Wrestling recap - through Jan 19th

As of Jan 13th, the Wildcats are ranked #17 in 3A for wrestling.

What's missing, is that on Jan 7th the Wildcats beat Shorewood 47-18.  In those same Jan 13th rankings, Shorewood was placed 15th.  On Jan 16th, the Wildcats beat #11 Pilchuck 33-30. I think there may be some changes when the next ranking comes out.

At the top of the 3A ranking is Sunnyside HS from the Yakima area.  Then, out of 10 teams in WESCO 3A, 6 of them were in the top 20 statewide.  The 1/13 rankings also include: Stanwood (10), Meadowdale (16), and Glacier Peak (19)

The Wildcats face Stanwood at Stanwood this coming Friday, January 24th.

There are only two home meets for Oak Harbor this year, the final two meets of the year.  On January 28th the Wildcats host Everett, then on January 30th Getchell, then move onto the post-season tournaments.

In those same rankings that have Oak Harbor as #17 as a team, 5 individuals are ranked.  At #11 statewide in 3A are Christian Bertram (113lbs), Jeremy Vester (132lbs) and Jackson Constant (285lbs)  Ranked #3 in the state are Jahleel Vester (138lbs) and Mark Johnston (152lbs).  In addition to these five men, expect to see many others in the post-season.

Below are results from the one meet I've been to this year - vs Mt. Vernon and Meadowdale at Mt. Vernon.

Some JV winners:  Meredith Bain pinned Devoni Davis (3:32), Amber Cramsey-Behnke pinned Olga Valdez-Sauceda (0:36), Caitlin Woodworth pinned Ruby Diaz (4:58), Meredith Bain pinned Leigh Lamay (5:12), Deasha O'Brien beat Nyla Lee, Trevor Vaugh pinned Jaiden Meritt (0:55), Corey Snodgrass pinned Gabe Walker (3:29), Nick Dugin beat Chris Rodriquez 18-15, Cooper Stone pinned Zach Cleave (3:11), John Long beat Ullyses Zavaleta 14-9, Snodgrass pinned Jerry Fernandez (4:37) and Josh McKenzie beat Katrina Cortazar 11-7.

In the varsity match vs Meadowdale, there were many Meadowdale forfeits, as a number of their top wrestlers were out of town for a large tournament, so it was an easy 58-12 Oak Harbor win.  Bertram beat Guzman 9-0, Jeremy Vester pinned Keith in 26 seconds, and Constant pinned Colegrove in 43 seconds.

The Mt. Vernon match was tough and close, but when Jackson Constant pinned Dario in just 7 seconds, it gave Oak Harbor a 37-31 win.

In addition, Bertram pinned Justin (0:55), Jeremy Vester beat Leger 7-1), Jahleel Vester beat Reyna 7-2, Eccleston pinned Lazaro (1:53), Dugin pinned Edwards (3:25).  To begin the match, Nickelson won by forfeit.
