanwood ran away with the meet, totaling 83 points to Oak Harbor’s 59 and Snohomish’s 42.

Out of a total of 16 events for the boys, Oak Harbor athletes won 6: Stephen Lewis in the 100 and 200 dash, Josh Duhrkopf in the 800 and 1600 meter run, Donovan Hunt in the long jump, and the 4x100 relay team of Hunt, Lewis, Jason Curles and Josh Higbee.

Oak Harbor didn’t just win the 100 and 200, but finished 1-2, with Hunt just a fraction of a second behind Lewis. OH also had 1-2 finishes in the 800 and 1600 as Cody Klauer was right behind Duhrkopf.

In other notable performances, Greg Goebel, in his first 400m race of the year, finished in 2nd place, but knocked almost a second off his best time of 2008. Freshman Matt Reith finished 2nd in the 2-mile race in a respectable time of 10:55.22.

The 4x400 relay team was made of a combination of sprinters and distance runners. Duhrkopf and Matt Bolte represented the distance runners while Goebel and Smith were there for the sprinters. The team ran well, finishing in 2nd place.

Field events also saw non-winning success as Lewis threw the discus for 122 feet 2 inches, over 4 feet further than last weeks’ mark, earning him 3rd place. Nathen Steele threw for a personal best 93-7 for 9th place. In javelin, Sean Welch was 4th with a new PR throw of 133-9 and Cody Church threw over 15 feet further than he did at South Whidbey.

For the girls, junior Shantae Young won the 100 and 200 as well as the long jump, and the 4x200 relay team of Bri Peterson, Katelyn Schneider, Christina Alexander and Janelle Yoshimoto finished first. Close on the heels of Young were freshmen Maura McKole and Christina Alexander who both dropped time from last week’s performances.

McKole ran the 400 for the first time this season, finishing in 4th place, and not far behind were Carolyn Vasquez who cut almost 4 seconds off her previous personal best, and Katelyn Schneider, just .19 seconds behind Vasquez.

Addy Royal was the top distance runner for Oak Harbor, turning in a 2:34 in the 800 and 5:42 in the 1600, finishing 2nd in both races.

Freshman Hannah Bressler ran in both hurdles races, finishing 2nd in the 100 and setting a PR of 18.61, and 3rd in the 300m with another personal best of 53.67 seconds.

In the field events, sophomore Amanda Alvarado was quite pleased with her throw of 32-7, 3 feet better than her best throw last week. Senior Becky Freeman was the top Wildcat in the Discus and Yoshimoto in the javelin. “Yoshi” also finished 2nd in the long jump. Maura McKole and Hope Thompson finished 2-3 in the high jump and Thompson was 2nd in the triple jump.

As always, full results are available HERE.

141 photos, including group pics of the distance runners and throwers, are posted HERE.

Boys Golf 03-26 Everett Invitational at Legion Memorial in Everett

Baseball 3-26 vs Snohomish - JV @ Varsity

The JV team played a doubleheader at OHHS, making up a rained out game at Snohomish earlier in the week.

The JV boys lost the first game, due mainly to an excess of errors, but came back to win the 2nd game.

33 images from the JV game are posted HERE.

The Snohomish Varsity team improved their season record to 5-0 at the Wildcat's expense, but it wasn't all bad news. The 'Cats jumped out to an early lead, with the score 7-2 starting the bottom of the 3rd. At that point, the Wildcat bats went silent while the Panther bats came alive. Snohomish scored 11 runs in 3 innings to take the game 11-7. Yale Rosen, Bennett Richter and Sam Wolfe all hit doubles for OH.

Girls Tennis 3-26 vs Stanwood - JV and Varsity

The JV girls were at Stanwood Thursday afternoon for a match against the Spartan. The following was reported by JV coach Garry Brown:

"Stanwood gave OH a little tanning behind the woodshed on a otherwise pleasant spring day at the Stanwood courts. Highlights were the play of 3rd and 4th singles players Kate Kapitonova, and Cassie Gianino. They both took their matches to 3rd set match tiebreakers, with Kate losing a tough match in the tiebreaker and Cassie puling one out in the end. Otherwise, it was a long afternoon for the Wildcats." Out of 12 matches played, only one was won by a Wildcat, when Cassie Gianino beat her opponent 6-3, 5-7, (10-8).

In varsity action at OHHS, it was a little closer, but the same overall result. Erin Neilon (6-2, 6-1) and Molly Deleon (60-, 6-2) were the sole OH winners.

82 photos of the varsity match are posted HERE.

Softball 3-24 at Cascade - updated

On a cold, wet, rainy day in Everett, the varsity softball team just couldn't get anything to work as Cascade drilled the girls for 8 runs in the first inning and 11 more in the 2nd before the game was called at the end of the 4th.

Coach Weikle said it was a hard loss for the girls, especially given their recent success. The Wildcats are looking forward to Thursday's game where they can get back on the winning path.

Coach Weikle wanted to make note of senior Kim Mowbray, who played error-free in right field, recording 3 put-outs.

On the JV side of the field, only 9 girls were available for the game, which like varsity, was played in awful conditions. In the top of the 7th with the Wildcats down 6-2, no outs and two on, the game was called due to the weather, giving Cascade the win.

