Powder Puff Football 11-20-2009

Friday night, Wildcat Memorial Stadium was the site of the annual Junior-Senior Powder Puff flag football game. It was windy and cold, but at least it wasn't raining.

It wasn't a high-scoring contest, but it was an exciting game. Most plays were running plays and a significant number of plays lost yardage. There wasn't a lot of passing due to inexperience at QB and also because of the wind.

Even though both teams started moving the ball late in the game, regulation time ended in a 0-0 tie. Just before regulation ended, the seniors had the ball on the 27 with a 4th down and 5 seconds on the clock. Coach Josh Higbee was about to put Erin Neilon in to kick a field goal, but a penalty on the seniors moved the ball out of her range.

Overtime was a Kansas City tiebreaker, with each team getting 4 plays to score from the 10 yard line.

The juniors went first, and after some hard running my Millie Goebel, the team came up just over a yard short of the goal line.

Then it was the seniors turn. They were also turned away on the first 2 plays, and on 3rd down from the 3, tried a mass surge, but the team was flagged for aiding the runner at the 1 yard line. The Junior team elected to accept the penalty, making it 3rd and goal from the 6 instead of 4th and goal from the 1.

Lauren Rico got the handoff, ran around the left end, squeezed through two players who were unable to grab her flag, jumped over another tackler and rolled into the end zone for the score.

Final - Seniors 6, Juniors 0 in overtime.