Coach Showalter said that Emily Hunt "pitched very well for the conditions", and wanted to recognize Alyssa Siwa and Reilly Sandefur for their great play, including a hit each. Angie Akins was the slugger for the game with a double.

Girls tennis vs Arlington and Lake Stevens

There were a lot of changes to the last few tennis matches, with some being rained out and other cut short by rain.

The March 24th varsity match at Arlington was halted partway through due to rain, and won’t be complete until Arlington comes to Oak Harbor on April 24th.

The JV match at OHHS did go on, at it was all Arlington. Out of 14 matches played, OH was able to win only 3. In exhibition play, the team of Cassie Gianino and Cristin Lade won 8-0, Jennifer Fremd and Nicole Wright won 8-1, and Audrey Andoy and Asia Pruyne won 8-0.

Coach Brown said that “special mention goes to 2nd and 3rd singles who took their matches to a tiebreak before falling”. Audrey Andoy dropped the first set 0-6, but fought back to win the 2nd 7-5 before losing the 3rd set. Kate Kapitonova, an exchange student from Russia, struggled in the 1st set before winning 7-6 in a tiebreaker, but the effort wore her out and she dropped the 2nd two sets.

Photos (73 of them) of the JV match vs Arlington are posted HERE, along with some team photos.

Both JV and varsity were in action Wednesday the 25th with the JV hosting the Lake Stevens Vikings and the varsity on the road.

While they didn’t win the match, there were several individual successes in JV action. #2 singles Audrey Andoy won 6-3, 6-1 and #4 singles Cassie Gianino hammered her opponent in a 6-0, 6-0 shutout. In exhibition play, the doubles team of Cassie Gianino and McKenzie McCormack won 8-7 after 4 tiebreakers, and Jennifer Fremd teamed up with Nicole Wright to win 8-1.

Coach Brown said that although Lake Stevens won a majority of the matches, each set was hotly contested and “the match was in doubt for most of the day”.

The varsity team lost a close 4-3 match against the Vikings. Winners were #3 singles Erin Neilon who won 6-4, 7-6(4), and Molly Deleon (6-2, 6-0). The #3 doubles team of Abi Cone and Beverly Gianino won their match 6-4, 6-2.

Track - JV/All-Comers 3-24 at Lake Stevens

The first JV/All-Comers track meet of the year was held last Monday the 23rd at Lake Stevens High School. Not all school posted their results, so final placings are not known.

OHHS has a large number of freshmen on this years’ track team, so there were a lot of entries in most of the events.

In the 100 meter dash, Justin Everett was first for OHHS, with a time of 12 seconds flat. He improved from Thursday’s time at South Whidbey by nearly half a second. Others recording times under 13 seconds were Michael Mack (12.2), Dillon Peterson (12.3), and Josh Sayre (12.8).

Justin was also the top Wildcat in the 200 meters, running the race in 25 seconds flat, over a second faster than last Thursday’s performance. Dillon Peterson, Michael Mack, Josh Sayre and Daniel Klope were in the top 5 for OHHS.

There were only two OH entrants in the 400 meters dash – one of the hardest races. The 400 is an all-out sprint for one full lap around the track. Daniel Klope finished in 59.8 seconds and Douglas Kim in 63.6 seconds.

Lucas Salmons finished first among the Wildcats in the 800m run with a time of 2:29.5, over 5 seconds faster than his time at the SW Jamboree. Anthony Yockey, Chris Opdyke, Thomas Honeycutt and Michael McGinnis also ran for OHHS.

The same names were also listed for the 1600 meter run, with Chris Opdyke on top with a time of 5:30, followed by Yockey, Salmons, Honeycutt and McGinnis.

There were not as many Wildcats present in the men’s field events, with participants in only the shot put, long jump and triple jump.

Justin Everett tossed a 12-lb shot 29 feet and was the only Wildcat in that event.

Four ‘Cats were in the long jump, with Michael Mack on top, leaping 17 feet 10 inches, followed by Dillon Peterson with 16-8, Mike Kincy 16-6 and Justin Everett 15-6. Peterson jumped nearly 5 inches further than he did on Thursday

The top 3 long jumpers also entered the triple jump and finished in the same order, with Mack recording a distance of 35-6, Peterson 32-8 and Kincy also at 32-8.

On the ladies’ side, Sophomore Bri Peterson led the Wildcats in the 100 meter dash, finishing in 14.5 seconds and setting a new season best, cutting ¾ of a second of Thursday’s time. Katelyn Schneider and Aimee Kelly also finished in under 15 seconds and both improved on their Jamboree times.

In the 200 meter dash, Peterson and Schneider switched places. While Schneider crossed the line first, both girls recorded the same 31.5 second time. Jesy Groebli, Aimee Kelly, Nadija Beronnilla, Erin Buch, Mariah Koontz and Melinda Kelly also ran for OHHS.
Courtney Tuttle and Ariel McCarter were the only OHHS participants in the 800 and 1600 meter runs. This was the first time this year either girl had run the 800 in competition. Tuttle finished in 2:54 and McCarter in 3:03. Tuttle also finished in front of McCarter in the mile with a time of 6:29, but Ariel was only 3 seconds behind, and cut 9 seconds of her Jamboree time.

Freshman Hannah Bressler was the only OHHS entrant in the two hurdles races. She finished the 100m hurdle race in 18.6, cutting .2 seconds off her time, and she also ran the 300m hurdles in a time of 55 seconds.

In field events, there were OH entrants in just the high jump and long jump. Hope Thompson was the lone high jumper and she cleared 4’6”. On her first jump of the year she set a new personal best, beating her record last year of 4’4”.

6 Wildcats were in the long jump, with Hope Thompson on top with 13-9, two inches better than her Jamboree jump. Others jumping were Bri Peterson, Aimee Kelly, Katelyn Schneider, Jesy Groebli and Mariah Koontz.

The Middle School wrestling season ended last Saturday with a tournament at Burlington-Edison High School.

Full results are not available, but at least one area wrestler finished on a high note. Oak Harbor Middle School's Anthony Smith had a season record of 19-1, and by the end of the day he was on the shoulders of his teammates being carried around the gym as champion.

Great job, Anthony!

Softball still undefeated - updated

The girls softball team traveled to Squalicum HS in Bellingham Friday recording a 10-0 shutout. Kayla Ratliff and Whitney Osborn pitched for the Wildcats, recording the no-hit shutout. The two pitchers combined for 12 strikeouts. Osborn ended the game by snagging a line drive that was hit hard right at her.

On offense, Nikki Mowbray blasted a home run over the left-center fence, Kaylee Meders went 2-4 with a RBI and Emily Meagher was 2-3.

The varsity game ended after only 6 innings due to the 10-run rule.

On offense, Abby Rankin had 3 hits, one of them a triple, batted in 2 runs and stole 2 bases. Freshman Liz Hedderman, back from an injury, also had 3 hits along with 3 RBIs. Varsity Soccer wins again!

The varsity soccer team improved to 2-1 on the season after beating Everett 2-1 on Saturday afternoon.

Everett scored 1st very early, but with just under 30 minutes remaining in the 1st half, Kevin Flavin, assisted by Greg Wolfe, scored a goal, and then with 14 minutes left, Everett was called for illegal contact just outside the net and Kevin Flavin scored again on the penalty kick.

There was a scary moment just after the 2nd half started when Connar Zimmerman and an Everett player went head-to-head, opening bloody gashes. Both boys had to go to the hospital for stitches, but should be fine. Connar's mom reported the he needed 4 stitches to close his wound, and should be playing again soon.

With less than two minutes left, Everett drove on the OH goal and took a good shot, but a spectacular dive by goalkeeper Jack O'Neil prevented the Everett score and Oak Harbor held on for the 2-1 win.

The JV boys played hard, but scored only a single goal, falling to the Seagulls 5-1.

103 images from both the JV and Varsity matches, including Connar's bloody head, are posted HERE.

Middle School Girls Basketball - OH @ NW 3-18-09

The two Oak Harbor middle schools finished off their season playing each other at NWMS, their second meeting of the year on March 18th.

In their first meeting, the 7th grade girls played close throughout the game, with OHMS pulling off a 2-point win. Wednesday’s game started out with NWMS getting an early lead, building it to 13-6 during the 1st half thanks to post play by Kiesha Loftin. Not only was she strong in the paint, but let everyone in the gym know she could shoot from outside as well, knocking down a pair of 3-pointers. OHMS didn’t stay down for long, with good outside play by Annie Leete and inside play by Makenzi Schulle. In one play, Schulle scored 4 points in the space of about 10 seconds. She had just scored on a layup, then during the inbound pass, Makenzi stole the ball and put it in for another 2 points. Behind that great 2nd-period play, OHMS was able to tie the game at halftime, 20-20, and in the 2nd half pushed even harder, earning a 44-33 win.

Leete finished with 27 for the Panthers with Schulle adding 11. Jamie Estrella scored 4 and Kyla Bernardo 2.

On the Cougar side, Loftin tallied 23 points, followed by Chelsea Atkinson with 8. Cassidy Gurich hit for 2 to complete the NWMS scoring.

7th grade photos, including NWMS team photos, are posted HERE.

Before the 8th grade game, there was little doubt about which team was going to win. This year, NWMS happened to have the most experienced players, and totally dominated in the first meeting.

On Wednesday, OHMS scored first, with 6:09 left in the first, but only scored another 6 points the rest of the half while NWMS scored 22. The Cougars eased off in the 2nd half, but still won the game 38-23.

For the Cougars, Marissa Lewis led the scoring effort with 12, Emilie Renninger scored 9, Naomi Walker 8, Paula Gass 6, and Jalani Bobo 3.

The Panthers were led by Jeane Robles with 9. Kelsey Rankin and Karis Clark scored 6 each, and Joem Evangelista had 2 point.

8th grade photos, with several NWMS team photos, are posted HERE.

Boys Soccer 03-17 vs Arlington

39 photos from the games, including a JV team photo are posted HERE.

In doubles action the team of Clarissa Abadesco and Valerie Loders smoked Monroe in the first set 6-0 and won the second 6-4. The JV team also saw success, winning 6-1. JV #1 singles player Michelle Maxwell had the toughest match. She won the first set 6-2, then sprained her thumb in the 2nd set in addition to some painful foot blisters and lost the 2nd 3-6. Boys Golf 3-17 at WG&CC

The boys golf team started their season with the 4-team Purple Cup at the Whidbey Golf & Country Club. Unlike Monday's girls match, the weather was pleasant, with only a mild wind and a fair amount of sun.

At the end of the first 9 holes, senior Phil Reedy was tied for 2nd place with a 35, just one stroke behind the leader. Judd Ford was just two strokes behind Phil and Brandon Kenworthy carded 43. The Wildcat were in 3rd place, just 3 strokes ahead of 4th place Lake Stevens at the end of the first 9 holes, and 23 strokes behind leader Kamaik.

On the back nine, Judd Ford and Matt Fikse both did much better, with Judd scoring a 34 - the best of all 24 golfers, while Matt was 7 strokes better, carding a 41. In the end, Judd and Phil tied at a 1-under-par 71, and tied for the days' best score. Brandon Kenworthy scored an 84, Matt Fikse 89 and Luke Felkner 95. Logan White just couldn't get things going that day, scoring a 113.

As a team, Oak Harbor scored a 410 while first-place Kamiak scored 389, followed by Snohomish with 391.

The next boys golf match is a JV match at Stanwood on the 24th and a varsity match at Everett on the 26th. The next home match is April 9th at the Whidbey Golf & Country Club.

55 images from Tuesday are posted HERE. Included is a varsity team picture and several photos of Coach Matzen.

Boys and girls track 2009

Roving Reporter Michelle Sandstrom submitted the following track preview.

Jay Turner, boys head coach has been teaching here at Oak Harbor High for thirteen years, and this is his thirteenth year as the sprinting coach for Track & Field. He was born and raised in Marysville, Washington where he participated in football, basketball, and Track & Field, and in the fall went to college and continued playing football. Growing up he worked at his parent’s convenience store until receiving an OHHS teaching position.
This season will be his fourteenth season of coaching and has “high hopes” for this years “young team”. His all around goal is to “have a great time” and to “make it through”. He would love to have a year like last season where sixteen student athletes went to state. His promising returnees include Donavan Hunt, Stephen Lewis, and Alison Duvenez and an impact newcomer is Shante Young.
Getting to know Mr. Turner on a better level I found out he enjoys playing Wii and won’t eat any type of fast food. He is a Seahawks fan along with a love for art class. And of course as a track coach, prefers running any day over swimming.

Eric Peterson, the distance and girls head coach, is a Mt. Vernon raised Oak Harbor marketing and running coach. Growing up in Mt. Vernon, during his high school and college years he worked late nights at “Joe Mama’s diner” after Cross Country practice in the fall and Track & Field during the spring. He claims he doesn’t know how long he has been coaching but does it because he “loves alpacas” and has been at Oak Harbor High School for seven years.
Like Coach Turner said about the previous year, Mr. Peterson’s highlights were taking sixteen to state, especially at the time, freshmen Allison Duvenez, who is a promising key returnee along with Matt Bolte, Josh Durkoph, and Abby Leete. His impact newcomer “would have to be Brandon Vagt”. His season goal is to have fun and coach a very supportive team.
Some facts you might not know about Coach Peterson is he prefers McDonalds over Burger King, Gatorade over any soda, he isn’t a big navy or army fan, would rather choose green over red or blue, and believes Roy is better then any dog or cat.

Kevin Allen coaches the throwers - shot put and javelin. He was born and raised in Sedro Woolley, and has been at OHHS for thirteen years and has coached for twelve. During high school he played football, participated in wrestling, ran track, and played golf. When entering college he switched to Lacrosse and worked for Cascade Pizza.
Coach Allen doesn’t have a season goal explaining “I don’t know, its track, and it’s too early to tell, I have only attended two practices”. He has a long list of key returnees including Stephen Lewis and Sean Welch for discus, and Doug Hughes and Donavan Hunt for javelin.
Small information you may not know about Mr. Allen is that, as with Mr. Peterson and Mr. Turner, he prefers the iPhone and enjoys Lost over House. He enjoys comedy, doesn’t drink Coke but prefers it over Pepsi, prefers the Air Force over Army or Navy and believes Fords out beat Honda, VW, and Dodge.
Mr. Allen is the husband of Mrs. Allen who is another high school Track & Field coach specializing in jumping, however she is expecting their first baby together and couldn’t make it for an interview.

Boys Golf preview

The boys golf team starts their season with a tournament at the Whidbey Golf & Country Club in Oak Harbor on Tuesday the 17th.

The team is headed by John Matzen, who has been coaching golf for nearly 30 years in Oak Harbor. He’s a former OHHS health and PE teacher originally from Tacoma. He played golf through high school and college (Central Washington University), and some amateur play as well. He started coaching as he loves the game and wanted to pass that feeling on to younger players

Last year the team saw a lot of success on the course, with the team finishing 2nd in districts and Phil Reedy and Eric McCardle both going to state. Phil returns to this year’s team, and is looking forward to his 4th-straight trip to the state tournament. Also expected to play well are junior Brandon Kenworthy and sophomore Judd Ford. Coach Matzen expects all 3 to finish in the top 15 of WESCO and move on to postseason play.

Boys soccer 2009

The boys soccer team is coached by Steve Barker, an English teacher at OHHS for 27 years. Originally from the Tacoma area, Coach Barker graduated from Bellarmine Prep and later the University of Washington. At that time, there was no interscholastic soccer competition, so Coach played when and where he could, totalling over 30 years of soccer experience. Coach Barker was also the coach of the girls soccer team at OHHS. As well as teaching at OHHS for all those years, he's also been involved with the OHHS soccer program. At various times he's been either the boys or girls head coach, head coach for both (as he is now), or an assistant. Coach Barker is truly in love with the game, and speaks of it with a passion. He likes to point out that soccer is a very fluid game, and is a sport not for really large or really fast people, but a game for athletic people.

The team last year did not see a lot of success on the field, but were always competitive and physically tough. The team had a good, solid defense, and this year Coach Barker wants to put more emphasis on the offense and score more goals. He’ll be helped on the field by team captains Kevin Flavin and David Moore, with additional leadership provided by the 6 other seniors on the team.Coach Barker is assisted by JV coach Brian Thompson, an OHHS PE teacher. Originally from Minnesota, where he attended both high school and college, Coach Thompson has been teaching for 20 years and has 17 years coaching experience, all in Oak Harbor. In high school, Coach Thompson didn’t play soccer as it wasn’t available, but he was a very good gymnast, earning several awards. As with most JV coaches, he won’t be concentrating so much on winning games, but providing instruction and guidance to the players, preparing them for varsity play. He’s looking forward to some great play and team leadership from James Miracle and Nick Jensen, both returning to the team, and his overall goal is to make sure that the boys have fun, while at the same time challenging them.

Some things you might not know about Coach Barker: He doesn’t play any video games and avoids all fast-food joints at all costs. He won’t do iPhone or Blackberry, preferring an old-school telephone instead. He can’t stand cats or dogs and had a fondness for root beer.

Things about Coach Thompson: Even after 17 years in Oak Harbor, he’s neither a Husky or Cougar fan, but a Gopher fan, he chose Army over Navy, as he did a stint in the Army as a parachute tester, he also just does old-school cell phones and doesn’t drink Coke or Pepsi, but plain old H2O. He did choose dogs over cats, blue over red, and likes to eat at El Cazador.

The soccer teams start their season at 5:30pm Tuesday the 17th in Wildcat Memorial Stadium with a league game against Arlington.

Girls Tennis preview

The OHHS girls tennis team kicks off the season Tuesday, March 17th at OHHS vs Monroe. The team will be lead, for the 10th year, by coach Horace Mells, Jr., assisted by JV coach Garry Brown.

This year’s team features several seniors, including #1 singles Jennifer Jansen, who will be attending Northwestern in Iowa on Volleyball and Tennis scholarships. In the #2 spot is junior Laurin Rico. Her brother, Tyler, will be a volunteer assistant this year.

Other key players this year are senior Mia Flores, in her 2nd year playing tennis; Bernie Rietz and Valeris Loders, both seniors playing their first year of tennis; and Katie Wiggins.

Coach Mells has not set any specific team goals yet, except that he expects the girls will finish the season playing better than they did at the beginning.

On a personal note, you won’t find Coach Mells in front of a TV very often, but does enjoy running and camping, and when he’s in the mood for Mexican food, he heads for Estebans.

Remember, it’s free to come watch the girls play tennis!

JV Baseball 3-06 vs Edmonds

The JV baseball team saw it's first action Monday, March 16th after last Saturday's jamboree was canceled.

The game featured a lot of hitting, especially to center and left field, and as late as the bottom of the 6th inning, Oak Harbor held a slim 8-7 lead. The final score is not currently available, but the photos are!

See the photos from the game HERE.

Softball 03-16 vs Burlington

The softball team saw their first action of the season in a game against Burlington-Edison on the Hillcrest fields. This was a varsity-only match as BE did not bring their JV team.

The first four innings were all about the pitchers. Senior Kayla Ratliff started for the Wildcats and pitched at least 4 scoreless innings. Burlington put a very good freshman on the rubber and she kept Oak Harbor scoreless.

Later in the game, Burlington was able to put a couple of runs on the board, but Oak Harbor put up three runs to lead 3-2. In the top of the final inning, catcher Nikki Mowbray had not just one, but two put-outs at the plate to preserve the Wildcat win while sister Kim went 3-3 with a double and RBI.

30 images from early in the game, including varsity team photos, are posted HERE.

Girls Golf 2009

The girls golf team is under the leadership of Andy Wesley, an Oak Harbor native and 1994 OHHS graduate. He earned his degree from Florida Atlantic University and has been teaching math and coaching at OHHS since 2000. He decided to start coaching golf for a couple of reason. One is that he loves to golf, and another is that he loves teaching, and not just math, but the life lessons that can be learned in golf.

The girls team had a lot of success last year as district and JV champions, and sending 3 girls on to the state tournament. All 3 state qualifiers from last year graduated, but Coach Wesley thinks the team has a very good chance of repeating as district champs this year.

This year’s team will be led by senior Shelbey Hamming, the team’s only senior. The rest of the young varsity team will be Melany Cone, Kara Stratton, Simone Hamilton, Ashley Johnson and Tiffany Earnhart. Only one freshman came out for the team, Kelsey Johnson, and she has been impressing the coach with her efforts.

The girl’s first tournament of the year was scheduled for March 12th in Sedro-Woolley, but was canceled due to too much snow in the course. The first action was the annual Gallery Shootout, held this year at the Whidbey Golf & Country Club on March 16th.

Oak Harbor finished 4th out of 8 teams, with the girls bunched close together in scoring. On a cold and windy day, Ashley shot a 103, with Melany and Tif just one shot behind at 104. Shelbey shot a 116 and Kara 118 for a total spread of just 15 strokes. The only team that was closer was Monroe with 10 strokes between #1 and #6.

As a team the girls tallied 545, just 3 stroke behind Monroe and 21 strokes ahead of Snohomish.

Next up for the golfing girls is a trip to Kamaik next Monday.

Over 100 photos have been posted HERE, including some of a couple of Redmond players, at parent request.

Baseball - Varsity vs Ballard - 3/13

The varsity baseball team faced the Ballard Beavers of Seattle for their first game of the year, and head coach Tyson Van Dam was pleased with what he saw.

The 'Cats got an early 3-0 lead on some smart baserunning, but Ballard was able to load the bases and scored 3 on a triple into left field. Even though OH closed the score late, Ballard was able to score and lead 11-9 going into the bottom of the 7th. Oak Harbor was able to get a couple runners on base, but could not score them.

Coach Van Dam was not disappointed in the loss, stating that as it was a non-league game, he kept starting pitcher Jay Stout and his relief in longer than he would have in a league game, and takes 3-4 Ballard runs on himself.

The next day the team was in Coupeville for a Jamboree, playing a series of 2-3 inning mini-games, and again did well, hitting at least two home runs.

Photos from Friday's game are posted HERE.

Middle School Girls Basketball - OHMS vs Cascade, 3-11

The Oak Harbor Middle School Panthers faced off against the Cascade Kodiaks of Sedro-Woolley last Wednesday and came away with a double win.

In the 7th grade game, it was all Annie Leete, as she scored all 9 of the team points as the girls jumped to a 9-4 first period lead. Annie added another 7 in the 2nd, increasing the lead to 20-11 at halftime. In the 2nd half, Jamie Estrella scored 5 points and Matty Ching added 4 as the Panthers cruised to a 42-28 win.

Annie led all scoring with 25 points; Jamie added 7 and Matty 4. Kyla Bernardo, KC Winfield and Makenzi Schulle scored 2 points each.

Full results of the 8th grade game are not available, but it was a close first half, with the Panthers holding a slim 16-14 lead. Cascade grabbed the lead 2 minutes into the 3rd period, but some great post play by Kelsey Rankin tied the game at 18, and another basket gave OHMS the lead halfway through the 3rd. Rankin 7 of 10 team points in the 3rd, and strong team defense put pressure on Cascade resulting in many turnovers. In the end, OHMS won 39-26.

In addition to the usual action photos, both team have a variety of team photos posted as well, both serious and not-so-serious.

Photos (46) from the 7th grade game are posted HERE.

8th grade pictures (52) are HERE.

Middle School Wrestling 03-05 vs Stanwood/Port Susan/Concrete/Darrington/Lakewood

Confusion was the word of the day at the beginning of last Thursday’s middle school wrestling match. The match was scheduled for a double dual with OHMS and NWMS up against Stanwood and Port Susan Middle Schools. However, for some reason, Lakewood, Concrete and Darrington also showed up. In the end, it was decided for Stanwood and Pt. Susan to combine into one team, and for Lakewood, Concrete and Darrington to form the 2nd team. OHMS went first against this team while NWMS faced the combined Stanwood teams, then switched opponents.

The first OHMS meet had only 11 matches, with Brody Dedobbalaere wrestling twice. The Panthers were able to win more than half the matches, most by pin. Dakota Sinchak was on the mat for the first time after an injury and did well, earning a tech fall.

Student-Staff Basketball 2-6-2009

It was a wild and crazy Friday night in the OHHS gym as the annual Student-Staff game, sponsored by the OHHS Key Club, was played with a couple of new twists.

There were two staff teams this year – both men’s and women’s, with matching student teams, and for the first time, underclassmen were playing. The two teams alternated each quarter, ending up with a full half of play. The game was hosted by Mariah Ferguson and Ver Starr. The staff brought along some cheerleaders of their own, namely Che Edoga, Rae Wood, Erica Riley and Linda Otruba. Referees were Gary Brundidge and Shane Evans.

The ladies went first, and after the first 10 minutes, the students were comfortably ahead 26-7. The guys came out in the 2nd and played hard and fast. The staff team scored 19 points but allowed 18, leaving the students in the lead 44-26 at halftime.

The ladies were again first in the 2nd half, and the staff could muster only two points after 10 minutes of play while letting the students take the lead to an insurmountable 61-28.

The staff team tried in the final period, but could only lessen the gap, not close it, and the students wound up winning the game 77-66.

Key for the men’s staff team was Scott Collins, with Mike Washington getting points as well. Jeremy Day and Dwight Lundstrom were effective from the paint. Rounding out the men’s team were Bill Weinsheimer, Jonathan Atkins, Justing Ronning, Jeremy Day, Dave Smith, Todd Showalter and Peter Esvelt.

The ladies’ team consisted of Amanda Reed and Kerri Molitor inside with Lori McKole, Pat Felger and April Billiter handling the ball. Filling out the roster were Jessica Wiekle, Summer Lefler, Maya Kilmer, Shannon McLeod and Windy Veach.

A total of 213 photos are posted HERE.

Softball preview

The girls softball team has a lot of new faces, from the head coach on down.

The new head coach is Jessica Weikle, and English teacher at OHHS. Although she had coached softball since 2002, this is her first year at OHHS and her first year as a head coach. Originally from Brookfield, Colorado, Coach Weikle came to Oak Harbor because her boyfriend is stationed here.

In Brookfield, Coach Weikle played softball for all four years of high school, then went on to play at the collegiate level, playing for 3 years at Colorado State University as catcher, and for a year at the University of Colorado.

Coach Weikle credits her dad for her love of softball. He was a NCAA umpire and as she relates it, “Dad gave me a ball”. He was a big influence in her life along with her high school coach to inspired her to stay involved even after her playing days were over.

There are five returning seniors, Kendra Wallace, Lauren Miller, Kim Mowbray, Kayla Ratliff, and Kaylee Meders. They will be joined by first-year senior Tanya Husler. Junior Emily Meagher will also be providing some on and off-field leadership. While it’s quite early in the season, Coach Weikle was been impressed with the play of freshmen Liz Hedderman and Brittany Johnson.

There are several goals that Coach Weikle has set for the team. First among them, and the motto for this year is “Believe to Achieve”. She expects the girls to reach that prime goal by being competitive and working together as a team.

On a personal level, Coach Weikle expects to learn and grow in her new role as head coach. She will be assisted in this by varsity assistant Lindsay Brockett, an English teacher at North Whidbey Middle School. Coach Brockett, originally from Stevensville, Montana, brings a love of the sport to the team. She will be valuable to the team as she brings some knowledge of many of the girls from her coaching experience in volleyball and basketball at NWMS.

Back for his 2nd year in Oak Harbor is JV coach Eric Showalter (no relation to OHHS teacher Todd Showalter). He’s originally from Celina, Ohio and is on active duty with the United States Navy. He’s played for over 15 years on various Navy slow-pitch softball teams, and for the last 3 years has been a member of the all-Navy softball team. Coach Showalter has been coaching longer than he cares to remember, and has been coaching softball for about 9 years. As JV coach, he doesn’t set much in the way of team goals, as he understands that his primary duty is not to win games (although that’s a goal), but to develop the JV players, getting them ready for their time on varsity. Last year Coach Showalter had 3 girls move up during the season from JV to Varsity. He will be assisted by Dustin Edsall, another active duty sailor.

Baseball preview

There are all new faces in the coaching ranks of the OHHS baseball team this year. Former coach Jim Waller retired after 3 decades of coaching, and after some tough interviews, former OHHS player Tyson Van Dam was selected to lead the team.

Coach Van Dam was raised in Oak Harbor and after graduating from OHHS played for 2 years at Edmonds Community College where the team won the Junior College Championships both years, then went on to the University of North Carolina at Pembroke where he played another 2 years.

When not on the diamond, Coach Van Dam works as a personal trainer at the new Thrive gym. When asked why he wanted to coach baseball, he said “Baseball is a major part of my life”, and he also wanted a chance to give back some of what he’s learned over the years.

Right now, there are only 3 returning seniors, Bennett Richter, Curtis Weaver and Jim Koepke. New to the team this year is senior Kyle Magana.

Coach Van Dam has only worked with his boys for a week, so hasn’t learned all their strengths and weaknesses, but he expects his young team to be competitive. He’s impressed so far with the speed of his defense, which will be a big plus.

Personally, Coach Van Dam expects to learn and grow with the team as the season progresses. He would like to encourage OH community members and OHHS students to come out and watch the team in action. There will be lots of home games, and best of all, they are FREE!

Coaching the JV team this year is Joel Schelling from Riverside, CA. He’s only been in Oak Harbor for a few months, but brings a wealth of baseball experience. In addition to his high school experience in California, where his team was the Sectional champs, he played for 3 years at Biola University, getting to the 3rd round of the NAIA College World Series. As JV coach, his main job is to prepare the players for the varsity team, and as part of that job, he will concentrate not so much on winning games, but ensuring that each player grows and develops not just as a player, but as a team member.

OHHS Counselor Jeremy Day is the new Freshman coach. He’s from Electric City, WA (near the Grand Coulee Dam) and played baseball at Lake Roosevelt HS before attending college at Whitworth in Spokane. It’s his first year coaching, and is excited to get back into baseball, especially to experience the smell and sounds on the field. He loves baseball because at the same time, it’s both a simple and complex. He sees his job on the Freshman team as similar to the JV coach – develop his players individually and as team members while minimizing errors. He expects to gain a deeper understanding of the teaching side of baseball, especially taking his thoughts and visions and turning them into performance on the field.

These 3 coaches will be helped by volunteer assistants Harlon Miles, Keith Snavely and Camden Schutte.

Middle School basketball - NWMS @ OHMS 3-2-09

This is the first full report from the girls season - please send an email if ANY name is misspelled so it can be corrected.

Oak Harbor and North Whidbey Middle School girls basketball teams faced off in the first of up to four meetings this year in the OHMS gym on Monday, March 2nd.

First up were the 7th grade girls. The two teams were evenly matched, with OHMS having better guards and NWMS having better inside players. NW played best in the first half, leading 9-6 at the end of the 1st, and 22-16 at the half. OHMS came back after halftime, scoring 10 points in the 3rd while holding NW to 5, cutting the Cougar lead to just 1 point. NW scored first in the final period to lead 29-26, then Annie Leete hit a 3-pointer to tie the game late, then hit another bucket to give OHMS a 31-29 win. Leete and Kiesha Loftin from NWMS shared scoring honors in the game with 17 points each.

OHMS – Leete 17, Rebecca Schrum 5, Makenzi Schulle 4, Nina Coleman 2 and Kristina (KC) Winfield 1. (Not all OHMS scorers are listed by request)

NWMS – Loftin 17, Cassidy Gurich 5, Samantha Saya 4, Rachel Colston 2 and Chelsea Atkinson 1.

The 8th grade game was nowhere near as close, as NWMS, with all but 1 of the AAU girls on the team, sprinted to a 15-1 first quarter lead and cruised to the win. OHMS made a run in the 3rd period, when Kelsey Rankin scored 8 of the team’s 16 points. Naomi Walker earned scoring honors with 23 points, many on lay-ins as NWMS won 62-27.

NWMS – Walker 23, Marissa Lewis 12, Emilie Renninger 10, Jalani Bobo 8, Paula Gass 6, Ciera Wiser 2, and Danielle Teasley 1.

OHMS – Jeane Robles 12, Rankin 8, Joem Evangelista 4, Desiree Hill 2 and Karis Clark 1.

The next scheduled meeting for the two teams in March 18th at NWMS. Admission is FREE.

Youth boys basketball - 2-28-2009

With the youth basketball season coming to a close, the 5th through 8th grade Oak Harbor boys teams played two games each in the OHHS gym last Saturday. The first game was against Marysville, the second against Kings School near Seattle. The 5th and 6th grade teams play in the field house while the 7th and 8th graders play in the main gym.

The 5th grade team has struggled all year, winning games against only Mt. Vernon (27-25) and Everett (40-22). Saturday the boys played hard, but lost both games.

5th grade photos are posted HERE.

The most successful team this year has been the 6th grade team, winning 5 games, over Snohomish, Mt. Vernon, Arlington, Everett and Kamiak. On Saturday, however, things just weren’t clicking, as the boys lost first to Marysville 55-41 (33 points coming from big #15), and the second to Kings 67-48

The 6th grade photos are HERE.

The 7th graders have won only one game, a 32-29 victory over Everett, and had two very close games on Saturday. The first, against Marysville, was a low scoring game. It didn’t look good in the first, as the Wildcats found themselves in a 10-4 hole, but fought back so at halftime they were only down by 2, 15-13. After the break, the game stayed close, but in the end Marysville was able to hold on for a 39-34 win. Leading the Oak Harbor scoring was Zach with 16, then Gabe with 7, Anthony with 5, Isaiah 4 and Caleb 2. The game against Kings was a nailbiter. The first half was even, with Kings up 14-12 at the first horn and the game tied at halftime. In the 3rd, Kings built up a 45-38 lead, but the Wildcats were able to nip away until with just under a minute left the score was 56-53 in favor of Kings. Oak Harbor got the ball, then with 30 seconds on the clock, Drew Washington hit a 3-pointer to tie the game. The ‘Cats got the ball back and scored again with 5 seconds left to lead 58-56. Kings called a timeout, and during a scramble around midcourt, the Kings player attempted a shot and was fouled with just 2.4 seconds on the clock. The player went to the line to shoot 3 free throws, and made to tie the game again at 58. OH was unable to score a last-second basket so the game went to overtime. Kings took full control during the OT period, going on a 15-6 run to win the game 73-64. Zach finished the game with 22, Gave with 14, and Drew with 13 (11 of them in the 4th period and OT). Anthony scored 9, and Isaiah and Charles had 1 each.

7th grade photos are HERE.

The first 8th grade game was, and there’s no other word for it, ugly. Marysville was up 19-5 at the end of the first on their way to a 79-32 win. Devon scored 15 of the Wildcat’s points. Dante added 9, Riley 3, Noel 2 and Jonah 1. The points don’t add up, as one team score was not credited to any of the players.

The 2nd game was much closer, although with the same result. Out of 37 1st-half points, Devon scored 21, then added another 11 in the 2nd half for a total of 32. Noel scored 10, London added 5 points, going a perfect 5-5 from the free throw line, Dante had 4 points and Mike 2 points in a 60-53 loss.

Photos from the 8th grade game are HERE.
